This episode explores Anatomy of a Murder (1959), the legendary courtroom drama produced and directed by Otto Preminger. The film features an outstanding cast, including Jimmy Stewart, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, George C. Scott, and Eve Arden. It also includes the real-life Joseph N. Welch, who played a key role in finally taking down Senator Joseph McCarthy during the Army-McCarthy hearings of 1954. The film is widely regarded as one of the best courtroom dramas in the history of cinema. Joshua Dratel, a leading criminal defense attorney, joins as my guest expert to help examine this memorable film and to break down  its timeless insights into the American criminal trial.Timestamps:0:00     Introduction4:30     What makes a great courtroom drama?8:50     Paul Biegler (Jimmy Stewart) interviews his client (Ben Gazzara) 16:04   Coming up with the defense of “irresistible impulse”19:00   The role of cross-examination 26:22   Biegler (Jimmy Stewart) gets his defense in through cross-examination29:08   The motive and the act in criminal law33:43   Managing a defendant's family 38:58   Dressing your client for court40:57   Attacking the victim: who's on trial here? 43:18   Claude Dancer (George C. Notes:Fable referenced a quote by Richard Price about approaching writing in a war context. Here is that full quote:- “You don't write about the horrors of war. No. You write about a kid's burnt socks lying in the road.”The Verbivore references a scene from the animated Disney movie Mulan where a doll stands in for the loss of an innocent child in the war with the Huns. Here is a link to the scene which introduces that story element:- Mulan - The Huns (Shang Yu is approaching) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqP95URub_oThe Verbivore mentions the aspect of human psychology that it is easier to relate and empathize with an individual than with a large group of people. The example used was that you can feel sorry for one dog that has had it’s tail stepped on, but what if you are told that thousands of dogs have had their tails stepped on. This is known as Psychic numbing. Here is an article if you are interesting in researching into this further:- "If I look at the mass I will never act": Psychic numbing and genocide http://journal.sjdm.org/7303a/jdm7303a.htmThe Verbivore references the idea of ensign redshirts in Star Trek, which in the fandom refers to characters who are expendable and are killed off to up the tension and stakes in a given storyline. The Verbivore brings up a quote from the disorienting opening of the novel The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Here is that full quote:- “The knife had done almost everything it was brought to that house to do, and both the blade and the handle were wet.”We used many different resources to prepare for this episode including our own experience. In this essay, I discuss Hip Hop (of course), Gangs and Gang Culture, and why today's artist think they need to tie both to be taken serious when, in reality, they don't. Also, peace to the @Nerdwriter1 for inspiring how to bring words to life with essays. Enjoy!!! Sources: - The Brilliant Idiots "You Decide?!" Two friends. Separated by the second largest body of fresh water in North America. But not even that will stop them from asking stupid bullshit like: Did your mom write Black Sabbath's Iron Man? We done gone went to see Guardians 2 together in order to talk about it on our little podcast, like a proper date. It turned out great, as did one man's quest to build an iPhone and the prospect of alien life being out there, somewhere. Plus, as ABSOLUTELY ALWAYS, Tom's Good News is... good. I don't know if we need to say this, but we recorded the episode before Zack Snyder decided to move away from Justice League under pretty brave and tough circumstances, with Joss Whedon stepping in, so when we're talking about DC just taking Marvel filmmakers, we're not being intentionally insensitive. Thanks for listening! You can find us on other sites at @benjionelung and @bytereview - have you ever built an iPhone? Did you like Guardians of The Galaxy 2? Do you work for Apple and want to actually sponsor Tom's reviews? He's open to it! Thanks to Tony Thaxton for our theme! In Episode 47 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. celebrates the big-screen return of Oscar winner Goldie Hawn and the 25th anniversary of her 1992 black comedy Death Becomes Her, directed by Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Back to the Future) and co-starring Meryl Streep, Bruce Willis and Isabella Rossellini.  Then, it's on to Hawn's newest release, which teams the actress with Amy Schumer for director Jonathan Levine's (50/50, Warm Bodies) R-rated comedy Snatched. Stay Gold(ie)! Snatched synopsis, courtesy of 20th Century Fox: After her boyfriend dumps her on the eve of their exotic vacation, impetuous dreamer Emily Middleton (Amy Schumer) persuades her ultra-cautious mother, Linda (Goldie Hawn) to travel with her to paradise. Polar opposites, Emily and Linda realize that working through their differences as mother and daughter - in unpredictable, hilarious fashion - is the only way to escape the wildly outrageous jungle adventure they have fallen into.   Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn star in the new comedy adventure SNATCHED, which also features Ike Barinholtz ("Neighbors"), Wanda Sykes ("Bad Moms") and Joan Cusack ("Working Girl"). We're excited to hear your feedback as the show continues to evolve. As usual, the podcast does feature explicit language and, as such, is best considered NSFW. Thanks for listening!
