Note: One of the quotes I share in this episode contains a swear word (a gentle one, all things considered), but please beware in case you're sensitive or in case you're listening around little ears!About a month ago, I was scrolling through Instagram and came across a quote that read,"Unconditional love does not mean unconditional tolerance."It got me to thinking... Unconditional love is something that's spoken about a lot, especially in spiritual circles. But the loose and flowing nature of its definition has made it susceptible to misinterpretation. It's imperative that we recognize and honor this distinction between unconditional love and unconditional tolerance—the former fosters unity consciousness whereas the latter can lead us to linger in toxic or even dangerous situations. In this episode, we explore unconditional love, unconditional tolerance, and the vast but often overlooked differences that separate these two distinct energies.SourcesLaPorte, D. Spiritual health isn't about following a specific religion, meditating on a mountaintop, or taking the sacrament (unless you want to do those things). It's about something deeper—our connection to something greater than ourselves, our capacity for faith, and the hope that carries us through life's challenges. Dr. Lisa Miller is a New York Times bestselling author of The Spiritual Child and The Awakened Brain. She's a professor in the Clinical Psychology Program at Teachers College, Columbia University, and the founder of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute—the first Ivy League graduate program dedicated to the study of spirituality and psychology. Her groundbreaking research has been published in over 100 peer-reviewed articles, and she's a sought-after speaker, working with the U.S. military, Fortune 500 companies, schools, and healthcare organizations to integrate spirituality into mental health and leadership. Spirituality isn't just a belief system—it's a proven driver of resilience, purpose, and well-being. In this episode, we dive into: ✔️ How spiritual health impacts mental resilience and emotional well-being ✔️ The neuroscience behind spirituality and how it physically changes the brain ✔️ Why faith—whether in God, the universe, or your inner wisdom—makes you stronger ✔️ Practical ways to nurture your spiritual health (without needing a formal practice) Because here's the truth: Whatever created you, lives within you—and that alone makes you inherently valuable, worthy, and powerful. In a world of surface-level interactions and quick fixes, what does it mean to truly connect? Today, Nicole is joined by Talia Fox, CEO of KUSI Global and author of The Power of Conscious Connection, to explore how authentic relationships and intentional leadership can transform our lives and work. Talia's expertise as a psychologist and “inspiration Jedi” has guided leaders in organizations ranging from the U.S. Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs to Harvard and Howard Universities. Her mission? To help us trade transactional interactions for meaningful, conscious connections that align our values with our actions. In this episode, we explore: Why connection is a brave, messy, and essential act. How listening is the most underrated and impactful leadership skill. Tools for building conscious equity and connected cultures. How to align values with actions for deeper relationships at work and in life.
I've been intrigued by the sudden superhero concept for a long time. Peter Parker gets bitten by a spider and turns into spiderman. Bruce Banner gets exposed to radiation and turns into the Hulk. Some other guy or girl falls into a chemical vat and develops super powers. None of them chose those things to happen. But in our daily lives, seldom do specific and acute things happen to us like that. In most cases, we have choices to make, and I find that in seemingly hard circumstances, we'd rather there was just one, forced circumstance. Choosing between what looks like challenging options all around can overwhelm us. My muse for this topic is the guest from the previous episode, Talia Fox, author of The Power of Conscious Connection: 4 Habits To Transform How You Live And Lead. The beginning of her book tells the story of her crying in a stairwell while holding the baby she is a single parent to, feeling at the end of her rope. After the sobbing subsided it just hit her that, “Something has to change.” And she changed it. But it brings up this issue of choice and how it feels when we feel backed in a corner. I have a powerful story of drive for you. One that starts with tears and today is an impressive lists of stats. Let's start with the impressive list. Talia Fox is a leadership strategist. She holds an M.Ed. in counseling psychology from Howard University and she is a Harvard University Fellow. With her extensive background in psychology and education she assists leaders in developing successful strategies for complex missions, ranging from defense systems to healthcare initiatives. As CEO of KUSI Global, Inc., Talia helps organizations like the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Harvard University, Transunion, the National Institutes of Health, Howard University, and the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs maximize human potential by leveraging strategic intelligence and helps individuals and organizations foster connected cultures and promote conscious equity. Now Talia has a new book titled, The Power of Conscious Connection: 4 Habits To Transform How You Live And Lead. But where we start in our conversation is Talia as a single mom, holding onto her baby and crying in a stairwell in her apartment building. At the end of her rope. And that is where she resolved to not let her circumstances decide her fate and to quit identifying as a lacking and struggling young woman. Here is what Talia says, “I decided to choose a different way of existing in the world. People can often be completely absorbed by their problems, she said. They don't jump out of bed, they drag themselves through feeling sad, tired, broken and disappointed. I started asking myself, what does this situation need from me today to be most successful? I became conscious how my choices impacted my outcomes. I became obsessed with human and social behavior and how our identities shape our choices and our lives. I was struck by how the seemingly small choices I made had the biggest impact on my mental well being. Sometimes veering off the well-trodden path of others and choosing a different path can lead to life-altering decisions. This is the story friends. This will be a good ride. In this episode we tackle a topic that often leaves parents feeling frustrated and helpless: communication with teenagers. Did you know that according to a recent survey, 78% of parents report feeling like they're constantly struggling to communicate effectively with their teenagers? And it's no wonder. Teenagers are going through a period of immense physical and emotional change, and they're trying to figure out who they are and where they fit in the world. This can make it difficult for them to open up to their parents, even about things that are important to them. So, how can we, as parents, encourage open and honest communication with our teenagers? Today, we're joined by Ruth Klien, author of Conscious Connection and founder of the nonprofit Universal Mom, to discuss strategies for overcoming communication breakdowns with our teens. The 'Parenting Teens with Dr. Cam' Podcast: Your Guide to Navigating Adolescence Without Losing Your Mind. Talia shares her unique approach to leadership and her upcoming book, "The Power of Conscious Connection: 4 Habits to Transform How You Live and Lead." Talia's book focuses on four habits: Listen, Observe, Value, and Engage. She stresses the importance of happiness in achieving success and introduces key leadership skills: emotional intelligence, systems thinking, and cultural competence. Talia also discusses dealing with diverse values on a team, the significance of aligning values in both concept and behavior, and the value of practicing restraint for gaining wisdom. Key Takeaways [02:22] Talia Fox, CEO of KUSI Global, Inc., is a leadership strategist with a unique mission: making people happy and improving lives. She emphasizes that personal happiness is the key to achieving remarkable results in business and leadership. [03:58] Talia shares her unique approach to leadership. She introduces the KUSI competency model, comprising Knowledge, Understanding, Strategy, and Implementation. Talia identifies three game-changing skills for leaders: Emotional intelligence, Systems thinking, Cultural competence. Talia explores how these competencies relate to disciplined leadership with an emphasis on adaptability. [11:21] Talia discusses the importance of emotional intelligence, systems thinking, and cultural competence in leadership. These competencies work together to navigate complex situations and promote adaptability. Talia introduces Conscious Equity, emphasizing its holistic approach to leadership development. Addressing resistance, she suggests embracing it as an opportunity for growth and unity by focusing on the heart of the matter: people. [19:10] Talia introduces her upcoming book, "The Power of Conscious Connection: 4 Habits to Transform How You Live and Lead," released on October 24, 2023. She discusses the book's four essential habits: Listen, Observe, Value, and Engage. These habits encourage individuals to slow down, gain self-awareness, and connect with their inner wisdom. Talia explains how each habit serves a specific purpose, such as emotional intelligence, systems thinking, and cultural competence. The book emphasizes customization and aligning behavior with personal values, creating a positive impact in one's life and the world. [22:35] Jim and Jan ask Talia to talk about understanding your values, assumptions, beliefs, and expectations (VABE) when communicating with others. Talia discusses an exercise called "Identity Therapy" where you choose a role model and think about how they would tackle your challenges. This helps you explore your values and recognize any habits that might be hindering your progress. Talia emphasizes that values can change as you grow, and it's essential to align them with your goals and make deliberate choices that reflect those values in your life. [25:18] Talia shares a powerful childhood experience that set her on a path to the work she does today. At eight years old, she helped her illiterate father navigate contracts. A key moment was when she confronted a restaurant hostess, realizing that her actions should lead to a better outcome for everyone. This early experience inspired her to pursue leadership development as a way to foster connection and improve people's work experiences. [28:54] Talia's Love System - Listen, Observe, Value, Engage - is a foundation for success. Barriers to its effectiveness include ego, judgment, and trying to change others. Focus on practicing these skills without ego and judgment. Embrace the basics of human interaction: listening, understanding systems, aligning with values, and engaging effectively. [34:07] Talia shares insights into dealing with diverse values on a team. Understanding that values may be shared in concept but not in behavior is crucial. Aligning with values requires a shared mental model of what those values look like in action. Talia shares the significance of practicing restraint and how it can lead to greater wisdom. Talia's book, "The Power of Conscious Connection: Four Habits to Transform How You Live and Lead," is highly recommended. [43:14] Closing quote: I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor. — Henry David Thoreau Quotable Quotes "Make the people happy and better and listen to them without bias." "Emotional intelligence is a game changer." "Systems thinking is the capacity to look at things and analyze them, not based on our bias and our experiences, but really the feedback loops of what is in the moment and what we're seeing that's changing as time goes on." "Cultural competence is the person who is willing to know. 'I don't know about everyone in this room, and I am willing to show up and be present in the moment.'" "It's one of those things where you're engaging in a very present way and allowing yourself to be open to new ideas and new approaches." "And so with resistance, we turn that resistance into an opportunity to connect and to identify key questions or the one thing that needs to be addressed." "Leadership is about people, and the only thing that we're working on is being better at interacting and managing, leading, inspiring, moving people forward." "The Power of Conscious Connection is about being conscious about who you are in the world and connected to your power to make a difference." "Listening is an opportunity for us to slow down, and it is a portal to wisdom." "Values, Assumptions, Beliefs and Expectations. When you're listening and observing, pay attention to other people's values, assumptions, beliefs, expectations before you engage." "There's something tricky about values. You've got to figure out what's yours, what's other people's values. There may be some things that you value that are just bad habits that are holding you back." "Conscious equity is not a license to start looking at the world and identifying all of the lack of listening, observing, alignment with values, or poor engagement going on. We start with modeling that experience and being patient, kind, and open for the journey that others are on." "Observation is associated with systems thinking. Now, you're not just observing by way of looking, but I think that's good too, with your senses." "Values, that's an opportunity for you to pause for a moment and say, this is where you customize life." "It matters less what you do, how you do it. It matters more why you do it." "You can share what you do, but you don't want to judge or even try to begin to get... judgment can really cloud all of these skills." "The emotional intelligence, systems thinking and cultural competence are so critical." "I think sometimes we get values confused with choices and behaviors, preferences and desires." "When we're really hyper achievers and we're very excited about getting results, sometimes we need to just pause a moment and hold back." What if you could heal your body by healing your emotional and mental health, first? In this episode of The Darin Olien show, we unravel the intricate links between physical ailments and emotional and mental health. Dr. Sam shares her unique perspective on the manifestation of symptoms as a result of suppressed truths. She explains the role of Qigong, a Chinese form of energetic medicine in unveiling these unspoken truths. We float into discussions about spiritual connection and personal growth, highlighting the importance of self-awareness and its revelations. Dr. Sam also walks you through practical tips to improve your biochemistry, brain activity, and mindset, encompassing everything from journaling to detoxification. We end our enlightening discourse reflecting on the value of conscious connection, the power of embracing growth, and the need to cherish our fleeting time. Dr. Saman Faramarzi (also known as Dr. Sam), is the Founder of SAFA Life and Wellness. She is also the leading Naturopathic Doctor at Remedy Place. She received her doctorate from Bastyr University, one of the nation's top ND programs. She has over 10 years of clinical experience, specializing in nutritional biochemistry, the microbiome, mind-body medicine, and intravenous therapy. What we discuss: (0:00:00) - Exploring Naturopathic Medicine and Healing (0:08:49) - Addressing Obstacles and Nourishing the Body (0:14:23) - Spiritual Connection and Personal Growth (0:31:00) - Cultivating Energy and Connection (0:34:51) - Exploring Qigong, Gratitude, and Detoxification (0:50:37) - Conscious Men and Quality Supplements (1:02:40) - Embracing Growth and Appreciating Time Key takeaways: We are constantly being fed things from both our inner and outer world that create an inbalance in us and which we're not properly addressing. This means we are storing the burden of negative emotions in our body in addition to the chemicals that we are exposed to in the outer world. As a result, certain body parts can't break down these negative emotions and toxins because the cup is too full and it's not getting drained properly. For example, our liver tends to take on anger and resentment, in addition to certain toxins such as mold. The reason we are all depleted is because we're not nourishing our mind and our soul. We have been thought to take care of this physical body and no one's taught us that we have to take care of our energetic body and our spirit body as well. Spirit controls energy, which controls matter and it's a powerful thing that goes bi-directionally; matter controls energy, which controls spirit as well. Many of us look for our happiness in other people. We look at our significant others, our kids, and even our pets as a source of joy and happiness. However, this is the wrong place to look for and depend on for real happiness because they can disappear at any second. Plus, this puts an immense pressure on the people you love. Depending on people for happiness depletes them of their own energy in order to make ourselves vital.
