This week we just kept on making the logo bigger and bigger (and bigger) until we caught the despairing eye of legendary art director, author and, let's face it, visual Jesus, Mr Dave Dye. The art director's art director, Dave is the architect of some of the coolest advertising you've ever seen – with a hit-list of iconic ads for everyone from Adidas to Volkswagen to The Economist. He's also a champion for advertising with more wit and brains, expertly rummaging back through some forgotten ad masterpieces via his wildly popular blog and podcast, Stuff From The Loft. Finally, he's the co-author of the excellent The Howard Gossage Show, a book created with another friend of CTA, Steve Harrison. A guest so entertaining we genuinely forgot there was a running time, Dave shares the stories behind his most memorable campaigns, the lessons we can all learn from past masters, a philosophy that's all about making ads people enjoy and his optimism for the creative future of the industry. ///// Rummage around Dave's Stuff from the Loft Timestamps (05:00) - From Paperboy to Trying to Get a Job in Advertising (08:04) - Creating His Own Ads (10:25) - Changing the Approach to Cover Letters (12:33) - Getting Interviews and a Foot in the Door (20:03) - Being Bold and Distinct in Job Applications (25:27) – Optimism and Naivety in Advertising (30:02) - Challenges of Working with Established Brands (31:18) - The Potential of Digital Advertising (34:47) - The Origins of Stuff From The Loft (36:58) - The Purpose of Archiving Work (40:12) - Transitioning to a Public Archive (43:10) - Accidental Evolution into Podcasting (56:50) – Listener Questions Dave's book recommendations are: A Self-Help Guide for Copywriters by Dan Nelken The Howard Gossage Show by Steve Harrison & Dave Dye /////

Originally Published June 14, 2022. Today, we reconnect with an old friend to delve into his journey, insights, and extraordinary life! Ken Van Liew, the creator of the Modern Wealth Building Formula, initially tailored it for real estate but soon found it applicable across various fields. Ken's story is one of resilience, overcoming adversity, and continuous improvement. He and Dr. Lycka met years ago at Steve Harrison's National Publicity Summit, both embarking on their journeys as authors. Starting his professional career as a civil engineer, Ken earned two master's degrees and built an impressive career in real estate. A pivotal moment in his journey came during the World Trade Center tragedies, prompting him to reflect deeply on his life's path and impact. Ken Van Liew began his career as a civil design engineer, balancing twins and two master's degrees, with significant debt and a desire to serve others. Sixteen years later, he developed a $17M, 72,000 square foot, 113-bed assisted living facility. He then embarked on a Staten Island waterfront project, which was halted due to the World Trade Center tragedies. This pause led him to reflect on his goals and impact. Ken has syndicated and developed over a billion dollars in high-profile real estate, wholesaled 137 deals in one year as co-founder of Flipping USA, and created the Modern Wealth Building Formula, empowering thousands of investors over 20 years. A real estate titan, Ken has influenced the New York skyline and regularly speaks at NYU Real Estate Institute and Rutgers University. He is a best-selling author, a stage magic enthusiast, married for over 30 years, and the proud father of three successful children. This week, we tracked a trail through deserts, glaciers, coral reefs, paddy fields, palaces, the DMZ between the two Koreas and an Italian hilltop to catch a copywriter with a lifetime of wild experience behind him. Ciao, Andrew Jolliffe. For 25 years he's written ads, strategies, thought starters, content, manifestos and copy. Some of those have won him prizes in Cannes, Paris and New York, but more importantly, he still adores writing them. In an age where concepts cast shadows over craft, Andrew is a true craftsman. In a special episode of What Next?, best-selling author of Can't Sell, Won't Sell: Advertising, Politics and Culture Wars, Steve Harrison returns to discuss his new book which is about an unsung hero in the history of advertising: Howard Gossage. As you'll discover, Gossage got to “interactive advertising” in 1964. Back then, he was also pioneering the publicity and unpaid media-generating stunts that dominate our award shows today. But Steve says his hero's biggest lesson for us is this: if you want to attract, involve and engage your audience you must realise you are in showbusiness. After a decade dedicated to soulless data and po-faced purpose, Gossage teaches us that advertising works best when it is entertaining. And, as Steve suggests, in him you have an entertainer who wrote the most imaginative, irreverent, funny - and effective ads you'll ever see. This week we sent off a coupon to catch 1960s advertising copywriter, Howard Gossage, through the eyes and work of Steve Harrison and Dave Dye. As a copywriter, Steve tamed more Cannes Lions in his discipline than anyone else in the world. He's been on the show twice before, once guesting, once hosting, and is a great friend of …Gasp!. Dave is the true “art director's art director”. Through his career he's won everything, worked for the best agencies in the business, and the visual techniques he uses to squeeze every ounce of juice from an idea are frankly unparalleled. The pair have joined forces to pen and produce ‘The Howard Gossage Show', a fitting celebration of the fun and fame peddling ad man; one of the industry's lesser known greats. We gossip on Gossage's showmanship, breaking conventions, having half an interesting conversation through his ads, writing to somebody, stunts, fame, and so much more. At a time when advertising is disliked and avoided by most people, his legacy feels even more important now than it was 60 years ago. So listen up. ///// Here's The Howard Gossage Show Follow Steve and Dave on LinkedIn Check out Dave's Stuff From the Loft And Steve's biography on Howard Gossage Timestamps (02:34) - Quick fire questions (Posh Spice or Persil?) Howard Gossage - often dubbed the "Socrates of San Francisco," revolutionised advertising in the 1950s and 60s with his unconventional and humanistic approach. So it took two equally unconventional and humanistic creatives - Steve Harrsion and Dave Dye, to write - no, craft - a book documenting some of the most captivating and exemplary pieces of Gossage's short but prolific career, producing a form of advertising so ahead of its time that we're only now catching up with it. The problem is, that, like the man in the river surrounded by crocodiles, we've forgotten that the original objective was to get to the other side. We've forgotten the point of advertising - and that is to entertain. Gossage was a born showman and it lived and breathed in his work, which is what makes it sadly unique. If you've never been Gossaged before, I suggest you start here. If you have, then I hope you'll appreciate this podcast and an opportunity to reminisce on a lost period of advertising that we still have a chance to reclaim and make advertising great again. Thank you to Steve Harrison and Dave Dye for a memorable podcast. If it sounds a bit jumpy, I apologise and hope that it doesn't spoil your listening enjoyment. We had to record it in two goes and splice the best bits together because of a technical SNAFU. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

As the podcast turn 3 years old the boys come together to ask if the original mission statement (or anything whatsoever!) has been achieved. We listen to Justin's opening words from the very first podcast and realise that we have achieved zero personal growth in the intervening period, even if Justin no longer sounds like Mickey Mouse!!We discuss the ever-decreasing size of modern shin pads and the kick-ability of Jack Grealish, very small hard hats, Dawson and the Dullards, Mayonnaise on Chinese food, why we don't think Blue Cheese Brett should use power tools, Pete spends £20 million on an injured striker whilst Carl suggested Andy Caroll!!! Carl aspires to be thrown out of Euro Disney – prompting Pete to tell his wife's favourite joke, Peanut butter cost and texture are critiqued, Orange Juice with or without bits nearly starts a row, Pete bows to peer pressure, Carl confesses to unfairly incriminating his dog before Jason tries to make us all dip toast in tea – Carl confesses to strawberry milkshake fries and Pete remembers he has invented something similarly disgusting. Justin confesses to multiple visits to a “Garlic Farm” on the Isle of Wight – Pete and Carl interrogate this as Justin has been known to fabricate these things (see Opera singers for details). We go through peoples' various meetings with Watford players, Carl uses the word photosynthesis unnecessarily to Gifton Noel Williams, Pete remembers the day, Steve Harrison, former left back, coach and manager accused him of vandalism. Carl then remembers that he too was accused of crime by a footballer with a dodgy Russian accent! Tales involving Micah Hyde, Nicky Wright, Lloydinho, Marlon King and others included. Jason is back again racing to a urinal with not quite a Watford legend, before tequila drinking tales with a genuine Watford legend! We get on to instruments not mastered via Luther all to challenge Carl to play Z-cars on the recorder before revelations of cheese sandwiches and Elton John!! A great question from Peter Lee sees the guy's debate where genuine criticism ends and hysteria and nonsense starts – the guys answer in a way that can only described as hysterical nonsense.Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed in any way through the last 3 years – we are s grateful.COYH!This Podcast has been created and uploaded by Do Not Scratch Your Eyes. 'I learned he was not the dictator the players thought he was' – John WardWe meet Graham Taylor's backroom team, who embraced the gaffer's inimitable style, and created The Watford Way. Both John Ward and Steve Harrison had been signed by Taylor as players. Tom Walley had hung up his boots when Taylor arrived in 1977 and had built a youth development system to rival the best clubs in the country. Every fairytale has to come to an end sometime. After the shortlived Dave Bassett era, Watford turned to the continuity candidate, Steve Harrison, who had been part of Graham Taylor's coaching staff throughout their most successful seasons. But Harrison – by his own admission – was not cut out for management and although the team made a good stab at making an immediate return to the First Division, they fell short in the play-offs. The glory days had passed and it would be the best part of a decade before they would be back at Vicarage Road, and it would take the return of Graham Taylor to bring them about. But that is another story...This has been Enjoy the Game, which was written and published by Lionel Birnie in 2010. The audio series was read by Colin Mace and was produced by Jon Moonie of From the Rookery End. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A lot has changed in the sausage-making industry over the past 75 years, such as consumer trends and overall expansion. But at least one thing has stayed the same – the need and appreciation for great employees. This is the message from Steve Harrison, the vice president and general manager of Old Wisconsin Sausage in Sheboygan County. Old Wisconsin Sausage is celebrating 75 years of sausage making. In 2022, 85% of Cannes' Grand Prix winners were social purpose/charity related campaigns. Advertising's most influential champion of social purpose, P&G's Marc Pritchard, surprised and even shocked many in the industry by announcing that we needed to now prioritise generating growth over doing good. That's an argument Steve Harrison has been making since the launch of his book "Can't Sell, Won't Sell: Advertising, Politics and Culture Wars. Why adland has stopped selling and started saving the world". Here he discusses what the IPA called "the most provocative advertising book in years" in what could well be Rishad's most provocative podcast in years!

Whence Came You? - Freemasonry discussed and Masonic research for today's Freemason
This week, we tackle the first in a series of episodes and topics about little-known organizations and philosophical quirks. This week we're talking about Martinism. What is it? How many branches are there, and where did it come from? Then we'll talk about the luxury of anger, something Freemasons don't really have. In a piece by Kristine Wilson-Slack, she tells us exactly why. Then, Bro. Steve Harrison stops by for the Masonic Minute. We're all pretty familiar with the Morgan affair. We even know that a body was recovered, but that it probably wasn't Morgan. But there was a second body that was recovered, and the effects which were contained with the body stand to blow the case wide open again. Steve Harrison tells all. We'll wrap it up with a look at an archetype. Are you vigilant? Are you searching for truth? All this and more, stay tuned! This week, is there value in the rubbish of the temple? What do those less than perfect stones do for us for the rest of our lives? Could they be lessons preparing us for future obstacles? Then we'll hear a response from a festive board regarding the 47th problem of Euclid. At a recent festive board, one Brother brings a personal touch to his 47th problem of Euclid response in a special segment he's recorded for us. Then, a letter to the Brothers the world over about the importance of the esoteric in Freemasonry and our charge to light the fire of education in every man that comes through our doors. Steve Harrison stops by for an all-new Masonic Minute about the Cable Tow and gives us a contemporary response to what it could mean for us. Lastly, we wrap it up with a Tarot card draw. On today's episode of The Brian Nichols Show, I'm joined by Steve Harrison, author of "Can't Sell Won't Sell: Advertising, politics and culture wars. Why adland has stopped selling and started saving the world": "The advertising industry has lost interest in selling. According to the IPA, we face "a crisis of effectiveness". And our politics are to blame. We're now so left-leaning, we're no longer willing to stoke capitalism's engine of growth. Instead, we've embraced a new raison d'etre: we're saving the world. But how genuine is our commitment to social justice? Who's buying our purpose-driven campaigns? And what of the angry mainstream who are alienated by the agenda we're imposing upon them? Most urgently, as businesses close and millions of families face unemployment in the post-pandemic recession, will advertising rediscover its commercial purpose and help revive the free market? Or will an out-of-touch industry double down on social purpose and drift further to the margins of British life? This is the choice we face, and it's one that adland cannot shirk."

Has the advertising industry been so busy trying to save the world, that it has lost sight of its commercial purpose?I'm kicking the year off with what many believe is one of the major problems plaguing the advertising industry, a creative effectiveness crisis. And I had the great pleasure of discussing the issue with one of my favourite advertising thought leaders, Mr Steve Harrison.Steve Harrison is a copywriter, creative director and author regarded by Campaign Magazine as the greatest Direct Marketing Creatives of his generation. He was European Creative Director at OgilvyOne and Global Creative Director at Wunderman. He started his own agency, HTW, where he won more Cannes Lions in his discipline than any creative director in the world. He is the author of highly respected books like ‘Changing the world is the only fit work for a grown man'; ‘How to write better copy'; and ‘How to do better creative work'. And his latest book ‘Can't Sell, Won't Sell: Advertising, Politics and Culture Wars' has been described by the IPA as the most provocative advertising book we've seen in years.Steve and I tackle many of the topics covered in ‘Can't Sell Won't Sell', debate what's gone wrong with advertising, the cultural and political impacts on it, and what we need to do to fix it. And he shares his refreshingly inspiring and straightforward processes, that simplify everything from defining the marketing problem, developing the proposition, writing a good brief, and answering it with a creative and 'relevant abruption'.This was one of the most enjoyable, refreshing and somewhat confronting chats I've had on the podcast. If you want to hear diverse opinions from some of the world's most innovative thinkers, then this is it. But brace yourself, Steve pulls no punches. And I absolutely love it. And I know you will too.
