I welcome back Sr Josephine Garrett, author of the book “Hope: An Invitation” by OSV Books. Sister Josephine shares her journey of faith, the challenges she faced, her experiences of prayer, and the moments of surrender she had to make in her life. By drawing upon her personal experience, she sheds light onto the power of hope, and how it serves as an 'anchor' guiding us through difficulties. We discuss the importance of deciding and committing, and the idea that hardships and darkness can be an invitation to a deeper relationship with God. We also share about the dangers of cynicism and warn against endless exploration of the past. We end the show by praying the Litany of Waiting. This episode is an exploration of faith, hope, love, and the role of waiting in one's spiritual journey. Have thoughts about this episode? Join the conversation on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn. This episode starts at the end of the story of the Pilgrims at Plymouth by looking at the famous "Mayflower Compact," and how Americans have spoken and written about it for more than 200 years. Was it a "document that ranks with the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution as a seminal American text," or merely an expediency for heading off the possibility of mutiny? Everybody from John Adams to historians writing today - and now the History of the Americans Podcast! - have debated that first grassroots American social contract. For this special Independence Day bonus episode, Kevin goes solo to talk about what America means and how Christians should relate to our nation. The most contentious debates that we currently have are about history, and we can't agree on which story to tell about America. Kevin examines two books that approach this problem of America's story differently. Are they incompatible? Which way do you take? Life and Books and Everything is sponsored by Crossway, publisher of The Supremacy of God in Preaching Revised and Expanded Edition by John Piper. John Piper pleads for preachers to make the supremacy of God the bracing air of their sermons. He longs to see a new generation of preachers, and a revived band of seasoned brothers, set aflame with the grandeur of God—his glory as the goal of preaching, his cross as the ground of preaching, his Spirit as the power of preaching. It is fitting that The Supremacy of God in Preaching now appears in hardcover for the first time. It has proven to be an enduring work through the decades. In today’s episode, we look at the value of studying history as a subject in and of itself. Today, many people criticize history as an academic enterprise on several fronts: one, whether or not history is useful to study at all and two, if we study history, we tend to focus on certain monumental figures to the neglect of other important, meaningful voices within the historical narrative. To that end, what people, places, and voices in history should we focus on in studying history? What are the principles upon which we should study history? What is the goal of studying history, and how might the study of history contribute to positive character development and human flourishing? In this episode, we examine these questions and solicit answers from a wide array of opinions from teachers and educators on the content, purpose, and value of studying history, including Wilfred McClay, an intellectual historian at Hillsdale College, Leah Klein, the Chair of the History Department at Thales Apex, Clifford Humphrey, Director of Admissions at Thales College, Terry Stoops, Director for the Center for Effective Education at the John Locke Foundation, and Bob Luddy, the founder of Thales Academy. Attention high school teachers of American history! Listen up, homeschooling parents of adolescents. General readers in need of a comprehensive history of the United States, have I got the book for you. Land of Hope: An Invitation to the Great American Story by Wilfred M. McClay is a beautifully organized, approachable, moving chronicle of the American nation from just before the Age of Exploration all the way down to the advent of the Trump administration. It is reader-friendly without being at all dumbed down. This nonideological, brisk narrative is winning plaudits from both the left and the right for its adherence to the facts and its fairmindedness. It’s a darned good read. Land of Hope is an entertaining but substantive primer on the basic events and developments in American history. In a time of furor and rancor over the origins of the nation, this is the book we all need. From the religious events in Europe that led to the settlement of the vast American continent to engaging explanations of the British blunders that led to the American Revolution to the antebellum political scene and the political and military repercussions of clashes such as the Battle of Antietam and the tragedy of Reconstruction—that’s all here. So are key moments and milestones such as the Progressive Era, the New Deal, the Cold War and the Civil Rights Movement. The book introduces the young to what is ancient history for them—the Nixon and Reagan administrations, say. The book is jam-packed with every sort of history at play in its lively pages: military, social, cultural and literary, technological and so on. An especially illuminating aspect of the book for everyone in every corner of the country is the way it presents the growth of the United States as a geographical entity and examines how the landscape shaped the nation and the many regional identities within it and when and how we became a union, state by state. The maps alone are worth the price of the book. We are in the hands of a master historian. Take up his invitation by all means. You’ll be glad you did.
