In this conversation with Jennifer ('Niffy') Thomas and Dr. Michael Stanley, we talk about how Niffy became an artist after undergoing DBS surgery to treat her early onset Parkinson's Disease. Dr. Michael Stanley is a cognitive neurologist at the Brigham & Women's Hospital and has special interest in art and the brain: He studies how lesions or other neurological conditions can lead to cessation of artistic behavior or how they can change the artistic style of artists. When he read about Niffy's case, he reached out to her and the two had multiple conversations about it. In preparation to this conversation, we were in contact with Dr. Paul Krack (Bern) who has studied and published upon similar cases in which DBS surgery changed or initiated artistic behavior. There is so much we can learn from Niffy and I am very grateful for her taking the time to share her story: Indeed, in her youth, Niffy did not enjoy art class at school and never had a particular interest in painting. She expressed herself differently: Via athletic competition or by playing the piano. But after coming home from DBS surgery in 2019, all of a sudden, there was this imminent urge – to paint...
Today I sit down for an in-depth conversation with my good friend, Michael Stanley-Baker, a scholar of Chinese religion and medicine. We talk about Mike's international childhood and how his family history influenced his intellectual life, his training as a Chinese medical practitioner, and his book co-edited with Vivienne Lo, the Routledge Handbook of Chinese Medicine (Routledge, 2022), which is groundbreaking... and open access! We also talk about Mike's new book with Manchester University Press, Situating Religion and Medicine in Asia, which opens up a critical conversation about how we understand Asian medicine. Then, we look ahead to Mike's digital humanities project, called Polyglot Asian Medicines. Along the way we talk rabbit-ducks and how fish know that they're underwater. Joe Kleon is a veteran of the Cleveland music scene who has worked in a lot of different capacities, including a lengthy career in radio. More recently, he's developed an interesting career in concert photography that's now approaching the 20 year mark. Matt's path with Joe first crossed in the '90s when the two got together to discuss Rush and play through some vintage concert bootlegs from the Canadian rock legends -- which inevitably led into a lot of other musical discussion beyond that. In the years that have passed since then, it seems like we're often heading in two different directions when we're out and about. As Joe's heading for the front of the stage to get ready to take photographs, Matt is looking for his seat to settle in for that night's show.It was fun to get a chance to talk a bit of shop with Joe, who is back with his fifth annual fundraiser for Kitten Krazy, Inc. We dig into his history and how he got into photography. He also shares stories from his 20+ year friendship with Michael Stanley, plus additional music biz war stories ranging from the Jonas Brothers and the Scorpions and everything in between! Here's a documentary about the unique photo studio that we discussed during the episode, which Joe uses for his Kitten Krazy photos -- complete with an extensive gallery of photos at the end of the doc!Information regarding the Kitten Krazy fundraiser and related events follows. David Spero was one of the pioneering DJs of the then new FM format in radio, a free form limited only by the DJ's imagination. He left radio in 1973 to become the manager for Michael Stanley and would eventually go on to manage the biggest names in rock including Joe Walsh, Cat Stevens, Dickey Betts, Jesse Colin Young, Kenny Loggins, Richie Furay, Simon Kirke and Paul Rodgers of Bad Co., and many others. He's friends to as many famous rockers including Jackson Browne, Mark Farner, Al Kooper, and Harry Nilsson.David is on the podcast to talk about his book A Life in The Wings: My Sixty Year Love Affair with Rock and Roll: A Memoir. You know by now that we absolutely loved Benjamin Stevenson's phenomenal 2022 metafictional mystery, 'Everyone in my Family has Killed Someone'. Ben was out on tour while we were covering the book, but now that he's back, we sat down to talk about all the juicy details of the book's creation. Be warned, this conversation features full, unrestrained spoilers after the first two questions. Hear about the reasons he included many of the more harrowing and sincere moments of the story, the things that inspired the book, and how Ben views the novel's place in the genre. We also have a chat about the reception of the novel and the early shape of the recently-announced sequel 'Everyone on this Train is a Suspect'. Importantly, our lawyers told us to insist that the baseball bats Ben mentions were purely cosmetic. Also on the podcast - be sure to check out our main discussions on the novel, featuring Nikki Mottram, Michael Stanley, and 2ser's own Roderick Chambers. Thank you to Penguin Australia for providing copies of 'Everyone in my Family has Killed Someone'.
We talk with Michael Stanley (AKA Michael Sears and Stanley Trollip) about their latest Detective Kubu novel, 'A Deadly Covenant'. The second prequel telling of Kubu's early career in the Botswana Criminal Investigations Department, we follow Detective Kubu to Shakawe, Botswana on a case investigating a mass grave of first nations Africans hoed up amidst preparations for a new water line through the Kalahari desert. His long-tenured friends and mentors are new acquaintances, and his later-wife is only a growing flirtation. The town's history begs to be unearthed as modern murders point to needed justice for past misdeeds. Thank you to Michael Stanley for copies of 'A Deadly Covenant'.
We discuss chapters 33-41 of Benjamin Stevenson's phenomenal 2022 metafictional mystery, 'Everyone in my Family has Killed Someone'. What would a murder mystery be without a bizarre detour right before the explanation. A jaunt with heavy machinery over to a party at another nearby lodge introduces us to a distraught couple it seems were being blackmailed by one of the Cunninghams, but why? Ern has to piece together the scraps of this mystery on his feet as Chekov's innumerable guns all collide in a scorching finale. We're also joined by Michael Sears and Stanley Trollip, the minds behind Michael Stanley and their latest novel 'A Deadly Covenant', to talk about the second prequel in the adventures of their Detective Kubu, and the tumultuous boundaries between cultures that inspired it. Thank you to Penguin Australia for providing copies of 'Everyone in my Family has Killed Someone', and to Michael Stanley for copies of 'A Deadly Covenant'.
Lauren Enright is the Founder of Axiom Climate, and Michael Stanley Gallisdorfer is a Water Sustainability Strategist you've already heard on that microphone by the excellent Episode 17 of Season 2. Together with Indrani Pal, Lauren and Michael will lead a Session Day at the upcoming American Geophysical Union Meeting in Chicago titled "Adapting to Climate Change: Innovative Solutions for Building Water Resilience to Long-term Meteorological & Hydrological Change." If you've followed the series of COP Conferences that aim to take on Climate Change challenges, you've probably noticed a difference between the latest COP 27 and the previous 26. So far, we mostly talked about climate change mitigation - and hence, it was much of a carbon topic. COP 27 happened to be different: for the first time, the focus was on climate change adaptation. And in that new realm, much of the focus is switching to water. Why so? Well, because climate change is increasing variability in the water cycle, thus causing extreme weather events, lowering the predictability of water availability, decreasing water quality, and threatening sustainable development, biodiversity, or simply the enjoyment of the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation worldwide - for the ones that are blessed with it. Those would be just some of the consequences, but in a nutshell, we can say: climate change will be felt through water. So what do we do about it? That's where climate change adaptation kicks in. We don't have to reinvent the wheel; we just - between quotation marks - have to implement existing technology and fast-track the path to market for the right innovations. It's not because we start deploying climate change adaptation that we accept our fate and stop with the mitigation efforts; both can and should work hand in hand. But if we accept that, by now, a good chunk of the effects of climate change can't be reversed for a long time, we better leverage our water knowledge to limit how much it will affect populations across the globe. That is Lauren, Michael, and Indrani's proposal to the World: kickstarting actionable innovative solutions for the World to start adapting and protecting every crew member of spaceship earth. If you like what you hear today, you'll probably enjoy their session at the American Geophysical Union Meeting in Chicago as they schedule an entire day on Friday to light the climate change adaptation topic with fresh angles and new approaches. Just the memories and a microphone. No safety-net. Nothing to fall back on. Just like that decision to finally ask for help, sometimes the realization that the time has come and it is now can only be arrived at by oneself. In this explosive, gripping episode, Marc rides solo. He recounts his story, where he migrated from the successful corporate-executive lifestyle to the alcoholic and addict who had no other recourse but to mutter those three critical words: please help me. "My durability had worn through." Follow Marc's captivating journey, from sought-after L.A. session-guitarist to high-earning corporate sales leader to cherished friend and musical colleague for Michael Stanley and The Resonators. Throughout these different chapters, Marc reflects on the role that drugs and alcohol played, how they dominated his life, how his addiction nearly toppled everything, and how one important event finally provided the impetus to stop the madness. This is a spellbinding episode with no details spared, and it's a riveting reminder that, as Marc says, "When you get out of the way, the right stuff comes through.”

This program's "You Break It, You Bought It" policy is not limited to copies of the late Michael Stanley's album of the same name, though handling with care is recommended all the same. There's a reason the sign on the door reads, "lovely to look at, delightful to hold, if you should break it, FUCK YOU, IT'S SOLD". Simply put, most of you are as rude as you are clumsy and I've had enough trying to glue together merchandise damaged by America's dumbest customers. It's going to be a minor inconvenience having to handcuff each individual who wishes to listen to this show, but on the bright side, at least there aren't very many of you.
