How can higher education institutions expand the definition – and impact! – of entrepreneurship beyond the startup to maximize student success? What skills and relationships can students build and how can they apply them whether they start a company or a non-profit or work within a larger business as someone who know how to actually get things done, by creating, communicating, and solving problems? How can colleges and companies build mutually beneficial ecosystems make this happen? We talk through these with Antwon Foreman, the entrepreneurship professor and Founder of the social business support-u.org. Episode Highlights include: [3:04] The Social Business Model - Training students to solve real problems for major clients helps rapidly expand their resumes and campus ecosystems. [8:35] Redefining Student Success - Setting a multi-pronged goal of a job offer, graduate school acceptance, and business ownership before senior year accelerates development. [9:59] Broadening Entrepreneurial Frameworks - Shifting the entrepreneurial focus away from tech startups allows institutions to engage diverse academic majors. [16:47] Levering the Gig Economy - Modern students use digital platforms to bypass traditional career paths and protect their financial security. [23:01] Cultivating Corporate Intrapreneurs - Employers navigating an AI-driven economy require highly adaptive professionals who look at corporate roles through an ownership lens.

Matthew Levering found himself developing something resembling a Christian worldview through reading Dostoevsky and Walker Percy. This foundation led him to the Catholic Church.
Winter dormancy is the best time to shift a tree or a shrub (or plant a new one), especially when they originate from a “temperate climate” (the kind that shed their leaves and hail from UK, Europe, North America, etc). When considering shifting a sub-tropical/semi tropical one, wait a little to just before spring sets in (mid-end September). These sub-tropicals do not really like to be dumped into a wet and cold soil for many weeks of deepest winter – it could kill them! Besides, as discussed last week, with these cold and wet soils all kinds of Root Rots (Phytophthora, Armillaria, Pithium, etc) might terminally affect your trees. Here are some ideas to make it work as well as possible: 1) Consider the size of the tree – smaller ones are much easier to (trans)plant than big ones. 2) Get a “trenching spade”. These long, narrow, sturdy blades are much more efficient at digging into cold, wet clay soils than the ordinary, wider spades. 3) Destination site – select the site where the tree has to go and dig a rather huge hole – you can't really dig big enough, as no matter what the root ball will be, a lot of extra drainage is always going to be beneficial. Drainage away from the root ball to be planted helps to avoid Root Rots. Mix in some pumice or compost in the loose soil material, so that it will become friable and nutritious with organic material; the tree will appreciate this new site as it has plenty of drainage and food. 4) Original site: with the trenching spade dig a circular shape around the tree's root-zone – remember that the wider you go, the heavier the root ball will be, you might need a bit of neighbourly help to lift the bugger out! Approx. 30 to 40 cm radius from the tree's stem is pretty good Try to get as many roots across as possible as the tree will re-establish better. 5) Levering with the trenching spade, remove the tree and its root ball out of its original site and transport it on a wheelbarrow to the destination site. If the soil starts to fall off the roots, use a hessian sack to wrap it all up before moving. 6) Plant the tree at destination site as soon as possible to prevent drying out. The level of the tree's soil should be the same at the new site – don't plant it deeper than it was before! In the unlikely event of destination site being too dry, fill the planting hole with water before the shift. 7) Stake the new tree to anchor it. Provide it with a bit of wind-shelter (windbreak) for the first year or so, firm the soil around the roots. Top-dress in spring with some slow-release fertilizer. If you've lost a lot of roots in the shift, prune the tops of the tree to restore the root/foliage balance. 8) I prefer to add some 3-4 inches of mulch over the root zone to keep moisture in and keep roots cool in summer. Keep the mulch away from the stem of the tree to avoid collar rots. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this special episode of the Govcon Giants Podcast, we have Tony Reaves II, who shares his incredible success story after attending last year's GovCon conference. Tony discusses how a conversation at the event led him to think about adding a “plus one” to his business, which deals in tires, and how that insight resulted in winning a $238,000 contract. By networking and leveraging connections made at the conference, Tony expanded his offerings to include tire recycling and run flats, which helped him stand out in the competitive government contracting space. Tony emphasizes the importance of networking and attending events like the GovCon conference, explaining how one connection and a new idea helped him multiply his investment in the conference by 50 times. He also shares advice for future attendees, encouraging them to come prepared with clear goals, be subject matter experts in their field, and take advantage of networking opportunities. His experience showcases how a single conversation at a conference can lead to substantial business growth and success in government contracting. Register to the summit here: https://gcgsummit.com/

Brewers 360 with Jeff Levering live from The Falls! We also look towards the end of the season, only 3 more road trips left in the regular season which is a good thing as Levering points out, because the Brewers win a lot at home

So let's talk about levering the power of public health... How important are civic engagement and politics in elevating the power and practice of public health? It's still sad how it took us a pandemic for people to recognize that we really should be thinking about the importance of public health. That COVID-19 pandemic—that is what happens when we don't have a great structure, especially on a national level. We should be taking action hand-in-hand, for as today's guest said, public health is ingrained in all that we do in life. Unfortunately, here we are, forgetting its importance as soon as things got “well” with us. But we don't want that to go on, that's why I invited Leela Ramachandran. She is a Research Associate for the Public Health Institute of Western Massachusetts and an Elected School Committee Member at Acton Boxborough Regional School District. Through experiences in research and projects, she realized her passion for dismantling systems of oppression, centering historically marginalized populations, and decolonizing the field of public health. Join us as we learn how we can take part in this initiative and hopefully create a better version of both the world and ourselves. Why you need to check this episode: Recognize how important the role of civic engagement and politics are in relation to public health; Understand the power of your network/s in helping activate people's eagerness to take action for a better world; and Gain insights from Leela's experiences and tips on how you can take part in putting the power of public health & advocacy into mainstream “It's important to find the ways that you can contribute. There are plenty of ways to do things; you just have to want to do it and find the thing that works for you.”– Leela Ramachandran Notable Quotes: “I don't think I'd be the physician that I am today without my public health degree.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “All this is public health, and that's why I love public health so much. It's so ingrained in every profession; everything that we do in our lives is somehow related to public health… I just think public health is one of the most important things that you could do. And it's not just like a job; for me, it's perspective.” – Leela Ramachandran “We're important when we matter when it's a national crisis—international, actually—and then all of a sudden, it's kind of forgotten about even though the public health duties do not end.” – Leela Ramachandran “In this beautiful, capitalist country that we live in, money talks and money does things, and money allows you and affords you the opportunity to implement really good public health programs; lack thereof can be detrimental. And so, oftentimes, public health depends on policy, funding, our work.” – Leela Ramachandran “I am not the world's best expert at international policies and politics, but other people are… I think it's just doing what you can in circles of influence. I can't get the whole town to care, but if I can get five of my friends to care like each one teaches one, then they can go get their friends to come on. It's really about who's in your network, who can you pull into this, and who they're affecting.” – Leela Ramachandran “In a world that really overwhelms you, you have to pick something and just go for it. And if not's working, that's fine; it doesn't have to be perfect on the first run.” – Leela Ramachandran Sign up at www.listentodrberry.com to join the mailing list.
