REINVENTION with Mel Browne

Today I'm joined by a financial superstar and all round fashion-icon, Melissa Browne. Mel was a guest in my very first season and I wanted to bring her back to talk about our topic of the moment - reinvention. Mel is an award-winning, ex-accountant and ex-financial advisor who had her own successful business for almost 20 years. She has written 4 books about business and money including the global bestseller, Unf*ck Your Finances. So, she has the theory. But she also has the life experience. Mel has a fascinating and yet, unexpected story as she came back from being completely broke in her early thirties. After her divorce, she gave all of her money to charity (a move she instantly regretted), and then completely reinvented her life, again, where she is now a multi-millionaire. She gained her financial independence from the strategies she put in place for herself and now she teaches others how to do this too. Today, Mel is a financial educator who believes that understanding how to build wealth shouldn't be abdicated or just for the select few who can afford it – but is something that everyone can achieve.Mel is regularly asked to comment on money and finances making regular TV and radio appearances including Triple J's The Hack, the Today Show, Weekend Sunrise, Weekend Today, Sky Business and The Daily Edition. She has also been featured in or written articles for a variety of places including CEO Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Who, Vogue, Yahoo Finance and had a fortnightly column in the Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne's Age for 7  years.Mel is not only whip smart, but hilarious and super entertaining - so if you don't already follow her online, you must as you'll not only learn a bunch, you'll laugh out loud from her (& Lawsie, her work wife's) daily missives. She's a great mate of mine & I'm delighted to sit down with her and talk on this wonderful topic of ‘reinvention'....In this conversation, Mel Browne shares her journey of reinvention, discussing the various personal and professional transformations she has undergone. She reflects on the catalysts for change in her life, including her divorce and the realization of her true passions. Mel emphasises the importance of investing in oneself, the power of implementation, and the necessity of embracing failure as a part of growth. Her insights provide valuable lessons for women in business and anyone looking to transform their lives. In this conversation, Mel Browne and Michelle discuss the challenges women face with perfectionism, the benefits of embracing a portfolio career, and the importance of financial literacy. They explore how testing ideas can lead to successful reinvention without the need to quit one's job. Mel shares her journey in creating a financial literacy course aimed at empowering women to take control of their finances and encourages listeners to dare to be wealthy.Key Resources from Mel are here;-https://www.melissabrowne.com.au/onequestion You can find Mel on insta at @melbrowne.money and online at www.melissabrowne.com.auHead to michellejcox.com for more information about the ONE QUESTION podcast, your host or today's guestsConnect with Michelle on Linkedin here:- @MichelleJCoxConnect with Michelle on Instagram here:- @michellejcoxConnect with Michelle on Facebook here - @michellejcoxAND, if you have a burning topic you'd love people to talk more about, or know someone who'd be great to come on the One Question podcast, please get in touch;- hello@michellejcox.com

We are very excited to welcome today's guest, Valerie Gordon, who is an award-winning television producer, content creator and longtime storyteller. Through her career and communications strategy firm Commander-in-She, Valerie offers keynote presentations, group workshops and personal and corporate strategizing to help clients harness the power of story.   A 10-time Emmy and 3-time Edward R. Murrow award winner, Valerie's television work has appeared on HBO Sports, CBS News, ESPN, Weekend Today and Lifetime.  Through Commander-in-She, Valerie combines her storytelling background with her passion for advocating for women in the workforce. She provides high-achieving women with the career tools and communication skills necessary to ascend the leadership ladder and works with corporations to develop and retain future talent.   Her recent book, “Fire Your Narrator! A Storyteller's Guide to Getting Out of Your Head and Into Your Life” explores the impact and influence of the stories we tell ourselves on our career success and satisfaction.  In today's conversation we discuss: Valerie's story about how she left her once satisfying career as a producer after she found herself crying to her dog on the floor of her closet.   How Valerie started asking herself what she didn't want anymore so she could figure out what she did want.  The “red flag” words from our inner narrator that hold us back from achieving what we desire. How to get out of your head, squash your inner narrator, turn down the volume of the gremlin voice and become the author of your own narrative. How to name our inner narrator, that voice that is telling you that your not good or worth enough. How to flick the inner narrator off your shoulder and tell it where to go. We also discuss Valerie's new book: "Fire Your Narrator! A Storyteller's Guide to Getting Out of Your Head and Into Your Life".    Valerie's book is funny, real and vulnerable with lots of stories that you can relate to; we highly recommend reading it. As you listen to today's conversation we invite you to think about the stories in your head, and ask yourself how are they serving you now?  What do you want your story to be?  And what are you going to name that inner narrator so that you can tell it where to go the next time he/she shows up. The many benefits to cultivating a spiritual practice are obvious to those with experience—but it's a pursuit too long dismissed by skeptics and scientists. That is, until now.Recent research in neuroscience, genetics, and epidemiology now establish that humans are not only universally equipped with a capacity for (and inclination towards) spirituality, but that our brains, when so awakened, become more resilient and robust—and our lives more meaningful and content. Here today to discuss the emerging and fascinating ‘science of spirituality' is the woman who helped pioneer it, Lisa Miller, PhD.A generational leading psychologist on the benefits of spirituality, Lisa is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her doctorate in psychology. She is currently a professor of psychology and education at Teachers College, Columbia University, and is the Founder and Director of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute, the first Ivy League graduate program and research institute in spirituality and psychology.Dr. Miller is widely published in leading academic journals, has appeared on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and Weekend Today as an expert, and her first book, The Spiritual Child was a New York Times bestseller. Her latest work (and the focus of today's discussion) is The Awakened Brain, a groundbreaking exploration of the neuroscience of spirituality that sets a bold new paradigm for health, healing, and resilience. My exchange with Dr. Miller is centered on the intersection of hard science and spirituality—what neurology, neurobiology, genetics, epidemiology, and psychiatry can tell us about the mental health benefits of cultivating your own awakened brain.I think you will find her work fascinating, full of counterintuitive findings and practical advice on the many concrete ways to access your own innate spirituality—and more importantly, how this can be deployed to enhance things like grit, optimism, and resilience. In addition, we explore the many ways you can leverage the awakened brain to insulate yourself against addiction, trauma, and depression.Ultimately, this is a conversation about how to build a life of greater joy and enhanced personal fulfillment to better thrive and contribute to the greater well-being of all.To read more, click here. You can also watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. An intellectual delight from start to finish, I thoroughly enjoyed talking to Dr. Miller, and I sincerely hope you enjoy the listen.Peace + Plants, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Shelly and her husband Darren co-founded Shell Shocked Media around five years ago. Like so many of us she has found freedom in the purpose and creativity found in running her own business. It's fair to say that of all of the guests I have interviewed for the Decoding Purpose Podcast that Shelly’s charisma and bubbly nature creates a feel good factor which I have no doubt is one of the reason she has pursued a purpose that has enabled her to influence and inspire audiences all over the world.Influence is certainly a subject we explored as one of the most significant ways we can shift our message into a movement or amplify our purpose. Along with unpacking shills in influence we also got raw, vulnerable and went purposefully deep. This included looking at the social expectations placed on women with a focus on her conscious decision to be child free, the importance of diverse and inclusive representation in the media including whether the media should be leading the way with regards to social expression. We unpacked incredible stories of resilience with a focus on the power of purpose in the bounce back, and finally we focussed on what it takes to act on the 2 minutes of courage that could change your life. With all of the above in mind, get ready today to land in the world of Shelly Horton. The Shelly Show is one of charisma and razzle dazzle on a foundation of deep introspection, integrity and emotional intelligence.

The Experts powered by Media Stable

Erin is one of our favourite media people. Her personality just clicked with Media Stable's in-person annual event #MeetTheMedia and we have been in regular contact for years. Erin Bouda is the Supervising Producer for Channel 9's Weekend TODAY.  Erin knows her stuff when it comes to understanding the show, the hosts, the style and the type of stories they are interested in.  The key to understanding media is to take the time to understand the show and the audience you are pitching to. Weekend National TV is very different to the weekday hustle of Breakfast, Morning and Afternoon TV.  There is more time that can be applied to a story on the weekend.  The tips and advice Erin goes through is critical for any expert looking to influence or engage.  The gold nuggets were rolling out from our special guest this week and here is a short summary of it: "Know the show, know the host, know the audience.  Keep in mind segments are 3-4 minutes long - keep your pitch short.  Be available and say YES.  Why is the story right for now?  Newsjacking and put your hand up to say you have an expertise"  Both experienced and novice experts need to take on this advice. We are big fans of Erin and her work, as you will be able to tell when you listen to the podcast. However, you will also sense that the relationship is very mutual.  Early in the podcast Erin says 'the media needs the expert as much as the expert needs the media'.  This statement is so true and when you can develop a mutually beneficial relationship for both parties it is a win win.

She holds a Master of Arts in Humanities and Social Thought from New York University, a Bachelor of Science in Modern Dance from SUNY Brockport, and honorary doctorates from SUNY Brockport, Rhode Island College and Otis College of Art and Design. Streb has received numerous other awards and fellowships including the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1987; a Brandeis Creative Arts Award in 1991; two New York Dance and Performance Awards (Bessie Awards), in 1988 and 1999 for her “sustained investigation of movement;” a Doris Duke Artist Award in 2013; and over 30 years of on-going support from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). In 2009, Streb was the Danspace Project Honoree. She served on Mayor Bloomberg’s Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission and is a member of the board of the Jerome Foundation. #44 - How Can I Still Love My Body If I Want To Get to a Healthier Place? with Registered Dietitian Holley Grainger

Body Kindness

Holley Grainger is a registered dietitian -- "the expert", but even experts struggle. Holley e-mailed me privately and asked about a family member who wanted to try the HCG diet (on top of the other dozens she tried that have not worked) and I asked her to join me on a podcast to discuss it. In this episode Holley opens up about her genetically larger body compared to her peers, her weight gain during her fertility treatments that gave her two healthy girls. "How can I still love my body at the same time while I want to get to a healthier place", she asks. Weight concerns make sense because our culture sucks. I help Holley understand that diet culture keeps her stuck in an "I’m not good enough" mental place and continually believing her body is a "problem." I share a story about a client who was body shamed by her gynecologist and the Kevin Hall NIH research on NBC’s The Biggest Loser that shows the metabolic reasons why dieting -- cutting calories and over exercise -- is followed by a “fight back” from the body that leads to weight regain. I also define HAES for Holley (gee, wish we learned this in nutrition school.) Finally, I explain how I would help her family member, if this person was a client of mine, essentially to help her understand there is a process for changing habits and mindset that is weight neutral to improve well-being regardless of any changes to one’s appearance, and even IF the client really wants to lose weight. I’m glad Holley had the courage and interest to speak to me about personal concerns in a public setting. Hopefully it helps you too. Tune in and let me know what you think by leaving a rating or review. About Holley Holley Grainger is a nationally recognized lifestyle, culinary, and nutrition expert. Hack in a Flak Jacket is a startlingly honest account of experiencing war and terrorism from the frontline by Peter Stefanovic, one of Australia's leading journalists and foreign correspondents. For almost ten years Peter Stefanovic was Channel 9's foreign correspondent in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. During that time he witnessed more than his fair share of death and destruction - all while putting his own personal safety very much in the firing line. This is his memoir of those experiences - from wars and conflicts in the Middle East, to terrorist attacks in London and Norway through to royal weddings. His time spent covering these world events has opened his eyes to the human condition - and in many ways affected him personally. Peter Stefanovic was the Europe, Africa, and Middle East correspondent for the Nine Network, from 2008 to 2015. He reported from the scene of major news events around the world for Nine News, the Today Show, and A Current Affair.
