With special guest: Eddie Woo… in conversation with Bill Kable We hardly need to do an introduction for our guest today. Eddie Woo has become very well-known through regular television appearances and YouTube lessons as one of the leading teachers in the world. The Government has recognised this by recently appointing him as a “super teacher” so that he can visit schools around NSW and inspire the teachers to inspire their students. Ever thought that you were just no good at Maths and anyway what good is Maths in everyday life. Our guest today begs to differ on both counts. Eddie says Maths is for everyone and he has lots of ways of convincing you that not only is Maths fascinating but it underlies everything in the universe. Yes Eddie Woo comes to Dads on the Air and adds to the audience on his YouTube channel Wootube where he has been viewed a staggering 25 million times. Podcast (mp3)
In this episode we speak to Eddie Woo, mathematics expert, self-confessed geek and educational leader with the NSW Department of Education. Famous in teaching circles and beyond, Eddie has over one million YouTube subscribers to his channel @misterwootube. He currently splits his time between providing curriculum support for the mathematics team within the department and teaching at a NSW public school on Darug land. Despite his attraction to all things mathematics and logic, Eddie is the first to admit there was no strategic 5 or 10-year plan for his teaching career trajectory. Instead, he's been driven by two main forces: firstly, the problems he's encountered, and secondly, saying yes to opportunities that have presented themselves. To give evidence to the first, 12 years ago, Eddie was teaching a student who was unable to attend school regularly due to illness. It was in his quest to find an engaging way to help that student keep up with his learning beyond textbooks, that @misterwootube was born. Eddie shares his progression into school leadership and answers some hard-hitting questions from our co-hosts - how do you keep the passion for a subject area alive after many years of teaching? And, what has most surprised you about a career in teaching? You'll also hear his perspective on teaching a specific subject area and how it can be most impactful when it's student-led. Mostly in this episode, you will fall in love with Eddie's passion for teaching and commitment to lifelong learning. For Eddie, teaching is so much more than love for your subject, it's about bringing in the world around us and making those connections to the syllabus in a way that's meaningful for students. We hope you enjoy this episode (as much as Eddie loves Pythagoras' theorem). We acknowledge that this episode of TeachCast was recorded on the homelands of the Darug people. Using storytelling as a teaching tool, the value of the relationship between student and lesson, hit YouTube channel MisterWootube, and the unique approach of the Mathematics Growth Team. Professor of Practice at the University of Sydney, published author, TED speaker, TV host on ABC and Channel 10, and Mister Wootube himself, Eddie Woo joins this episode of the podcast to share the many lessons he has learned over his career about overcoming student trauma responses to mathematics, learning how your students learn, the secret ingredient to a good lesson, and so much more. “She started to explain to me about rhythms and melodies and harmonies and how they all fit together in a beautiful symmetry. And I said to her, ‘That is all mathematics.'” An infectious smile flashes across Eddie Woo's face as he recalls meeting singer-songwriter Odette backstage at a TED Talk. She told him she didn't like maths; he found a way to connect it to her world. “Mathematics is like music to the mind, in a way that music is like mathematics to the soul.” Eddie's ability to connect people with maths, and make it fun and engaging, has made him a household name. The Australian high school teacher is known to millions of students worldwide as Mister WooTube thanks to his online classes – and he is now teaching the next generation of teachers at the University of Sydney. Eddie Woo, alumni of the University of Sydney and the teacher you wish you had, is here with a lesson on embracing learning at any age. He also gets personal, reflecting on his own life, how the death of his mother shaped his view of growth mindset, and how he came to realise teaching isn't about knowing all the answers. If you think you don't like maths, prepare to be surprised. In this much-anticipated episode, host, Leanne McMahon sits down with world-famous maths educator Eddie Woo to try to harness his enthusiasm to inspire us all to be the best maths teacher we can. We discuss what inspires Eddie, how he moved from feeling ‘on the outside' to where he is today and what he has learned along the way (and from whom). We touch on the perceived dichotomy between direct instruction and learning through problem solving and mention other pedagogies that may have been set up as dichotomous, but that all contribute to the rich tapestry of Maths teaching. Finally, we look at the importance of mentoring for all teachers and where Eddie would go for professional learning. Eddie woo is a guest that needs no introduction. He is, arguably, Australia's most famous and most loved maths teacher. He is a brilliant educator, TED speaker, Play School star, and Youtube phenomenon. He is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including: The 2018 NSW Local Hero University of Sydney Young Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement The Top 10 Finalist in the Global Teacher Prize Awarded Australian Local Hero (2018) What is particularly refreshing about Eddie is that, despite these achievements, he has never lost sight of the fact that as teachers, we have the privilege to serve those that matter most - our students. Eddies is warm, engaging and was incredibly generous with his time.

His YouTube channel, WooTube, has more than 200,000 subscribers and over 13 million views. Eddie believe that mathematics can be embraced and even enjoyed by absolutely everybody. He was named Australia's Local Hero and was a Top 10 Finalist in the Global Teacher Prize for his love of teaching mathematics. Math teacher, Youtube star, everyday hero? Eddie Woo never had an interest in maths in school, now he's online helping thousands of adults and students across the world learn math and apply it to their life. Listen now to see how it all adds up to Eddie Woo, everyday hero.
On this episode we are joined by teacher, instructional leader and "Teacher Tuber" Bec West. Bec shares how Eddie Woo inspired her to explore the use of YouTube in the classroom. We discuss the impact of COVID-19 on education, our thoughts on "teacher pay teacher" phenomenon and what excites us in education.
As life in Australia slowly returns to some semblance of normalcy, the Critical Banter Podcast continues its rapid descent into madness. This week we pick up where we left off last week with some risque chat about children, however, this week we are finally joined by Kushagra, who is absolutely, definitely not a groomer. The episode begins in typical fashion talking about Wuhan, Latrell Mitchell and likening ScoMo to Hitler before waxing lyrical about Eddie Woo and besmirching the scum that is Guzman y Gomez. We also play a game of “Would You Rather,” where Sen ponders the opportunity cost of being a pedo and Rohit lusts over his 6 year old cousin. Finally we scrutinise some of Miguel's Tinder pickup lines where we soon discover that Kushagra has fundamentally misunderstood the point of Tinder. Also this week: Mike Tyson, Smash Mouth, #WootubeTo1Mil and #BoycottGYG Segments this week: The Logue: Tired of reaching around each other (at least on the podcast), the boys have instead decided to reach around the week's news stories, events and viral trends. Would You Rather: The boys are presented with hypothetical questions and have to choose which option they'd rather. Rate My Chat: What's better than having 3 single blokes rip into other single blokes attempts at courting women. ___________________________________________________ FULL PODCAST EPISODES
This week on the show we delve deep into one of our favourite topics: grooming. Due to legal reasons resident groomer Kushagra misses out this week, but nevertheless the boys still dig deep and explore this time honoured concept. The episode begins with us righting a wrong from last week, before we solemnly eulogise our fearless leader Kim Jong Un. We then theorise an NRL Big Brother, we give out some sound relationship advice and Rohit comes to the realisation that Eddie Woo is the one true Lord and Saviour in his life (sorry Jesus). Also this week: Donny's cure, Stan Wawrinka, Sen is a flake and shopping trolley tetris. Segments this week: The Logue: Tired of reaching around each other (at least on the podcast), the boys have instead decided to reach around the week's news stories, events and viral trends. Unsolicited, Unqualified and Uncomfortable: Having relationship issues or need some advice regarding your relationship? Well, who better to give advice than three very single blokes. Mind Your Manners: The boys discuss the dos and don'ts and correct etiquette to help you out of your next awkward social scenario. What Did We Learn: As per usual, the boys cap off the episode with a useless nugget of information. This time, they leave you with something they learned during the week (which you all probably already knew) _______________________________________________________ FULL PODCAST EPISODES

Today’s episode is all about the M in STEM, mathematics. We’re talking about why maths is more than just equations and numbers, that it surrounds us in nature and why it has such a bad stigma attached to it. To help us explain this topic we’re joined by Barbara Holland, an associate professor and mathematician. Barbara works within the Theoretical Phylogenetics research group in the School of Natural Sciences at the University of Tasmania. We were also incredibly lucky to have been able to interview the 2018 Australian local hero of the year and math teacher youtube sensation, Eddie Woo. Eddie gave us insight into why maths has such a bad stigma and why he finds such joy in teaching it.Tune in to hear why maths is more than just numbers and how we can destigmatise the subject.

In this episode, Tim Perkins gets his maths on with Maths Teacher & Author Eddie Woo. You don't need to be a maths lover or even an educator to engage with this conversation. Scribblers Festival 2019 - Podcast 02 - Eddie Woo by Scribblers Festival
Australia’s favourite maths teacher and ‘Local Hero’ Eddie Woo chats with Mark Scott in a special episode recorded live at the University of Sydney.
YouTube mathematics juggernaut Eddie Woo and Ky discuss the ups and downs of Chinese discipline and ethnic enclaves, the problems with news and social media, gender differences and why everyone needs to meet those who are different.
Eddie Woo is an Australian mathematician best known for his YouTube Channel focused on explanations of math problems, live from the classroom. Eddie’s parents placed a lot of importance on education, as they had packed up and left Malaysia to give their children better prospects. So when Eddie told them he wanted to be a teacher, they weren’t exactly thrilled. However, having over half a million subscribers on his YouTube channel and a ‘master teacher’ with the NSW Department of Education, Eddie’s parents are more than supportive. Eddie is not only teaching students to love mathematics, but he is also influencing the role of the teacher in the classroom. Eddie joins Joey on Out of the Box to discuss fitting into Australian culture, his struggles at school and his philosophy to teaching. Producers: Bre Jones and Nicole De Palo

New Stories, Bold Legends: Stories from Sydney Lunar Festival
Eddie Woo is Leader of Mathematics Growth at the NSW Department of Education and he teaches at Cherrybrook Technology High School, the largest secondary school in NSW. He is known for his innovation and personal approach in the classroom, which in 2012 led him to start posting videos online for a student who was sick with cancer and missing a lot of school. Before long, his videos found an audience across the country and beyond. Wootube now boasts more than 300,000 subscribers and has attracted more than nineteen million views worldwide – and counting. Eddie’s unique and caring approach to teaching is breaking the misconception that mathematics is an inaccessible and difficult subject. Eddie is well known across Australia as an advocate for teachers and the importance of teaching. He has written for, and been featured in, the specialist teaching press as well as in national and international media. His first book, Woo’s Wonderful World of Maths, has just been published worldwide by Pan Macmillan. https://misterwootube.com/ https://newstories.net.au/eddie-woo/
Eddie Woo might very well be the world's most famous mathematics teacher. Through his own passion for learning, Eddie has inadvertently created mathematical hysteria through his unique delivery of teaching. When trying to help a student who was absent from the classroom due to illness, Eddie began to video his lessons and send YouTube links to help his pupil stay on top of the content. It wasn't long before other students started utilising these videos and the lessons began trickling outside of the classroom. That trickle turned into a tsunami of interest and now people all over the world have come to enjoy and get value from Eddie's teaching. At the time of putting together this episode, Eddie's channel (appropriately named 'WooTube') has close to 26 million views and 476,000 subscribers. That's a lot of people interested in mathematics. Due to the exponential attention pointed in his direction, Eddie made the decision to take advantage of the mainstream appeal and release his first ever Mathematics book (stay with me here, it's far more interesting than you would think) called Woo's Wonderful World of Maths. Mathematics for many of us usually brings back grim memories of school where complicated equations were forcefully taught with no context delivered or perceived relevance in the 'real world'. Eddie's book demonstrates not only the importance of mathematics in our very existence but also uncovers some of the surprising patterns and wonder in everyday life and how we can benefit from understanding maths better. To really highlight that this is not your typical school text book, some of the chapters include; Lighting Through Your Veins Teacups and (Almost) Infinite Money What Sunflowers Know About the Universe Killer Butterflies Illuminati Confirmed My Phone, the Liar Why Aren't Left-Handers Extinct? Why Your Pancreas is like a Pendulum ... just to scrape the surface. His efforts have not only be rewarded with a successful online presence and book deal, but also community recognition. In 2018 alone, Eddie has been awarded with both the 2018 New South Wales Local Hero and Australia Local Hero awards. Currently the Head Mathematics Teacher at Cherrybrook Technology Highschool in Sydney, Eddie is in the midst of juggling worldwide fame and his daily task of fuelling his students with mathematical knowledge of the world. Not the easiest of quests, however Eddie has embraced this unorthodox role and is bringing his infectious thirst for learning to as many as he can. I could sit here and wish that I had someone like Mr Woo when I was in school, however I think it would be far more fitting to share what thousands of others all over the world would be saying and declare that Eddie Woo is my current Mathematics Teacher. How cool. Grab Eddie's book Woo's Wonderful World of Maths from all of your usual good book buying locations and subscribe to WooTube for ongoing mathematical marvel. Eddie Woo and David Watson love teaching mathematics and you can too … “I became a Maths teacher because of my Year 12 Maths teacher… they came across as good people teaching good things… since then, I’ve been thinking about the power of exploration in Maths and the beauty of not always having to have the right answer. …in Mathematics it’s like oh, this makes sense now and it’s something I’ve seen all the time in my everyday life and now I know why... Connecting students’ learning to their own context and showing the relevance of that… it’s not “fake world” learning… what I think might be a good place to begin is to find a local problem, something that’s pressing on you ... to solve a problem that matters.” For information about contributors and the JPL Podcast, as well as Journal of Professional Learning articles and Centre for Professional Learning courses, please visit our website www.cpl.asn.au/podcasts
