What is the danger and what do we do about it? A panel discussion with Michael Coard (@michaelcoard), attorney and columnist for Philly Tribune, host of WURD's Radio Courtroom, Chrissy Stroop (@C_Stroop), writer, scholar, ex-evangelical, co-editor of Empty the Pews: Stories of Leaving the Church, Andy Zee (host of The RNL – Revolution Nothing Less – Show; co-initiator of RefuseFascism.org; spokesperson for Revolution Books), and Coco Das (@Coco_Das, editor of RefuseFascism.org). The Situation More people voted in this election than in any other election in U.S. history, but 74 million of them voted for a fascist incumbent whose regime has advanced a vicious program of white supremacy, misogyny and theocratic patriarchy, and “America First” xenophobia. 74 million people endorsed locking children in cages, throwing immigrants in concentration camps, and backing the most vicious white supremacy, including vigilante racist and anti-Semitic murderers. A political form of Christian fundamentalism makes up the most organized solid base of this fascist movement. The 74 million include millions deeply mired in a world of lies, crazy lunatic conspiracy theories and a vicious anti-science mindset that has already killed a quarter of a million people from COVID, with the pandemic now out of control. Some Questions What accounts for this? What are its roots and how deep are they? Is it an historical aberration? Will this movement fade away with Trump out of office, or be further filled with revanchist determination? What is the danger and what do we do about it? When you ask Michael Coard what he thinks about anything, he will give you an answer - unfiltered. The longtime Philadelphia criminal defense lawyer has been talking for decades about racial issues that we now see at the forefront today: inequities in how African-Americans are treated in the judicial system, by police, in the workplace and with history. Coard joked that as fewer and fewer people see him as a "radical" maybe he needs to start acting crazier. Throughout our conversation, he gave thoughtful answers and powerful metaphors to express what it is like to be a Black man in America and why everyone needs to work together to reform our society. Not only a veteran lawyer and civil rights activist, Coard is also a journalist, a radio host and a teacher. We spoke via Zoom on July 6, 2020. In this podcast: Coard reveals what he would have told himself if he could go back to December of last year (1:25), what he thinks lit the spark among Americans to take an honest look at our country's race relations (2:00), if he was a radical before, what is he now? (2:45), why he "plays the race card" when fighting for equal rights (4:03), Coard presents a hypothetical situation that brings clarity to the struggles of African-Americans in the criminal justice system (4:25), if the "Angriest Black Man in America" is still angry (5:30), the story behind acknowledging the fact that President George Washington kept slaves at his house in Philadelphia (7:50), the poignant speech Coard gave at the opening of the President's House Memorial at Independence Mall in 2010 (11:10), why Coard is hopeful but also not naive about the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement (13:10), if a re-examining of the Founding Fathers, particularly those who owned slaves (which includes 10 of the first 12 presidents) is next (14:30), when America will be ready to move forward and put our dark history of slavery behind us (17:30), what Coard wants from Philadelphia's mayor and police commissioner over the tear-gassing of protestors on the Vine Street Expressway (18:10), how to balance police reform with protecting citizens from crime (20:00), the story of why Coard believes he became a successful man and how luck plays into our success (20:56), the commonalities he sees in the thousands of Black men accused of crimes he has represented over the years (22:14), how Coard wants to reimagine the Martin Luther King Day of Service (24:50), his response to the phrase "All Lives Matter" (27:30), where he thinks this country will be in a few years (30:05), how we can get people to listen to each other (32:10), the problem with echo chambers (36:00), why he thinks it's ridiculous when people tell protestors to stop "yelling and screaming" (37:55), what he has learned during the pandemic (39:45).

Police not Indicted, For The deaths of Unarmed Black Men, with Attorney Activist, Michael Coard Esq.! 8pm ET~ www.BlackHistoryBlog.com "I can't breathe" Weeks before the shooting death of Michael Brown this August in Ferguson, Missouri, the death of Eric Garner set off its own wave of protests. The father of six died in July while being suspected of selling illegal cigarettes in Staten Island, after a police chokehold rendered him unable to breathe. The cop, Pantaleo, who held Eric Garner in the chokehold that killed him has been sued three times for allegedly violating the constitutional rights of other blacks he and fellow cops arrested. Unlike Mike Brown's death, Garner's death has harrowing digital footprints. His attempted arrest and struggle for air were captured on a widely-disseminated video. His final words were “I can't breathe.” Besides the banned chokehold used by the cop,  throwing a beefy arm around his neck, there was lethal danger in the way Mr. Garner was subdued — on his stomach, with a pile of cops on his back. “positional asphyxia” quoted the Department's guidelines on preventing deaths in custody. The New York medical examiner's office ruled Mr. Garner's death a homicide, it cited “compression of neck (choke hold), compression of chest and prone positioning during physical restraint by police.” The pressure prevents the diaphragm from going up and down, and he can't inhale and exhale.” Which is exactly what Mr. Garner was trying to tell the officers who were on top of him when he said "I can't breathe" On Wednesday, a grand jury decided not to indict Daniel Pantaleo, the plainclothes NYPD officer who was making the arrest.

Daughter says her mother called the night of the shooting and asked how soon she might expect a check from a life insurance policy. She said her mother changed her story: "She told me that the baby was shot first, and then she told me that she was shot first." ----------------------- The documentary “The Central Park Five” revisits two New York nightmares. The first and most famous was the rape and beating of a 28-year-old white woman who, very early on April 20, 1989. The directors argue that the convictions, and the years the defendants served for the crime they were later absolved of, were racially motivated. Salaam:  "Corey said something to the audience at a recent screening.  He said “God is good.”  It's the recognition that you can put one foot in front of the other, …..but now you have more than her being victimized.
