Black Queer Flesh: Rejecting Subjectivity in the African American Novel (U Minnesota Press, 2021) reinterprets key African American novels from the Harlem Renaissance to Black Modernism to contemporary literature, showing how authors have imagined a new model of Black queer selfhood. African American authors blame liberal humanism's model of subjectivity for double consciousness and find that liberal humanism's celebration of individual autonomy and agency is a way of disciplining Black queer lives. These authors thus reject subjectivity in search of a new mode of the self that Alvin J. Henry names “Black queer flesh”—a model of selfhood that is collective, plural, fluctuating, and deeply connected to the Black queer past. Henry begins with early twentieth-century authors such as Jessie Redmon Fauset and James Weldon Johnson. These authors adapted the Bildungsroman, the novel of self-formation, to show African Americans gaining freedom and agency by becoming a liberal, autonomous subjects. These authors, however, discovered that the promise of liberal autonomy held out by the Bildungsroman was yet another tool of antiblack racism. As a result, they tentatively experimented with repurposing the Bildungsroman to throw off subjectivity and its attendant double consciousness. In contrast, Nella Larsen, Henry shows, was the first author to fully reject subjectivity. In Quicksand and Passing, Larsen invented a new genre showing her queer characters—characters whose queerness already positioned them on the margins of subjectivity—escaping subjectivity altogether. Using Ralph Ellison's archival drafts, Henry then powerfully rereads Invisible Man, revealing that the protagonist as a queer, disabled character taught by the novel's many other queer, disabled characters to likewise seek a selfhood beyond subjectivity. Although Larsen and Ellison sketch glimpses of this selfhood beyond subjectivity, only Saidiya Hartman's Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments shows a protagonist fully inhabiting Black queer flesh—a new mode of selfhood that is collective, plural, always evolving, and no longer alienated from the black past. Black Queer Flesh is an original and necessary contribution to Black literary studies, offering new ways to understand and appreciate the canonical texts and far more. In this episode, Ken, Iggy, Michael all sample some of a Wisconsin treasure, J. Henry & Sons Distillery. They treated one of our own, as they do to most all guests to a splendid tour of the distillery and welcome center. Music by Adam Whitehead - https://www.facebook.com/adamwhiteheadmusic Email us at - thewhiskeyfriends@gmail.com J. Henry & Sons Distillery in Wisconsin is a hidden gem in the world of bourbon and whiskey. Nestled in the heart of Dane County, Wisconsin, this family-owned distillery has a unique story and a commitment to producing high-quality spirits. Here's a review of the distillery and its products: Distillery Experience: Walking into the J. Henry & Sons Distillery feels like stepping into a rustic, welcoming farmhouse with a charming bar set up in what was probably once the living room or kitchen. The staff's warm and inviting demeanor immediately makes you feel at home. The fireplace in the corner and the small field outside give it an authentic rural charm. The fact that you're offered a drink as soon as you walk in sets a fantastic tone for the visit. Product Range: J. Henry & Sons offers a range of products, with their base offering being a 5-year straight bourbon whiskey. What sets them apart is their commitment to using high-quality grains, including proprietary blue corn, which they are transitioning to for all their whiskey offerings. Their products are known for their well-balanced flavors and an approachable profile. Specialty Bottles: The distillery also offers specialty bottles that are finished in different barrels. The "Belafonte Reserve" is finished in cognac barrels, and the "Laflopp" is finished in Armagnac barrels. These unique finishes impart delightful flavors and depth to their bourbons. The Belafonte is known for its caramel, vanilla, and butterscotch notes, while the Laflopp offers a fruitier, aromatic experience. Quality and Craftsmanship: What's truly impressive about J. Henry & Sons is their commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Their whiskey showcases the influence of Wisconsin's extreme weather, with the fluctuations allowing the spirit to soak deeply into the oak staves. This contributes to the unique and delicious flavor profiles of their products. The flavors are rich, well-balanced, and a testament to the dedication of the distillery team. Availability and Pricing: While their base offering is reasonably priced, specialty bottles like the Belafonte and Laflopp can be a bit harder to find and are often priced higher. The quality justifies the price point, though, making them excellent choices for special occasions or a treat for yourself. Recommendation: If you're a bourbon enthusiast or just someone looking to explore the world of whiskey, J. Henry & Sons is worth a visit. Their welcoming distillery, flavorful products, and the unique influence of Wisconsin's climate on their whiskey make it an excellent destination for any whiskey lover. The Belafonte Reserve and Laflopp are highly recommended for those seeking a premium sipping experience. In summary, J. Henry & Sons Distillery is a testament to the passion and craftsmanship that goes into producing high-quality bourbon and whiskey. The distillery's welcoming atmosphere, unique product offerings, and commitment to excellence make it a must-visit destination for whiskey enthusiasts. Their dedication to quality and exploration of flavor profiles set them apart in the world of craft distilleries.

In 2016, Evan Ungar from Canada set the highest vertical jump Guinness World Record at 63.5 inches. Will Tim surpass that milestone? If this week's results are any indicator, I would say yes, definitely. He need only add 35 and a quarter inches, which, to me, is child's play. If I wanted to set the vertical jump record I could also do it, but I have more pressing concerns to attend to. For example, watching Claire Saffitz make gourmet Tater Tots. I was also busy reading Robert Coover's 1968 novel The Universal Baseball Association, Inc., J. Henry Waugh, Prop. It's lucky that I did that because on this episode of the podcast, we discuss the book in full, and even go so far as to discuss the themes of the book including: The power of fiction/ the role of the author Postmodern metafiction Reflection on age/time passing The nature of God & the development of religion obsession/addiction Yep, another light-hearted romp through he world of the Tater Tot

Welcome to Episode 151 of the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen podcast.    This week's episode features the winner of our inaugural Landscape Photography Conservation Award, J Henry Fair. If you are not familiar with Henry's work, you are in for a real treat. His most recent project involved photographing the impacts of consumerism from an airplane, including impacts on the land from mining, oil and gas extraction, and more. The results of this work are encapsulated in his 200-page book, "Industrial Scars." Henry sent me a copy of his book and I was absolutely amazed by the beauty and horror portrayed in his images. It truly is a magnificent book.    We covered a wide variety of topics, including: Aerial photography techniques. The environmental crisis. The politicization of the environment. Photography as a tool for social change.  What photographers can do to make a difference in this world. Henry is offering a discount on his book for patrons of the podcast, so if you are interested in purchasing it, head to Patreon to get the link to that discount. I'm always looking at ways to provide value to the people that financially support the podcast on Patreon, so I hope it helps! Thank you for your support.   Before we get started,  I wanted to let you know about a special opportunity to meet me at the upcoming Nightscaper Conference in Kanab, Utah from May 20 to May 22. If you listened to my recent episode with Royce Bair, you'll know that the conference is going to be amazing. Royce has assembled the world's best night photographers for an incredible experience that surely won't disappoint you. I'll also be doing some fun podcasting and panel discussions at the conference. If you're interested, check it out. Also, you can use the code "PAYNE100" for a $100 dollar discount on the conference. I hope to see you there!   And lastly, just be warned, Henry is opinionated. Enjoy.

Mountaintop Removal as practiced in Appalachia entails the rapid removal of anything above a coal seam via blasting and excavation, generally into the adjacent valley. The coal is subsequently removed via large dump trucks to be washed with volumes of water and chemicals in preparation for shipping via train to a distribution point or final user. Core samples are drilled to find the location of the coal seams after which the land is cleared. Large holes are then drilled to accept explosives which loosens and fractures the earth covering the coal. That “overburden” is then dumped in the most convenient spot to allow for the collection of the coal.
