In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with renowned bassist, composer, and producer Viktor Krauss for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation about his musical path, creative process, and the many collaborations that have shaped his career.Viktor Krauss is one of contemporary music's most versatile and respected bassists. He's played with an astonishing array of artists, including Lyle Lovett, Bill Frisell, Robert Plant, and Alison Krauss. Equally at home in jazz, folk, rock, and beyond, Viktor brings a deep sense of melody, texture, and feel to everything he touches. In addition to his work as a sideman, he's also released his solo projects, blending cinematic soundscapes with expressive songwriting. This episode is a must-listen for fans of genre-defying musicianship, creative collaboration, and the subtle art of supporting a song from the low end.Music from the Episode:For A Good Time (Viktor Krauss)Pipe Down (Bill Frisell)Big Shoe (Bill Frisell)Penguins (Lyle Lovett)Grit Lap (Viktor Krauss)Big Log (Viktor Krauss)Pinky Ring (Viktor Krauss)Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Viktor Krauss)Trouble With My Lover (Robert Plant & Alison Krauss)Learn more about Viktor and his work at viktorkrauss.com.Thank you for listening! Randy Hamilton has brought so much to The Flood's table in the past dozen years. As the late Joe Dobbs used to say, Randy's bass is “the heartbeat of the band.”In addition, Randy's vocals — whether harmonizing or taking the lead — have become a definitive ingredient in The Flood's sound. And nothing demonstrates that better than a tune from this week's rehearsal, captured in this video by band manager Pamela Bowen.About the SongAs reported earlier, “When You Say Nothing at All,” the 1988 composition by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz, has been a hit for no fewer than four times.— Keith Whitley was first to take it to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in late 1988. — Then seven years later, Allison Krauss's version was her first solo Top-10 country hit. — A year after that, Irish singer Francis Black made the song her third Irish Top 10 single. — And that brought the song to the attention of Irish pop singer Ronan Keating, whose 1999 version was his first solo single and a No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand. But to this day, “When You Say Nothing at All” is always associated first with Keith Whitley. The Ashland, Ky., native's recording entered the Hot Country Singles chart on Sep. 17, 1988, at a modest No. 61. Then it gradually rose to the top, where it stayed for two weeks at the end of the year. “Keith did a great job singin' that song," co-composer Schlitz told author Tom Roland. "He truly sang it from the heart.”When Krauss covered the song with her group Union Station in 1995, it was for a tribute album to Whitley, and suddenly the Overstreet-Schlitz composition was topping the charts again. In the latest episode, we discuss Allen Toussaint's great story-song "Fortune Teller", a fave of garage bands throughout the 60s. Benny Spellman authored the original version and it has that nice New Orleans swampiness - piano, clave, horns, and great backing vocals. What a gumbo! The second rendition is a cute one from the very early Rolling Stones, who add a Orientalist riff and harmonica to their arrangement -& Charlie Watt's drumming keeps the song chugging along nicely. The third version comes from Tony Jackson & The Vibrations: TJ had just left The Searchers because he wanted to have a tougher sound - and this riff proves it! The vocals are too Mersey, though. A reprieve from the rockin' sounds and a return to the horn-y and piano-drive feel of the original from Alabama's The Del-Rays is up next. It's punchy and groovy and it's the best "Spellman twist" since the original, but the vocal needs more swagger - bring back Mick Jagger! Some Australian troglodytes called The Throb had an Antipodean hit in '66, it's Stones-y, nuff said! We end the spell with a recent-ish number by Robert Plant & Allison Krauss: it's a lot different than the others, but Erik quibbles with the mid-aughtie's production. Ba ba ba ba!!
Blake Christiana is the creative force behind this relentlessly touring band that has shared the stage with Dwight Yoakam, Marty Stuart, and Allison Krauss.

Dobro master Rob Ickes joins me on the show this week. Rob was kind enough to drop in to the Henhouse to hang for a while, talk and even play a little bit. Rob is one of those players that is so good on one particular instrument that he's managed to carve out a really impressive career being dedicated to just one thing. And that one thing is the dobro, which is kind of a specific instrument - It's somewhat married to bluegrass music, but a very few players, and that list includes Rob and Jerry Douglas (and maybe one or two others), have managed to bring it to wider audiences through sessions and performances outside of that genre, while maintaining their standing at the highest level within it. Rob grew up in California, but moved to Nashville in the early 90's and really established himself as a pre-eminent player with a long stint in the acclaimed bluegrass band Blue Highway. He left the band in 2015 to focus on his duo with the incredible singer and guitarist Trey Hensley, who was on this show a couple of years ago. Rob's impressive session history includes working with artists like Merle Haggard, Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Peter Rowan, Tony Rice, Charlie Haden, Dolly Parton, Allison Krauss, Little Feat, Patty Loveless and many more. And while the session world keeps calling, Rob has never wanted to solely become a studio player, so he keeps busy on the road as much as he can, and the duo with Trey is incredibly busy now. Their latest release as Rob and Trey is called “Living In A Song”. On top of all that, Rob continues to teach and run his successful “Resosummit” each year here in Nashville. You can get info on all of Rob's activities as well as his tour dates with Trey Hensley over at robickes.com - Enjoy my conversation with Rob Ickes! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. “The Wexford Carol” is heralded as Ireland's oldest recorded Christmas carol. It's been performed by world class cellist Yo-Yo Ma and American country music star Allison Krauss. Yet, the history of this carol is difficult to trace. We know that it was passed down in the oral tradition for hundreds of years. Some scholars claim it originated in the 16th century, while others believe it has even older roots in the 12th century. However, it was not until the 1920s that a certain music scholar and organist by the name of W.H. Grattan Flood plucked this jewel of a carol from the obscurities of history and preserved it for posterity. But where did Grattan Flood first hear this carol? And how did he manage to transform the song from folk legend to international sensation? Host Maggi Van Dorn travels to Enniscorthy, a small hillside town in County Wexford, Ireland, where Flood first put the carol to paper. She speaks with Flood's grand-daughter, Margaret Franklin, along with famed novelist and Enniscorthy native, Colm Tóibín. And Hark! welcomes back the illustrious liturgical music composer, Christopher Walker, to unwrap the beauty of “The Wexford Carol” and its likely roots. From its founding in 1970, Rounder Records was different. What started as the passion project for three New England music lovers who wanted to preserve and proselytize folk and roots music, eventually grew into a record label with an eclectic catalogue featuring long-forgotten bands, promising musicians such as George Thorogood and Allison Krauss, and even an album just called “Hollerin'” (which is exactly what it says it is). Along the way, Rounder Records became indispensable in transforming American folk music. In this episode, we learn more about the history of Rounder Records from music historian David Menconi, author of the new book Oh, Didn't They Ramble: Rounder Records and the Transformation of American Roots Music (UNC Press, 2023). You can hear David Menconi's playlist of key tracks from the Rounder catalogue on Spotify by clicking here. This episode was edited by Gary Fletcher.
This week, host Jason Jefferies is joined by former NC Piedmont Laureate David Menconi, who discusses his new book Oh, Didn't They Ramble: Rounder Records and the Transformation of American Roots Music, which is published by our friends at UNC Press. Topics of conversation include IBMA and Wide Open Bluegrass, the Union Grove Old Time Fiddler's Convention, Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, the connection between music and politics, starting a record label in the 1960s vs. in 2023, concert going fashion, Russian literature, James Michener, the Grateful Dead, and much more! And if ALL OF THAT weren't enough, he's become renowned for his work in metaphysics and human potential exploration, with his #1 best selling book entitled, “The Thought Exchange: Overcoming Our Resistance to Living a Sensational Life”. A new 20th anniversary edition of the book was just released. The book formed the basis for a critically acclaimed documentary film directed by Usher Morgan, called “The Thought Exchange”. Since then, our guest has written 4 more books, entitled, “The Healing Power of Negative Thoughts and Uncomfortable Sensations”, “It's all Inside”, “We Can Be Kind – Healing Our World One Kindness at a Time”, and “Help is on the Way”. Season 6 comes to an end this week with my guest - the incomparable Jerry Douglas, who has re-invented the concept of the Dobro over the last 50 years, while also working as a bandleader and acclaimed producer. There are select few musicians on the planet who have undeniably redefined their instrument and the way it is approached in modern music, but Jerry is definitely one of them. He has had an incredibly prolific career, starting in the mid 70's with stints in The Country Gentlemen, the groundbreaking JD Crowe and the New South, Boone Creek and with the incredible Buck White. Soon after establishing himself in the bluegrass world with those groups, he started playing on records as a session musician and became not only the most recorded Dobro player in history, but pretty darn high up there with anyone on any instrument. The number of records he's played on is somewhere seemingly about 1600. He's been nominated for 32 grammies, won 14 of them, and is a 10-time IBMA winner of dobro player of the year. His production credits are amazing too, and that really came to the fore with Allison Krauss and Union Station, not to mention his recent work with John Hiatt and Molly Tuttle. Jerry is very active with his own incredible band, and continues to produce and tour seemingly non-stop. He's been involved in alot of technical Dobro innovations as well, which are really interesting. We're going to get into all of that and more here today, and meanwhile you can keep up with his latest projects and touring at jerrydouglas.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca
Jay Bellerose is a Los Angeles-based touring and studio veteran with an approach and aesthetic all his own. His passion for all things old and gritty has resulted in a personality behind the drums that has become sought after by artists and producers including Robert Plant & Allison Krauss, T-Bone Burnett, Bonnie Raitt, Ray LeMontagne, In this episode, Jay talks about: The Slingerland "Rolling Bomber" set he plays on the Plant/Krauss tour, and how the sound is captured Having to find and fight for his aesthetic amidst the LA scene How singers move, and how drummers can recognize and respond to that How the Plant/Krauss project is separate and distinct from Robert or Allison's individual history or work Playing in Molly Miller's trio with his wife, Jennifer Condos on bass The deceptive challenge of simple instrumental music Keeping his schedule intentionally sparse when he's home in LA
It had been an unproductive day for songwriters Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz, and this pair was unaccustomed to dry spells. After all, together and individually, Overstreet and Schlitz had written dozens of Top 10 hits, had won multiple Grammys and each frequently had been named country music's Songwriter of the Year.Still, this day in 1988 was frustrating. Hours of guitar strumming had produced zero new ideas."Then, as we tried to find another way to say nothing, we came up with this song," Overstreet later told author Ace Collins. Soon came the line that would lead to the title: “You say it best when you say nothing at all.”It was something, this particular nothing. Initially, though, Overstreet said, they thought the song was OK, but just… well, nothing special. But that was before the late Keith Whitley heard it. Keith loved it, and, moreover, he was not going to let it get away. Not like the last time. Earlier, Whiley had recorded a different Overstreet-Schlitz creation — “On the Other Hand” — only to watch it become a No. 1 hit for a competing artist, singer Randy Travis. Whitley said he was determined not to let "When You Say Nothing at All" meet the same fate. And it didn't. In fact, to date, “When You Say Nothing at All” has been a hit for four different performers. Whitley, of course, was first to take it to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in late 1988. Then seven years later, Allison Krauss's version was her first solo Top-10 country hit. A year after that, Irish singer Francis Black made the song her third Irish Top 10 single. And that brought the song to the attention of Irish pop singer Ronan Keating, whose 1999 version was his first solo single and a No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand. But to this day, “When You Say Nothing at All” is always associated first with Whitley. "It's a freak thing," Krauss told The Los Angeles Times in March 1995. "It's kinda ticklin' us all. We haven't had anything really chart before. At all. Isn't it funny, though? We didn't know what's goin' on.... The office said, 'Hey, it's charting,' and we're like, 'Huh?'" The recording was named the Country Music Association's Single of the Year and even hit the big screen when the rendition was used in the 1999 movie “The Other Sister.”(By the way, during the time when Krauss' version was on the charts, Mike Cromwell, production director at Milwaukee's WMIL-FM, concocted a duet merging elements of her version with Whitley's original. This post-mortem "duet" garnered national attention, though it was never released commercially.)Our Take on the TuneDanny and Randy brought us this song just a couple of weeks ago, and in no time it became a rehearsal night favorite. Here's our latest take on the tune, with Randy doing the honors on the vocals and everybody taking turns on the solos.Meanwhile….If this has got you in the mood for more Floody goodness, you can take a spin through other tunes that have visited the band's rehearsal space lately. Maggie Poulos is a fascinating example of a talented musician, who is also deeply embedded in the business side of the music world. She's fronted numerous bands such as the all-female NYC trio The Crushes. And as the founder of Mixtape Media, Maggie has done PR for such high-profile clients as Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, Cake, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Duncan Sheik. Since moving from New York back home to the Philadelphia suburbs, she has become the go-to publicist of the Philly indie rock scene, working with Mo Louda and the Humble, Don McCloskey, and some band known as the Caulfields.. Most recently she landed some amazing press for a 1-woman theatrical production called “Queen of Fishtown.” She's a great conversationalist with strongly held beliefs and a passion for that thing called rock 'n' roll, simultaneously nostalgic for the MTV-era musical icons she grew up loving, yet constantly on the lookout for great new artists and ways to help them succeed in the musical landscape that we're all facing today. During our extended lunch at Nudy's Cafe in Paoli, PA (where we were kicked out, having lost track of time for close to hour after the place was technically closed), we chatted about songwriting, politics, and presidential assassination attempts, among other things. ❤

This week on the show is the great mandolin player, singer and songwriter Sierra Hull. Sierra is a monster player, and while she's still really young, she's been making records of her own for over 15 years now. The latest one, called “25 Trips” came out right around the pandemic, so her touring was curtailed for a while, but she's back at it now in full force, playing with her band and also with Cory Wong and Bela Fleck, being a major part of Bela's “My Bluegrass Heart” album and shows earlier this year. I was really interested in talking to her about that because I can't imagine how crazy that must be to be sitting in a room full of your heros that you grew up listening to and learning from and suddenly they're your peers and you're right in the mix with all of them. In the bluegrass world, that project doesn't get any heavier - Jerry Douglas, Bryan Sutton, Sam Bush, Chris Thile, Noam Pikelny, Stuart Duncan, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle - they're all involved, and it's a great album. Sierra has made some great solo albums with Allison Krauss and Bela Fleck producing, and on the latest one, “25 Trips”, she's co-producing with a killer engineer named Shani Gandhi. It's definitely rooted in bluegrass, but steps out into some more experimental territory as well with some innovative sounds and production ideas. The crew on this album includes Justin Moses, Viktor Krauss, Bryan Sutton, Paul Franklin, Jano Rix and lots more. So we got to talk about how she approaches making music, and all about how she prepares as a side-person for some of the heavy gigs she's involved in these days.Sierra is constantly out on tour and you can keep up with what she's doing and where to see her at: sierrahull.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca
Riley Baugus grew up In the Blue Ridge of Allegheny County North Carolina with a family and in a community of Old-Time music fanatics. Though when he was ready to start playing banjo, his family wasn't in a spot to buy him one, he and his dad were able to drum up some DIY instructions from the Foxfire book series and make one of their own. Riley then became entrenched in what he found to be the soul of old time music, which are the vast array of stories told by the songs. While Riley's discography features only two solo endeavors playing banjo, he has collaborated and contributed both as player and vocalist to more than 20 other recordings, making guest appearances on albums by the likes of Willie Nelson, Allison Krauss and Robert Plant In the holler where John Haywood grew up in Floyd County, KY, he was surrounded by family, aunts and uncles and mostly older boy cousins who worked out their testosterone on sports and roughhousing. John found art, in the form of painting and drawing. Heavy metal music grabbed the attention of his middle school brain, and his parents got him a guitar at age 12. John's journey is a fascinating one, especially what brought him to the banjo and then back to the mountains, in Knott County where he lives now with his wife and kids and also owns and operates a Tattoo shop in Whitesburg. Riley Baugus and John Haywood know each other, have played together, and also know the history of their instruments and the tunes they play and sing. We can't wait to have them both here to share their music with you. That's the first program of Red Barn Radio's 21st Season.
Bales Farm Cookbook, Lard, and Marshall Bales Egg Program Today, we are setting the table with news about an excellent cookbook from Bales Farms written by Aliceson Bales. She has been a visitor several times on this show before. Aliceson, her husband Barry Bales, and their 15-year-old son Marshall own and operate Bales Farms in Mosheim, Tennessee. A 6th generation family farm. And Barry is a multi-grammy award winner, having played with Allison Krauss and Union Station for thirty-plus years. Today Aliceson will share information with us about lard from pasture-raised animals. The differences between lard, how to render lard, some nutritional benefits in lard, and cooking applications. Marshal Bales tells us about his egg program that he runs on the farm and has for several years. Marshall is 15 years old. Dolly Parton wrote the forward for this brand new cookbook that Aliceson wrote, and I want to share that with you. And, Aliceson shares a recipe from her new cookbook with us for white cheddar pimento cheese. She suggests pulling this out to handle the crowd when they first show up at the house.

The 2009 Grammys were weird as hell. Matt and Tim cover that weirdness in great depth before digging into the especially weird Best Album category. Robert Plant and Allison Krauss won that year, and Ne-Yo was there too. But Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III gets the Spin nod here and man is he as odd as ever. After Weezy discussion, Matt goes fully in his bag and gets to talk about Radiohead's In Rainbows and, finally, Coldplay and Viva La Vida. He's got an uphill battle with Tim, tune in to see if he can pull off that Coldplay best exemplifies the 2009 of it all.
Sierra Hull is a legend in the making. A superb and accomplished musician, she's shared the stage with everyone from Bela Fleck to Allison Krauss to Corey Wong. I was already a fan, and appreciated her music, but I was unprepared for how completely she'd blow me away with her insight and humility. Not only an absolute shredder on the mandolin, she's an accomplished songwriter and distinctive singer with no pretense. Down to earth with a sharp sense of humor, Sierra made for an absolutely ideal guest for the Happy Hour. Musicians Robert Plant and Alison Krauss will soon embark on their first tour together in 13 years supporting their album "Raise the Roof." They join us. The Austin music community mourns Daniel Sahad, lead singer of the popular band Nane, who has died at the age of 29. Austin's EMS union and City officials are at odds over contract renegotiations - 26 medics have quit since the beginning of the year over forced overtime and low pay, especially for EMS workers early in their careers. The Austin Independent School District is set to grant pay raises to teachers and classified staff, but is also planning to cut hundreds of other jobs, including support staff for special education and libraries, while facing a record setting state recapture payment of almost 800 million dollars - the Austin American-Statesman has an explanation for that great big bill. Feral hogs, once thought to be a strictly rural problem, have begun encroaching into North Austin. Meanwhile, vampire bats have begun threatening to cross into Texas from Mexico. A downtown redevelopment that threatened to demolish several bars in the traditionally LGTBQ-friendly district on 4th Street may include plans for some of those establishments to be preserved. The nightclub space at South Congress and East Riverside, home only to interesting wall murals for several years, is soon to house a new establishment from the management of Hotel Vegas and Rainey Street's Reina. Robert Plant and Allison Krauss set a date for this fall at the new Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Park - tickets go on sale this Friday. A survey of America's most dynamic cities, based on recent employment growth, density of startup activity, average income among other factors has found Austin #7, the only Texas city in the top 25.. And a chance of severe weather on Tuesday is followed by high fire danger on Wednesday.
Charissa is a storyteller - and the best stories are ones that don't shy away from honesty. The Burlington, Ontario singer has been honing her thoughtful, meditative approach to songwriting since she was a kid, combining lush, flowing arrangements with earthy Americana and laidback soul to create a sound that is uniquely her own. Music was a constant in her home growing up, and after singing along to hits by Queen, Allison Krauss, Whitney Houston, Stevie Nicks, and Blue Rodeo before she hit age 10, her parents decided to sign her up for vocal lessons where she further developed her passion for music and later started to learn to play the guitar. Charissa has found a sound that suits her authentic, reflective songs and is ready to bare her soul as she puts the finishing touches on her new upcoming EP. The compelling new single “People Like You” has been released via Coalition Music. “People Like You” is an acoustic track that reminds listeners that even when times are rough, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, and likely someone waiting there to help you out of the dark.
Paul Overstreet is a two-time Grammy Award winning, country music singer-songwriter. Not only writing hits for himself, Paul has also penned #1 songs for fellow country acts, including Randy Travis, Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney, Keith Whitley, Allison Krauss, Tanya Tucker, Ronnie Milsap, and George Jones. In 2018, Paul released his latest album, Somewhere in the Caribbean. He received the TRMA award in October of 2020 for "Song of the Year" for the title cut. His new single, "Wine, Sunshine, and An Ocean" was just released this fall and will be followed with his 2nd "Beach" CD.
September 29, 2021: Whirling fiercely in the wake of wildfires, fear-induced headlines and a pandemic in its path was the too-real tornado that struck Nashville in March 2020. Admittedly shaken up by the storm, Folk-Americana singer/songwriter Calista Garcia snapped out of fear by turning to music… specifically, “Banana Pancakes” by Jack Johnson. As howling winds have continued over the past year, Calista has kept her calm by tapping back into this feeling through renewed awareness of the beauty that remains. On nature walks by her house, for example, she has come to notice how the canopies of leaves wave hello as she walks by; it is from this tender place, she has created a musical world to reflect what she has witnessed. Lending her lyrics now to listeners, Calista Garcia's “A Beautiful World” EP, out October 29th, 2021, provides refuge through the power of rose-colored perspective. “I created ‘A Beautiful World' to be an expression of radical optimism,” Calista shares. “Optimism, not because life is full of sunshine and rainbows, but rather in spite of how tough it can be... I think holding knowledge of the bad and still believing good can prevail is the bravest thing we can do.” As she has accessed hope through songwriting, Calista has found herself writing the EP in solitude from safe places like the park benches nearby, her piano and the floor of her bedroom. Notably, the only co-write on the EP, “After You're Gone,” came from a Zoom collaboration with Rachel Weisbart and Patrick Oberstaedt of the Gender Gnomes; speaking to the loss of family members during the pandemic, this song has already moved listeners to tears including composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa. Produced by Buddy Speir and Calista Garcia at 38 North Studio, “A Beautiful World” was engineered by Sean Russell (Damien & Stephen Marley, Allison Krauss, Bruno Mars), mixed by Grammy Award Winner Jim Scott of Plyrz Studios (The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Sting, Foo Fighters) and mastered by Grammy Award Winner Richard Dodd (Dixie Chicks, Tom Petty, Boz Scaggs). Featured musicians include Calista Garcia (vocals, acoustic, electric and resonator guitar, harmonica, Wirlitzer electric piano), Buddy Speir (acoustic & electric guitar, Wurliter electric piano, percussion), Harrison Finks (Hammond B3 organ, piano), Eric Scott (bass, backing vocals), Ben Tufts (drums, percussion), Denise Garcia (backing vocals) and Jim Scott (percussion). Without question, Calista Garcia's fiercely-hopeful disposition has continued to propel her music career forward. In spite of its challenges, 2021 has managed to be a hallmark year as Calista was recently nominated Chris Austin Songwriting Finalist at MerleFest, playing a summer of live shows alongside Bad Cameo and as a part of Show X's tour with The Last Real Circus. Previous releases include her critically-acclaimed debut EP “Wild Woman” (2019) which was selected in the 2020 Independent Music Awards for “Best Roots/Country EP,” recognized by the International Music Awards (IAMA), International Songwriting Competition (ISC) and the Mid-Atlantic Songwriting Contest (MASC). In addition, Calista Garcia's extensive musical history includes her title as 2020's National YoungArts Gold Winner in Voice/Singer-Songwriter, 2021 Alicia Key's She is the Music Foundation Songwriting Fellow, 2020 Johnny Mercer Songwriting Project Fellow, 2017-18 Berklee Performance Showcase Winner, 2017 Bernard Ebbs Young Songwriter of the Year and two-time Grammy Foundation Young Songwriter Program Artist. As Calista continues to shine light onstage, tour plans continue with an upcoming show at The Birchmere alongside the renowned Rick Wakeman of “Yes” on October 24th, 2021. In Calista's words, “My greatest wish is that this song helps you as a listener let go of your fears, and feel a little freer from your hangups. This really is a beautiful world we get to live in.” -https://www.themarketingmixtape.com/pressrelease-abeautifulworld --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loveletterstovirginia/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/loveletterstovirginia/support

Military Coup. We didn't need to rule the world, we just needed to the stop the mayhem in our own backyard. But one time or another it will come to an end. In our not to distant future this country will feel a shock never before felt and our military will take over the running of this country. Repayment of our government's debt won't happen, resulting in world wide bankruptcies. Failed attempts to stop inflation will bring about a collapse of the government bringing our military to suspend the Constitution. Countless musicians of far lesser accomplishment have probably made similar statements regarding their own personal creative process, but when the confession comes from John Waite – whose been successfully writing, recording and performing some of the most listenable, enduring and appreciated popular music for more than 35 years – one cannot help but both recognize and marvel at the shimmering legacy of this British born rock star. The ride began when Waite was tapped as bassist and lead vocalist for the Babys who rocketed to Top 20 chart positions with a pair of infections hits, “Isn't it Time” from the band's sophomore LP, Broken Heart in 1977 and the monster ballad, “Every Time I Think of You” off 1978's Head First. But it was the album's rhythmically aggressive and seductive title track where fans got their first glimpse of the authentic John Waite, a no-holds-barred rock n' roll performer devoted heart and soul to live performance and making sure every fan in the audience left the concert hall just as elated and exhausted as the band they'd paid to see. After John Lennon's assassination, December 9, 1980, a bizarre thing happened during one of those furious Baby's performances when John was pulled from the stage by an overzealous fan during an encore. The freak event seriously injured his knee and the group disbanded shortly thereafter. From the ashes of the Baby's, however, rose an abundant and prodigious solo career, ignited by the well-received release, Ignition, that featured the single, “Change,” which rode the AOR charts for weeks in 1982, the year a new cable channel that would alter the course of popular media culture called MTV launched. At the forefront of its early play list was the video for the Holly Knight-penned track that in 1985, was included on the platinum-selling Vision Quest soundtrack. John's next solo effort, 1984's No Brakes, did exactly what the title inferred, barreling at runaway train speed to international acclaim and U.S. platinum success thanks to the smash hit, “Missing You,” which did not stop until it reached Number 1 on the Billboard's Hot 100 Singles, Album Rock Tracks and Adult Contemporary charts. The following up single, “Tears” was a top 10 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock charts. Continuing to evolve as both a songwriter and formidable stage presence, Mask of Smiles was released in 1985, possessing a pair of muscular hit melodies, ”Every Step of the Way,” and “If Anybody Had a Heart,” which appeared on the soundtrack to the 1986 motion picture, About Last Night starring Demi Moore. John's fourth solo LP, Rover's Return, highlighted by the superlative, “These Times Are Hard for Lovers.” The same season that Bon Jovi was urging two lovers to live on a prayer, John delivered an aortal anthem of timeless resonance. “Baby we can make it ‘cause our love will pull us through/ these times are hard for lovers its down to me and you/Nothing's gonna break us if we hang on to what's true, these times are hard for lovers, I believe I you.” “I don't have a plan and most of the songwriting is a knee jerk reaction of being alive. I try to speak from an honest place where the listener can both hear and feel where I'm coming from; the job is mine, to help them understand me. There's a real need as an artist to express who you are and where you're coming from.” A long and prodigious career often combines composition and interpretation, like in 1990 when John recorded the Martin Page and Bernie Taupin-penned track, “Deal for Life” for the Days of Thunder soundtrack. But two years prior to that cinematic adventure, superbly performing another songwriter's work led to one of the biggest hits on John Waite's illustrious resume. In 1988, a reunion with former Baby's band mates, Jonathan Cain and Ricky Phillips –along with uber-guitarist Neal Schon from Journey and drummer Deen Castronovo –resulted in the John Waite fronted supergroup, Bad English. And in 1989, the group's ballad, “When I See You Smile,” – penned by Grammy-winning songwriter, Diane Warren – went to Number 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 and was certified Gold. The album reached Top Five and sold more than two million units in the U.S. alone. Bad English released two albums before breaking up in 1992. Since returning to the recording studio and concert trek as a solo artist in 1995, John has produced a string of solid, existentially eccentric, courageously eclectic and blisteringly electric rock n' roll records, including 1995's Temple Bar, 1997's When You Were Mine, 2001's Figure in a Landscape, 2004's The Hard Way, 2006's Downtown: Journey of a Heart and 2010's In Real Time –an extraordinary live recording that featured burning in-concert realizations of the Baby's “Change”, “Back on My Feet Again” and “Head First”, not to mention Bad English's “Best of What I've Got” as well as a mind-blowing cover of Led Zeppelin's “Rock and Roll.” It was this lifelong passion for original Country that inspired John's sensational 2006 duet with bluegrass legend, Allison Krauss, where the two combined honeysweet vocal forces to remake his international hit, “Missing You.” On February 5, 2007, they performed the song on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. John teamed up with Matchbox 20 lead guitarist and songwriter, Kyle Cook in 2011 and their creative chemistry birthed the exhilarating Rough & Tumble, a long form exercise in raucous riffs and bloody truths highlighted by “Further the Sky,” “Shadows of Love” and the Classic Radio chart topping title track, a remarkable feat for any musician to reach number one airplay after three and a half decades in the music business trenches. All-Access Live hit the streets in 2012 and delivered on all stages of John's career–solo, The Babys and Bad English. Bearing a dynamic, stripped down sound which shows off his talented three-piece band, Waite demonstrates why he's considered one of the great rock and roll singers, imbuing the timeless material with saber toothed vitality and kinetic power. In 2014, Waite returned with Best. Navigating raucous rock, gut bucket blues and country, Waite's new greatest hits album is a thrilling snapshot representing the inspired artistic breadth of this legendary artist's entire career tallying more than 40 years on the rock and roll highway featuring re-recorded versions of signature classics, “Back on My Feet Again,” “Isn't It Time” and “Missing You,” hard-hitting live renditions of “Head First,” “Saturday Night” and “Change” to the more introspective fare of “Suicide Life,” “Downtown” and “Bluebird Café.” The Wooden Heart-Acoustic Anthology Volume 1 and Volume 2, released in 2015 and 2017, respectively, found Waite exploring yet another dimension to his artistry, his deep rooted appreciation of acoustic flavored music. “The Wooden Heart thing was something I'd wanted to attempt since I started making records. I wrote just about anything that was any good on the acoustic; I always had an acoustic with me wherever I went. It's actually more of a surprise that I didn't do something like this sooner.” Framed against stark and stripped down production showcasing only vocals and acoustic guitar, the Wooden Heart records highlighted the core essence of the songs themselves, threading newly penned original compositions, reworkings of some of Waite's favorite material from his solo career and The Babys alongside smartly chosen covers by the likes of Bob Dylan (“Girl From The North Country”), Donovan (“Catch The Wind”) and Richard Thompson, into an authentic and soul stirring musical statement. “The first release (Volume 1) was done on the spot, a day of recording and a day of mixing. It just happened! I didn't stop to think too much about anything but feel. It's what I do best. It was the most natural I'd felt in a recording studio. Two years later, I wanted to record Volume 2 but this time touch on the past. We were playing Wooden Heart shows across America to sold out crowds and I wanted the new release to reflect that with songs like “Isn't It Time” to In “God's Shadow” and “Downtown.” I included some of the original masters to make it what it became, an anthology. The Donovan song, “Catch The Wind” was recorded in a converted cowshed in deep winter in Wales five years ago; Hawkwind's bass player turned it into Foal Studios. The studio was miles from anywhere at the end of a lane so that's another song I always wanted to try. The Wooden Heart-Acoustic Anthology will continue. There's endless possibilities to it now the ice is broken.” With more live shows and new music in the offing, John Waite continues to forge his own singularly personal path, celebrating the present and engaged by the promise of the future. The story is far from over for the Lancaster, England-born rock star/balladeer/storyteller who was inspired onto his musical path by blues, soul and country along with a deep connection to the Celtic folk music of his homeland.
Viktor Krauss joins me on the show this week. Viktor has been in Nashville for many years, but originally hails from Illinois. Viktor is one of the most recognizable players of the upright bass around and has developed a signature sound that is both massive and somehow understated at the same time. I first came to be aware of Viktor through an incredible string of albums with Bill Frisell, starting with the “Nashville” album, but have come to know his extensive body of work which includes stints with his sister Allison Krauss, and a long-standing gig in Lyle Lovett's band. Enjoy, share the episode, and don't forget to leave us a review, and subscribe to the show.
Marc Alghini's Music Mondays with Marc kicks off another week with some groovy tunes such as the latest from Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats, a cover by Allison Krauss and Robert Plant, and local band Still Shine. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Douglas talks all about hearing “Uncle Josh” Graves for the first time with Flatt & Scruggs and, in the early days, using a toothbrush to turn his own guitar into something like a Dobro. He tells stories of his father’s band, the The West Virginia Travellers, and being discovered by the Country Gentlemen. He shares about his lifelong friendship with Ricky Skaggs — and his connections with Tony Rice, J.D. Crowe, Alison Krauss, Ray Charles, to O Brother, and more. Jerry Douglas will go down as one of the finest American musicians of his generation, but for this episode we focus on his true love — his life in bluegrass.

At a young age she picked up the guitar. Along with that, Xaris also discovered a deep love and connection for Folk and Old Time music. She loved how the old songs had life of their own and had been telling the same stories for generations. Xaris still feels the same way. Relaying these old songs to audiences during her shows makes her feel like she’s doing something bigger than herself. On June eighth, two-thousand-ninteen, at nineteen years old, she released an album of Old Time songs titled “Under The Willow”. Under The Willow was recored in Bristol, Virginia with Bigtone Records. Right out of highschool she started traveling the country solo; just a girl and her guitar. Playing listening rooms, living rooms, and festivals, Xaris has captured the people of small town America’s ears with her melodious, high toned voice. She has been compared to Dolly Parton, Allison Krauss, and Joan Baez but has a whole other side of sound all her own. Xaris also writes her own songs. She’s played many songwriters festivals, since the age of twelve and has been featured at the 50th Anniversary Eddie’s Attic Songwriters Shootout in Decatur, Georgia. Now living in Pittsburg, Kansas, Xaris is working on releasing her first full length album of original music in 2020.

This month’s guest is the remarkable bassist and T-Bone Burnett co-conspirator, Dennis Crouch. Originally from Strawberry, Arkansas, Dennis has lived in Nashville for many years. In his early years he struggled to make a living and find enough gigs to support his young family. But it wasn’t long before a fortuitous phone call changed his trajectory and landed him gigs touring with the Down From The Mountain tour, recording with Ralph Stanley, T-Bone Burnett, Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, Gregg Allman, Elvis Costello, Loretta Lynn and so many more. It was incredible to learn about Dennis’ history, his influences on the bass, and his inspiring journey from struggling to find a gig in Nashville to playing some of the biggest shows in the world. Dennis was kind enough to bring along his bass and in the second part of this episode, he demonstrates some of his technique and those of some of his mentors including Ray Brown, Roy Huskey Jr, and Bob Moore. Enjoy my conversation with Dennis Crouch and watch for Part 2, one week from today!

The Wizard of Oz. Noy. There’s no man behind the curtain. He’s the real deal. A working musician since the age of 13, a session musician no less, he took his native Israel by a rock/pop/jazz storm, a recognized part of their hit talk show house band by his early 20s. He’s been killing it worldwide since. No drinks, no drugs, fastidious practice, make the man, and the musician. With 10 albums of his own, Oz has played with just about everybody. Including his heroes. Getting to play rhythm guitar on Walk This Way with Steve Tyler and Joe Perry, one highlight. I saw him kill Get Out Of My Life Woman with Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top two weeks ago, https://bit.ly/2CHkDu3 We talked his yellow brick road, and how he’s found his way home, doing what he loves, and loving it. Jazz may be one of his things, but he loves pop, rock and the blues and has mastered and is in demand cross-genre. Playing an Elton John tune with Sting another highlight, and with Cyndi Lauper for the Dalai Lama- does that story have a punchline. There’s also been Chris Botti, Harry Belafonte, Clay Aiken, Toni Braxton, Phoebe Snow, Nile Rogers,The Allman Brothers, Allen Toussaint, Eric Johnson, Don Was, Nelly Furtado, Jennifer Hudson, Don Henley, Michael Buble, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Sting, Steve Perry, Allison Krauss, and Foreigner, for Chrissakes! Almost all of our guests are friends; I was a bit trepidatious having barely met Oz recently. What a great pleasure to find him warm, easy, affable, generous, thoughtful, helpful, humble, and fun. The only drag was not having an amp so we could sample his gifts. We can here: http://www.oznoy.com/discography/ Loving his band Ozone Squeeze. I was schooled, edu-tained, and happy. What’s better than that? Ozark Highlands Radio is a weekly radio program that features live music and interviews recorded at Ozark Folk Center State Park’s beautiful 1,000-seat auditorium in Mountain View, Arkansas. In addition to the music, our “Feature Host” segments take listeners through the Ozark hills with historians, authors, and personalities who explore the people, stories, and history of the Ozark region. This week, high energy neo-traditional oldtime music phenomenon “The Hogslop String Band” recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with this rowdy group of pickers. Mark Jones offers an archival recording of a very young Allison Krauss performing the traditional tune “Gardenia Waltz.” Writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins relates the history of black bears in the early Ozark region. The Hogslop String Band is a Nashville based old time string band comprised of four energetic young musicians hailing from Georgia & Tennessee. Featuring Kevin Martin on the fiddle, Gabriel Kelley on guitar, Daniel Binkley on banjo and Casey "Pickle" McBride on the washtub bass, these boys surely raise a ruckus. Upon forming as a pickup square dance band in the summer of 2009, The Hogslop String Band has since become one of the most sought after old time string bands. Known for their outrageous facial hair and a rollicking repertoire heavily based on Georgia and Middle Tennessee fiddle tunes, these boys have provided entertainment for fashion shows, political conventions and whiskey distilleries as well as countless weddings, festivals and soirees. Following in the footsteps of such country music luminaries as Uncle Dave Macon and Gid Tanner, they put on a high energy show easily appreciated by both young and old alike. Despite an unkempt appearance, their undeniable charm is as certain to steal your heart as it will your daughters! http://www.hogslopstringband.com In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers an archival recording of a very young Allison Krauss performing the traditional tune “Gardenia Waltz,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. From his series entitled “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins relates the history of black bears in the early Ozark regions of Arkansas & Missouri.
This week, distinguished traditional Louisiana Cajun music connoisseurs The Savoy Family Cajun Band recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with renowned fiddler Joel Savoy. Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark originals Ervin & Lily Freeze performing the song “Let Those Brown Eyes Smile at Me.” Author, folklorist, and songwriter Charley Sandage presents a portrait of Blanchard Springs National Park, featuring an interview with long time U.S. Forest Service visitor information specialist Tony Guinn. The Savoy Family Cajun Band consists of father Marc, mother Ann, and brothers Joel & Wilson Savoy. Marc Savoy was born and raised in the small Cajun prairie town of Eunice, Louisiana. Drawing inspiration from 'bals de maison' (house dances) in his father's outdoor kitchen, Savoy obtained his first accordion and began playing it at the age of 12. Playing the instrument led to repairing it and after disassembling enough accordions he began to build them. Playing the accordion has always been a natural part of his life from the dancehall to the home. The musicians with whom he has played Cajun music read like a who’s who of the finest in Cajun music, from the Balfa Brothers, DL Menard, Doc Guidry to early fiddle masters Dennis McGee and Wade Fruge. Ann Allen Savoy is a musician, photographer, record producer, and writer. Her destiny was sealed when she began to listen to rare collections of Cajun 78’s. She met her future husband, acclaimed accordion builder/musician Marc Savoy, and after their marriage she began documenting the Cajun culture, taking photographs, interviewing important musicians, and transcribing the Cajun French songs. Her documentation ultimately became a book, Cajun Music: A Reflection of a People Volume 1, which won the prestigious Botkin book award from the American Folklore Society. An avid photographer since high school, her photos have been exhibited at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and at the Festival of American Music in Eugene, Oregon. Joel Savoy is one of the most requested fiddlers in SW Louisiana today. Joel grew up in Eunice, Louisiana, literally at the feet of Cajun heros like Dennis McGee, Dewey Balfa, Michael Doucet, and Wade Frugé. In 2006 Joel founded Valcour Records. He’s worked and played with Linda Ronstadt,T-Bone Burnett, Steve Buckingham, Allison Krauss, Linda Ronstadt, Steve Miller, Tim O’Brien, Darol Angor and many more. Joel also builds accordions with his father, makes electric guitars and hi-end tube amps and studio gear, and is an excellent recording engineer. Wilson Savoy, the youngest son of Marc and Ann, has made music since before he could walk. He began playing boogie-woogie and blues piano, inspired by Louisiana native Jerry Lee Lewis, at the age of 10. Wilson took up the accordion after graduating from high school. His major influences are his father, Amede Ardoin, and Iry Lejeune. Besides being a musician he is an avid filmmaker, and has produced films of many of the finest bands in SW Louisiana. (www.almenafilms.com) When he isn’t making and producing music videos and short biographies he is traveling with his three times Grammy nominated dynamic young band, the Pine Leaf Boys. - http://www.savoyfamilycajunband.com/index.html In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers an archival recording of Ozark originals Ervin & Lily Freeze performing the song “Let Those Brown Eyes Smile at Me,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Author, folklorist, and songwriter Charley Sandage presents an historical portrait of the people, events, and indomitable spirit of Ozark culture that resulted in the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and its enduring legacy of music and craft. This episode brings us a portrait of Blanchard Springs National Park, featuring an interview with long time U.S. Forest Service visitor information specialist Tony Guinn.

My guest this week is singer, songwriter and fiddle player Sara Watkins. Watkins debuted in 1989 (at the ripe old age age of 8!!) as a founding member of the progressive bluegrass group Nickel Creek along with her brother Sean and mandolinist Chris Thile. With Nickel Creek, Watkins released five studio albums, won a Grammy and many other awards, and worked with some stellar producers like Allison Krauss and Eric Valentine. At the height of their success, the band decided to go their separate ways (for a while) and in the years of the bands' hiatus, she started recording solo albums, and has made incredible records with the likes of John Paul Jones, Blake Mills and Gabe Witcher. Her new album is called "Young In All The Wrong Ways". It was great to have a chance to sit down and talk about all this and more with her - Enjoy my conversation with Sara Watkins, and please subscribe to the podcast for free on iTunes!

Jen Reilly and Eddy Bluma aka The New Zeitgeist met as solo artists reentering the music scene in Chicago of 2009, but might as well have been around since 1929. "Old souls," they have been described by many, the two began collaborating as a folk duo with soulful harmonies and old spirituals. Their devotions range from Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie to Elvis, Joni, The Staple Singers, and Allison Krauss.
Their upcoming first and full-length album attempts to capture the timeless and undying spirit of the ages, entitled the "New Zeitegists," (pronounced z-tÄ-gÄsts). Their coined word, New Zeitegists implies a revolution as well as a return to the simple things and things that matter; a return to "geist"-spirit, soul, and body. Previous to living in Chicago, in the spring of 2009 Jen Reilly spent four months living at an artists' colony developing her skills and experience in songwriting, performing, and recording at the Contemporary Music Center, an invitation-only community on the island of Martha's Vineyard. Eddy's homegrown Chicago area bands (Candy Coated Tongues, Sux Royale) centered around DeKalb before moving downtown. The two have played at Uncommon Ground almost as a home base since meeting on the Clark location at an open mic in 2009, when Eddy offered Jen to borrow his guitar. Performances by the married duo have included The Heartland Café, Skokie Theatre, Red Line Tap, Mayne Stage, The Store, Miseracordia Home's Annual Family Fest, several Independent Chicago Songwriter's Festivals, and Billy Corgan's Madame Zuzu's. Involvement in local music communities has included Independent Chicago, Old Town School of Folk Music, and Chicago Acoustic Underground. Their song, "Warm and Dry" has been played on WDCB's Folk Festival with Lily Kuzma. Eddy and Jen are proud to be releasing their first self-titled full album project with Mike Hagler and John Abbey at Kingsize Sound Labs in December of 2014.
In this live edition of JazzTimes Spins & Riffs taped at the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival in Cape May, New Jersey, Lee and Rene spin cuts from three recent albums featuring very different vocalists: Allison Krauss (on Billy Childs' Laura Nyro project), Jamie Cullum and Freddy Cole. Rene and Lee riff on Rene's SLAM workshop for singers and what she has learned from her students. They also talk about the difference between singers and instrumentalists. Sponsored by ECM Reords.
Known for his powerful, smooth vocals, DAVID JAMES arrived on to the country music scene in early 2013 with his debut EP release This Must Be It. His unique blend of country rock, paired with his electrifying voice and an unrelenting pursuit of making each performance better than the last, have been generating fans and acclaim from coast to coast. Born in the musical hotbed of Winnipeg, David didn't have a traditional upbringing. "I was exposed to a lot of different things growing up. My mom was a saint, my father was sort of a rebel, and I guess I kinda landed somewhere in the middle. I often tell people I was born into gospel and raised by rock n' roll, but I think it's given me a wider perspective on things and a lot of stories to tell." With a voice that goes down like moonshine – strong but with a smooth finish - singer-songwriter EMILY REID effortlessly blurs the line between alternative country and indie pop. The journey began for Emily in 2009 when she migrated from Victoria, BC to Nashville. Three years later, Emily released her self-titled debut album: a collection of ten “unapologetically honest and unashamedly catchy” pop songs that chronicled her transition to the south (Delgado). In 2013, Emily’s southern soul found its voice. In working with producer Eric Masse, the material draws inspiration from the likes of James Taylor and Allison Krauss. David and Emily are part of the CCMA (Canadian Country Music Association) Discovery Program. The mandate of the program is to create a national program to support country music artists to reach their potential by providing educational, mentorship, networking, and exposure opportunities.

HoneyHoney is 4th generation country music. Maybe even 5th or more. Their musical thread goes back to early American rural styles and moves forward through time picking up the best elements of every twist and turn of America's other, twangier indigenous music style until it arrives fully formed in our modern hybridized and decentralized musical universe. At its heart, HoneyHoney is a duo comprised of soulful chanteuse Suzanne Santo and singer/guitarist Ben Jaffe - and their new record, Billy Jack, is the band's 2nd full-length album since their formation in 2008. Sonically, HoneyHoney takes a page from Allison Krauss' pristine bluegrass and scrawls all over it with Santo's smoky alto and Jaffe's gritty guitars and sparse vocal harmonies. The overall effect is what you might imagine Edith Piaf would have sounded like had she been born in an Alabama holler, complete with a moonshine still and ample inspiration for lyrics about the down and out.
Billy Dean first gained national attention after appearing on the television talent competition ‘Star Search.’ He’s since recorded eight studio albums and a greatest hits package, many of which were certified gold. Although he never had a number one hit on his own, he and Allison Krauss joined Kenny Rogers as guest vocalists on Kenny’s number one ‘Buy Me A Rose’ in 2000. Billy reunited with Kenny on a trip overseas, and we sat down with him at home to hear all about his recent travels. Although Billy is still performing and writing, he’s also into other ventures for corporate marketing. His ‘Song Sessions’ combines songwriting and corporate team building exercises.
