In this RE-LISTEN episode Elaine chats with actor, writer, director Virginia Gay. We talk about Virginia's Fringe First award winning show Cyrano. We talk talking old stories and bringing them to new audiences without repeating the same story but bringing a fresh perspective to it and how vital that is for us all. We talk about the wonderful tool that is comedy that let's us reach our audience in an authentic and truly moving way. We chat the joy of theatre, words, life, queer love and so, so much more. Cyrano is on now at the Park Theatre London 11th December 2024 -11th January 2025 - Tickets: parktheatre.co.uk/event/cyrano/ CYRANO Virginia Gay's joyous, gender-flipped retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac, packed with music, wit and aching romance, is a love letter to hope; to language and desire; to the irrepressible magic of theatre. A big-hearted, irreverent rom-com, perfect for a feel good Christmas treat. Cyrano is the most interesting person in any room – a wordsmith, a charmer. She works twice as hard and runs twice as fast as the pretty boys, because she's deeply ashamed of something about herself. Enter Roxanne: brilliant and beautiful, with a penchant for poetry and a way with words, just like Cyrano. But Roxanne only has eyes for Yan: hot, manly Yan; all brawn-and-no-brains Yan; who is dumbstruck around Roxanne. Probably shy, right? Until suddenly he starts saying the most amazing things. But it's not Yan writing these perfect love scenes, it's Cyrano … Virginia Gay “Virginia Gay graduated WAAPA, then spent four years pretending to be a nurse on All Saints, six months pretending to be cop on Savage River (ABC), and then five years on Winners & Losers, where she pretended to know a lot about high finance. That last one, particularly, was a stretch. She won a Sydney Theatre Award for Best Actress for Calamity Jane, starred in the film Judy & Punch which premiered at Sundance, and wrote and directed her first short film Paper Cut, which made Tropfest finals. In 2020 she wrote two new plays: an adaptation of Cyrano for MTC and The Boomkak Panto for Belvoir, which premiered December 2021. Director Samuel Van Grinsven returns to our screens with his sophomore feature film, Went Up the Hill, a powerful drama about an abandoned child, Jack (Dacre Montgomery), attending the wake of a mother he never knew, and encountering her grieving widow, Jill (Vicky Krieps). As Jack and Jill navigate the fractured existence they find themselves in, Elizabeth's spirit emerges in curious and strange ways by possessing each character, resulting in a narrative that flows into the realm of being a possession drama, while never truly immersing itself in the genre expectations that one might have when they hear that this a film with a 'grief driven possession narrative'. Like Samuel's first film, Sequin in a Blue Room, there's an unexpected nature to Went Up the Hill which comes from a foundational level, and is realised in the films sound design, its choice of location - a remote farm in Aotearoa/New Zealand - and the notion that this is a triple hander film delivered by two powerful, impactful performances from Dacre and Vicky. There's an emotional vulnerability to the film that reveals itself as it progresses in a way that feels real and lived-in. How that emotional vulnerability was achieved is what's explored and discussed in the following conversation with Dacre Montgomery, recorded ahead of the films Australian premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival on Saturday 26 October, where Dacre will be in attendance, and Sunday 3 November. In the following interview, Dacre talk about his studies at WAAPA, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, before discussing the tangible aspects of his performance that helped Vicky and himself ground their characters in the moment, while also being able to immerse themselves in the role of Elizabeth as she possesses their characters. Went Up the Hill is another towering achievement of emotional filmmaking from Samuel Van Grinsven, a filmmaker who is defiantly making his mark on global cinema with stories that feel deeply personal, yet completely universal at the same time. In this podcast you'll learn foundational techniques designed to develop a sense of ease and confidence in front of camera while delivering down the lens with a presentation style performance. This sense of ease is increasingly relevant as many directors and casting agents are calling on zoom and live conferencing as a means of 'on-camera' communication. You'll also find this skill set useful for many tv commercials where the talent is required to speak directly to camera presenter-style, and it's a fantastic adjacent skill set that can help you develop another income stream as a TV presenter or program host.

Eddie Grey was born and raised in Sydney. An accomplished musician and talented performer, he graduated from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts and quickly garnered an impressive list of credits in productions of Spring Awakening (for the Sydney Theatre Company), and commercial productions of Legally Blonde, Wicked (as Boq) and The Book of Mormon.Whilst at WAAPA he started writing his own material. His first work was Frau Fangus' Revenge, a musical about a masochistic Weimar-era piano teacher who falls in love with her student and makes the student murder her husband. Y'know.  Standard musical comedy fodder!Following his successful forays on the Australian stage, he took the plunge and moved to New York, where he has performed in the National tour of The Book of Mormon - a show in which he also made his Broadway debut. Eddie recently completed a stint in the Broadway run of the musical Harmony, written by Barry Manilow. Both gigs came about under fascinating circumstances. It wasn't until the pandemic hit that Eddie really started writing again, completing a postgraduate course in screenwriting for television at UCLA. The first short film he wrote and produced, titled Weather or Not, was based on a story by David Sedaris that Eddie optioned from the author himself. It went on to a successful festival run and distribution and also paved the way for his second short, The Singing Telegram which had its LA premiere at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Currently, he has a television project under development with Aurora Pictures in Sydney and another with Kilo Pictures in London.STAGES caught up with Eddie on a recent visit to New York where we learned so much more about his talent to amuse, and craft engaging theatre and film. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Formed in 1993, Yirra Yaakin provides the means and environment to assist the nurturing of Aboriginal community cultural development. Yirra Yaakin means ‘stand tall' in the Nyoongar language. At the commencement of 2019, Yamaji woman, Eva Grace Mullaley was appointed as Artistic Director. Eva Grace grew up predominantly in the South West of Western Australia and moved to Perth in 2002. She is a graduate of the Aboriginal Theatre course at WAAPA. She soon joined Yirra Yaakin as an actor performing in Whaloo is That You?, and with Black Swan in the production, Tear From a Glass Eye. In 2005 Eva Grace lectured the Aboriginal students at WAAPA on script writing and directed the collaborative piece Black Tracks. She assisted David Milroy during the Windmill Baby creative development for Yirra Yaakin and was Stage manager during its first public season. She has keenly embraced the extensive roles existing in the theatre. Such work has included roles as a tour manager, producer, event manager, dramaturge, actor and extensive time in administration - essential experiences that have informed her work as a director. At her appointment, Eva Grace was looking forward “to continuing such an inspirational legacy and building on the shoulders of those that came before (her) to lead Yirra Yaakin to a new era.” Four years on, it is a delight to return to an early conversation with Yirra Yaakin Artistic Director, Eva Grace Mullaley. Lucky episode number 6! In this weeks episode, we were so stoked to be able to talk to our friend and fellow WAAPA grad Sam Corlett. Sam has shot to success since graduating a few years ago, and on this ep we got to chatting about why Sam's tight-knit family has inspired his career, the importance of taking care of your mind as an actor (and a human!), and what life on an international set has been like. A little bit about Sam: Sam graduated from Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2018. Shortly after graduating from WAAPA, Sam was cast as “Young Luke” in Robert Connelly's feature film adaptation of best selling novel THE DRY, produced by Bruna Papandrea and starring Eric Bana and Genevieve O'Reilly. Following this he played “Prince Caliban” in the final two seasons of Netflix original television series CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA, starring Kiernan Shipka and Miranda Otto. Sam has recently been announced as the series lead in the Vikings spinoff series VIKINGS: VALHALLA starring as Leif Eriksson. Alongside his acting career, Sam is also a visual and creative artist. He recently designed a limited edition men's jewellery capsule “Corlett Exclusives” in collaboration with the brand Merchants Of The Sun. All pieces feature hand-drawn symbols by Sam and all profits of this range are donated to the Cancer Council. We loved this episode with Sam- he's such a kind and warm soul and it was a pleasure to chat about where life has taken him! And we're back again. Just when we thought life would get easier...it threw some more curveballs at us! But none the less here is Episode 5 of Season 2! On this episode we super were fortunate to speak with Mia Morrissey. A massive girl crush of ours who is not only killing it in the business but created 'The Gained Project', an amazing initiative encouraging people to celebrate what they may have 'gained' during COVID. As we talk about the project and Mias career to date, we explore the challenges facing women in the industry, living with Endometriosis and the importance of self love in a world that tries to tell you the opposite. Here is a little bit about Mia: Mia is a Sydney-based actor who grew up within the performing arts sector. Being no stranger to the entertainment industry, Mia Morrissey started working as an actor at the age of sixteen when she starred in the critically acclaimed short film Bat Eyes, which featured in the Venice Film Festival. Following this, Mia went on to study acting full time at WAAPA. Since graduating, Mia has appeared in a number of works including ABC's “Harrow”, Alice in Slasherland, Home and Away, and most recently played the role of Mimi in Rent at the Sydney Opera House. Mia has also started “The Gained Project”, a platform that celebrates all that or bodies do, and champions the notion that we are bigger than what our bodies look like, with the hashtag what have you gained. Lets goooo Episode 2 Season 2! This week we are bringing you a chat with the incredible Brent Hill (Hamilton, School of Rock) and Meghan O'Shea (Singin' In The Rain, Grease). At the end of 2020 we were lucky enough to work with Brent and Meghan as Director and Choreographer for Merrily We Roll Along at WAAPA. Chatting with each other we knew we wanted to bring these discussions to the podcast, so we were so keen to catch up with Brent and Meg as they further shared on this episode their experiences with burnout, boundaries as a performer, and ways of finding your own joy and creativity through long running shows. Hello! Thanks for tuning in to episode 11! This is a very special episode, because this time on the pod we embarked on our first three way conversation! Jarrod Draper, Lyndon Watts and Shannen Alyce Quan are all phenomenal artists in their own rights, and have been incredible leaders of change within the Australian musical theatre industry this year. A few months ago we were lucky enough to have all three zoom in and chat to us and our fellow WAAPA colleagues about what it means to be an ally through the BIPOC movement within the arts industry, and learned so much through this chat, so we knew it was important to have them on the podcast to relay what we heard to our listeners! A bio for our three wonderful guests below...: A proud Wiradjuri man, Jarrod is the first Indigenous graduate from the prestigious Music Theatre course at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Born and raised in Orange, country NSW, Jarrod earned a full scholarship to the Regional Conservatorium to study Music Theatre and Classical Voice, which saw him perform both nationally and internationally for several years. During his time at WAAPA, Jarrod played roles such as ‘Sam' in Lord of the Flies, ‘Black Fox' in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, ‘Louise's Soldier (pas de deux dancer)' in Carousel and most notably, ‘George' in Sunday In The Park With George, for which he was voted Male Performer of the Year by Perth Theatre Reviews. Jarrod could most recently be seen on stage in The Hayes Theatre Company's sold out production of Catch Me If You Can. Lyndon is a 2014 graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). After graduating from WAAPA, he was cast in the national Australian tour of Sweet Charity, originally staged at the Hayes Theatre. In 2015 Lyndon toured Australia in Anything Goes before going on to perform the role of Beautiful Girl Production Tenor in the Australian national tour and the international Tokyo production of Singin' in the Rain. Lyndon has performed throughout Australia in the ensemble of Disney's Aladdin where he also covered and performed the role of Jafar. Most recently, Lyndon started in the role of Bernardo in the internationally touring company of West Side Story. Shannen Alyce Quan graduated from WAAPA in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts (Music Theatre). She recently worked for Norwegian Cruise Lines playing Cynthia in Priscilla Queen of the Desert - The Musical. Prior to this she was a part of the 10th Anniversary Tour of Priscilla Queen of the Desert - The Musical as a Swing and cover Cynthia. Other theatre credits include Natalie Goodman in Next to Normal (Black Swan State Theatre Company), Shirley in Boat People (Theatre451), Wendla in Spring Awakening (CPCA), The Disappeared/The Soul in Torment in Tejas Verdes (Theatre451). She has been lucky enough to work on several new Australian musicals including playing Kelly in The Gathering (Vic Theatre Company), Seela in Post: A New Musical (Something Blue Productions), and Maia in Matthew Robinson's Atlantis. Most recently, Shannen was a swing for the national tour of Six: The musical. In this episode we spoke about our hilarious onstage mishaps, how Lyndon, Jarrod and Shannen have been moved to use their voices for change within the industry, and what it means to hold space for both joy and pain in your artistry. We really enjoyed this episode and the open, generous and fun energy Lyndon, Jarrod and Shannen bring, and we know you'll love hearing what he has to say! You can find Lyndon, Jarrod and Shannen on Instagram as @lyndoncollinswatts, @jarrod_draper and @shannenalycequan. Bridget Malcolm is an international fashion model whose career has spanned from campaigns with Ralph Lauren to Maybelline to V Magazine to Victoria's Secret and Harper's Bazaar. Listen to Dr. Allie in conversation with Bridget Malcolm as they speak on Recovery, Pre-Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and a Renewed Perspective on her mental health. Bridget Malcolm grew up in South Fremantle, a little beach town just south of Perth, spending most of her days at the beach and ballet class. She was surrounded by music—her dad plays flamenco guitar and her mother the piano – so it was little surprise when on a whim she took up the oboe and fell in love with it. After just six months, she was performing with the local university's octet and toured Europe with her high school orchestra. At age 14, she was scouted by her first modeling agency, Vivien's, “but we had to wait a year or so for me to outgrow my terrible haircut, braces, and general awkwardness.” Her first job was for Harper's Bazaar Australia, with photographer Nicole Bentley, the woman she credits with teaching her how to model. At 16, she was signed to an international agency, and before she knew it, was juggling high school and modeling work. Upon graduation, she was accepted into the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and WAAPA, but instead decided to move to New York City to pursue modeling fulltime. Throughout her modeling career Bridget suffered from a wide variety of mental health struggles, including an eating disorder and anxiety, which interfered with her ability to work. She began blogging about her experiences and was humbled by the level of connectivity and overwhelming positive reaction from people around the world. She realized that even though the pressures she faced – working in an image-based industry where the inside often gets ignored – were specific to the modeling and fashion industry, the resulting mental health issues were universal. Bridget currently lives in New York City. She continues to model and advocate for mental health in the fashion industry and has formed a peer support group for models, while also focusing on “post-modelism” life including working towards a bachelor's degree with the intention to study public health and writing her memoir. Bridget is also a classically trained oboist and musician. “My motto is progress over perfection” – Bridget Malcolm This episode was recorded in August of 2019.
