He was on a MAJOR upswing career-wise a decade ago before the dreaded cancer reared its ugly head. Oscar-Winning Writer/Director Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Almost Famous, Fast Times at Ridgemont High) talks with Says Who Sports about a celebrated career that was launched when he became the youngest writer ever for Rolling Stone as a teenager and traveled with the biggest rock bands in the world, including the Allman Brothers Band and Led Zeppelin, wrote the best-selling novel Fast Times at Ridgemont High and later wrote the screenplay for the movie, wrote and directed such films as Say Anything, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, won a Grammy Award, was nominated for a Tony Award, directed acclaimed music documentaries about Pearl Jam and David Crosby, created the Showtime series Roadies, and much more! Crowe's directorial debut as a teenager, the long-lost and newly released Heartbreakers Beach Party, about the legendary Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and the hijinks and high-energy surrounding the making of their third album, Long After Dark, was banned by MTV after one airing in the summer of 1983 due to what the network generally described as inappropriate reckless content. Crowe and producing partner Greg Mariotti, along with Petty's daughter, Adria, have now brought the film to theaters and streaming in all its early Petty-era glory. Crowe shares special stories and anecdotes about the making of the movie, including Petty's self-professed connection to Jeff Spicoli, Crowe's iconic lovable stoner character played by Sean Penn in Fast Times. Crowe also shares memories from his time on the road with the Allman Brothers Band in the early Seventies and recalls the magic of what it felt like to be standing onstage watching the band play four hour shows, and his gratitude for guitarist Dickey Betts for trusting him and opening the "band access" door to Crowe.    Crowe, who is working on a film with/about legendary singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell, shares nuggets about his friendship with Mitchell, including the profound impact her music had on a young Crowe growing up in a household where rock music was essentially off-limits, and the wisdom he has gained from Mitchell via their conversations. Crowe discusses the making of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, including battles with the studio to release the film and the unexpected and mind-blowing crowd reaction to the movie in a theater on Opening Weekend. Crowe pays much respect to director Amy Heckerling, who championed Fast Times and led the way for directors including an up-and-coming John Hughes in the making of teen films in that era. Crowe also talks about Penn's immense impact on the film, including witnessing Penn's supreme confidence and skill as a young actor and his unique approach to playing the role of Spicoli. Crowe shares special memories of the making of Jerry Maguire, including humorous moments on the set with sports agent mentor Leigh Steinberg, his respect for and friendship with former NFL quarterback Drew Bledsoe, who inspired Crowe in his creation of the fictional character that played the quarterback and prospective top NFL draft pick in the movie, and the awe-inspiring skills of actor Tom Cruise, who played the title character and whom Crowe describes as committed in the strongest way to understanding and respecting the roles of all members of the movie-making team and to helping Crowe realize his vision for the film. Crowe also discusses much about Almost Famous, including the influence on the movie of those nights he spent as a teenager watching from the stage as the Allman Brothers Band played marathon shows.

ALLMAN BROTHERS' Sons: Devon and Duane Betts Lead Southern Rock

A Breath of Fresh Air

The Allman Brothers Band, established in 1969 in Georgia, stands as a cornerstone of Southern rock and American music history. Founded by brothers Duane and Gregg Allman, along with Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, Berry Oakley, and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson, the band was instrumental in blending rock, blues, jazz, and country music into a genre-defining sound. Their innovative use of dual lead guitars and extended improvisational jams set them apart, creating a live experience that was both powerful and deeply emotional. Tragically, Duane Allman's death in a motorcycle accident in 1971 was a devastating blow, but the band soldiered on, with guitarist Dickey Betts stepping up as a leading creative force. The subsequent album, Eat a Peach (1972), featured both live and studio tracks. Throughout the 70s, the Allman Brothers Band produced a series of critically acclaimed albums, intertwining guitar lines earned them a massive following. However, the late 70s brought internal tensions, substance abuse issues, and the death of bassist Berry Oakley, leading to several breakups and reunions. The band experienced a resurgence in the late 80s and 90s and officially disbanded in 2014. During this time Gregg Allman shared a complex and evolving relationship with his son, Devon. Born in 1972 Devon grew up largely separated from his famous father due to Gregg's demanding career and his battle with substance abuse. Despite this distance, Devon was profoundly influenced by his father's music and the legacy of the Allman Brothers Band. As Devon grew, he pursued his own path in music, forming the band Honeytribe and later joining the Royal Southern Brotherhood. Despite their time apart, music became a bridge between father and son. Gregg and Devon reconnected and shared the stage at various times. Following Gregg's death in 2017, Devon continued to carry the torch of Southern rock through The Allman Betts Band, a group he formed with Duane Betts, son of Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. The Allman Betts Band re-captures the spirit of the Allman Brothers and the chemistry between Devon and Duane is palpable. Their collaboration is not just a continuation of their family legacies but a creative partnership that has revitalised the Southern rock genre for the modern era. As the echo of guitar strings fades into memory, we sit down with the esteemed Andy Aledort, whose fingers have danced along fretboards in harmony with the legendary Dickey Betts. Our conversation takes you on a backstage tour of those hazy, adrenaline-fueled days and the poignant reflections on an era that shaped the very fabric of rock music. Andy's tales of camaraderie and the birth of his latest record spin a yarn of passion and perseverance, revealing the untold stories of life on the road and the creative fires that forge timeless music.Strapping on a guitar is more than just playing notes; it's about infusing every chord with soulful authenticity, a lesson that Betts himself exemplified. Andy and Greg unravel this philosophy, musing on the magical alchemy of band dynamics and the unspoken language of music that resonates with the audience. The conversation resonates with the love musicians pour into their craft, akin to a chef's devotion to their cuisine, crafting a feast for the senses that lingers long after the last note has been played.Gearheads, rejoice! Andy and Greg then venture into the hallowed realm of guitar gear and tone techniques, dissecting the sonic signatures that have become the hallmark of guitar greats. From the technical prowess of Hendrix to the soul-stirring slide of Duane Allman. Lace up your listening boots and prepare for a journey through the strings and stories that continue to echo through the halls of rock history.

This year's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees are in and we see how we did with our picks from Episode #236.Jay regales us in a recap of the Martin Guitar factory tour he experienced last week in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. The custom order tour, made possible friend of the show, Keith Grasso, and two Island Music customers, includes the standard tour plus a look in Martin's selections of rare woods that it keeps under lock and key. Long story short, Jay was sold on the quality and is currently working out the budget for a D-28.Song: Richard Thompson - “Freeze”Next up it's a special TayTay edition of “News with Nick.” Following the spectacular failure of TayTay's Eras Tour ticket sale, Ticketmaster parent company Live Nation is about to be sued by the justice department for antitrust concerns. Then it's on to the New York Times, in an article titled “Taylor Swift Has Given Fans a Lot. Is It Finally Too Much?” Jay actually gave the album a listen and has some thoughts, Nick tried but bailed for the new Ghost Note album. Greg doesn't want anything to do with it.Song: Ghost Note - “JB's Out! (Do it Babay)”Greg brings us a remembrance of Allman Brothers co-founder, Dickey Betts, who died last week at the age of 80. Along with writing some of the bands larger hits, Betts forever changed how we think two rock guitars should sound together. He was a massively influential guitarist and his legacy lives on in the generations of music that his playing inspired.Songs:The Allman Brothers - "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed"The Allman Brothers - “Ramblin' Man”

Mary Zahl was recently the guest on an episode of a podcast known as "The Brothers Zahl" (out this summer). The subject of the cast was parenting, and I can think of no better illustration of a good parent. Mary listed three core themes of enduring motherhood/fatherhood that feel utterly right to me. They are (1) complete dependability when your child is little; (2) no control or pressure when your child is growing -- let them or her pursue their own interests; and (3) try to detach from your grown child's life most of the time, tho' not always. Sometimes -- if very occasionally -- you may have to intervene. I was awed by my wife's reflections, the mother of our three grown sons. I also couldn't help theologizing a little, for each of her three themes has a direct relation to the Christian Gospel. (1) mirrors the One-Way Love of God's Grace. (2) suggests the continuing solution of Grace to the problem of Law. (3) connects the "Eastern"-sounding insight of non-attachment with the Christian fact of God's Incarnation -- God's personal intervention in this septic world. This cast is also a sort of pre-op moment for the Mockingbird Conference, which begins this Thursday in Manhattan. Do join us if you can. Mary and I will be there, and hundreds of others, too. I'll speak about parenting, tho' Mary (by my side) is the best authority on that front. This cast is dedicated to Larry Brudi and Bob Smith, and reverentially, to Dickey Betts.

The Outlaws had a long history as a band prior to the release of this debut album.  Formed originally in 1967 in Tampa, Florida, the original name for the group was "The Four Letter Words."  They toured off and on through the early 70's, and made an aborted attempt at an album the late 60's.  Finally, they were signed by Clive Davis and Arista Records while opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd.  Ronnie Van Zant told Davis and future Outlaws manager Charlie Brusco, "If you don't sign Outlaws, you're the dumbest music person I've ever met - and I know you're not."The debut and eponymously named album Outlaws would blend Southern rock with Country and hard rock, and would create a great concert draw for the band.  Their use of three guitars would come to be known as "the Florida Guitar Army."  Hughie Thomasson and Billy Jones both provided lead guitar and vocals, and Henry Paul would provide further electric and acoustic guitar as well as vocals.  Monte Yoho on drums and Frank O'Keefe on bass would round out the group. While there's definitely a Southern Rock feel to the Outlaws, there is also a lot of Country and even bluegrass mixed in.  The technical chops are impressive, and there is a lot of harmony employed in the group as well.  The album would peak at number 13 on the Billboard Top LP's & Tape chart.Wayne takes us through this guitar-driven Southern Rock album for this week's podcast. WaterholeThis instrumental song leads off side two of the album, and has a bluegrass feel.   It is the opening track to side two of the album. There Goes Another Love SongThe hit single on the album also is the leading track.  It peaked at number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100, and features Hughie Thomasson on lead vocals.  The lyrics depict a guy on the road who is missing his faraway love, and seems to encounter love songs one after another.Song for YouThis may appear to be an instrumental at first because of the long intro before the vocals come in.  The lyrics reflect a guy who is breaking a girl's heart, but can't seem to avoid doing so.  There are some great harmonies in this track.Green Grass and High TidesThe last song on the album is a true epic.  The album version is almost 10 minutes long, but has been stretched to 30-minute versions in concert jams.  Hughie Thomasson conceived the album while at a beach cookout and imagining all the rock greats who had passed on rising from the grave to play a show.  The name comes from a Rolling Stones' "Best of" album title.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the motion picture “The Apple Dumpling Gang”Walt Disney Productions put out this comedy western about a gambler tricked into taking care of a group of orphans.  Bill Bixby, Don Knotts, and Tim Conway star in this movie.  STAFF PICKS:One of These Nights by the EaglesLynch starts off the staff picks with a song penned by the duo of Glenn Frey and Don Henley.  It became the second number 1 single for the group in the US, behind "Best of My Love."  This track takes inspiration from soul music like Al Green and B.B. King, and has been described as an anthem for procrastinators and dreamers.  Blue Sky by Joan BaezRob profiles a cover song originally performed by the Allman Brothers on their 1972 album, "Eat a Peach."  Originally written by Dickey Betts about his girlfriend Sandy "Bluesky" Wabegijig, Baez covers this on her 1975 album "Diamonds & Rust."  If it sounds familiar to you, Baez is actually backed up by the Allman Brothers Band for this single.Landslide by Fleetwood MacBruce features a song written by Stevie Nicks at a time when she was considering whether to continue to pursue life as a musician or give up her dream and go back to school.  Despite its popularity today, the song was not originally released as a single until the live version from "The Dance" in 1997.Motorhead by HawkwindWayne closes out the staff picks  with a B-side from the prog rock group Hawkwind written by bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister while he was with the group.  Lemmy was fired from the band one day before the album's release, but would go on to fame in the band Motorhead. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Journey of the Sorcerer by the EaglesA rare instrumental from the Eagles takes us out this week. He delves into Brent Midland's impact on the band and his musical contributions. He also touches on recent concerts by Phish and the Sam Grisman Project.Later, there's a surprising revelation that Tucker Carlson is a Grateful Dead fan, and it reflects on the diverse fanbase of the band. Larry also mourns the passing of Dicky Betts, a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, highlighting his musical legacy and contributions to Southern Rock. In the case of “Passenger,” the added quirk is thrown in of someone other than the composer singing the song. So we have a song written by Peter Monk, with music by Phil Lesh, and sung by Bob Weir and Donna Jean Godcheaux on Terrapin Station.Lesh wrote the song, admittedly based on Fleetwood Mac's riff for their song “Station Man.” Lesh said, in an interview in Dupree's Diamond News, “What's weird about that song is I sort of did it as a joke. It's a take on a Fleetwood Mac tune called ‘Station Man.' I just sort of sped it up and put some different chord changes in there..."Monk's lyrics for the song have been the source of quite a bit of debate. There are quite a few alternate hearings, especially around the line: “Terrible, the only game in town,” which many, including myself, hear as “Parable, the only game in town.”“Passenger” was first performed on May 15, 1977, at the St. Louis Arena in St. Louis (released on the May 1977 box set). It was performed regularly through1981, with its final performance on December 27, 1981, at the Oakland Auditorium.Terrapin Station, which included the studio version of the song, was released on July 27, 1977. “Passenger” was released as a single, with “Terrapin Station” on the B side.Great tune.  I'm sorry I never got to hear it live.Bootleg album:  Live at Moe's Place – open with it, used to listen to it at good friends' Dinie and Janet's place in Ann Arbor.  Really jams.                 Played 99 times                First:  May 15, 1977 at St. Louis Arena, St. Louis, MO, USA            Last:  December 27, 1981 at Oakland Civic Auditorium, Oakland, CA  MJ News SHOW No. 4:                    Shakedown Street                                                Track #24                                                5:00 – 6:41                 Brent with music fills and vocals  ENCORE:                          Blue Sky                                                Eat A Peach                                                Blue Sky (youtube.com)                                                3:00 – end College acquaintance and fellow Deadhead used to say that whenever she listened to this album, she would play Blue Sky twice and THEN play the album all the way through picking up a third Blue Sky.  I tried it and discovered she was right on about that. .Produced by PodConx Deadhead Cannabis Show - https://podconx.com/podcasts/deadhead-cannabis-showLarry Mishkin - https://podconx.com/guests/larry-mishkinRob Hunt - https://podconx.com/guests/rob-huntJay Blakesberg - https://podconx.com/guests/jay-blakesbergSound Designed by Jamie Humiston - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamie-humiston-91718b1b3/Recorded on Squadcast
