(Conversation recorded on January 21st, 2025)   Many of us are familiar with the problem of plastics as a distant issue in the ocean, primarily affecting fish and sea turtles. While these environmental effects are critical, the full scope of plastic's repercussions on human health and well-being is largely unknown by most people, even as the research shows alarming – and growing – adverse effects. What do we need to know about this pervasive material and how it affects the human body?  Today, Nate is joined by environmental health researchers Leo Trasande and Linda Birnbaum, as well as environmental policy advocate Christina Dixon, to discuss the harmful effects of plastic on human health and the ongoing global policy efforts to regulate the plastic and petrochemical industries. Their conversation dives into the risks of frequent plastic exposure, paths toward a world with reduced plastics use, and what it might mean for the economy if we made – or did not make – significant changes to the ways we use plastic. How can we balance the requirement for essential plastics with the urgent need to reduce our production and consumption of these toxic materials? What further unknown health effects are still in need of research - especially in the case of thousands of untested chemicals used on the market? Lastly, what is the current state of regulation on plastic production and consumption, and how can everyday citizens play a role in shaping the future of the plastic industry?    About Leo Trasande: Dr. Leo Trasande is the Jim G. Hendrick MD Professor, Director of the Division of Environmental Pediatrics, and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Pediatrics at NYU School of Medicine. He also serves on the faculty of the NYU Wagner School of Public Service and the NYU College of Global Public Health. Leo is an internationally renowned leader in environmental health. His research focuses on the impacts of chemicals on hormones in our bodies. He has also led the way in documenting the economic costs for policy makers of failing to prevent diseases of environmental origin proactively.   About Linda Birnbaum: Linda S. Birnbaum, Ph.D., D.A.B.T., A.T.S, was director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of the National Institutes of Health, and the National Toxicology Program (NTP) from 2009 to 2019. As board certified toxicologist, Linda also served as a federal scientist for 40 years, including 19 years at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), where she directed the largest division focusing on environmental health research. Birnbaum is now a Special Volunteer at NIEHS and conducts research as part of the Mechanistic Toxicology Branch. In October 2010, she was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, one of the highest honors in the fields of medicine and health.    About Christina Dixon: Christina Dixon is a campaign leader at the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) in the UK, using policy, advocacy, and corporate campaigning skills towards environmental issues. Christina currently leads the EIA's plastics treaty campaign, where she oversees a diverse and highly skilled team of legal, policy and campaigning experts combating plastic (over)production & pollution, waste trade, commercial whaling, illegal marine species trade, and bycatch.    Please note that, starting with this episode, Reality Roundtables will be released on Mondays going forward.   Show Notes and More Watch this video episode on YouTube   Want to learn the whole story of The Great Simplification? This talk presents the design and development of a custom 3D printed haptic syringe interface aimed to augment a virtual reality local anesthesia simulation (VRLA) with realistic tactile feedback. The VRLA previously used an Oculus Quest 2 head mounted device (HMD) with out of the box hand controllers to immerse students in the simulation and complete the necessary tasks. One controller (with the dominant hand) was used to perform a local anesthesia injection with a virtual hand that held a virtual syringe. This was subsequently replaced with a custom 3D printed haptic syringe to simulate physical interactions between the syringe and the environment in an effort to enhance the students' training experience. A pilot research study investigating the effectiveness of the custom haptic syringe had positive outcomes. All working parents know that “all kids get sick” is the mother of all truisms. But what do doctors and other health care providers do when they or their loved ones come down with a cold, tummy ache, or something more serious? Today, we get to be a fly on the wall for a free-wheeling conversation between physicians Marianna Shimelfarb, MD, who specializes in Integrative Family Medicine, and Mikhail “Misha” Kogan, medical director of the GW Center for Integrative Medicine and geriatrician with GW Medical Faculty Associates and the GW University Hospital. These long-time friends let loose on everything, from kids with bloody head injuries requiring sutures to one of them being recently diagnosed with Lyme disease. They talk about conventional modalities vs. integrative; and why physicians fear losing their own agency when they get sick, being subject to someone else making decisions, and more. Dr. Shimmelfarb has a passion for providing quality care with an integrative approach. She practices patient-centered care and uses her knowledge of evidence-based complementary medicine treatments in combination with her training as an allopathic physician. Dr. Shimmelfarb is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. Have you ever been told that you are not good enough? That you don’t have what it takes? This experience can lead you down a road of doubt and leave you with a false sense of your identity. There will always be people that will try to bring you down, but all it takes one person who truly believes in you to turn all of that around. It was in grade 10 that Dr. Jay Grossman’s English teacher told him that he would never amount to anything. “I felt like I got punched in the face without even knowing I was in a fight,” he recalled. It was an extreme emotional event that stayed with him to this day. The next year however, Jay went on to become the first person enrolled in his school’s externship program, all thanks to his social studies teacher who believed that he had immense potential, and took him under his wing. At the age of 19, Jay was accepted to NYU College of Dentistry. After completing a residency in Advanced Education in General Dentistry at NYU, he joined the Navy and completed a tour of duty as a Lieutenant in the Dental Corp where he received the National Defense Service Medal. Jay was also featured in major magazines as the poster boy for recruitment due to his nonprofit: Homeless Not Toothless, which has provided free dental care to over 60,000 veterans and children. He has also mentored more than 1,000 people so far during his career. Jay has received letters of commendation from President Obama, the Secretary of the Navy. and numerous members of Congress. Today, Jay is a business owner, entrepreneur, founder of the nonprofit - Homeless Not Toothless, and a selfless contributor. On this episode of the #IAmMovement podcast, Jay and I discuss how the smallest moment can impact your life in a huge way, why living in poverty is a choice, and some of his powerful reasons behind joining the Navy.

Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Dr. Mark Wolff, Morton Amsterdam Dean, and Professor, Division of Restorative Dentistry, at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine. Ira Pastor Comments: So as frequent listeners of the ideaXme show know, we spend a lot of time talking about the theme of "healthy aging", and the reality that aging, and related biological changes associated with aging, occur across all of the body's cells, tissues, and organs, and these changes affect all structure and function of the body, including the teeth and gums, and as such, oral health is the focus of our show today. The underlying processes of biological aging can dramatically affect oral health and many of the specific changes that occur over time in our bodies as we age (such as cells renewing at a slower rate, tissues become thinner and less elastic, bones become less dense and strong, our immune system become weaker, such that infection can occur more quickly and wound healing takes longer), can have major impact in the oral cavity (affecting tissue and bone in the mouth), as well as trickle down effects on the rest of the body. Oral health problems in older adults include, but are not limited to: untreated tooth decay, gum disease, tooth loss, oral cancer, as well as exacerbated chronic disease associated with various co-morbid conditions and physiologic changes associated with aging (e.g., hypertension, diabetes mellitus). Dr. Mark Wolff: Dr. Mark Wolff, DDS, PhD, is the Morton Amsterdam Dean, and Professor, Division of Restorative Dentistry, at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine. With a Doctor of Dental Surgery, and PhD, in Oral Biology and Pathology, Dr. Wolff helps lead the school to develop policy, set research agenda and design community treatment programs that serve the needs of a wide variety of patient populations. Prior to joining UPenn, Dr. Wolff was Professor and Chair of the Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care, Associate Dean for Pre-doctoral Clinical Education, and Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations at NYU College of dentistry, the largest dental education institution in the United States. At NYU he designed, developed, and implemented an extensive curriculum in caries risk assessment and also designed dental information systems to assist dental schools in monitoring the risk of the entire dental patient population. Dr. Wolff has completed numerous international research and oral health assessment programs and has been a lifelong advocate and dental provider for individuals with physical, intellectual, and developmental disabilities of all ages. Dr. Wolff has served as the principal or co-principal investigator on multiple bench top and clinical research projects, investigating dental caries, novel re-mineralizing agents, dental erosion, periodontal disease, dental materials, and dental hypersensitivity. Dr. Wolff has published over 100 scientific papers, text chapters, and edited multiple textbooks, lectures worldwide and is a frequent consultant to the industry and has been the principal or co-principal investigator on many industrial and National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research programs. On this episode we will hear from Dr. Wolff about: His background; what interested him in the field of dental medicine, academic research, and a little bit of his path to becoming dean of one of the world's largest dental schools. Major issues in the field of geriatric dental patient care. Major issues related to the oral microbiota (microbiome) and connection to chronic disease. Future technologies for the care / reversion of dental caries. Credits: Ira Pastor interview video, text, and audio. When you are told by your teachers and people you look up to "You'll never graduate" or "You will never make it in this profession", you are left with nothing but a broken dream. When your back is against the wall and everyone doubts you, that's when you know how much your dream actually means to you. Only if it means everything, you will get up, shake it off and do it anyway. "They told me I couldn't, that's why I did!" In this intimate and up-close interview with Dr. Dean Vafiadis, a celebrity dentist (prosthodontist) in Manhattan and an associate professor at NYU College of Dentistry, author, speaker and innovator, Dean reveals the secret to his success and happiness. He explains how adversities have always been the fuel that helped him succeed and challenged him to come out even stronger. When many give up because of fear of failure, he looks at the future and knows that the only option is to make things better. I call him the "Steve Jobs" of Dentistry because he thinks differently!
