Homeschooling has the power to shape not just families, but entire communities. In this thought-provoking conversation, Dr. Myles Wertz (associate professor of theology and director of Baptist Studies at Abilene Christian University) joins HSLDA Attorney Will Estrada to explore Dr. Wertz's recent article in Christianity Today and his own personal homeschool journey. When parents choose homeschooling out of a desire to do what's best for their children, the ripple effects extend far beyond the family—fostering individuals who enrich their communities and drive positive change in society. “When we allow families to pursue homeschooling, we find that certain practices or ways of educating begin to bubble up from the surface that wouldn't have been discovered or wouldn't have been understood had there not been the room for homeschooling to exist. . .I think education needs to be more personalized and more attentive to the particular needs of students in nature. I think that's something that homeschooling can naturally do.”—Dr. Myles Werntz

On the latest episode of On the Brink with Andi Simon, we explore the innovative and impactful journeys of two remarkable guests: Shanna Greathouse, founder and CEO of Pigybak, and Joe Manofsky, chairman, president, and co-founder of One Step Ahead Ohio. These two changemakers are reshaping how we think about skilled trades, community development, and career pathways in ways that are inspiring and deeply transformational. Shanna Greathouse: Transforming Communities Through Technology Shanna Greathouse's entrepreneurial journey is rooted in her love for community and her passion for creating equitable solutions. As the founder of Pigybak, she's revolutionizing the way homeowners and tradespeople connect. Leveraging AI-driven technology, Pigybakprovides a marketplace where contractors can streamline their scheduling while homeowners access affordable, collaborative home services. The company's unique "group deal" model encourages neighborhood collaboration, reducing costs and fostering a stronger sense of community. Drawing from her background in consulting and analytics, Shanna turned her observations of inefficiencies in the trades and home services industry into an innovative platform. Her deep commitment to supporting local tradespeople—many of whom are small business owners from underrepresented groups—adds a layer of purpose to Pigybak's mission. For Shanna, the initiative isn't just about home services; it's about empowering tradespeople, rebuilding neighborhoods, and creating sustainable opportunities for growth. Joe Manofsky: Advocating for Workforce Development in Ohio Joe Manofsky's path to philanthropy and advocacy began in his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, where community values shaped his drive to give back. As the co-founder of One Step Ahead Ohio, Joe leads a nonprofit that focuses on eliminating executive salaries, ensuring transparency, and directly supporting local families and nonprofits in Northeast Ohio. His initiatives extend to workforce development through the Skilled Labor Foundation, which aims to address the skilled trades shortage. Joe's vision includes early career exploration programs for middle school students, exposing them to the vast opportunities in skilled trades. By creating events that connect students, parents, and trades professionals, Joe and his team hope to shift the narrative around the trades, demonstrating that these careers are viable, lucrative, and vital to our economy. Through transparency, collaboration, and advocacy, Joe is transforming the perception of skilled trades, ensuring they are recognized for their significance and potential. Shifting the Trades Narrative To Build Better Communities Together, Shanna and Joe are tackling a shared challenge: changing the perception of skilled trades. Whether it's through gamifying trades to highlight their athleticism and skill or hosting community events that connect stakeholders, their work emphasizes the importance of collaboration and storytelling. As Andi Simon noted during the episode, this movement is about rebranding the trades, creating pride in these careers, and highlighting their critical role in community development. Why These Programs Matter In a time when workforce shortages are impacting industries from construction to healthcare, the work of innovators like Shanna and Joe is more important than ever. Their stories inspire action—whether it's supporting local tradespeople, exploring workforce development grants, or simply rethinking the career paths we advocate for in our communities. Takeaways for Listeners For Homeowners: Pigybak offers a way to support local tradespeople while collaborating with neighbors for affordable, community-driven solutions. For Advocates: One Step Ahead Ohio demonstrates how transparency, collaboration, and grassroots initiatives can drive change in workforce development. For Everyone: By raising awareness about the skilled trades, we can help young people see the potential for meaningful, successful careers outside of traditional college pathways. As I like to remind us, “Take your observations and turn them into innovations.” Shanna and Joe are perfect examples of this philosophy in action, using their insights to create solutions that empower individuals and strengthen communities. Catch the full episode to learn more about their inspiring work and discover how you can contribute to transforming the trades in your community. On this episode, we have the pleasure of diving into the world of community transformation with Dr. Chris Lambert, a visionary who's redefining nonprofit success and neighborhood revitalization. Dr. Chris Lambert is the founder and CEO of Life Remodeled, an award-winning author of "Next Level Nonprofit," and founder of the Next Level Nonprofit organizational operating system. His journey began far from the nonprofit sphere, with aspirations of law school and dreams of a lucrative career in real estate development. However, during his junior year at Indiana University, a profound spiritual awakening redirected his path towards a more service-oriented life. After earning his MDiv and a doctorate in preaching, Chris, along with his wife, moved to Liberia where they played a pivotal role in helping a village drill a well, acquire farm animals, and build their very first school. This transformative experience in Liberia set the stage for what would become his life's work. Upon returning to the U.S., Chris founded the church Ekklesia and shortly thereafter, in 2010, launched Life Remodeled. This impactful organization focuses on repurposing vacant school buildings into vibrant community centers and spearheading sustainable neighborhood revitalization projects. Dr. Lambert's work has not only earned him recognition on platforms like TEDx and accolades such as Crain's 40 Under 40, but also the admiration of communities and leaders around the nation. Yet, for Chris, the true excitement lies in the journey ahead and the people who join him in making a lasting difference. In today's episode, Dr. Lambert shares invaluable insights into creating scalable, sustainable, and impactful nonprofit organizations. He discusses the challenges and triumphs of turning abandoned structures into thriving community hubs, the importance of community involvement in revitalization projects, and how other nonprofit leaders can apply the principles of his Next Level Nonprofit system to magnify their impact. The historic venue, WOW Hall, a cherished cultural anchor in Eugene, Oregon, stands as a testament to community resilience and collaboration. Executive Director of the nonprofit, Deb Maher, shared their story, which embodies a vision-driven approach, emphasizing the power of positivity and collective action in transforming communities. WOW Hall, originally established in 1932 as a fraternity for woodworkers, faced near-demolition in 1975. However, a swift community effort saved the building, transforming it into a nonprofit performing arts center. Deb takes us through WOW Hall's rich history, emphasizing its evolution into a vibrant hub for cultural expression and community engagement. Central to WOW Hall's success is its unique membership-driven model. Deb points to the significance of community ownership, where members elect the board, fostering a sense of belonging and accountability. With over 600 volunteers, WOW Hall thrives on collective passion, offering diverse programs and events to enrich the community. Deb Maher's leadership philosophy centers on ‘appreciative inquiry', a strength-based model that ignites creativity and collaboration. She describes it as, "What are our strengths? The compelling vision is based on our passion. What do we love? What do we care about? And we create where we want to go and we call it forth in present tense we are." By focusing on shared passion and envisioning a compelling future, WOW Hall cultivates a culture of possibility and abundance. Deb adds, "You create change by creating the new. You carve out a place to create the new and have success. You create with the new, and in doing that, you do two things. You create the new while at the same time you negate the old." Maher also emphasizes keys of aligning individual strengths with organizational goals, fostering a dynamic, inclusive environment. You'll love this nonprofit's story! WOW Hall's transformation transcends internal dynamics, extending to broader community impact, and Deb Maher champions strategic partnerships and proactive outreach, positioning WOW Hall as a catalyst for economic and cultural revitalization. Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership with Ruth Haley Barton
This week we are taking a break from our conversations with Curt and his book The Deepest Place to talk about a different aspect of suffering: the communal, unmerited suffering that comes from oppression. Friend of the Transforming Center, Leo Ayala, is back with us to discuss this important topic. Leo and Ruth talk about the suffering his community in Puerto Rico has suffered as a part of the colonization and oppression of his country. Leo shares how no one taught him how to suffer in a Christian way and the particular problem of a faith without lament. Finally, Leo gives us practices and processes that help this kind of collective suffering form durable hope. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Leo Ayala served as a family pastor for over 15 years and later as lead pastor. For four years, he has been recovering from burnout, anxiety disorder, and depression. On his journey to heal his soul and develop new life rhythms, he completed Transforming Communities 15 and 18 with the Transforming Center. He is finishing a DMin. in Spiritual Formation on the topic of spirituality during seasons of disorientation. He is a liaison pastor for the Caminando Juntos (Urban Strategies) program, where he looks to improve the holistic well-being of Latino pastors. Founded as an artist collective in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Meow Wolf has evolved into a significant force in the experience economy, redefining what it means to engage with art. Under the leadership of Julie Heinrich, Chief Impact Officer, Meow Wolf's mission transcends the conventional, weaving together creativity, inclusivity, and societal change. At its core, Meow Wolf is about immersive experiences that invite participants of all ages to step inside the mind of an artist. The exhibitions, spread across locations in Denver, Las Vegas, and soon in the Houston area, offer a unique blend of art and storytelling, where every narrative is interlinked, creating a vast, interconnected story universe. This innovative approach to art is not just about spectacle; it's about creating a space where art becomes a shared, tactile experience, fostering a deep connection between the audience, the artists, and the narratives they explore.Julie Heinrich's journey with Meow Wolf underscores a narrative of creativity and community. The organization's inception as an artist collective was a response to the restrictive nature of the traditional art scene, aiming instead to build a community grounded in generosity and inclusivity. This ethos has carried through to Meow Wolf's operations today, with a significant emphasis on hiring local artists and creating art that is accessible and engaging for diverse audiences. The Meow Wolf Foundation, led by Julie, embodies the organization's commitment to leveraging art for societal benefit. The foundation's initiatives focus on art access, healing, and transformation, particularly targeting grassroots projects, BIPOC-led or serving organizations, and youth-focused initiatives. This strategic focus not only amplifies underrepresented voices in the art world but also demonstrates a belief in art's power to catalyze positive change within communities. One of the foundation's notable strategies is its emphasis on supporting projects that make art accessible to broader segments of the population, including those in rural or underserved areas. By funding programs that, for example, facilitate school trips to cultural spaces or promote cultural sharing in indigenous communities, the foundation ensures that the transformative power of art reaches beyond urban centers, touching lives across diverse social and geographical landscapes. The story of Meow Wolf, from its humble beginnings to its current status as a cultural powerhouse, is a testament to the potential of art to bridge divides, inspire change, and build community. The involvement of notable figures like George R.R. Martin, who provided early support for the venture, adds a layer of intrigue, illustrating the unexpected intersections between popular culture and the art world. As Meow Wolf continues to expand, both physically and into digital realms, the question of how art impacts society becomes even more pertinent. With Julie at the helm of impact initiatives, Meow Wolf is not just creating art; it's crafting experiences that challenge, delight, and, most importantly, bring people together in a shared journey of discovery and transformation.“We've always been, as I mentioned, very community-minded since those early days of art making in the warehouse space,” Julie says. “Our artists were even dumpster diving for trash to create beautiful, expressive, maximalist creations.”In a world where the arts are often sidelined in favor of more "practical" pursuits, Meow Wolf's success story serves as a powerful reminder of the essential role creativity plays in fostering vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic communities. Through its immersive experiences and community-focused initiatives, Meow Wolf isn't just changing the way we see art; it's changing the way we see the world.Throughout her time with Meow Wolf, Julie has employed her superpower, a beginner's mindset, to help her drive impact.AI Episode Summary1. Julie Heinrich is the Chief Impact Officer of Meow Wolf, an immersive art and entertainment company that provides creative experiences for people of all ages.2. The company, which employs hundreds of artists, has exhibitions in New Mexico, Denver, Las Vegas, and Texas, with plans to expand further.4. Author George R.R. Martin, who resides in Santa Fe, was the original landlord and financial backer for Meow Wolf's first exhibition.5. The foundation's grants are distributed across the regions where Meow Wolf operates, supporting local artists, cultural accessibility, and the preservation of cultural practices in diverse communities.7. Julie's superpower is embracing a beginner's mindset, starting each day fresh and open to new experiences, which she believes is key to personal growth and transformation.8. She credits a guided meditation and a moment of silence in nature for inspiring her to pursue her current role at Meow Wolf, highlighting the importance of allowing space for creativity and new ideas.9. Julie advises exploring the intersection of art and healing, suggesting activities like drawing, singing, dancing, and spending time in silence to foster creativity and personal well-being.10. To learn more about Meow Wolf and the Foundation, visit MeowWolf.com and connect with Julie on LinkedIn; the grant application process is currently a closed system due to limited resources. How to Develop a Beginner's Mindset As a SuperpowerJulie's superpower revolves around consistently embracing a beginner's mindset, which involves starting each day fresh and being open to new experiences and ideas. This approach allows her to approach challenges and opportunities with a fresh perspective, unburdened by previous setbacks or the constraints of routine. It's a mindset that fosters learning, growth, and innovation, and she hopes to inspire her team at Meow Wolf with this same outlook, emphasizing the potential for renewal and the chance to approach tasks with rejuvenated energy and creativity.Julie illustrates her superpower through her personal journey toward her current role at Meow Wolf. Embracing the beginner's mindset and being open to joy and creativity led her to reach out to Meow Wolf's leadership, driven by her admiration for their work and the desire for more creativity in her life. This proactive step was fueled by moments of silence and reflection, including a profound experience in the Ojito Wilderness under a full moon, which culminated in her decision to seek a significant career change and reconnect with her roots. For developing a beginner's mindset as a personal strength, Julie suggests:* Exploring the intersection between art and healing and considering how creative activities like drawing, singing, or dancing can be therapeutic and open new aspects of oneself.* Allocating time for silence and reflection without pressure, allowing space for creativity and new ideas to emerge, especially during activities that encourage a state of flow, such as walking, being in nature, or driving.By following Julie's example and tips, you can make a beginner's mindset a personal skill. With practice, it can become a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileJulie Heinrich (she/her):Chief Impact Officer, Meow WolfAbout Meow Wolf: The Meow Wolf Foundation: The Meow Wolf Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity founded by Meow Wolf in 2022 and launched in 2023. In the latest episode we feature Chance Marshall and Zach Sanders, representing the 10 Country Chapter. We delve into an inspiring event that is trying to make a significant impact on the future of Mule Deer in Fremont County, Wyoming. The focal point of this episode is the recent Mule Deer Summit organized by the 10 Country Chapter, where local residents were invited to a neutral, Game and Fish-free platform to discuss their concerns and hopes for the preservation of these majestic creatures. The Mule Deer Summit served as a crucial step in fostering community engagement and active participation in conservation efforts. It's a testament to the power of ordinary citizens coming together to effect change. As our host Josh emphasized, considered citizens can make a difference, and this summit exemplifies the idea that collective action can make a difference. During the episode, Chance and Zach reflect on their roles as fathers and their shared goal of passing on the legacy of Mule Deer hunting to their children. Their passion for the sport and dedication to conservation shine through as they discuss various topics such as predation, limited quota versus general hunting, and the concerning issue of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Listeners will gain insights into the importance of open dialogue and community involvement in wildlife conservation. Chance and Zach helped lead groups during the Mule Deer Summit and their involvement serves as an inspiring call to action, encouraging others to attend similar events, like the Mule Deer Summit hosted by the 10 Country Chapter, or even initiate similar gatherings in their own communities.
