Journalist, author and mental health campaigner Bryony Gordon discusses the journey to writing about her own mental health, why we need political balance, and her aversion to misery books.   Bryony has written six Sunday Times bestselling books, including the number one bestsellers Mad Girl and You Got This. Her latest book Mad Woman is the eagerly anticipated follow-up which explores a crucial question: what if our notion of what makes us happy is the very thing that's making us so sad? And her debut novel People Pleaser will be published in 2026. Her work as a mental health campaigner has been widely recognised; she founded Mental Health Mates, a peer support group that encourages people to move for their mental health, and in 2023 she was awarded the President's Medal by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. She wrote for the Telegraph for 24 years, and is now a columnist at the Daily Mail, and hosts a weekly podcast, The Life of Bryony. Bryony is also a judge for the 2025 Women's Prize for Fiction.  Bryony's  book choices are: ** The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy ** Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood ** American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld ** Standard Deviation by Katherine Heiny **  Loved and Missed by Susie Boyt Vick Hope, multi-award winning TV and BBC Radio 1 presenter, author and journalist, is the host of season eight of the Women's Prize for Fiction Podcast. Today I'm delighted to welcome back one of The Shift's very first guests, journalist and mental health campaigner Bryony Gordon. Bryony has been a columnist on the Telegraph for over 20 years and for ten of those she has been writing candidly about her own experiences of addiction and mental illness. She is the best selling author of Mad Girl and The Wrong Knickers and in 2016 she founded Mental Health Mates a global peer support network that encourages people with mental health issues to connect, for which she has won several awards. She also, FWIW, ran the London marathon in her knickers.  Three years after her first visit to The Shift, Bryony is back - older, wiser (yes really) - and with a new book, the pertinently titled, Mad Woman, which discusses her struggles with burnout, binge eating and, yep, you guessed it, fluctuating hormones. Bryony joined me from bed in south London to talk about maintaining a public facade when you're privately falling apart, finally learning to feed herself properly at 43, discovering all the women in her family went into menopause in their early 40s, why she's done with feeling like she's the problem and how Davina McCall saved her life! If you'd like to sponsor Bryony's Big Challenge, you can find out more here. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Mad Woman by Bryony Gordon and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. The Mid•Point with Gabby Logan

This episode contains strong language. This week journalist and podcaster, Bryony Gordon, speaks to Gabby about the acceptance she's found in midlife, and how experiencing early menopause made her think about what she really wants and taught her to be less of a “chaise longue!” Listen on to hear more about that... Bryony also speaks candidly about alcoholism and sobriety, as well as living with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder from a young age. She chats about using exercise as a mental health tool, as well as focusing on nourishing herself rather than punishing herself when it comes to what she eats. Bryony's new podcast The Life of Bryony and her latest book Mad Woman are both available now, and you can visit Mental Health Mates to find out more about Bryony's charity and find a walk near you. In this episode I welcome the brilliant journalist, author, founder of charity Mental Health Mates and mental health campaigner Bryony Gordon.Bryony has written a phenomenal book called "Mad Woman". It comes 10 years after her bestseller Mad Girl and explores a huge range of topics including binge eating, burnout, menopause, the pandemic and the very nature of mental illness. It is a book of self discovery and is ultimately hugely honest and leaves you feeling uplifted and with a whole new mindset about mental illness and life.During the episode Bryony is so open about many of the topics she explores in the book. She tells me about how the pandemic, a health scare, the effects of the perimenopause on her mental health and so much more have affected her and helped her become a wiser person who is finally more at peace with who she is. We also talk about fighting the patriachy, kitchen discos and what the world would be like if men experienced the menopause.Bryony has been so incredibly brave in the way that she has consistently opened up about her mental health to help others and it was such an honour to finally get to speak to her on Outspoken Beauty.

Bryony Gordon needs no introduction. A bestselling author and Telegraph journalist she has been a major player in changing the conversations we can all now have around our mental health. She's also the founder of Mental Health Mates - a charity offering peer support for those of us struggling with our mental health. By anyone's standards, she's a success and yet she battles with her confidence on a daily basis. In this episode, she allows us into the nooks and crannies of her mind as she and I unravel the root of her core belief that she's bad in some way. This is such a powerful episode, one of those coaching sessions I leave feeling overwhelming amounts of gratitude for the work I am able to do. Listen out for themes of co-dependency, addiction, intrusive thoughts and shame. If you can relate to Bryony's core belief that there's something inherently wrong with you, here's what I'd suggest: Write down the evidence you have for your core belief. All of it. Now, ask yourself how you would feel about another human being if they presented you with this evidence. Would you show them compassion? Would you be able to contextualise their behaviour? Ask yourself what life might be like for you if you dropped the belief that you are bad in some way. Next ask yourself what you are gaining by believing in your own badness. Remember, all behaviour has some kind of positive intention. Lastly, consider this statement: no one benefits from me believing that I'm bad. Now, for the next 24 hours I want you to go about your life as if you are not bad but actually a really good person. Try on this new way of thinking about yourself for a day. If you like it, try it again for another 24 hours and another until you have formed a new, healthy thought habit. I promise you, you are not bad.

There is so much to tell you about this fantastic conversation with Bryony Gordon. You will love it. I was gripped by her. She is a headlining journalist, with a column and features with notable public figures. She has written many brilliant books charting her life and in the process showing us what it is to be diagnosed with OCD, depression and addiction.  We discussed a feast of topics including: The pressure of expectations. We are expected to live happily ever after, and that in itself can set us up for failure. We looked at an alternative view of expectations during our conversation.  The irony that successful people are often troubled, and how the push to succeed often means shrinking one's true self. (I warned you we got deep!) We discussed how our childhood's shape us, but that is not the end of the story, and nor is blaming. With the right tools and attitude we really can change our response to our childhood and vitally the way we parent.  How hard it is to feel like you belong, how vital it is and how we can find our tribe in unexpected places.  The madness of trying to have control, and the peace that surrender brings in so many aspects of life, addiction being one. The idea of perseverance is powerful. You fall, you get up you go again. It is in effect the definition of resilience, and acknowledges that piece we often forget, we all fall but it's the getting up and going again that's difficult and vital.  And finally how baffling life is but we can find strength in knowing ourselves, and having the courage to turn to ourselves with kindness.  There are so many layers to this conversation and I'm sure everyone will take away something valuable from this conversation. CAUTION: Contains swearing and themes of an adult nature.Today's guest has a remarkable life story which includes addiction, mental health struggles, eating disorders, guilt, shame and so much more. Bryony Gordon is a prominent mental health campaigner, a journalist and a bestselling author. Bryony's latest book, Let Down Your Hair, is a novel about social media, mental health, self-esteem and body image. She's also recently released a Sunday Times bestseller, No Such Thing As Normal: What My Mental Illness Has Taught Me About Mental Wellness in paperback form. You may be familiar with Bryony from her Telegraph column, her many books, or her Mad World podcast. Perhaps you're one of the 206,000 people who follow her updates on Instagram. Or, maybe you know her as the Founder of peer support group Mental Health Mates. Even if you're new to Bryony and her work, you're about to get to know her pretty well, thanks to her hallmark honesty and authenticity when it comes to telling her story. We begin this conversation by talking about Bryony's experience of obsessive compulsive disorder, or OCD. This condition is often misunderstood, with people reducing it to being ‘just' about excessive tidiness or needing things in order. But Bryony shares the reality of the dark, obsessive thoughts that ruled her life from her early teens. She's unflinchingly honest about how it led her into alcoholism, drug addiction and bulimia. We also talk about her surprising relationship with marathon running, her new-found commitment to exercise for how it makes her feel, not how it makes her look and the coping mechanisms she uses to deal with the negative voices inside her head. Although she would be the first to say she's a ‘work in progress' – as all of us are – Bryony passes on some real gems of practical advice and encouragement throughout this conversation which is fun, uplifting and inspiring.Trigger Warning: This episode discusses eating disorders and may not be suitable for everyone.Support the podcast and enjoy Ad-Free episodes. Ruby grew up in Nepal and was given old sari rags to use as in place of period products, a sustainable but unhygienic alternative to tampons and pads. It was this concept, using reusable materials in place of disposables, that gave Ruby the inspiration to found WUKA.In 2019, Ruby took part in the Vitality 10K with Bryony Gordon's Mental Health Mates and Celebrate You body confidence campaign. The only requirement was that she (along with the rest of the group) had to run the race in WUKA underwear and relatively nothing else!In this episode, Ruby explains how WUKA's Perform range provides a sustainable and leakproof choice for women who run, as well as discussing what it was like to run a 10K in just her underwear! Welcome to episode 35! This week I'm chatting to Bryony Gordon. Author, columnist, podcaster, founder of Mental Health Mates, underwear marathon runner and champion of body positivity, Bryony has always been firmly on our radar. I first met Bryony just over a year ago, before our first lockdown and the world tipped off its axis. We met as part of the Celebrate You crew, a bunch of women all running the Vitality 10,000 or the London Marathon with the ambition of encouraging more women to do the same, and to feel confident and empowered by their own bodies. Since launching Mental Health Mates a few years ago, Bryony also encouraged the event directors of the Vitality 10,000 to make mental health a focus of the run too, and last year we all ran the virtual Vitality 10,000 for our heads as well as our hearts. We're about to do the same this May too – if you'd like to join us, there's plenty of time to sign up here. It costs just £19 to enter, and for that you'll get a beautiful medal and technical tee. You can run at any time in the May half term, and you'll be part of our 10K community – it would be lovely to have you with us! Holly and I are doing it too, and we'll be talking about our training in next week's podcast, so listen in for that.Bryony talks to me here about founding Mental Health Mates when she realised that that community didn't exist already, and she talks frankly about her own mental health. She also talks about running, and changing the reason why she ran – for the gains, and not for the losses. She's a joy and an inspiration. Enjoy. Please join us at the virtual Vitality London 10,000 this May half term. Bryony Gordon is a journalist, best selling author and host of her own podcast, MadWorld. She is also completely charming, hilarious and a total treat to chat to. We know you'll think so too. Like so many, for years Bryony tried to handle her mental illness on her own. She became dependant upon alcohol and drugs in an attempt to cope with OCD, bulimia and depression. In this episode, Bryony shares with us the coping mechanisms she's discovered instead that do work, how exercise is all about the gains, not the losses, and why she once took a banana for a walk down Oxford Street. True story. More exciting news for you- Bryony's latest book No Such Thing As Normal is OUT NOW! A practical guide to mental health, she strives to equip those in need of help with tools and information to get the best out of a poorly funded system that can be both frightening and overwhelming.  Here's a taste: 'Mental illness has led to some of the worst times of my life... but it has also led to some of the most brilliant. Bad things happen, but good things can come from them. And strange as it might sound, my mental health has been vastly improved by being mentally ill.' Wherever you are, and whatever you might be dealing with right now, we hope you find some solace, comfort and solidarity listening to Bryony. As she reminds us; feeling weird is actually the most normal thing in the world. This interview was recorded in the second UK lockdown, November 2020. 'Mental illness has led to some of the worst times of my life... but it has also led to some of the most brilliant. Bad things happen, but good things can come from them. And strange as it might sound, my mental health has been vastly improved by being mentally ill.' From depression and anxiety to personality disorders, one in four of us experience mental health issues every year and, in these strange and unsettling times, more of us than ever are struggling to cope. In No Such Thing As Normal, Bryony offers sensible, practical advice, covering subjects such as sleep, addiction, worry, medication, self-image, boundary setting, therapy, learned behaviour, mindfulness and, of course - as the founder of Mental Health Mates - the power of walking and talking. She also strives to equip those in need of help with tools and information to get the best out of a poorly funded system that can be both frightening and overwhelming. The result is a lively, honest and direct guide to mental health that cuts through the Instagram-wellness bubble to talk about how each of us can feel stronger, better and just a little bit less alone.

In this 31st episode of the season of the Her Spirit podcast BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin and BBC Triathlon presenter Annie Emmerson talk to journalist and mental health campaigner Bryony Gordon.Bryony’s bestselling memoirs "The Wrong Knickers: A Decade of Chaos", "You Got This", "Mad Girl", and "Eat, Drink, Run" have deservedly earned Bryony critical acclaim – and a multitude of loyal readers worldwide. Uncompromising in her truthfulness, Bryony challenges the stigma that surrounds addiction and demonstrates a determination that whatever life throws at you it is to be lived and cherished. In Bryony’s new book ‘The Glorious Rock Bottom’, she recounts the traumatic consequences of her personal addiction journey, and her experience in treatment as well as in recovery. The abundance of integrity, dignity and humanity Bryony brings to her writing invites the reader to relate to her own experiences and, in so doing, may help others to open up about their own difficulties with a view to seeking treatment and support for themselves or their loved ones. She recalls waking up drunk and drugged lying on damp grass, a man's head between her thighs. That man was not her husband - he and their daughter Edie were half a mile away sleeping in the grounds of the country estate they were staying at to celebrate her friend's birthday.Gordon was 37 and when the man, who had given her cocaine, phoned up the following week asking if she was still up for a threesome, she realised she didn’t know herself, or what she had said or done, while intoxicated that nightShe has charted the journey through alcoholism and subsequent recovery in her no-holds-barred new book, Glorious Rock Bottom. Her husband [financial journalist Harry Wilson] knows all of it. I've always been very honest with him about what happened when I was drinking. We've worked through that.As her career soared, her mental health plummeted, she continued to drink and do drugs, even though she had become an ambassador for mental health. During her regular binges she'd black out - not be able to remember the next day what she'd said or done.Had she continued drinking, she believes it would have killed her. "It doesn't bear thinking about what would have happened if I hadn't got sober," she says now. "I don't drink any more but I'm still an alcoholic.”She talks to Annie and Louise about this journey and how she felt the worst mother possible. A staunch campaigner for mental health and now feels lucky to be alive. Her ground breaking interview with Prince William raised the awareness around her mental health work. She enjoys being active and has run and how 'Running Made Me Realise That Anything Is Possible' These podcasts have been made possible through the support of Medichecks www.medichecks.com and Sport England www.sportengland.org.
