No matter where you are in your career, you'll benefit from listening to 3Q. 3Q provides a window into the careers of some of the best in the music business. Every episode is an insider's view of the realities of life as a music executive. Topics include issues of empowerment, uncertainty, trust, finances, etc; issues that will impact you both personally and professionally. The executives we interview represent every aspect of the industry including but not limited to A&R, Marketing, Music Supervision, Artist Management, Promotion, and more.  About Nicole: Nicole Plantin was most recently General Manager of award winning television and film producer and director Kenya Barris' joint label venture Khalabo Music/Interscope. Previously she was head of A&R at Rostrum Records, an independent label born in Pittsburgh and known for launching the careers of both Wiz Khalifa and the late Mac Miller. While an undergraduate student at NYU, Plantin cut her teeth in the industry as an intern in the A&R admin department at Elektra Records, then helmed by Sylvia Rhone and whose roster included Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliott and Ol' Dirty Bastard. Nicole's professional journey crystallized at Star Trak in 2001, where she joined president and CEO Rob Walker in managing the day-to-day operations of a label partnership with Arista Records, as well as the management needs of artists and producers like The Neptunes and Kelis. As the A&R coordinator for all of the label's releases, Plantin is credited on notable projects such as Clipse's ‘Hell Hath No Fury', Kelis's ‘Tasty', N*E*R*D's ‘Fly Or Die', and more. Following five successful years at Star Trak, Nicole was enlisted by super producer Rich Harrison to help launch his joint venture with Atlantic/Richcraft Records. Shortly after the label folded, Nicole was offered a role at BMI as the Director of Writer/Publisher Relations in Los Angeles, where she was responsible for discovering new talent such as Jhene Aiko, Schoolboy Q, Nipsey Hussle, Joey Bada$$, T-Minus (Nicki Minaj, Drake), Illangelo (The Wknd) and more, and signing them to their roster—a position that reflects one of the most important parts of her career. As a multidimensional executive with both a flair for tastemaking and a mastery of the business of the music industry, Plantin “connects the dots” in ways that align nurturing artist's creative talents with the promise of success. While at BMI, Plantin brought a much-needed showcase to the west coast with Next Fresh Thing, a series whose stage was graced by L.A.-based artistsMiguel, Dom Kennedy, Big Sean, Priscilla Rhenea (now Muni Long) among others. After five years at BMI, Nicole returned to working on the label side of the business with the desire to work more intimately with artists and their projects. As VP of A&R at Rostrum, Nicole worked alongside President and founder, Benjy Grinberg to oversee the curation and growth of the label as it entered into its next phase. While there, she took on the projects of existing artists Mod Sun and Vali (now Emotional Oranges), and signed a variety of talent reflective of the many diverse sounds emerging from regions throughout the US and the UK. Her signings included DC rapper Inannet James who was deemed “one of the best new talents in hip-hop” and whose album Keep it Clean “one of best projects, front to back of the year” by the lifestyle publication Hypebeast. Other signings included UK R&B singer-songwriter Taliwhoah, DC rapper Kelow Latesha, Atlanta based multi hyphenate Natalie Lauren and Baton Rouge rapper Caleb Brown. Nicole sits on the board of the Recording Academy. In her spare time, Nicole volunteers as a Grammy NEXT and Next Gen Femme mentor, travels and collects art. Nicole is also the creator and host of the podcast Soeur Lab which highlights creative womxn who drive culture and set trends from behind the scenes.

Welcome back to Don't Alert the Stans! For this week's episode, it's just Eden and Sope as Nic had family commitments. When Eden takes time to remind the listeners that #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek is looming, it inspires Sope to speak at length about JoJo's latest project ‘trying not to think about it' which explores the many shades of mental health and anxiety (00:10:59). Continuing on the mode of music that soothes and functions as an emotional solace, Eden gives a glowing recommendation of Natalie Lauren's project ‘Handle With Care' (00:27:14). During the listens section, Eden opens the floor to discuss what the appeal about Blxst is and considers whether he's just ageing out of the sounds and trends associated with US mainstream Hip-Hop (00:35:37). Kicking off the news section is Teyana Taylor who's announced the second and final part of her farewell tour which commenced at the end of 2021. Leading Sope to question whether she's actually retiring and look back on how Kanye West and GOOD Music routinely dropped the ball on her career progression (00:50:23). Rounding out this week's episode is TikTok who have launched their own music distribution service SoundOn, which has been described as an all in one platform for music marketing and distribution. Inspiring a conversation about how TikTok's increasing presence in the music space is threatening to destabilise many archaic institutions in music like record labels (01:01:00). Not one to miss! In this BlackGirlMagic Episode, Ekemini and Christina are at the table with Natalie Lauren Sims. They talk about Natalie's hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma on the heels of the centennial anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre. Learn more about Natalie Lauren Sims: Art is where we wander until our voice finds us. And like all truth, it finds us eventually. As stubborn as a sunrise, arriving to set the captives of darkness free, Natalie Lauren's work is the “Art of Liberation.” In the spirit of unrelenting audacity inherited from her hometown, the same womb that birthed Black Wall Street; Natalie Lauren is a multi-sensory storyteller. Advocating for untold stories of black women is a burden too significant to be restricted to one medium. So Natalie has set out to master a mixed media form of storytelling, utilizing Songwriting, Painting, and Creative Direction. Her art is an homage created to disrupt the silence and the monolithic identity seeking to oppress black women into a digestible narrative for everyone else but themselves. Natalie aims to curate a safe space for black women to explore the fullness of their humanity found in radical BEING instead of consistent DOING. Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. On May 30, I snapped photos as Rev. Robert Turner stood in the street of the Brookside commercial district as he led a “We Can’t Breathe” protest. It was the first of three weeks of protests in Tulsa in what became global response to the killing of George Floyd. For many Tulsans, it was a reminder of the recent officer involved killings of Black Tulsans Terence Crutcher, Joshua Barre, Joshua Harvey and others. Throughout the protests, Rev. Turner was among those saying their names as he led the call for police reform. We lead this discussion with his reaction to the Floyd killing and how it spurred a local response.Following the May 30 and 31 protests, it led to a sitdown with Mayor G.T. Bynum to discuss the changes Turner and other Black leaders want to see occur in the City of Tulsa. Turner is a vocal critic of the mayor. On June 8, I took photos as Turner stood near the City Hall entrance and pointed his megaphone up toward the mayor’s office as he continued to call out his demands for change. Turner discusses his issues with the mayor, policing and the justice system and how it’s connected to the Tulsa Race Massacre, which occurred 99 years ago the weekend the protests started. In the second half of our conversation we discuss why Dr. Turner came to Tulsa to lead the congregation at the historic Vernon AME Church, which is the lone building on Black Wall Street to survive the destruction of the Race Massacre. He also shares what it means to him to lead the historic church as we near the 100th anniversary of the most horrific event in our city’s history.Dr. Turner’s roots are in Alabama. Born and raised in Tuskegee, he went to school at the University of Alabama where before graduating with honors he helped lead a movement, which caused the university to recognize the presence of two slaves, Jack and Boysie, who were buried on the college campus. He led congregations in Mobile and Selma before relocating to Tulsa in 2017, where he immediately got to work. Rev Turner sits on the National African American Reparations Commission, Board of Trustees for the American Village, the 1921 Race Massacre Centennial Commission, Tulsa Mass Graves Oversight Commission, the Board of Directors for the Terence Crutcher Foundation, North Tulsa Task Force, Demanding a Just Tulsa, and the Advisory Board of the Blackburn Institute of the University of Alabama and the chairperson of the board for the Turner Ministry Association 501(c)3. He is also an Academic Dean for Jackson Theological Seminary, in Little Rock Arkansas. This conversation occurred by phone on June 23. It was a few days after the Juneteenth weekend and President Donald Trump’s Tulsa rally. It had been a long three weeks before our talk. I spent many days in front of the marches and close to megaphones snapping hundreds of photos as Rev. Turner and others led protests. You can see those galleries on TulsaPeople.com. It’s an important time in our city, and this was an important conversation that I’m thankful to share with you. Following my conversation with Rev. Turner, our music writer Kyra Bruce shares a new single from Tulsa artist Natalie Lauren. More on that later. Let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Rev. Robert Turner.

Joseph Prielozny & Dirty Rice Show Notes   Faith + Music + Mission = Momentum  Grammy-award winning producers talk about what it’s like to live their life through their faith perspective and music. No production entity in Christian hip hop has achieved more in the past. Formed by Joseph Prielozny and Dirty Rice, COBRA collaborated with Lecrae on his September release, Anomaly to earn a Grammy Award for the song “Messengers” and another nomination for “All I Need Is You.” On Tuesday, the extended COBRA crew, which includes rapper KB and singer-songwriter Natalie Lauren, gave birth to Tomorrow We Live. Dirty Rice produced seven out of the album's 14 tracks with Prielozny, who also played the role of A&R with Lauren. “I think [Prielozny] is the genius behind a lot of what has come out of Reach, and Dirty’s a beast,” KB said, “and when we come together, you might get struck by the COBRA.” Tomorrow We Live has been purchased more on iTunes than any hip-hop album this week besides Love Story by Eminem-endorsed Yelawolf. Its success was predictable, considering that Reach Records has had 17 straight solo albums chart on the Billboard 200. Less predictable were the events that made COBRA — and Tomorrow We Live as it exists today — possible. A New Leaf Before Reach CEO Ben Washer wanted to sign Lecrae, he had his eye on another act — A New Leaf, an acoustic duo formed by Kurt Denmark and Prielozny, whose brother roomed in college with Washer. A New Leaf flew to New York to record its Reach debut, but the group ultimately never released any music.  “I just felt like I didn’t need to be in the spotlight,” Prielozny said. Instead, Prielozny accepted a job in Nashville, Tennessee as an assistant to Grammy-nominated producer Shaun Shankel. Then in 2004, Washer sent Prielozny an album that captured his attention — Real Talk by Lecrae.   “Man, this Christian music is different from the Christian music I’m working on in Nashville,” Prielozny said. Bored one night, Prielozny produced a rock remix of Real Talk and returned it to Washer. Lecrae loved it. This led to Amped, the rap-rock EP released in 2007 by the 116 Clique, and then an offer for Prielozny to join Reach as an on-staff producer. Listen to the show and learn how perseverance and not fearing failure can inspire the change you most desire out of life.   www.journeyprinciples.com/cobra
