Botham Shem Jean was a 26-year-old Saint Lucian, a Harding University graduate, and a Risk Assurance Associate with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas, Texas. On September 6, 2018, Botham’s life was cut short when he was shot and killed by a neighbor—off-duty Dallas Police Officer Amber Guyger—who maintained she entered his apartment believing it to be hers. She said she mistook Botham for a burglar. On October 2, 2019, Guyger was convicted of murder in a Dallas courtroom and sentenced to 10 years in prison. She will first be eligible for parole in five years. On this episode, Botham’s mother, Allison Jean, speaks from the heart about her son, his life, his spirit, and his enduring legacy. Allison is the CEO of the National Utilities Regulatory Commission and lives in St. Lucia with her husband, Bertram. She also sits on the board of The Botham Jean Foundation. Iconic Comedian Richard Pryor said it best, "When Blacks seek Justice, they often get Just-Us," which is why the title of this show is so important. These prophetic words were expressed over 30yrs ago and they are as relevant now as they were relevant then. Black people are arrested at a much higher rate than any ethnicity in this country. Black and brown boys and men are still the victims of police brutality more than any other community in this country. And, Black people as a community have felt the brunt of the Criminal Justice System in a way no other community has. This is why tonight's interview is so hard-htting and compelling. Kelley Williams-Bolar is the young mother who was sentenced to 3yrs in prison for falsifying her home address so that her daughters could go to school in a better school district. Her case made national headlines back in 2011 and it has become even more relevant today, as Actress Felicity Huffman; indicted as a part of the largest College Admissions Scandal in U.S. History, was sentenced to only 14 days in prison for paying $15,000 to have her daughters SAT scores boosted so she could get into Stanford University. Since her incident; Kelley Williams-Bolar has made guest appearances reliving her unsettling experience on various news stations and talk shows. Bolar has shared panels and got the attention of celebrities and civil rights activist such as, Al Sharpton, Roland Martin, Julie Chen, Kevin Johnson, Leah Remini,  Tune in tonight to her the conclusion of her compelling story.  PLUS, we plan to talk about the Amber Guyger verdict, in addition to some of the week's hotest topics. Great show in show in store. In today’s episode of “Obsessively Outspoken”, we are compelled to revisit the Dallas police shooting of Botham Jean after a series of conflicting stories made headlines. Comedian Kathy Griffin is preparing for a comeback after the controversial photo of her holding a decapitated bloody head of President Donald Trump was widely publicized in the media. Yellow and I debate whether the backlash and criticism she received was warranted or was she excoriated unfairly. Speaking of Donald Trump, ever since he was elected President it seems like the political climate has changed drastically. Some would say for the worst and some would say for the better depending on which political side of the aisle you stand on. We talk about the present state of the Democrats and what lies ahead for a party that seemed to have all the momentum on their side.

The boys are back in town -- we've got a great show for you and an even better guest! We're talking with Aaron Wills, a local attorney and two-time NCAA champion with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Aaron shares his inspiring story of perseverance -- from the gridiron in Lincoln, to surviving law school as a single dad, to hanging his own shingle in Honolulu. We also talk about the nascent college football season and some big local and national stories off the field -- including the killing of Botham Shem Jean, Nike teaming up with Colin Kaepernick, and why Josh was enough of a masochist to watch Ben Shapiro and Clay Travis whine for an hour about sports being "too political." But first! Ryan and Josh discuss President Trump's continued hurricane-themed disgrace, Cynthia Nixon's loss to Andrew Cuomo in the New York governor's primary, Unite Here! Local 5 voting to STRIKE!!!, and Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho's problematic new bestie, Davao Mayor Sara Duterte -- the daughter of Filipino strongman and world-renowned lunatic Rodrigo! Let's just say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Don't forget to like, share, rate, subscribe, and continue the conversation with us on Twitter @BlueHawaiiPod! On this episode of The Critical Hour, Dr. Wilmer Leon is joined by Dr. Stephanie Myers, co-chair of Black Women for Positive Change. She'll discuss what the organization is doing to combat gun violence as a new report declares it a humanitarian crisis.According to Amnesty International, we all want to be safe, secure and to live without fear, which is a human right that we all have. But in the US, gun violence is an epidemic that directly threatens these rights – to discuss this we turn to my first guest, a businesswoman, and civic leader. A staggering number of people are killed with guns in the United States every year: more than 30,000 men, women, and children. Among high-income countries, the United States accounts for 80 percent of all gun deaths in the world, 86 percent of all women killed by guns and 87 percent of all children younger than 14 who are killed by guns. Fueling this epidemic, laws on guns in the United States are inconsistent and weak – and federal, state and local governments are not meeting their obligations under international law to protect people's safety. It's Friday! Time for the weekly panel discussion. There are lots of things to talk about. From lessons learned in New York's election results to the continuous progressive blue wave. Also, last week, Botham Shem Jean was shot and killed by Dallas police officer Amber Rene Guyger, who authorities say accidentally went to Jean's apartment, thinking it was her own. Now, the smear headlines are appearing attacking Jean's character. What's going on here? Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro received a rare yet exceedingly warm welcome Thursday as he landed in Beijing, where the oft-maligned leader and target of US-spearheaded regime-change efforts will discuss new ways in which his government and the People's Republic of China can deepen their relations and strengthen their long-running ties. Lastly, Paul Manafort will cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller as part of his guilty plea. We've got all those topics and more!GUESTS:Dr. Stephanie Myers - Vice president of R.J. Myers Publishing Company and national co-chair of Black Women for Positive Change. She served as a presidential appointee for 12 years and authorized the first US commercial space launch of a privately owned rocket. Caleb Maupin - Journalist and political analyst who focuses his coverage on US foreign policy and the global system of monopoly capitalism and imperialism. He has appeared on Russia Today, PressTV, TeleSur and CNN. He has reported from across the United States, as well as from Iran, the Gulf of Aden and Venezuela.Earl Ofari Hutchinson - Political analyst, author of Why Black Lives Do Matter and host of the weekly Hutchinson Report on KPFK 90.7 FM Los Angeles and the Pacifica Network.
