Josef Winkler zaseda mesto v vrsti velikih koroških avtorjev prejšnjega in tega stoletja, kot so Peter Handke, Florjan Lipuš, Ingeborg Bachmann, Robert Musil, Gert Jonke, Maja Haderlap in drugi. Čeprav je bil rojen v severnem delu Koroške, kakih sto kilometrov od slovenske manjšine, je zaslužen, da se velika avstrijska državna nagrada za literaturo, največje umetniško priznanje republike Avstrije, ne podeljuje več le za literaturo izključno v nemškem jeziku. Tako jo je leta 2018 po njegovi zaslugi prejel Florjan Lipuš. Literatura Josefa Winklerja, rojenega v zakotni koroški vasi, je tako kot pri drugih avtorjih in avtoricah avstrijske Koroške precej zaznamovana z okoljem, iz katerega izhaja. Čeprav je novela Natura morta postavljena v sosednjo Italijo, v Rim, v njej odsevajo teme, ki pisatelja tako in drugače zaznamujejo že vse življenje: vsakdanja beda, verska zlaganost in predvsem smrt. Pisatelj pravi, da sta ga je že ob zgodnjem prebiranju svetovnih klasikov vedno zanimala slog in oblika pisateljeve govorice, veliko manj pa sama zgodba. To je čutiti tudi v noveli Natura morta, ki jo gradi predvsem izjemno koncizna in neposredna pripoved. Bralci sledimo dnevu 16-letnega postavnega prodajalca rib Piccoletta, ki pa je le ena od figur veličastne baročne slike. »Med mladimi cigankami, ki so posedale na tleh in se kratkočasile s svojimi otroki, je bilo tudi dekle, ki je prodajalo šampon za lase in imelo na podlakti tetovirano modro srce. Medtem ko je visoko dvigovala in ponujala rumen jajčni šampon, je otroku, ki ji je počez ležal v naročju, glavica visela čez njeno stegno. Pred stojnico se je ustavila ženska z majhno, do kože postriženo psičko, mešanico jazbečarja in pinča. Samo na ušesih in na repu je psička še imela nekaj dlake, celo seske je imela gladko obrite. Mlad prodajalec kokošjega mesa si je s ključnico in privzdignjeno ramo pritiskal telefon k licu in ušesu, med pogovorom pa še živi kokoši, ki je s široko razprtim kljunom srepela predse, odsekal glavo. Krvavečo glavo je odvrgel k drugim na tleh ležečim kokošjim glavam in krempljem. V trebuh otrebljene kokoši je v smehu – v zabavo drugih prodajalcev mesa – stlačil pest češenj.« Vrtinec približno stotih kvadratnih metrov v središču Rima, med trgom Vittoria Emanueleja in vrati bazilike sv. Petra v Vatikanu, je opisan filigransko, v svoji neposrednosti na trenutke tudi neprijetno. S prvo besedo bralci postanemo del dogajanja v noveli: na tržnici, v gostilni, prodajalni spominkov, pred cerkvijo in v njej. Pisano tržnico, polno mrtvih in umirajočih najrazličnejših živali, gnilega sadja in bizarnih likov, ki prodajajo, kupujejo, prosjačijo, prek mikroskopiskih naturalističnih opisov lahko začutimo, zavohamo, zaslišimo. Tako kot je med njimi čutiti spolno poželenje ter prikrito in odkrito erotiko, se po ulicah pretakajo živalska kri in žolč, sok zrelega sadja, blagoslovljena voda in sperma. Sobivanje svetega in vsakdanjega v Winklerjevih besedah doseže nov nivo. Fluorescentna razpela in plastični rožni venci sobivajo z redovnicami, ki na tržnici kupujejo zrelo sadje in so, tako kot vse drugo, predmet pohote mimoidočih obiskovalcev, ki se pred vrati cerkve slačijo in si natikajo dolge hlače, da bi spodobno oblečeni stopili v cerkev. Zelo pomembna tema, ki je Josefa Winklerja zaznamovala že v otroški dobi in se pojavi prav v vseh njegovih literarnih delih, pa je smrt. V skladu z zakonitostmi novele nas presenetljiv smrtni dogodek ustavi tudi v Naturi morte, ustavi pa tudi vrtinec dogajanja na trgu. Truplo postane strašljiv del naslikanega tihožitja, le nekaj metrov oddaljena Michelangelova Pietá in neusahljiv dež pa dobita nove razsežnosti, ki prepad med svetim in vsakdanjim zamajeta v novem odtenku.
