WE'RE BACK!! Our first episode in two years is finally with you – and it's a cracker. Join Scott as he tells the story of the making of the movie Zulu. RAINBOW VALLEY – THE MAKING OF ZULU Rainbow Valley is a monthly podcast where your host, Scott takes a look at key events and personalities that shaped one the most influential, vibrant, tumultuous and swinging decades in history. Join us as we celebrate the 1960's with the stories surrounding the music and news events of the decade that shook the world. 22nd January 1879, Rorkes Drift, Natal, South Africa. A remote mission station, the setting for one of the most famous, battles in British history. But until 1964 and the release of the movie Zulu, the story of the events of those ten hours were not particularly familiar to the British public. In reality, 100 British soldiers defended a series of attacks by approximately 4000 Zulu warriors. By the end of the battle, which lasted from late afternoon until dawn the following morning, 15 soldiers were dead, two mortally wounded and surrounding them, the bodies of some 350 Zulus Possibly one of the most celebrated and documented battles in British history you might think. But you would be wrong, for if it were not for the release of the movie 85 years later, it's likely it would have remained a mere postscript in the annals of military conflict. The story of the making of Zulu begins with a magazine article written in 1958 and takes us on a journey that will change the lives of many people along the way. People such as director, Cy Endfield, producer and actor Stanley Baker, Zulu tribal leader, Chief Buthelezi and a certain young actor from south London called Michael Caine. A movie that remained on cinema screens almost constantly for 12 years before becoming one of the most regarded and best loved British movies of all time, the story of its creation is almost worthy of a movie in its own right. Ladies and gentlemen, Rainbow Valley is proud to present the story of the making of Zulu.   You can find all our previous episodes everywhere you download your podcasts. It looks like Randy finally decided to pick for us a good, old-fashioned, big-budget, mid-century, historical war epic.  Michael Caine plays Peter O’Toole playing David Bowie as Michael Caine in the Role of Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead alongside Stanley Baker as Lieutenant John Chard: both men of hesitant bravery competing with one another for the command of a small regiment of British soldiers defending against a massive Zulu army in 1870s Natal.  As you might imagine, there’s quite a lot to unpack here. Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British movies ...with just a hint of professionalism. Episode 064 – Violent Playground (1958) Another in our series of movies that influenced the British New Wave Cinema movement. Another fine example of the ‘social problem’ movie directed by the master himself, Basil Dearden. Highlighting the dangerous world of the newly-born ‘teenagers’, we present Violent Playground from 1958 starring Stanley Baker, David McCallum and Peter Cushing. Sgt. Truman (Stanley Baker), a policeman who deals with juvenile delinquents, visits the Murphy household after a theft by the young twins, Mary and Patrick. There he meets their older sister, Cathie (Anne Heywood), and soon begins a romantic involvement with her. However, Cathie's brother, Johnnie (David McCallum), is the leader of an infamous local gang, and doesn't like to see his sister with a cop. Gradually, Truman starts to see a link between Johnnie and a string of local arsons. “Every city has its dangerous youth. Stark, explosive drama – as the camera lays bare the heart of a big city and probe the secrets of its violent youth”   You can find this and all of our previous episodes at: Apple Podcasts Libsyn Player FM Podtail Owltail ListenNotes Follow us on Twitter @rbritanniapod Join us over at our Facebook Group ….we’d love to chat with you email: reelbritannia@gmail.com Thanks for listening Scott and Steven

"Para sentirse mal hay que estar vivo". Teniente Chard. Zulu is a 1964 war movie staring Stanley Baker and Micheal Caine. The film deplicts the Battle of Rourke's Drift, an 1879 last-stand battle in south Africa during the Anglo-Zulu War. One of my favourite war films, this one was considered controvercial due to its portrail of the Zulu Kingdom. Add into that it's release druing the Cold War and Zulu is not controversial but very cultrually significant as well.

Born to a poor Cockney fishmonger and charwoman (you know, the folks that come around after hours to clean the office?), Michael Caine quickly discovered some important things about himself and the world around during a then-mandatory stint in National Service…a shattering of ivory tower illusions about communism, and a zest to live each day as if it were your last. Making his way up through the usual bit parts on television and film, his first big break came when cast in a fairly major part in a tale of a ragtag band of wounded soldiers against an army nearly thirty times its size in Stanley Baker’s Zulu. Not long after, he’d make his way through a trio of films based on (and a few along similar lines to) the gritty, more realistic answer to the James Bond films, Harry Palmer, starring in well remembered films like Alfie, the Italian Job, Get Carter and the Destructors, cementing his reputation as a likeable, down to earth leading man before lapsing into paycheck jobs like The Swarm, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure and The Hand, and more infamous fare like Brian DePalma’s Dressed to Kill and Jaws 4: the Revenge, before winding up cast as Alfred in Batman Begins, Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises… Somewhat controversial for his years in tax exile and support of Brexit, the man nonetheless leaves behind a plethora of memorable film, both in the accepted and camp sense of the word…and to quote the man himself: Not many people know that! Episode 013 of the new podcast from the Stinking Pause stable of podcasts featuring Scott and Tony. Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British films....with the occasional hint of professionalism.   In this episode, Scott has selected Hell Drivers from 1957 – directed by Cy Enfield and starring Stanley Baker. Joe 'Tom' Yateley is an ex-convict. Trying to leave his past behind, he decides to start working for the Hawlett Trucking company, which transports gravel. It's an aggressive company, where speed is everything. Doing too few runs in a day? You're out. Red is the most experienced trucker; he can do 18 runs in a day. Tom soon makes friends with Lucy, the secretary, and Gino, a driver. But the record of Red intrigues him and he wants to break it. Gino advises against it, but he helps Tom when he wants to go through with it. Soon trouble begins when Red and the other drivers form a united front against Tom. Just when Tom has enough and decides to pack his bags, Lucy tells him Gino had a terrible accident. As promised, here is the second CHMTC mini-episode, in which Mrs Classic Film Fan provides more on the sources of her research into the lives and careers of the late great studio movie stars. As well as some interesting books on Stanley Baker and the making of the film Zulu, Mrs CFF spills the beans on the main sources of her info on the late, great Marlon Brando, featured in an earlier CHMTC episode, including the 1962 Saturday Evening Post article which ruined Brando's credibility for years. The article can be accessed via the following link:  http://www.saturdayeveningpost.com/wp-content/uploads/satevepost/mutiny-of-brando-1963.pdf She also also mentions the plight of London's beloved Cinema Museum, the former workhouse home of Charlie Chaplin and his mother, now a respected venue for the showing of some of the great American and British classic films of yesteryear and classic film memorabilia.  More on the CM and the petition to save this fab venue can be found on the following link:      http://www.cinemamuseum.org.uk/2017/petition-to-save-the-cinema-museum/#.WkWBpzA9QUA.email Please do have look and sign up to save this worthy venue.

Listen to CHMTCs last instalment of the series "the British Are Coming" about the life and career of the late, great Stanley Baker. Stanley Baker was born in the impoverished community driven  coalmining region of Ferndale in Wales. Like his contemporary Richard Burton, he was discovered by a local school teacher, who cast him in school plays and encouraged him to develop a real career in acting. This he did with considerable success, becoming  a powerful actor and producer in British and American movies in the 50s, 60s and 70s. It all culminated in the creation of a fine body of work, much of which has become an integral part of British popular culture. A life long labour supporter, Baker fought for roles that showed the inner workings of the new working class young man. Despair, disappointment, anger, intelligence and ambition, in a British movie landscape that still believed that heroes were stiff upper lip pretty boys, who gave orders rather than took them.   With films like Hell Drivers, Zulu, The Italian Job and The Accident, Stanley Baker showed a range and ability which took him to the top of the film business. Have a listen to the fascinating life and career of this too often forgotten Welsh actor, who remains in the eyes of many the first of the great Angry Young Men of British film, stage and TV screen. Also hear about the lives and personalities of some of the stars who were around in Stanley's day, making their own mark on the movies of their time.

This is the first of a series of podcasts called "the British Are Coming." The series will cover the lives and careers of 4 great British film stars who left their mark on British and American Films in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.   Merle Oberon, David Niven, Stewart Granger and the late great Stanley Baker were and remain filmatic forces to be reckoned with.    Talented, good looking, charming and unique they represented at least in terms of their public image the best of the British Empire. Forging careers in the UK and Hollywood they reached levels of success that many British actors of today aspire to but are unlikely to achieve. But in true Classic film fashion they were also decidedly imperfect human beings who experienced many tears as well as laughter.   Merle Oberon, a child of the British Empire, was one of the most beautiful women that filmdom ever produced. She was a major film star of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.  When she died in 1979 she appeared to have it all, a handsome husband 25 years her junior,  wealth, fame, children and a respected film career. But Merle Oberon was a women full of mystery and anxiety who spent over 40 years covering up her past and denying her true identity. Enjoy the  telling of the story of Merle Oberon by Mrs Classic Film Fan an actress who chose never to look back.   NB: Check out the pictures, articles and other sources of information which informed this episode on the great MO, which will be put on the Classic Hollywood MTC Facebook page over the next few days.

Mitch has selected this testosterone-fuelled British thriller starring Stanley Baker as a tough as nails truck driver pitting his nerve against Patrick McGoohan. It's new to both Gordy & Cross, and although it's a little too criminally overlooked to be regarded as a classic, it is in black & white so what will they make of it?

Special thanks to Glenn Seubert for commissioning this podcast on the 1964 British film "Zulu". Directed by Cy Endfield and starring Stanley Baker and a very young Michael Caine, it depicts a fictionalized version of a real life stand off between 100 British soldiers and 4,000 Zulu warriors in the battle for South Africa. The film is gorgeous in it's look and especially color palette, and the lead performances by Baker and Caine are interesting as two soldiers vying for power and making tough decisions under an extremely daunting challenge. We both cry out for more cultural and historical context for this film, and while Jim had problems with some aspects of the film being dated, I enjoyed it for the throw back to a classic age of cinema that it is. Thanks again, Glenn, we really appreciate your support and sharing a beloved classic with us. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
