Then, WMMT's Sydney Boles brings us an interview with Bella Black about a project that gave young people in Letcher County, KY cameras to document potential causes of lung disease. And finally, Parker Hobson brings us the second in his series on diabetes and prediabetes in eastern Kentucky. WMMT reporter Sydney Boles brings us two recent stories: first about the struggle for clean drinking water in Wyoming County, WV in a community with lots of Mountain Top Removal mines, and then about a new LGBTQ+ safe space in Pikeville, KY. In the second half of this episode, we bring you two youth-produced stories made during the 2007 Appalachian Media Institute's Audio Lab. "Aunt Carol" celebrates a dear family member, and "Bluegrass Loving Girl" explores what it was like for a young woman to love bluegrass even when her peers didn't.
Research investigator Michael Hendryx studies mountaintop removal, an explosive type of surface coal mining used in Appalachia that comes with unexpected health hazards. In this data-packed talk, Hendryx presents his research and tells the story of the pushback he's received from the coal industry, advocating for the ethical obligation scientists have to speak the truth.
Over five hundred mountains in West Virginia have been destroyed because of new mining techniques used by coal companies in the Appalachians.

Mountaintop Removal as practiced in Appalachia entails the rapid removal of anything above a coal seam via blasting and excavation, generally into the adjacent valley. The coal is subsequently removed via large dump trucks to be washed with volumes of water and chemicals in preparation for shipping via train to a distribution point or final user. Core samples are drilled to find the location of the coal seams after which the land is cleared. Large holes are then drilled to accept explosives which loosens and fractures the earth covering the coal. That “overburden” is then dumped in the most convenient spot to allow for the collection of the coal.
Jennie Young is my guest on Religion For Life. She is a concerned citizen talking candidly about the possibility of losing Tennessee's signature mountains due to mountain top removal strip mining unless we act. Read an article about her in the Elizabethton Star. This is the mountain top removal action packet, Not One More Mountain.
John Grim, Professor at the Yale Schools of Forestry and Divinity, discusses the devastation caused by mountaintop removal and employment in the coal mining industry.

Larry Gibson lives on Kayford Mountain in West Virginia. Most of the mountains around him have been destroyed by Mountain Top Removal, a destructive and dangerous type of coal mining. Larry is fighting to save the mountains and the people who live in them. We visited his mountain in June, and recorded him talking about his struggle. Produced by Ruth Kodish Eskind, Eric Yates & Lawrence Jones Mahoney.
