The youngest of the Gabor sisters was Eva, and to say that Eva worked for the career that Zsa Zsa sauntered into would be about right. An earnest actor, Eva toiled in relative obscurity for a quarter of a century before landing the role that finally made her a household name: Lisa Douglas, a big-city wife whose husband decides to leave it all behind for the bliss of their very own Green Acres. Through it all, in typical Gabor fashion, Eva married and divorced and married again (and divorced again, and again) and branched out into entrepreneurial endeavors, including Eva Gabor Wigs. The ‘jewel heist of the Century' occurred at the American Museum of Natural History, New York on 29th October, 1964. Florida surfer ‘Murph the Surf' and his accomplices, Allan Kuhn and Roger Clark, stole priceless gems, including the Star of India, worth over $3 million today. The lax security at the institution, along with non-functional alarms and reduced staff, made the theft relatively easy - but the perceived glamour and audacity of the operation caught America's attention, as the nation mourned President Kennedy. In this episode, The Retrospectors consider the fate of the still-missing Eagle Diamond; reveal the natty dress sense Murph employed on night he pulled off the theft; and explain how an alleged encounter with Eva Gabor helped put the perpetrators behind bars… Further Reading: • ‘How Three Amateur Jewel Thieves Made Off With New York's Most Precious Gems' (Smithsonian Magazine, 2014): https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/how-three-amateur-jewel-thieves-made-new-yorks-most-precious-gems-180949885/ • ‘How a Band of Surfer Dudes Pulled Off the Biggest Jewel Heist in N.Y. We're happy to welcome Daniel Budnik (@dannyslacks1) to the podcast to discuss an underrated comic great of the 1960s, Green Acres. Daniel wrote “From Beverly Hills to Hooterville,” an episode guide and analysis of the three shows created by Paul Henning in the 1960s: The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction and Green Aces. We talk about the show's origin and how Jay Sommers based on the show on “Granby's Green Acres,” a radio show with a similar premise back in the 1950. There's a lot of talk on the show about Sommers and writing partner Chevillat, who scripted almost all of the show's 170 episodes over six seasons. There's lots of talk about the cast, headed by Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor and the various folks that inhabit Hooterville, including handyman Ed (Tom Lester) shifty salesman Mr. Haney (Pat Buttram) and of course, the breakout star of the show at the time, Arnold Ziffel (Arnold the Pig). We discuss the surreal and absurdist comedy found on the show, which probably goes back to the careers of Sommers and Chevillat, who worked with people in vaudeville, film and radio like the Marx Brothers, Burns and Allen and Laurel & Hardy. There's lots of talk about our favorite and/or memorable episodes and bits, including Lisa's cooking, Oliver's empassioned speeches about farming and all the metatext in the show. This was a very fun show to record and discuss such a television classic. We hope to have Daniel back on the show to talk about some of his other areas of research he has done in his books and podcasts, including Supertrain and Time Express, that's the Vincent Price “Fantasy Island on a train” show whose name we couldn't remember.

The first celebrities of their kind, the Gabors were considered famous for just being famous. With 19 husbands among the three of them and their fair share of very public affairs, they became notorious. But there was so much more to them than that. They were a tight-knit family of Hungarian immigrants who fought and escaped encroaching Nazi forces (all in their own unique way). They were successful businesswomen and talented performers who excelled together as well as apart. And, most importantly to us, they were sisters! Magda, Zsa Zsa, and Eva Gabor represent the best side of sisterhood: they were there for each other during their highs and lows, helped each other's careers, and stood by each other's sides until the end of their lives. They were so big that it took more than one continent to contain them. These thirteen things that you probably didn't know about The Rescuers Down Under, should satisfy your cravings for squeaky sleuths until the inevitable live action version comes out. This was Eva Gabor's last film before her death in 1995. A third Rescuers movie was planned for 1996, but after her death, this and all future Rescuers movies were scrapped. In the original Rescuers film, the albatross Orville was voiced by Jim Jordan, who died two years before this film released. The producers didn't want to replace Jordan, so Orville was replaced with the character's brother Wilbur, voiced by John Candy. This is a reference to the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, the inventors and pilots of the first functional airplane. Disney's first animated sequel. This would later carry on with Fantasia 2000 and Winnie the Pooh, whilst the rest of the sequels would be straight to video. This was the first 100% digital feature film ever made. The animation and backgrounds were done traditionally but all of the coloring, many effects, and the final film printing was all done digitally. This was also the first film produced with Disney's Academy Award-winning "CAPS" production system, which cut the production time down by at least six months. On its initial release, this film was preceded by the Mickey Mouse short subject The Prince and the Pauper. Interestingly enough, this was only the second Mickey Mouse short made since the 1950s, with the first being Mickey's Christmas Carol, which was made to accompany the 1983 re-release of The Rescuers. The twisted version of "Home on the Range" that McLeach sings was not performed by George C. Scott. It was instead sung by the voice of Joanna, Frank Welker. This is the least successful film released during the Disney Renaissance between 1989-1999. After it only grossed $27,931,461 from that weekend's box office, Disney executive Jeffrey Katzenberg pulled all television advertisements for the film. Opening on the same weekend as Home Alone, which went on to gross more than ten times as much, did not help its cause. This financial failure discouraged Disney from releasing subsequent non-computer-animated sequels in theaters with very few exceptions. Originally Wilbur's calendar was to have a picture of Bart Simpson from The Simpsons; which can be seen in the original animatic. A lifelong Disney fan, Bruce Broughton jumped at the chance to compose the score and turned down an offer to score Home Alone to work on this film. Is the last Disney Film to be accompanied by a Featurette that's over 20 minutes long, up until Pixar's Coco 27 years later. The first Disney animated feature to use fully-rendered CG backgrounds. Storyboard artist Joe Ranft constantly bolstered the creative morale of his crew, but rarely drew storyboard sequences himself. In addition to this, Ranft entered creative disagreements with the studio management and marketing executives, including one disagreement where he optioned for the casting of an Aboriginal Australian child actor to voice Cody, which was overridden with the decision to cast "a little white blonde kid." Noting the rise of Americans becoming more environmentally conscious, this marks as the studio's first film since Bambi to have an animal rights and environmental message. A title like The Sugar Bean Sisters may conjure up images of sweet Southern belles, mint julips, or quaint sibling rivalries that end in hugs, forgiveness and tears. Perhaps it invokes memories of the female singing groups of by-gone days like the Andrews Sisters Wrong. Faye Clementine and Willie Mae Nettles are living out their lives in their ramshackle family home in swamp-side Sugar Bean, Florida. Once a happy family of five, they’re down to two after Mama’s passing, Papa’s hanging (by mob after accidentally poisoning 14 beauty pageant contestants,) and third sister Robinelle’s unfortunate consumption by ‘gator. Willie Mae pines for the local Mormon Bishop and the bright lights of Salt Lake City. Faye longs for the return of an alien spaceship that landed in their corn field twenty-five years ago, and hopes it will whisk her away to some distant planet. Their mundane existence is interrupted by the arrival of Miss Videllia Sparks, a “dancer” out of New Orleans stranded by car trouble. Then things start to get weird. A hidden grapefruit fortune, Eva Gabor wigs, sandwiches, Jack Daniels, snakes, the Weekly World News, voodoo curses, Disney World, ghosts, a Reptile Woman and spontaneous human combustion all come to play over this bizarre play’s two hour running time. Need I say this show has some twists and turns to it? Director Denise Elia-Yen has gathered a tight ensemble of performers, including Lydia Revelos, Larry Williams and Sharon Griffith, but make no bones about it, Mesdames Mary Gannon Graham and mollie boice rule the Sugar Bean roost as the strangest pair of sisters since Blanche and ‘Baby’ Jane Hudson from Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? The humor, as that reference may indicate, is often macabre as the show begins by taking you one on one journey and by intermission veers to another. The humor, though plentiful, gets darker and darker as the evening progresses. All this weirdness takes place on finely detailed, over-stuffed, multi-level set by Eddy Hansen and Elizabeth Bazzano that is as much a character in this piece as any of the performers. It may be the most interesting set I’ve seen in the Condiotti space. Adding to the swampy ambience are some nice projections by Patrick Taber and a terrific sound design by Jessica Johnson. It’s tough to categorize the Spreckels Theatre Company’s production of The Sugar Bean Sisters. Nathan Sanders’s script is a southern gothic theatrical stew - part family drama, part jet-black comedy, and part supernatural fantasy. At heart, it’s a comedy of desperation. It’s the oddest play I’ve seen in while, and I just saw a play about Jeffrey Dahmer. It’s campy, creepy and often very funny. There’s certainly nothing else like it on stage right now in this area. By all means, head on out to the Spreckels Performing Arts Center, if ya like. But DON’T sit in Momma’s chair. It just ain’t done… The Sugar Bean Sisters plays at the Spreckels Performing Arts Center in Rohnert Park through April 9. For more information, go to spreckelsonline.com

I'm honored to have Rachelle Carson Begley on my show today. She's an actress, mom, environmentalist, and wife to the incredible Ed Begley, Jr..  Rachellle already knew she wanted to be an actress four years old and landed her first professional job on the soap “Another World” when she was only 20. Rachelle and Ed  recently wrapped their third season of their own show “Living With Ed” on Discovery’s Planet Green. It’s about their wonderfully wacky lifestyle that hopefully one day will be more main stream. But, today, it’s still a novelty. They live in a solar powered house, and drive a Prius or Ed’s all electric car around LA. They recycle everything! It’s been an adjustment to live like he does, but she managed to adjust. She has said she feels a little like Eva Gabor in “Green Acres.” Rachelle is also very involved in several non-profits. Over the years, she has supported many charities, including Water Keepers, Green Wish, anything involving children and Alzheimer’s Disease. We'll talk about the environment's impact on our health. Tune in and call with questions!

They were so big that it took more than one continent to contain them. These thirteen things that you probably didn't know about The Rescuers Down Under, should satisfy your cravings for squeaky sleuths until the inevitable live action version comes out. 13. This was Eva Gabor's last film before her death in 1995. A third Rescuers movie was planned for 1996, but after her death, this and all future Rescuers movies were scrapped. 12. 11. Disney's first animated sequel. This would later carry on with Fantasia 2000 and Winnie the Pooh, whilst the rest of the sequels would be straight to video. 10. 9. 8. The twisted version of "Home on the Range" that McLeach sings was not performed by George C. Scott. It was instead sung by the voice of Joanna, Frank Welker. 7. 6. Originally Wilbur's calendar was to have a picture of Bart Simpson from The Simpsons; which can be seen in the original animatic. 5. A lifelong Disney fan, Bruce Broughton jumped at the chance to compose the score and turned down an offer to score Home Alone to work on this film. 4. Is the last Disney Film to be accompanied by a Featurette that's over 20 minutes long, up until Pixar's Coco 27 years later. 3. The first Disney animated feature to use fully-rendered CG backgrounds. 2. Storyboard artist Joe Ranft constantly bolstered the creative morale of his crew, but rarely drew storyboard sequences himself. In addition to this, Ranft entered creative disagreements with the studio management and marketing executives, including one disagreement where he optioned for the casting of an Aboriginal Australian child actor to voice Cody, which was overridden with the decision to cast "a little white blonde kid." 1. Noting the rise of Americans becoming more environmentally conscious, this marks as the studio's first film since Bambi to have an animal rights and environmental message. The Rescuers Down Under (1990) G | 1h 17min | Animation, Adventure, Crime | 16 November 1990 (USA) The R.A.S. agents, Miss Bianca and Bernard, race to Australia to save a little boy and a rare golden eagle from a murderous poacher.
