We’re turning to every traveler’s favorite – or least favorite – topic this week, and that’s airfares. After aviation editor Robert Silk wrote an article on which way air prices are trending in 2025, we asked Scott Keyes, the founder of Going -- an app that combines software and human Flight Experts to uncover flight deals and mistake fares and send them to its 2 million-plus members -- to come onto the episode with Silk and host Rebecca Tobin. Together, we unpack the numbers further and ask: Why are fares trending upward? What does that mean for airfare bargain-hunters? And when is the best time to book a flight (and should you wait for a last-second deal)? This episode was recorded Jan. 17 and has been edited for length and clarity. It's the Friday news roundup! As Pittsburgh gets ready to celebrate Labor Day — and host presidential hopefuls again — we're digging into our history as the birthplace of the modern labor movement. Plus, we finally know why the Peregrine moon lander failed, but we don't understand why Pennsylvanians aren't claiming their Powerball money. We always cite our sources: President Biden's been to four of our Labor Day Parades here over the past 15 years, and he's set to come to the area this year with presidential nominee and current VP Kamala Harris on Monday. We'll see if he makes another parade appearance! Republican presidential candidates have been in our area too. VP nominee JD Vance was in Erie this week, and former president Donald Trump will be in Johnstown today. Labor Day weekend is going to be another busy time for the airport, so if you've got a flight early in the morning, make sure you build in extra travel time. Want to take a vacation when the airport's not as hectic? Check out our interview with Scott Keyes, the founder of Going, where he gives us the insider scoop on how to find cheap flights from Pittsburgh. Ahead of the summer travel season, the Biden administration announced it would propose new rules requiring compensation for air passengers if they end up stranded, and it's the airline's fault. That's in addition to a push in Congress for a “passengers' bill of rights.” Given that nearly 8 million people traveled through O'Hare and Midway airports in May alone last year, Scott Keyes the potential new rules should be welcome news for Chicago travelers. Keyes helps people find inexpensive flights through his site Going, and he tells host Jacoby Cochran about passenger compensation, being stranded at O'Hare, and his top tip for finding a cheap flight. Keyes on flight cancellations and lower airfares
Travellers continue to battle long wait times, delays and flight cancellations as they try to travel by plane this summer. Those challenges prompted Air Canada to cancel flights throughout the summer. For Jenn MacDougall, that meant she had to sleep on the floor of the airport. Now she tells guest host Rosemary Barton that she's calling for action; travel expert Scott Keyes discusses how people can be best prepared; and Monette Pasher, president of the Canadian Airports Council, says global travel likely won't get better anytime soon.
Art of Manliness Travel can offer a lot of good: memory-making adventure, mind-expanding experiences, and plenty of fun and relaxation. It's not surprising then that most people say they'd like to travel more than they do. What's keeping them from fulfilling that desire? Well, one obstacle, especially these days, is that the high price of plane tickets puts flying out of reach. My guest today can help you surmount this obstacle so you can get away more often. His name is Scott Keyes, and he's the founder of Scott's Cheap Flights and the author of Take More Vacations: How to Search Better, Book Cheaper, and Travel the World. Today on the show, Scott shares how scoring cheap flights can help you travel more often, the advantages of taking more frequent vacations, and the psychological benefit of planning your trips well in advance. We then get into the misconceptions people have about ticket pricing. From there we turn to Scott's strategies for booking cheap flights, beginning with why he recommends adopting a "Flight First" rather than "Destination First" approach. Scott shares the "Goldilocks" time window when cheap flights are most likely to pop up, the benefits of building flexibility into your itinerary, the days that are typically cheapest to fly, and his favorite search site to look for flights. He also explains how to use the 24-hour rule and Southwest Airlines as arbitrage in getting better prices on your tickets, and how to employ what he calls the "Greek Islands Strategy" to save money when flying internationally. We end our conversation with how to take advantage of "mistake fares," and whether the high prices you're seeing this summer are here to stay.Connect With Scott KeyesScott's Cheap FlightsScott on Twitter
Lately, it feels like we're surrounded by systems and industries that aren't working the way they should. There's an oil shortage, and a baby formula shortage, and a used car shortage, and a microchip shortage. Now, here comes the airline industry shortage. This past weekend, thousands of flights were cancelled because airlines didn't have enough pilots, grounds crew, or planes. People were stranded in airports for eight hours or longer. JetBlue, American, and Delta collectively canceled about 9-10 percent of their flights—between five and 10 times higher than their historical average. And some experts say that if you're planning to fly at all this summer, things will only get worse. How did this happen? When will it end? Today's guest is Scott Keyes. He is the founder of Scott's Cheap Flights, a newsletter and business with more than 2 million members. We talk about the origins of the crisis, the economics of the airline industry, and why the decline of business travel is a cannonball in a lake whose ripple effects are wreaking all sorts of havoc. Take More Vacations by Scott Keyes is the best book I've read in a while. In this episode, I share with you what I'm taking from this book for my next trip. There are many helpful tips in the book. However, the life-changing point is to reverse your travel planning. Plan your trip with the price in mind first, then destination and dates. Most people do it the other way around – Destination and date first, then try to find a cheap flight. In other words, the flexible traveler can always find cheap flights! I love this book. DO YOU LIKE TO TRAVEL!?! Do you like unique business models?! Amazing. If you said yes to at least one of those, then today's podcast interview is gonna make your week. Today we're talking to the CEO of Scott's Cheap Flights, Brian Kidwell. If you haven't heard about Scott's Cheap Flights, we'd honestly be shocked. They're a subscription email list company that sends out emails to their subscribers every month finding incredible deals on cheap flights. Brian was a digital nomad who had always been interested in entrepreneurship and travel. After backpacking through Europe after college, Brian started a website focused on building a travel community where he would sell a bundle of deals on travel services. One thing led to another and Brian teamed up with Scott Keyes - the author at the time of a cheap travel ebook, and the two of them ended up founding Scott's Cheap Flights which now has 30+ employees and around 1 million subscribers and growing. Today we talk to Brian all about building Scott's Cheap Flights. We ask him the ins and outs of an email list subscription program and how it works, building his team and company culture, how they navigated the pandemic in 2020 as a business built around travel, what he's learned working with a business partner, and so much more. This conversation is not only fascinating and so cool, but it's also incredibly inspiring as a business owner to think outside the box, be innovative, build a company mission and culture of honor and value, and so much more. I know I'm walking away ready to do more and do better and I know without a doubt you'll feel the same. We discuss how he scaled Scott's Cheap Flights, future areas of focus, how to find cheap airfare, mistake fares, and everything else cheap flights we could fit into an hour. Most travelers today spend hours and hours scouring the internet for good flight deals. At some point, you've been told Tuesday is the best day to buy flight tickets. You've probably found extremely cheap airfare, only to have it disappear 30 minutes later. Overall, travelers encounter many unexplainable or frustrating experiences when finding and booking flights. On today's episode I talk with Scott Keyes (FB / IG / TW), who is the Co-Founder and CEO of Scott's Cheap Flights. In our conversation, Scott helps debunk some of these rumors and explain different details, best practices and other tips for cheap flights in today's airline industry. Scott's Cheap Flights is not a travel agency or search engine, but a membership service that alerts you through email every time crazy flight deals pop up. A team of flight experts are located around the world constantly finding cheap flights. When they do find these fares, they email them to members along with departing cities, destinations, dates, how long they expect the deal to last, and how to book. To date, they've helped members save over $100 million dollars on airfare. I've received their emails for the last few months and can definitely attest to the fact they find insane deals. Scott started sharing flight deals in 2013 after finding a roundtrip deal from NYC to Milan for $130. He started sending deals to a few friends, who added their own friends, and eventually he was sending emails to around 5,000 people. He realized he had something special and decided to go full-time with Scott's Cheap Flights. Today, Scott's Cheap Flights sends deals to over 1,600,000 free and premium members.
