The Young Pioneer Podcast Season 2 concludes with double-header episode! S2, Ep 6 opens with a discussion between host Justin Martell and YPT founder/CEO Gareth Johnson discussing the big question "when will North Korea re-open for tourism?" Recorded YPT's recent research trip to China to meet with our North Korean partners and explore the Sino-Korean border for the first time in four years, which made news among the community of North Korea watchers, the discussion gives a projected timeline for the Hermit Kingdom's re-opening as well as some educated guesses about the future of tourism in North Korea. Following Gareth's interview, Justin talks with YPT friend and travel partner Dr. Calvin Sun. Calvin is both an ER doctor in New York City and travel agent. Through his company Monsoon Diaries, he has partnered with YPT on many tours for well over a decade. In the interview, recorded in Mogadishu, Somalia, Justin and Calvin discuss Calvin's new book "The Monsoon Diaries: A Doctor's Journey of Hope and Healing from the ER Frontlines to the Far Reaches of the World," available now from Harper Horizon. Calvin has travelled to over 190 countries in the past 10 years whilst also completing medical school and residency. He has an organisation, the Monsoon Diaries that leads everyday travellers around the world on memorable adventures. He is the author of the book, ‘The Monsoon Diaries'. What I personally love about this conversation is Calvin's depth of insight from travelling. This rare mix of both a medical mind and spiritual soul brings a beautiful entanglement of knowledge and inner knowing. We speak on the theme of freedom and Calvin shares this idea that, ‘What is freedom but to do what you want as an anonymous stranger' which really spoke to me and my pull, particularly in my 20s having travelled to almost 50 countries, towards self-exploration and expression. We speak to the beauty in the experience of things not lasting forever and the importance of synchronicities in life; temporary entanglements; messages we believe are telling you that you are indeed on the right path. Please enjoy this conversation with Calvin.#jennahlouise #tobehumanpodcast
ER Physician, filmmaker, popular speaker and travel company founder. Here how it all comes together [Show Summary] Dr. Calvin Sun is an emergency room physician, known for his blog-turned-travel company. During the pandemic, his travel content quickly shifted to real-time COVID updates as he chronicled his experience as an emergency room doctor in Manhattan. He has gathered all of these experiences into his newly released book, The Monsoon Diaries: A Doctor's Journey of Hope and Healing from the ER Frontlines to the Far Reaches of the World. Interview with Dr. Calvin Sun, Founder and CEO, The Monsoon Diaries [Show Notes] Welcome for the 493rd episode of Admissions Straight Talk, Accepted's podcast. Thanks for joining me. Given the time of year, I'd like to highlight for today's listeners a wonderful resource if and when you're invited to a medical school interview, Accepted's free download called The Ultimate Guide to Medical School Interview Success. In the guide, you learn how to prepare for interviews, including the difficult questions, how to make sure your body language matches your intent, and what is proper follow-up after your interview. Grab your free copy at accepted.com/ultimatemediv and enhance your chance of acceptance. It's really hard to summarize Dr. Calvin Sun's bio, but I'll try anyway. Calvin graduated from Columbia in 2008 and in 2014, he graduated from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine and then began his residency in emergency medicine at Montefiore and Jacobi Medical Centers. He also was the director of Resident Wellness at Jacobi. In his non-existent spare time during medical school, he somehow managed to found and now runs The Monsoon Diaries, which he describes as a blog-turned-travel company. The Monsoon Diaries organizes flexible budget trips and has gone to over 128 countries in the past six years. He's also a filmmaker, popular speaker and activist in the Asian American community emergency room physician, and, at one time at least, was a clinical assistant professor of Emergency Medicine. Listeners, I invite you to listen to accepted.com/254 for the incredible story of how Calvin Sun became Dr. Sun, founded Monsoon Diaries, the travel company, and portrays his experience as an emergency room physician in Manhattan, the corona pandemic's epicenter in 2020. To start, I'd like to ask you how you came to write your just-released book, The Monsoon Diaries: A Doctor's Journey of Hope and Healing from the ER Frontlines to the Far Reaches of the World. What's the story behind the book? [3:12] The story is my life in a nutshell, in a show-don't-tell fashion. It can also be seen as a love letter of gratitude because it's being released at the tail end of what we hope to be the worst or the end of the pandemic. I was approached by a literary agent two years ago. It was a totally cold approach in January 2021, and they asked if I'd be interested in writing a book. I think I had mentioned to you in our prior podcast, episode 254, that I have this habit of writing, which is what caused my Monsoon Diaries blog to turn into a community. I was writing live and blogging live on my travels while I was a full-time medical student. People started following along and it turned itself into a community. During the pandemic, I did the same thing. We couldn't travel during the pandemic. It was not ethical, so I worked all the time, and I blogged about it in the same way I would on a trip because it was all new territory and new frontiers. That's the only thing I knew how to do to keep myself alive when I couldn't travel. It was the next best thing. People followed along, one of whom was a literary agent who then wanted to turn it into a book so I said, "Sure." One thing led to another, and two years later we now have a book published by Harper Collins in bookstores since September 27th. What do you hope people take away from The Monsoon Diaries? [4:57]

Dr. Calvin Sun, founder and CEO of The Monsoon Diaries, joins Dear Asian Americans to talk about his new book, appropriately titled The Monsoon Diaries. Dr. Sun shares about the origins of The Monsoon Diaries blog, what led to the book, and how it uses Covid-19 as a backdrop to tell an overarching story of how one derives resilience from something they already have, rather than acquiring it externally. Listen in as Jerry and Dr. Sun also discuss navigating the Asian American family dynamic, the importance of self-advocacy, the effects of the pandemic on healthcare workers, and the two most important bets of his life: the one that took him to Egypt and the one that took him to medical school.Meet Dr. SunMy name is Calvin Sun and I was born and raised in NYC. What was hoped to be a unified public health initiative to end an ongoing medical crisis became a divisive and bipartisan issue nationwide. Vaccine mandates were instituted across many states to combat the rise of the novel coronavirus variants and hopefully cease the spread of preexisting viral forms. With the placement of mandates, especially within the spheres of healthcare professions, efforts to uphold this decision were met with degrees of resistance and hesitancy. According to the New York Times, a staggering 37,000 healthcare workers have left their jobs as a result of the vaccine mandates. How has this exodus affected the American healthcare system that was already struck on its knees with burnout and short staffing? In this episode, we tackle these topics of vaccine mandates and rising variants back in the summer of 2021 with "The Monsoon Diaries" travel agency founder & CEO, activist, public keynote speaker, medical contributor to national television's biggest news channels, circulating NYC Emergency Medicine physician, and a great friend of mine: Dr. Calvin Sun. Receiving his bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Columbia University in 2008, attaining his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 2014, and further completing his Emergency Medicine residency in Jacobi/Montefiore of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2018, Dr. Sun stood as the first-hand reporter of the COVID-19 pandemic during its Spring 2020 spike in New York City emergency rooms. Are mask and vaccine mandates ethical and/or constitutional? How has the safety of the vaccines against COVID-19 been proven in vivo since their dissemination? Where do viral variants actually come from: the vaccinated or the unvaccinated? How does natural immunity fare with inoculation? As divisive and controversial as these questions are, we fulfill the goal of this series: providing evidence-based and first-hand information that seeks to defy life-harming misinformation across social media.Livestream Air Date: August 26, 2021Dr. Calvin Sun: IG @monsoondiaries, FB @CalvinDSun, Twitter @monsoondiariesThe Monsoon Diaries: Web monsoondiaries.com & YT The Monsoon DiariesFriends of Franz: IG @friendsoffranzpodChristian Franz (Host): IG @chrsfranz & YT Christian Franz

Do you believe in serendipity? That things in life just happen...whether for a concrete reason and if not, just in random but feel so mystically intentional? This seems to be the case for our episode guest whom I have admired for the longest time ever since I stumbled upon him in a YouTube video way back in nursing school. "The Monsoon Diaries" travel agency founder & CEO, choreographer, photographer, filmmaker, activist, public keynote speaker, medical contributor to national television's biggest news channels, circulating NYC Emergency Medicine physician, and now someone that I consider a great friend and mentor: Dr. Calvin Sun.Receiving his bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from Columbia University in 2008, attaining his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 2014, and further completing his Emergency Medicine residency in Jacobi/Montefiore of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2018, Dr. Sun stood as the first-hand reporter of the COVID-19 pandemic during its Spring 2020 spike in New York City emergency rooms. It was therefore just fitting that we looked to his years of education and training expertise to answer all things ER: the craziest event he has ever witnessed, the weirdest things he has pulled out from a person's body, first-handed witnessing of supernatural events in the hospital, and if the media was ultimately lying about the magnitude of the virus.Hands-down being one of the most passionate people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and talking to, we went on a journey to uncharted waters of conversations about the serendipitous events he went through in life that led him to medical school, his love for traveling even throughout medical school and residency (190 countries in total!), keys to avoiding burnout, the importance of mental health, the broken healthcare system, activism against the rise of AAPI hate and racial violence, thoughts on the COVID-19 vaccines, and even one of the most requested answer...his workout routine. Come and learn about all medicine, life in general, and yes...the abs.

In Episode 66, emergency medicine MD, Dr. Calvin Sun returns as a guest for our season 9 premiere to discuss the COVID-19 vaccine, our social contract, and the misinformation dividing us during the pandemic. For a pandemic that has lasted almost two years, Dr. Sun discusses how everyone must play their part in preventing the spread, and that unvaccinated people increase the chance of more variants developing (15:20). He shares his journey of getting vaccinated with others through the Monsoon Diaries and social media, hoping to inspire and reassure his community (23:15). The advice he offers those who are concerned about the side-effects of the vaccine is risk assessment; it comes down to the effects of COVID-19 vs. the effects of the vaccine (30:00). The personal side-effects of the vaccine that Dr. Sun has experienced include the ability to travel with the world, meet new people, not stress over the unknown and be happy (42:45). Listen to hear Dr. Sun's advice for the holiday season as COVID-19 cases begin to rise (47:00). Like, comment, and subscribe! For Episode 22 of 17 Minutes of Science we are joined by Diana Klatt. Diana is an epidemiologist and science communicator. She has worked in non-profits, NGOs, academia, and industry with public health, human rights, healthcare access and policy, and digital health technology. Her work ranges from digging into health data, to creating global health educational programs, to changing health policies, to writing and hosting public health education mini-series. She studied epidemiology at NYU College of Global Public Health, Physical Therapy at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences, and Biotechnology and Digital Media at NYU Tandon School of Engineering. She uses her diverse background and experiences to drive her passions in her work in digital health tech at Nivi, her educational podcast and non-profit organization Global Caveat, and the cultural exchanges and travels she plans with the Monsoon Diaries. Diana joins us to discuss her role as a sociobehavioral epidemiologist and how even though the term "epidemiology" is generating a lot of buzz right now with COVID-19, not all epidemiologists study infectious diseases.
Dr. Calvin Sun is a New York City based emergency room doctor and owner of a travel company and blog, Monsoon Diaries. After a major international trip in early March, Dr. Sun arrived back to NYC for a shift in one of the several emergency rooms he works in and started treating the first wave of early covid19 patients. For the next few months, Dr. Sun and his colleagues worked tirelessly to contain the pandemic while the emergency rooms and hospitals in the city were bursting at the seams, all while having little access to new masks, gloves and face shields. Dr. Sun talks about what it was really like inside the hospitals while New York was under siege by the virus and how he managed his own mental health. He shares his experience returning to travel safely and what he wants us all to know about the healthcare heroes throughout the world fighting coronavirus.

Yo! What's up dudes. This week is a new episode with Calvin Sun. I think Calvin could be in my personal top 5 “Most Interesting Man in the World.” He is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, former MTV show host, dancer, medical doctor, and entrepreneur. There's probably a few more that I left out. Calvin is an ER Doctor in New York City and he's traveled to 170+ countries. What's crazy is that he traveled to 150 of those countries during medical school and residency. While traveling, Calvin, started a blog documenting his travels which turned into a travel company. That company is called http://monsoondiaries.com/ (Monsoon Diaries). In this episode we talk about: how he dealt with his father's death at an early age getting into medical school with a below average academic record radical honesty and where that has gotten him being present and in his words “fuck your dreams” how his trip to North Korea went viral his plans for his travel company and much more This is a great episode. Thanks for listening guys. Please share, subscribe, and if you really like the show, please leave us a 5 star review! It helps other people find the podcast and also helps me get other great guests to interview. I would really appreciate it.
