We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2015 conversation with Swamp Dogg. ABOUT SWAMP DOGGR&B cult favorite Jerry “Swamp Dogg” Williams is best known as the co-writer, with Gary U.S. Bonds, of the cross-genre classic, “She's All I Got,” which became a Top 10 R&B single for Freddie North and a #2 country hit for Johnny Paycheck in 1971. Tracy Byrd recorded it in 1996, hitting #4 on Billboard's Country rankings and introducing the song to a new generation of fans. Williams' career began in 1954 when, at the age of 12, he made his first record, “HTD Blues.” He found success in the 1960s, recording the Top 40 R&B hit “Baby You're My Everything” under the name Little Jerry Williams, and writing songs for other artists, including Gene Pitney's Top 20 Pop single, “She's a Heartbreaker.” He became Atlantic Records' first African American staff producer in 1968, but left the following year to pursue independent projects in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. By the 1970s he was an in-demand producer and songwriter, penning Top 40 R&B hits for Doris Duke, Arthur Conley, and Dee Dee Warwick. Around the same time, he reinvented himself as Swamp Dogg, releasing a series of eccentric deep soul albums whose gonzo lyrics were marked by frank sexuality, biting satire, radical politics, and provocative social observations. His debut LP, Total Destruction to Your Mind, was eventually certified Gold, while subsequent releases, including Gag a Maggott, I'm Not Selling Out – I'm Buying In, An Awful Christmas and a Lousy New Year, and The White Man Made Me Do It have earned considerable accolades among underground music lovers and earned Swamp what one journalist described as “a cultural niche somewhere between Rudy Ray Moore and Frank Zappa.” In recent years, his vast catalog has been sampled by Kid Rock, Talib Kweli, DMX, and others.
Crack open a beer with us as we talk about two artists who became legends for their rebellious music.First we'll cover one of the many greatest hits compilations from Johnny Paycheck. "Biggest Hits" covers Paycheck's time with Epic and Billy Sherrill in the producer's chair. We'll talk about his outlaw image, the good and bad sides of his rocky career, and Julius offers an interesting interpretation of "She's All I Got"Then we'll talk about the wild debut album from Ol' Dirty Bastard - which plainly and profanely displays his personality. We'll talk at length about his need to entertain, and how that results in some fun, chaotic, and incredible rap music that only can be pulled off by ODB.Both of these artists were unafraid to speak their mind, leading them to success despite personal struggles that interfered with that. Stay in touch and sign up for Paco's weekly email newsletter, The Nerdletter. In this compelling episode of Weird Finance, Madeline Pendleton, the dynamic owner of the vintage clothing company Tunnel Vision and TikTok's "Gen Z's Aunt Madeline," dives deep into the complexities of financial control, economic destiny, and the interplay between personal agency and systemic forces. Madeline shares her personal journey of overcoming poverty, the illusory nature of the American dream, and the struggles of her generation during and following the Great Recession. She offers an honest reflection on the limitations of hard work in achieving success and dispels the myth of American exceptionalism. With insights from her book, "I Survived Capitalism and All I Got was this Lousy T-Shirt," Madeline discusses the power of small, controllable actions over one's finances and the importance of focusing on joy and pleasure within the confines of a tight budget. Moreover, Madeline touches on the challenge of ethical entrepreneurship within the market system, the role of marketing in consumerism, and her preference for durable synthetic fibers in her designs. Throughout the conversation, Madeline emphasizes the need to redirect societal priorities from military spending to addressing homelessness and hunger, while promoting a life that cherishes simplicity, community, and the little things that make us happy. Madeline Pendleton is the founder of Tunnel Vision and hosts a podcast about surviving life, love, and capitalism called "Pick Me Up, I'm Scared." She recently wrote a book about her life and experiences with money called "I Survived Capitalism and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt". In this episode of Simply King, I delve into the world of love songs and the stories they tell. Specifically, I explore the lyrics of J. Cozier's "She's All I Got", Mya's "Fallen", and Carl Thomas's "I Wish". While on the surface these songs may seem like simple love songs, I examine the themes of dependence, fear, and regret that they explore, while pointing out the oddest elements of the lyrics and visuals. Along the way, he shares interesting facts about the songs and the artists and plays clips from the music videos. The North Wing of The Danny Lane Music Museum is dedicated to Northern Soul. Northern Soul is its own genre of music that grew out of the underground rhythm and soul scene of the late 1960s at venues such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, England (UK). This music and the associated dances and fashions quickly spread to other UK dancehalls and nightclubs like the Chateau Impney (Droitwich), Catacombs (Wolverhampton), the Highland Rooms at Blackpool Mecca, Golden Torch (Stoke-on-Trent) and Wigan Casino. *** The Northern part of the name refers to where in the UK the popularity first grew. It all started in Northern England and the English Midlands in the late 1960s, based on a particular style of black American soul music. A large proportion of Northern soul's original audience came from within the 1960s mod subculture. Northern soul reached the peak of its popularity in the mid- to late-1970s. At this time, there were soul clubs in virtually every major town in the Midlands and the North of England. The three venues regarded as the most important in this decade were the Golden Torch in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent (1971 to 1972), Blackpool Mecca (1971 to 1979) and Wigan Casino (1973 to 1981). *** In the book Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: the history of the DJ, the authors describe Northern soul as "a genre built from failures", stating: "...Northern Soul was the music made by hundreds of singers and bands who were copying the Detroit sound of Motown pop. Most of the records were complete failures in their own time and place... but in Northern England from the end of the 1960s through to its heyday in the middle 1970s, were exhumed and exalted." Citation: Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton. It’s all play and no work on this week’s Extra Milestone, because Jason Read has returned to the show to discuss a trio of very different movies. We begin with a detailed exploration of Stanley Kubrick’s Horror masterpiece The Shining, complete with reflections on why the terror of it is so effective, analyses of the movie’s themes and mysteries, a discussion of why method acting is a flawed and unnecessary process, and even a few personal stories that relate to the movie. Afterward, we take on Joe Dante’s Gremlins, stopping along the way to discuss its implementation of cinematic language, its historical significance, and all of the darkly comedic chaos that comes with it. Finally, we cap off the show with a fittingly sporadic look at Dante’s oft-overlooked sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, which is one of the most entertaining movies either of us have ever seen, as well as being a knowing satire of culture stuffed with enough cameos and mania to last a lifetime. It’s a jam-packed Extra Milestone to continue the jam-packed month of June, and we hope it’s even more fun to listen to than it was to record. SHOW NOTES: 00:02:35 – The Shining 01:07:05 – Gremlins 01:31:30 – Gremlins 2: The New Batch NEXT WEEK: In what may be the most culturally significant pair of films discussed on Extra Milestone yet, I will be reuniting with Anthony Battaglia of Anyway, That’s All I Got to discuss Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and Irvin Kershner’s The Empire Strikes Back! Music in this Episode: Theme from Gremlins composed by Jerry Goldsmith, and “Midnight, the Stars and You” performed by Ray Noble and his Orchestra, with vocals by Al Bowlly. In this episode of the Things About Green Podcast we discuss various subjects ranging from the toxicity of certain women, men getting hurt, and Verzuz battles. This weeks lyrical breakdown is a double header with Carl Thomas "I Wish" and Jimmy Cozier "She's All I Got". We call Ques and Landon for some hot takes. Intro Song: World Went Crazy - "Lowell Park II" from the EP "Bad Influenced"
In what will go down as the very first triple header in Extra Milestone history, I am joined once again by Anyway, That's All I Got veteran Jason Read! Jason and I take a look at both the French New Wave and the work of Jean-Luc Godard with Breathless (1960), explore a fantastic and somewhat lesser-known horror classic with Eyes Without A Face (1960), and round out the show with an exploration of the Giallo subgenre and the work of Dario Argento with the fiendishly frightening Deep Red (1975). Although we went heavily into detail with Breathless, we took special care not to give too much away about the latter two films, so feel free to listen to those segments whether they are old favorites or completely new to you. It's a delightful series of conversations that traverses a broad section of the cinematic landscape, and we hope it's just as fun to listen to as it was to record! SHOW NOTES: 00:08:25 – Breathless 00:54:55 – Eyes Without A Face 01:25:40 – Deep Red Next week on Extra Milestone, tune in to hear Sam, Jon, Will, and special guest Emily Kubincanek discuss Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca (1940) and Jacques Becker's Le Trou (1960)! Music in this episode: The theme of Eyes Without A Face, arranged by Maurice Jarre; music from the trailers for Breathless and Deep Red. Sarah Kurchak has a new book out called “I 'Overcame' My Autism and All I Got was this Lousy Anxiety Disorder.” It's a somewhat provocative title and Sarah also has thoughts on the Autism has played in the Anti-Vax movement. She spoke with Russell about her life and the new book..
A Los Angeles-based vocalist, producer, and sketch comedian, Oliver Tree brings a colorful, scooter-loving persona to his indie pop- and hip-hop-informed dance music. A native of Santa Cruz, Tree emerged in October 2016 as a featured performer on the single "Forget It" by hometown EDM musician Getter. That same month, he released his first collaboration with DJ Whethan, the compassion anthem "When I'm Down." The song went viral, garnering millions of streams over the next year. A record deal with Atlantic followed, and in mid-2017 Tree issued the solo singles "Welcome to L.A.," "All I Got," and "Cheapskate." Another collaboration with Whethan, "Enemy," saw release in September 2017 before his own single, "Upside Down," arrived the first week of 2018. Those tracks landed on his Alien Boy EP, which was released via Atlantic Records that February. He quickly followed with additional singles such as "Movement" and the rock-tinged "Hurt." 2019 brought singles like "Fuck" and "Miracle Man," the latter of which was included on Tree's EP Do You Feel Me?.
There will never be another Swamp Dogg. At 77, Jerry Williams Jr. has had one of the most fascinating and diverse careers in popular music. It’s hard to believe the same man created the psychedelic funk of 1970’s Total Destruction to Your Mind, manage a young Dr. Dre, and penned the country standard, “She’s All I Got. While his career career and life have hit plenty of rough patches, he’ll be the first to admit that he’s been incredibly lucky when it comes to music. Covers and samples have helped keep his work relevant through the decades, even as he refused to play live. Last year, Williams’ embarked on the latest stage of his eclectic career with Love, Loss and Autotune, a new collection of song created with the help of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. The high profile released has seen the musician embraced by a new generation of fans drawn to his soulful tracks and biting humor.

This week on Anyway, That’s All I Got, we decided to talk about something a little more relaxed than what we’re used to and discuss some animated movie recommendations. Whether they’re underseen or underrated, we talk about the animated movies we wish would get more attention than they already do. We excluded anything by Disney or Pixar, since those are talked about quite often. Hosted by Sam Noland, Jason Read, and Anthony Battaglia! Question for you: What are some animated movies (excluding Disney and Pixar) that you would recommend? Also, give us your defense for why Spirited Away is great (if you think it is). We can't wait to read them! From Morrissey to Laurence Olivier, public figures through history have channelled shyness and stage-fright into their work. But is shyness a useful tool, or is uninhibited confidence a better way to navigate the modern world? Backstage at the Southbank Centre’s ‘Being A Man’ festival, social and cultural historian Joe Moran talks to Olly about the implicit difficulty of silence, the internal monologues that plague him in social situations, and how shy people can weaponise irony, distance and aloofness to their advantage. His book, ‘Shrinking Violets: A Field Guide to Shyness’, is out now. Meanwhile, over in The Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart explains how your car can interact with your ‘environmental happenings’, previews a forthcoming political bout, and reveals where you can buy a ‘Breaking Bad’ lego set. And, down The Foxhole, Alix Fox ponders why she is having some difficulty finding the perfect partner, and offers some advice for a listener whose partner suffers from vaginismus. "Good Up In My Tea" aka "Killer Clowning Around" We opened this episode with "All I Got" off Sauce's new cd "13 Going On 30" which is still free to download on soysaucesound.com We talked about Slamborghini's debate with Sam Slade from the previous show, about some more people we've pissed off, and learned how to deal with the Killer Clowns plaguing our nation. Musician Joey Taylor came back on the show and performed some more amazing songs for us. We interviewed Comedian Nick Leidl, Comedian Kevin Elliot, our good friend and radio personality Edward White, and Comedian Roger Nelson. It was a great show!
PART 1 OF 2: R&B cult favorite Jerry “Swamp Dogg” Williams is best known as the co-writer, with Gary U.S. Bonds, of the cross-genre classic, “She’s All I Got,” which became a Top 10 R&B single for Freddie North and a #2 country hit for Johnny Paycheck in 1971. Tracy Byrd recorded it in 1996, hitting #4 on Billboard’s Country rankings and introducing the song to a new generation of fans. Williams’ career began in 1954 when, at the age of 12, he made his first record, “HTD Blues.” He found success in the 1960s, recording the Top 40 R&B hit “Baby You’re My Everything” under the name Little Jerry Williams, and writing songs for other artists, including Gene Pitney’s Top 20 Pop single, “She’s a Heartbreaker.” He became Atlantic Records’ first African American staff producer in 1968, but left the following year to pursue independent projects in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. His debut LP, Total Destruction to Your Mind, was eventually certified Gold, while subsequent releases, including Gag a Maggott, I’m Not Selling Out – I’m Buying In, An Awful Christmas and a Lousy New Year, and The White Man Made Me Do It have earned considerable accolades among underground music lovers and earned Swamp what one journalist described as “a cultural niche somewhere between Rudy Ray Moore and Frank Zappa.” In recent years, his vast catalog has been sampled by Kid Rock, Talib Kweli, DMX, and others.

We want to thank all the artist who put out such great music that we have all been enjoying all these years. Music that changes peoples lives and encourages the walk of faith. Music that builds up the believer and talks about faith and the love of Jesus Christ not music that degrades women and leads our young men down the road to destruction. Ok, in a nutshell I had some extra “space” for shows that would expire the end of May and wanted to do an extra long and superior quality show before it struck midnight on May 31st. I went to upload the show and it stated that it was already JUNE!!! Well, I replaced the show … leaving it in its original length but lower quality so it wouldn’t take up too much of my allotted June bandwidth… so, if you hear me say on the show that the bandwidth/quality is better…IT IS THE SAME AS USUAL. OK? Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementWhile many people may claim to know Chris’ sound, with their focus on continually labeling him one thing or another, Chris is equally as focused on his efforts to push back the musical boundaries. It is testament to the man that he continues to develop his sound and musical direction, after all, as the man says himself “I just like to play good underground music, I don’t limit myself.”It is artists such as Chris Fortier who are inextricably linked to the underground dance music scene that are the genuinely pushing the sound forward. Chris’ determination to continue to push the envelope can be seen in all aspects of his career. Proof of this can be found on his recent triple CD compilation Balance and his recent solo production under the 40oz moniker and his stellar debut artist album As Long As The Moment Exits. The Balance CD genuinely offers something exciting and underground to the current stale compilation market. Boasting tracks from across the musical spectrum like David Gilmore Girls, Global Communication and Floppy Sounds through to Slam, Matthew Jonson, Rabbit in the Moon and Bent. It is little wonder the CD was name checked for compilation of the year by numerous international press publications.Under his 40oz production guise Chris has released the several EPs that musically could fit comfortably on labels such as Cocoon, Kompakt or Get Physical. Further remixes of Alexi Delano, Joshua Collins, Lee Burridge, Freaky Chakra and John Selway show Chris’ genre defying sound at it’s underground best. Taking this a step further in 2007, his debut artist album was released to countless plaudits and impeccable praise. Not satisfied with status quo, look for the boundaries to continue to be pressed and pushed with each coming musical excursion. With a DJ career spanning 15 plus years, he has continually been a crowd favourite, confirmed by his very first residency at the legendary “Aahz” in Orlando through to more recent residencies at The Cross in London and at Twilo in New York. Since a debut European tour in 1997, Chris has gone on to consistently tour the globe behind numerous singles, remixes and no less than 9 mix albums. You can catch him as easily in Tokyo as in Buenos Aires and all points in between on any given weekend. To those that know Fortier’s history, they know to expect plenty more to come, for those that are just getting initiated, Welcome!About Fade Records:Fade Records was created out of necessity in 1993. At the helm is American DJ Chris Fortier. Chris and studio partner, Neil Kolo, needed an outlet to release the tracks they were producing together. With not many options in the States, it seemed obvious to start a label and create the opportunities themselves. The first release was in 1994 called "...For All the People". This track gave them a voice and platform for the future productions. The next three tracks, "All I Got", "Separation" and "So Good" were more highly praised and received heavy support from the biggest DJs out there, including Sasha, John Digweed and Dave Seaman. Equal support came from the USA from Kimball Collins, DJ Icey and John Debo as well as the brand new Mixmag USA (which eventually would be known as Mixer). This great support put the duo on the map and started every label in the UK demanding their talents for remix duties. After several years of building their profile through remixes and the odd single, Chris wanted to re-launch the label in the hopes to help discover and cultivate new talent from America. Steve Porter was the man for this job as Chris discovered him at age 17. With the productions of Steve Porter and others like Derek Howell, Royal Sapien, Funk Harmony Park & Tonepushers, the label is as strong as ever and having great success worldwide. www.faderecords.comSpecial Thanks to Mr Chris Fortier.
Rod B. & Alvaro Garfunk bring you the Miami Underground MovementTHE FADE STORY…FADE was formed in the summer of 1993 when Neil Kolo, a young studio engineer, introduced himself to Chris Fortier, a young resident DJ at the infamous "Marz" club in Cocoa Beach, FL, and passed on a tape of some of the material he had been working on. Chris, very enthused by what he had heard, expressed his interest in the idea of working together and learning about how to produce tracks of his own like the ones he had been playing up and down the East Coast of America. The two instantly clicked and a friendship was formed. Two years later, the pair released their first record titled "...For All The People". They Floated a few one-sided promos out to gauge reaction. Meanwhile, a second track was completed, "All I Got". The two tracks were then combined as a double A-sided release, which was the first release on FADE Records, the label that Chris owns and operates. "All I Got" caught the attention of UK duo Chris & James, who helped it get signed to Mushroom Records where James was working as an A & R representative. In August of 1995, Fade released two new singles, "So Good" and "Separation". The Two Tracks received massive support from some of the biggest DJs around including their biggest inspiration, SASHA. The records became underground hits and quickly sold out. Soon after, Glasgow’s Limbo Records signed the duo for a multi-album record deal in February 1996.This success opened the door for the boys to move into the realm of remixing. First, they did remixes for friends John Debo and DJ Icey. This gave them more exposure and experience and led to remixes for Stress records and Sony’s S3 label. The Summer of 1996 brought new challenges. Now they were going to get a chance to work on more vocal oriented songs. One such song was Sam Mollison’s "Cry". When finished, the "Cry" remix set a new standard for Fade and the quality of tracks they could produce. Dave Seaman heard "Cry" and quickly added it to his Essential Mix for England’s Radio 1 FM and his Renaissance Volume 4 mix compilation on Network Records. With this surge of notoriety, DMC’s Guy Ornadel contacted Chris & Neil to remix Future Force’s "What You Want" for DMC’s Remix Culture. Rising to another level, Fade delivered one of the progressive anthems of 1996 winning Remix and Remixer of the Year in Australia. This gave way to the chance to remix Marathon’s "Movin" and Viola Wills "It’s My Pleasure", two of the guys all time favorite tracks, as well as getting the chance to remix another big influence, BT, for his song "Quark".1997 saw the boys getting attention from major labels for remixes, as well as writing and producing their own more vocal based material under the guises of Fade and Nutribe. They released their first vocal track with singer Dauby Talles called "No Resolve". This was another pinnacle in their rising careers. "No Resolve" saw heavy play from John Digweed on the Northern Exposure 2 Tour, climbed as high as #12 in the Cool Cuts Chart and has become a Florida club anthem.1998 saw Chris and Neil further expanding their horizons by doing remix work for more Indie style bands and artists like Sarah McLachlan and Delerium. The Delerium which features Sarah McLachlan on vocals and has been tearing up clubland since the first time heard at Renaissance in Ibiza when John Digweed dropped it at the closing party. Sasha quickly rang up for a copy and the tune soon became an anthem for the pair at every gig including Twilo. It even had Sasha opening and closing his sets with it at Cream and Tyrant. With the rest of clubland searching for it, Delerium debuted and #5 in MixMag Update’s Buzz Chart and appeared on the Northern Exposure 3 CD. This was truly a high point for Chris and Neil in their ever rising careers. 1998 also saw the release of "Sanctuaries" The Fade Records Collection. a collection of work including a number of unreleased remixes and original productions. The CD was released in conjunction with Universal Music.Throughout ’99 and 2000, the duo worked on their debut artist album and saw the release of their "Silence" remix released in Australia. The record was an instant hit and went to #6 in the National chart and rose to Platinum status (70, 000 units sold) in Australia alone. It also went to #1 in Holland, Belgium and Ireland, with total sales over One Million Units. Also completed was another mixed CD, mixed as Fade, called "Anthems of Progressive House: Limbo Records" and was released in November 2000. Chris made the move to New York City where he now calls home.During 2001 the pair continued their prolific remix work for new artists Andy Hunter, Lunik (Delerium) and Balligomingo. They have also produced tracks and remixes for established artists like Tiesto and Sarah McLachlan again. For the past 6 years, both Neil and Chris have been concentrating on solo work. One day they may reunite, but only time will tell.www.FadeRecords.com
