To love your neighbor, you must know your neighbor. And to know your neighbor, you often times have to go beyond the mind you have. The Greek word for conversion, metanoia, means just that: “to go beyond the mind you have”, so that loving your neighbor usually requires some kind of conversion. Conversions are often uncomfortable and even painful. It can be hard but it can also be liberating and healing to let go of what you assumed to be true so as to accept a little more of what is actually true, especially what has been and is actually true for someone else––namely, your neighbor.A new narrative podcast series called The Ark and the Dove seeks to allow listeners to grow in knowledge of their neighbors in the Catholic Church and in the United States. The way it does that is by investigating the complex dynamics of race and religion in America through the lens of the Black Catholic Church. It holds together both broad issues of race and religion with local, particular stories of specific communities, parishes, and schools, especially within the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Our episode today focuses on The Ark and the Dove, with my guest and the podcast's co-creator, Edward Herrera. In addition to his work on The Ark and the Dove, Edward Herrera is the Executive Director of the Institute for Evangelization in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.Follow-up Resources:The Ark and the Dove podcast series“The Catholic Response to the Sin of Racism, with Gloria Purvis,” podcast episode via Church Life Today“Black Lives and the Preferential Option for the Poor” by John Cavadini, via Church Life JournalThis episode is sponsored by: Dr. Michael Dauphinais, https://catholic-theology-show.castos.com/Church Life Today is a partnership between the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame and OSV Podcasts from Our Sunday Visitor. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Dr. John Bergsma from the Franciscan University of Steubenville and Dr. Michael Dauphinais from Ave Maria University to talk about their experiences crossing paths as John, a former Protestant pastor and Bible scholar, was on his way into the Catholic Church. What a fun discussion!John and Michael will share about their encounter, their conversations, their wrestling together with theology of Mary, Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide, the Eucharist, apostolic succession, and more! It's the start of a bad joke, what happens when a Protestant Bible scholar and a Catholic Bible scholar walk into a cafeteria – but it's a wonderful story, too!To listen to Dr. Bergsma's full conversion story listen to Episode 67. Allison Sullivan cohosts what is guaranteed to be one of our best two shows of 2022 thus far! One of the bedrocks of this show is Scripture and we realized we haven't focused on it in a while so this whole episode is focused on the Bible. We kick it off with a new insight into typology of Baptism in the Old Testament that Taylor never knew about for 30+ years and that made him feel dumb. They also explain what typology is and why it's not typography like Taylor thought... Our guest this week is Dr. Michael Dauphinais. He is the head of the Theology department at Ave Maria University(where Taylor's wife went to school). He and Taylor discuss biblical answers to some typical questions about Catholicism in a way that will actually be helpful with your friends and not just make you look smart amongst other Catholics. Finally, Allison rejoins the show for the return of our Life Verse game where we randomly find a bible verse and apply it to someone's life. Hilarity ensues! Listen to Dr Michael Dauphinais discuss his new book The Wisdom of the Word by Michael Dauphinais & Matthew Levering - Why believe God exists, or believe Jesus is God? Why listen to the Catholic Church? Why is the Church so strict about sex? Questions like these have propelled a crisis of disaffiliation and disbelief among Catholics in recent decades. Half of millennial Catholics have turned their backs on the Church, and at many churches, only a minority of parishioners believe in all of its teachings about faith and morality. Building on the call of the Second Vatican Council for a greater appreciation of Scripture, The Wisdom of the Word invites Catholics who are thinking about leaving the Church, or who are confused about elements of Catholic faith and practice, to pause and give the Bible a chance to illuminate their way. From the infighting among the Catholic faithful to the sins of Catholic leaders, and from Christ's sacrifice on the cross to the Church's emphasis on caring for the poor, theologians Michael Dauphinais and Matthew Levering explore common challenges to the faith in light of the timeless insights of the Word.

Why believe in God and in Jesus Christ? Why listen to the Catholic Church? Doesn't the Church have too many rules? Why is the Church so strict about sex? How can people consider Catholicism if they don't agree with Church doctrine? I'm joined by Dr. Matthew Levering and Dr. Michael Dauphinais to discuss these questions and more as we look at their new book The Wisdom of the Word: Biblical Answers to Ten Pressing Questions About Catholicism. The Classical Theism Podcast aims to defend Catholic Christian ideas in conversation. With the help of various guests, I defend three pillars of the Catholic Christian worldview: (1) the God of classical theism exists, (2) Jesus is our Messiah and Lord, and (3) He founded the Catholic Church. We place a strong emphasis on the first pillar, defending classical theism, drawing upon the work of Thomistic philosopher Dr. Edward Feser and many others. More about that at the end of the show. Dr. Levering has written books of Biblical Natural Law, Scripture and Metaphysics, Proofs of God, and much much more. I recently sat down with him to discuss the flood narrative and how to understand severe punishment in the Old Testament. We had an amazing conversation and Dr. Levering shared some astounding insights. I hope all of you learned as much as I did during that conversation. As I hinted at before, I am doing a giveaway of two copies of Dr. Levering's book, Holy People, Holy Land: A Theological Introduction to the Bible, which he co-authored with Dr. Michael Dauphinais. This book changed the way I read Scripture and I think it's an invaluable resource to anyone interested in learning more about the Scriptures.
