In this edition of Our Burning Planet on CapeTalk’s Afternoon Drive, Graeme Raubenheimer is joined by environmental journalist Ethan van Diemen to unpack Eskom’s controversial new direction for South Africa’s coal-fired power stations. Departing from its original Just Energy Transition (JET) commitments, Eskom is now exploring plans to repurpose ageing coal plants to run on gas, nuclear, or even so-called 'clean coal' technology. Afternoon Drive with John Maytham is the late afternoon show on CapeTalk. Presenter John Maytham is an actor and author-turned-talk radio veteran and seasoned journalist. His show serves a round-up of local and international news coupled with the latest in business, sport, traffic and weather. The host’s eclectic interests mean the program often surprises the audience with intriguing book reviews and inspiring interviews profiling artists. A daily highlight is Rapid Fire, just after 5:30 pm. CapeTalk fans call in, in an attempt to stump the presenter with their general knowledge questions. Another firm favourite is the humorous Thursday crossing with award-winning journalist Rebecca Davis, called “Plan B”. Phil Bryant is a founding member of BSS Global where he provides strategic advice and business development services to some of the world's largest industry leaders. He serves on the executive advisory board of International Leaders Summit. America's Roundtable conversation with Governor Bryant brings to the forefront key policy issues including trade and tariffs, the urgency to advance tax reform, unleash energy independence and protect America's sovereignty. The timely discussion is focused on President Trump's policies and executive orders — and what it means for America's citizens, taxpayers, local communities and states. Governor Tate Reeves (R) and Speaker Philip Gunn (R). As previously noted by Laurie Todd-Smith in a 2023 Magnolia Tribune column on the making of the “Mississippi Miracle,” only 33 percent of third graders and 32 percent of 8th graders were reading proficiently on state tests that year. She led the governor's education policy team and is now the Assistant Secretary for Early Childhood Education at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Bryant presented lawmakers with an education vision titled “Framing Mississippi's Future” and in 2013, reforms such as the Literacy Based Promotion Act (3rd Grade Reading Gate), the Pre-K Collaborative, the Mississippi Charter School Act, Dyslexia Education Scholarships, and more were passed and signed into law. Mississippi unites with Israel at Jerusalem Leaders Summit (https://www.jns.org/mississippi-unites-with-israel-at-jerusalem-leaders-summit/) Jerusalem | Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant bounded on stage and, in his obvious Southern drawl, greeted the guests of the Jerusalem Leaders Summit, which took place last month at the Inbal hotel. Bryant was presented with the Distinguished Leadership Award for his efforts to strengthen the Israel-U.S. strategic partnership. He is a strong Israel advocate and his emotions were on full display when he addressed the crowd. “We have so many friends around the world,” he said, “but none as close, and none that I love more than Israel. I am called to be here. Perhaps sometimes we cannot explain exactly why, but that call, that voice, is stronger than any other that we hear, to come to Israel, to Jerusalem, to do what I can to strengthen this relationship.” The Third Jerusalem Leaders Summit held from Nov. 18-20, proved a unique event featuring leading voices who articulated principled solutions in addressing the 21st-century's economic concerns, global threats and security challenges. The parent organization—the International Leaders Summit, co-founded by Joel Anand Samy and Natasha Srdoc—brought together leaders from America, Britain, continental Europe, India and Israel to its inaugural Jerusalem Leaders Summit event in 2015, affirming the rule of law of civilization, based on shared principles and values. americasrt.com (https://americasrt.com/) https://summitleadersusa.com/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 X: @PhilBryantMS @americasrt1776 @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA @supertalk America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. Tulsi Gabbard officially announces her departure from the Democratic Party and the launch of a new podcast. A new independent? Or the female Tucker Carlson? Real Aloha? Or Fearmongering grift? We expect "The Left" to bully folks who have made mistakes into unemployment and shame. Usually of race or gender issues. But "The Right" doing the same thing? Oh yes. "Woke Derangement Syndrome" takes hold in the world of NASCAR. Could coal be the answer in the fight against climate change? Science says maybe. Beginning with President Obama, we were exposed to the concept of "Clean Coal", which is an oxymoron, but from there we quickly moved in the direction of the "green economy". Remember the "shovel-ready" jobs initiative, the Obama administration paid Americans to have their windows and doors caulked by an army of construction workers. He said it would employ millions of Americans while preparing our society for the new "Green Economy". The Obama administration spent billions of dollars on boondoggles like Solyndra, which ultimately went bankrupt. Later they got much better at picking the winners and distributed billions of more dollars to begin making the grid more green by pumping taxpayer money into projects involving wind and solar. Join me today as we discuss these initiatives and the challenges behind their implementation. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/seth-martin0/message

Hey yo. Am I hard of hearing or is my girlfriend just a low talker? I don't know for certain but there's one easy solution for either problem. Talk louder!! *Wanna get ahead in life? Want to be the person calling all the shots? A new study may have discovered the secret to success. Talk a lot. When you find yourself in a meeting with fifteen other coworkers, keep talking. Even if your ideas are bad and you're making up nonsense, people will look to you for answers. *Doomscrolling!! A man who ended up in the hospital with covid says he'd rather end back up in the hospital than get vaccinated. Is WW3 gonna be a global dispute about ice cream? Cocaine cake looks delicious but it's a little out of my price range. *Do you still get embarrassed to buy certain thing at the store? I can't be the only one who feels eyes on me while I scan the personal lubricant shelf at a sex shop. *According to a new study, men are responsible for global warming. Why might that be? Male CEO's of greedy corporate polluters? CEO's at fossil fuel companies spending billions to convince us oil is harmless? The guy who came up with the term "Clean Coal"? Those are all good guesses but you're wrong. It's your car and your chicken strips. *Another viral video of someone thinking she closed zoom but didn't. What does that story have to do with Slimfast singing Boy George and rubbing his own feet in his face? O'm not sure. *We got one more show this week and I am seriously looking forward to it. Until next time -Everybody Wang Chung!! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week we confront the argument for clean coal head on in a conversation with famous DC lobbyist, John Ashford. John is the CEO and chairman of Hawthorn Group, an international public affairs and public relations firm he co-founded in 1992. John is an absolute genius at marketing and has had many successful campaigns in the past, including a campaign that brought the brand new idea of "clean" coal to the 2008 US election. We peak behind the curtain and get real with John about a just transition to shutting down coal plants and how to convince the American public that coal is dead.
President Trump is finally fulfilling his campaign pledge to undo the Obama Clean Power Plan. It's supposedly a boost for “Clean Coal,” but Wall Street is skeptical and environmentalists are outraged. What does the federal rollback mean for state efforts to beat Climate Change?

Truly clean coal technology is not a myth, argues University of Newcastle chemical engineering researcher Dr Jessica Allen.
“People are saying, ‘Oh, we can’t even talk about carbon removal. It might reduce our need for mitigation.’ Hey, math is math. If you can do arithmetic you can figure this out, and if you KNOW that we need to do carbon removal to get to a stable, just transition, to get to an ecosystem-sustained world—it’s the math. Put some money into it. Start the work. Don’t talk to me whether it’s a moral hazard or not, get on with it. We’ve got things to do.” Dr. Julio Friedmann is the CEO of Carbon Wrangler and a Distinguished Fellow of the Energy Futures Initiative. He also served as the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Fossil Energy at the US Department of Energy, where his portfolio included research and programs in clean coal and carbon management, oil and gas systems, and international engagements in clean fossil energy. In his earlier role as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Clean Coal and Carbon Management, Dr. Friedmann focused on clean coal and carbon capture, utilization and storage. Dr. Friedmann joins Ross and Christophe to define his role as a carbon wrangler and why it’s important, walking us through the current climate math and sharing his insight on reframing carbon in the atmosphere as a resource to be mined. They discuss the best approach to inspiring progress around climate change, the fundamentals of carbon capture and storage, and the differences among offsets, onsets and insets. President Donald Trump has used the term “clean coal” a lot lately, but what is clean coal? Well, it can mean a lot of different things, depending who you ask. For some, it's history. For others, it's a fantasy. And for still others, it's a necessity. But could it become a reality that helps bring back coal and helps stop climate change? Inside Energy’s Madelyn Beck digs deep.
California politicians have sought to portray themselves as anti-Trump crusaders on climate change. Debra Kahn, E&E News' San Francisco reporter, joins the D.C. newsroom to describe her interactions with Gov. Jerry Brown (D). Climatewire White House reporter Zack Colman details his scoop on the Trump administration's new clean coal alliance. Coal as an energy source in power plants will continue to increase in ASEAN and East Asia in the coming decades in the absence of a viable energy alternative, stoking fears of an upsurge in carbon dioxide emissions and greenhouse gases. Signals coming from Washington of lessened concern in the US over pollution issues, and President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on climate change, gives developing Asia little option but to continue down the same path. But many of the ASEAN economies are looking at new technologies that use coal in a cleaner way, such as the ultra-supercritical boiler type—USC—which makes more efficient use of coal, leading to minimal waste of the energy source and curbs carbon dioxide emissions. Australia is in the middle of a debate about coal. The Queensland government is determined to expand its coal production. Indian billionaire Gautam Adani continues to gather support from politicians for his Carmichael Coal Mine in the Galilee Basin. There has been significant push back from scientists and citizens who know that coal production is the leading cause of CO2 emissions and a huge contribute to global climate change. Despite this fact, politicians and resource companies either are convinced the science is wrong, or are choosing to deny the overwhelming evidence in favor of their commercial interests. Did climate change denial start with coal, or is it a historical and systemic issue tied to the resource industry and conservative ideologies? Carbon Capture and Storage has the potential to dramatically reduce the carbon emissions from the burning of coal. Yet the technology’s boosters need to overcome high costs, and major infrastructure challenges, if they’re to make a dent in emissions. --- Carbon capture and storage offers the promise of slashing carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants, and has been touted by some in the electricity industry as part of a basket of “clean coal” technologies that will dramatically reduce the fuel’s environmental impact and provide a lifeline to the U.S. coal sector. Yet CCS is the only clean coal technology that has yet to prove feasible at a scale, and existing CCS projects are few and far between. Kleinman Center for Energy Policy senior fellow John Quigley takes a look at efforts to reduce the technology’s cost and the relative lack of government support to date for CCS. Quigley also discusses CCS’s environmental promise and whether it can be deployed in time to make a positive climate impact. Guest John Quigley served as secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection from January 2015 to May 2016 and as secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources from 2009 to 2011. Quigley led some of the nation’s most advanced work on the potential of Carbon Capture and Storage under former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell. He is currently a senior fellow at the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy.

Dr. Julio Friedmann unpacks the environmental and energy challenges in China - the world’s largest energy user, largest emitter, largest market and largest cleantech enterprise. Interview is followed by excerpt from conversation with Dr. David Victor Dr. Friedmann is the senior advisor for energy innovation at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He has extensive experience at the intersection of clean energy, public policy and global cooperation. Previously, he served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Clean Coal at U.S. Department of Energy. He also advised the US-China Clean Energy Research Center. Following ratification of Paris, they have undertaken an ambitious set of commitments to dramatically change their energy supply, infrastructure, use and efficiency. These large efforts and commitments are backed by substantial actions and investments. At the same time, they are undercut by retractions, shifting targets, a government reform agenda and complex geopolitical forces — converting these investments into both deep decarbonization and economic growth is contingent on technological, financial and human forces. Deep reduction of pollution and GHG emissions will only be achieved through innovation, sustained government action and triumph of this agenda in a complex national context. The chance of success is hard to assess, but required for the global climate accords to have any chance of success. Fronteras: The Democrat facing newly-nominated Republican Dan Patrick in the Texas lieutenant governor race says Sen. Patrick’s pledge to campaign in the minority community is “insulting.” New EPA rules to cut carbon emissions are expected to be unveiled soon. The new rules are expected to spur the use of a so-called clean coal technology. Yet another study shows that electric cars would do more to damage the environment in China than using gasoline- or diesel-powered cars. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers in the U.S. is asking the Obama Administration to tweak its proposed fuel-economy regulations. They want certain credits to start applying right now, not after 2016. Thanks to Land Rover’s surging sales Indian automaker Tata posted a profit that beat analyst’s expectations. All that and more, plus a look at how GM engineers made the 2013 Chevy Malibu as quiet as possible.
Scotland is seeking to become a world leader in renewable energy, while the arguments continue to rage about oil, 'cleaner coal' and nuclear power. How do we provide fuel for the world without destroying it in the process, and can Scotland really be a key player?

Coal-mining communities propose alternatives to Clean Coal. Some people say that green is the new black. Last year, some people started saying that coal is the new green, with the emergence of the term “Clean Coal” in the public discourse on energy. By the end of the election primaries last year, we knew that, regardless of the outcome, we would have a President who favored “clean coal.” But some coal-mining communities have green energy proposals of their own…proposals that don't involve coal. An innovative new process that releases the energy in coal without burning — while capturing carbon dioxide, the major greenhouse gas — has passed a milestone on the route to possible commercial use, scientists are reporting. Their study in the ACS journal Energy and Fuels describes results of a successful 200-hour test on a sub-pilot scale version of the technology using two inexpensive but highly polluting forms of coal.
