2024's Road House is surprisingly watchable, even if it pales in comparison to the original. Jake Gyllenhaal does a serviceable job as Elwood Dalton—the bouncer with a penchant for violence but a heart of gold. And the general premise of a man who busts up bar fights for a living is still wildly entertaining. Where this one stumbles is the odd use of CGI to make the fights appear more "brutal." It's often distracting and offputting. Not distracting enough, though, to make you forget how bland and boring Billy Magnussen's villainous Brandt is. He lacks any semblance of the sleaze Ben Gazzara brought as Brad Wesley. Honestly, and it is baffling to type this, the movie is kind of saved by the ludicrous performance of Conor McGregor. He may be high as hell on blow, but he definitely understands the assignment. Now, sit back, get belligerent with an Orange Blossom Pilsner2 from Orange Blossom Brewing Co., and take it outside! It's a film of profound beauty, humor and humanity, and although Gallo claims the movie is non-autobiographical, it nonetheless draws from deep reservoirs of personal experience in its depiction of alienation and the grace that can bring broken people back from the precipice. We discuss the career of Vincent Gallo and his status as perpetual provocateur, often exchanging barbs with fellow flimmakers and critics alike, including a notorious saga with the late Roger Ebert. Then, we talk about the film's depthful exploration of its thoroughly unlikable character as portrayed by Gallo, and how he manages to make Billy Brown a remarkably captivating misanthrope through his particular manner and distinctive speaking cadence. Finally, we discuss Gallo's recent foray into the MAGA movement and adjacent vestiges of the right, and why his work's portrayal of ecstatic revelation feels antithetical to the politics of resentment that defines the modern conservative movement.Follow John Semley on Twitter. Right smack in the middle of his run of playing James Bond in four consecutive movies, Pierce Brosnan took a SLIGHT detour in this remake of a sorta-classic from 1968, the romantic thriller of the same name starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. This is a somewhat modernized remake as we follow the exploits of a billionaire playboy named Thomas Crown (Brosnan) who also moonlights as an art thief....and the crafty art bounty hunter who's on his tail (in more ways than one) Catherine Banning played by Rene Russo. And wouldn't you know it...these two take a liking for each other. Not only that but could THIS be the best Bond-life performance ever given by Brosnan, even better than when he actually played bond? Inquiring minds want to know in this breezy romantic caper directed by John McTiernan. Yes the SAME McTiernan who had directed action classics such as Predator and Die Hard more than a decade prior....who knew that he also had a romantic streak? :) Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
A must see Peter Bogdanovich directed film, starting Ben Gazzara as a charismatic and charming pimp living in Singapore.
Today, we go to Singapore with Peter Bogdanovich. Saint Jack is his 1979 film about Ben Gazzara as an American expat pimp with a heart of gold, making it work in the far east. A surprising film that deals equal hands of tenderness and alienation, an underrated classic in his filmography. Then, on MiTM, we get into Turkish Delight, Tess, and Escape from the Planet of the Apes. 00:00 - Saint Jack 29:35 - Malcolm in the Middle 46:32 - email
We wrap up the third season of Columbo with a solid episode wherein Columbo (Peter Falk) is put on the case of a pair of murders including the death of police commissioner (Richard Kiley)'s wife. Written by Peter S. Fischer, the episode was directed by Falk's friend Ben Gazzara.
This month we're just wild about Siobhan Fallon Hogan. You Might Know Her From Men In Black, Forrest Gump, Dancer in the Dark, Dogville, The House That Jack Built, Shelter in Solitude, Rushed, Holes, Seinfeld, and Saturday Night Live. Siobhan gave us all the goods: from iconic dialect work in your favorite movies to her years-long collaborations with Lars von Trier. Siobhan spilled on doing bits while performing in Shakespeare in the Park, having fart competitions with Ben Gazzara on the set of Dogville, and getting horrifically killed by Matt Dillon in The House That Jack Built. We also got to talk about her turn as a screenwriter of two indie films: Rushed and Shelter in Solitude (both avail to stream now), and how her Catholic values inform all her work. A true delight from start to finish! Just feel better knowing that Lauren Bacall once asked, “Will we ever work again?” and know you are not alone! Love you mean it! Also, please note we recorded this before we both texted each other “O.J. Simpson is dead!” so yeah, O.J. Simpson is dead and maybe we conjured it by talking about his acting and prison work. *** Sorry for this being released again, and out of order. The original got deleted somehow... sorry again*** Patrick Swayze's career hit its peak in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, cementing his status as a Hollywood hearthrob. In the span of five years from 1987 to 1991, he starred in megahits Dirty Dancing, Ghost, Point Break, and this 1989 movie about a bouncer hired to clean up a rowdy honkytonk. Co-starring Kelly Lynch, Sam Elliot, Ben Gazzara and Kevin Tighe, the film was an instant Eighties classic despite not lighting up the box office and earning mostly-negative reviews at time of release. Roger Ebert wrote, “This is not a good movie. But viewed in the right frame of mind, it is not a boring one, either.” While it only grossed about $60 million at the box office, estimates on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray sales and cable/streaming licenses total north of $200 million. The film also earned a remake this year - which we'll be talking about next week! We're pulling up to the bar - and breaking it - with Road House! This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we're leaping head first into the bone-cracking, tooth-spitting, throat-ripping and monster-trucking action of the Road House movies! Both of them! That's the original 1989 version directed by Rowdy Herrington and starring Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliot, Kelly Lynch, Ben Gazzara, Kevin Tighe, Marshall Teague, Julie Michaels, Red West, Kathleen Wilhoite and blink and you'll miss him, Keith David. As compared to the 2024 remake directed by Doug Liman and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor McGregor, Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Post Malone, Arturo Castro & Joaquim de Almeida. My tougher n' leather crew today is made up of Roseanne Caputi, George Young, David Johnson DMD and although we had to beg him back, the bruiser himself, Gordon Alex Robertson! Before we bite into all that throat-ripping goodness, the synopses: Road House ‘89 is an epic tale of real estate fraud, malfeasance, racketeering and monster truck mayhem when zen, philosophizing Big City club bouncer Dalton is hired by Missouri bar owner Frank Tilgheman to clean up his honky tonk club The Double Deuce. Getting top dollar of 5k a week, Dalton packs up and moves to the town of Jasper to get things moving. After beating up a few goons and cutting the pork out of the Double D, Dalton runs afoul of a local business tycoon, the most Italian looking Brad Wesley you've ever seen. Wesley wants the Double Deuce for his own purposes and he also wants Dalton's new girlfriend, the beautiful and brainy Dr. Elizabeth “Doc” Clay as his own. So Wesley's plan: KILL DALTON! Dalton enlists the aid of his friend and mentor Wade Garrett to help in the ensuing ruckus, but Garrett's skills are no match for Wesley's evil. Wesley kills Wade in doing so unleashes the raging raw brute force of a one man army that is…DALTON! Road House 24' basically follows the same plot as the original except it moves the locale to Florida and makes Dalton an ex-MMA star and gives him the first name Elwood. And speed boats take the place of Monster Trucks. And that's about it. Who wins the smackdown? We review the original trash masterpiece starring Patrick Swayze, Ben Gazzara, and Kelly Lynch
Thirty-five years ago this May, we first saw the release of a relatively small action drama starring then movie star Patrick Swayze as THE Greatest Bouncer/Cooler around who has been hired to clean up a troubled roadside bar in Missouri named the Double Deuce. The character's name was Dalton and he DID clean up that bar along with the surrounding town of Jasper, defeating the evil Brad Wesley played by Ben Gazzara. Directed by Rowdy Herrington, the movie opened to mediocre reviews and middling box office....but then over time thanks to strong play on cable and even stronger video sales, it became a beloved cult hit. Now decades later, that original film has garnered such a devoted following that director Doug Liman (Swingers, The Bourne Identity) has decided to remake it in a modern context, this time with acclaimed actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Ambulance, Love and Other Drugs) now playing Dalton as a former MMA fighter who has been hired to be a bouncer. The story is now set in the Florida Keys and the main villains are now played by Billy Magnussen and former MMA fighter Connor McGregor. Let's review BOTH films and see just how nicely they compare.....until it's time to NOT be Nice. ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

March is almost complete and we've got another weekend of streaming releases to talk about. First up we've got the remake of Road House, the 80's classic starring Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliott & Ben Gazzara. This time, Amazon is producing with Doug Liman starring, with Jake Gyllenhaal as the titular Dalton and a supporting cast consisting of Daniela Melchior, Jessica Williams, Lukas Gage, Billy Magnussen & Conor McGregor making his big screen debut. Then we've got the next show from David Benioff & D. B. Weiss of Game of Thrones fame, the 3 Body Problem. This time they're with Netflix, with the adaptation of the novel by the same name from author Liu Cixin, starring Jovan Adepo, Rosalind Chao, Eiza Gonzalez, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp and Benedict Wong, along with returning Game of Thrones alumni John Bradley, Liam Cunningham & Jonathan Pryce. Dom and Luk break down these two massive streaming drops and more on this week's episode of the #talkintvpodcast --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/talkintvpodcastgmailcom/support
To celebrate the release of the new Road House on Amazon this week, Chris, along with special guests Justin and Addam watched the original 1989 Road House for the latest Everything Action Commentary.Starring Patrick Swayze as America's greatest bouncer, Dalton, he's hired to try and clean up the Double Deuce, a bar where "they sweep up the eyeballs at the end of the night". While training a crew of bouncers to make the bar safer, Dalton runs afoul of local businessman Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara), who is terrorizing businesses like the Double Deuce to try and drive them out of business so he can build a massive shopping complex. While watching the movie, the guys talk about what it's like for Justin to see the movie for the first time, what genre the movie should fall into, how Dalton's NYU philosophy degree helps him fight, it's similarities to Footloose, Dalton's ridiculous barn loft and more. You can watch Road House on Prime Video or Max and watch along with the Everything Action crew.We want to hear your comments and feedback. Jason & Ryan are called before judge and jury to defend their positions on Otto Preminger's 1959 courtroom drama Anatomy of a Murder starring Jimmy Stewart, George C. Scott, Ben Gazzara, and Lee Remick.
With his extremely '80s thriller Going In now available on digital, actor and filmmaker Evan Rissi is here to celebrate one of the films that inspired it: Road House, the 1989 action drama starring Patrick Swayze as the world's greatest bouncer and Ben Gazzara as the world's pettiest crimelord. Your genial host Norm Wilner would never leave you without an episode over the holidays.
Felicia is joined by Vanya Garraway to chat about John Cassavetes' neo-noir classic, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976). We chat about the differences between the director's and theatrical cut, and how audiences are often not ready for certain films and they require time to age to be appreciated. We also chat about Ben Gazzara's performance as Cosmo, and the dynamic performance he gave as the gambling addict, and strip club owner Cosmo. Along with how static the the camera is, as it watches the characters, and how the handheld camera comes into play during the action sequences. Cassavetes often made films about the home and the people in it, this was his first foray into a crime film and there's a reason why it's one of his most well known pictures. Film writer, editor, and podcaster Jake Tropila joins from Los Angeles to discuss the Coen Brothers' 1998 comedy 'The Big Lebowski', starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Though middlingly received both critically and commercially upon release, the film has gone on to become a genuine cult classic, launching a cottage industry of fan screenings, conventions, and even a religion. We discuss the film's patchwork of influences, including larger-than-life characters withing the Coens' orbit and the works of author Raymond Chandler, especially as adapted by Robert Altman for his 1973 film 'The Long Goodbye'. Then we discuss the film's unrivaled cast, including a superb John Goodman, who turns in an awards-caliber performance as the gun-toting, militant bowling enthusiast Walter Sobchak. Finally, we discuss the film's windy, inarticulable plot, and the way that its mechanics might conceal a deeper level of criticism about the sociopolitical landscape of America on the eve of The End of History. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Joel Thurm, Casting Director, Author, “Sex, Drugs and Pilot Season: Confessions of a Casting Director” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Joel Thurm, is a show business veteran whose name you may not know, but whose work you have most definitely seen and loved. For over 40 years, he was one of the most sought-after, powerful and respected casting directors in Hollywood. Starting in the early 70's, as a casting director at CBS, then casting TV shows for superstar producer Aaron Spelling, then becoming Senior Vice President of Talent and Casting at NBC for 10 years, and also serving as Vice President of Television Talent at Paramount Studios, our guest helped create entertainment that has brought countless hours of joy to millions of people around the world. On the big screen, he was responsible for casting 3 mega-hit movies: “Grease”, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Airplane”. And in the world of television, he cast dozens of hugely popular TV series including “Taxi”, “Fantasy Island”, “The Bob Newhart Show”, “Starsky & Hutch”, “Charlie's Angels”, “Cheers”, “Miami Vice”, “The Golden Girls”, “Seinfeld”, “L.A. Law”, “Hill Street Blues”, “Night Court” and believe me, I'm just scratching the surface. He produced and cast the Emmy award winning TV movie, “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble” starring John Travolta, as well as the 5-time Emmy award winning miniseries, “The Lives of Benjamin Franklin”, starring Melvyn Douglas and Michael Learned, and the Emmy award winning TV movie “The Gathering” starring Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton, as well as the 1988 TV remake of “Inherit the Wind” starring Kirk Douglas and Jason Robards, which won 3 Emmy awards. And my favourite of all his TV movies is “An Early Frost”, starring Gena Rowlands and Ben Gazzara, which was the first movie about AIDS, winning 4 Emmy awards. He was responsible for launching the careers of countless stars including Nick Nolte, John Ritter, David Hasselhoff, Amy Irving, James Woods, Lorenzo Lamas, Danny DeVito, Christina Hendricks and dozens more. And get this: HE was the one who cast Ted Danson in “Cheers”, and he was the one who cast the wonderful Georgia Engel to play Ted Baxter's wife in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”. And now, he's written a fascinating, entertaining and insightful memoir entitled, “Sex, Drugs and Pilot Season: Confessions of a Casting Director”. This week, we take a peek into the world of Robert M. Rubin, a New York–based collector of film scripts. An architectural and art historian by trade, Bob began buying rare and historical significant screenplays seriously in the 1990s, and has now amassed an archive of what he calls “exformation”—that is, the ephemera that was often discarded in the process of moviemaking, but now reveals hidden and forgotten histories. Film Comment editors Clinton Krute and Devika Girish sat down with Bob and bibliographer Erin McGuirl, who manages the collection, to leaf through some of these treasures. These include variant copies of classics like Citizen Kane and Notorious, editor Louis Lombardo's working scripts for Robert Altman's films, Ben Gazzara's personal copies of the script for The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, and much more. They delved into the ways in which this material—with its pictures, notations, and scribbles—challenges our understanding of auteurism and sheds light on the crucial roles played by script supervisors, secretaries, and writers in Hollywood. Stay tuned for supplementary photos of the collection, included in this week's edition of The Film Comment Letter. Subscribe here: https://www.filmcomment.com/newsletter-sign-up/
Book Vs. Movie: Cat on a Hot Tin RoofThe 1955 Play Vs. the 1958 Classic FilmThe Margos are feeling very Southern in this episode devoted to the work of Tennessee Williams and his personal favorite work--Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The 1955 play was based on his 1952 short story “Three Plays of a Summer Game” and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama during its Broadway debut. The story of the Pollitt family in the Mississippi Delta and their personal grievances and torturous secrets was considered incredibly raw and racy for the conservative 1950s. The 1955 play was directed by Elia Kazan and starred future Dallas star Barbara Bel Geddes as Maggie “The Cat” Pollitt and Ben Gazzara as Brick Pollitt. Burl Ives (“Big Daddy”) and Madeleine Sherwood (“Sister Woman”) would go on to star in the film adaptation in 1958. Bel Geddes and Kazan were nominated for the Tony Award in the original production, and the themes of homophobia, family bonds, and sexism excited audiences then and to this day. The film was directed and adapted by Richard Brooks during a time known as the “Hays Code,” which meant the homosexual yearnings expressed by Brick Pollitt (played by Paul Newman in the movie) for his recently deceased best friend Skipper had to be downplayed. Also, the character of Maggie (Elizabeth Taylor in an Academy Award-winning performance) is more toned down and “likable” to ensure not to offend movie-goer sensitivities. What are the other differences between the original play and the film? Which version did the Margos like better? Have a listen! In this ep the Margos discuss:Playwright Tennessee Williams and how this particular story evolvedThe censoring of the original work to filmWhy the play endures. The cast of the 1958 film: Elizabeth Taylor (Maggie Pollitt,) Paul Newman (Brick Pollitt,) Burl Ives (“Big Daddy” Pollitt,) Jack Carson (Gooper Pollitt,) Judith Anderson (“Big Momma” Pollitt,) Madeleine Sherwood (“Sister Woman” Pollitt,) Larry Gates (Dr. Baugh) and Vaughn Taylor as Deacon Davis.Clips used:Maggie & Brick talk about SkipperCat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958 trailer)Ben Gazarra and 1955 clip Cat on a Hot Tin RoofBrick and Big Daddy“Mendacity”Music: Charles Wollcott Book Vs. This episode explores Anatomy of a Murder (1959), the legendary courtroom drama produced and directed by Otto Preminger. The film features an outstanding cast, including Jimmy Stewart, Lee Remick, Ben Gazzara, George C. Scott, and Eve Arden. It also includes the real-life Joseph N. Welch, who played a key role in finally taking down Senator Joseph McCarthy during the Army-McCarthy hearings of 1954. The film is widely regarded as one of the best courtroom dramas in the history of cinema. Joshua Dratel, a leading criminal defense attorney, joins as my guest expert to help examine this memorable film and to break down its timeless insights into the American criminal trial.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction4:30 What makes a great courtroom drama?8:50 Paul Biegler (Jimmy Stewart) interviews his client (Ben Gazzara) 16:04 Coming up with the defense of “irresistible impulse”19:00 The role of cross-examination 26:22 Biegler (Jimmy Stewart) gets his defense in through cross-examination29:08 The motive and the act in criminal law33:43 Managing a defendant's family 38:58 Dressing your client for court40:57 Attacking the victim: who's on trial here? 43:18 Claude Dancer (George C. We celebrate Ben Gazzara - sort of. First up is "Saint Jack" (1979), a wonderful Peter Bogdanovich film that seems to be written for Gazzara. The story of an American wanting nothing more than to open a brothel in Singapore. We loved this film and agree that it is as underrated as they come. Our second feature is not really a Ben Gazzara film, but he's in it for a brief time. David Mamet's "The Spanish Prisoner" (1997) is another con-artist yarn that is boring, miscast and extremely predictable. Next, chess films with "Fresh" (1994) and "Critical Thinking" (2020).Have your own recommendations? Contact the show:24theroadshow@gmail.com
The Spanish Prisoner is a film that keeps the audience on it's toes. Written and directed by David Mamet and released in 1997 is largely set in New York City. The synopsis as curated from IMDB.com states “An employee of a corporation with a lucrative secret process is tempted to betray it. But there's more to it than that.” This one confused us a bit. It stars Campbell Scott, Ben Gazzara, Steve Martin and Rebecca Pidgeon. Guess the Monthly Theme for 2023 Contest The Rules: Throughout the month you may guess the theme as many times as you want to. Teenage Killers as our theme. "The Boys Next Door" (1985) is the story about two outcasts who take a deadly road trip the day after they graduate from high school. The two leads, played by Maxwell Caulfield and Charlie Sheen, are good in a predictable story that doesn't carry the punch our second film has. Gus Van Sant's "Elephant" (2003) is based school shootings at Columbine. An unusual film to say the least, it takes it's time to set everything up for a terrifying ending, but that's what makes it so good. Next time, Ben Gazzara is our theme with "Saint Jack" (1979) and "The Spanish Prisoner" (1997). Have your own recommendations? Contact the show:24theroadshow@gmail.com

The Big Lebowski (/ləˈbaʊski/) is a 1998 crime comedy film written, produced, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. It stars Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski, a Los Angeles slacker and avid bowler. He is assaulted as a result of mistaken identity, then learns that a millionaire also named Jeffrey Lebowski (David Huddleston) was the intended victim. The millionaire Lebowski's trophy wife is kidnapped, and millionaire Lebowski commissions The Dude to deliver the ransom to secure her release; the plan goes awry when the Dude's friend Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) schemes to keep the ransom money for himself. Sam Elliott, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tara Reid, David Thewlis, Peter Stormare, Jon Polito, and Ben Gazzara also appear, in supporting roles. The film is loosely inspired by the work of Raymond Chandler. Joel Coen stated, "We wanted to do a Chandler kind of story – how it moves episodically, and deals with the characters trying to unravel a mystery, as well as having a hopelessly complex plot that's ultimately unimportant."[5] The original score was composed by Carter Burwell, a longtime collaborator of the Coen brothers. The Big Lebowski received mixed reviews at the time of its release. Over time, reviews have become largely positive, and the film has become a cult favorite,[6] noted for its eccentric characters, comedic dream sequences, idiosyncratic dialogue, and eclectic soundtrack.[7] In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". A spin-off, titled The Jesus Rolls, was released in 2020, with Turturro reprising his role and also serving as writer and director.[8][9][10]WebsitePatreonTwitterFacebookInstagramRetro Latefee Podcast (@retrolatefeepod) • Instagram photos and videosTikTok ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

It's DIE HARD in a bar! (sort of). In this second episode, Phil and Liam analyze DIE HARD's influence on ROAD HOUSE (1989), the bar-brawling cult classic starring Patrick Swayze as a philosophical uberbouncer hired to clean up the world's most depraved drinking establishment. It's a movie filled with a surprising amount of ‘DIE HARD DNA', giving Phil and Liam plenty to discuss. Amongst other things, the boys also examine the film's Kurosawa connections, rhapsodize over Sam Elliott (whom they suspect to be an immortal) and discuss the cinematic significance of casting the legendary Ben Gazzara as the movie's charismatic villain Brad Wesley. This week's trivia quiz also unearths some fascinating tidbits about 1980s popular culture. This HBO movie is a hidden gem from 2002, despite earning a pair of best supporting Emmy's for film legends Gena Rowlands and Ben Gazzara, a nomination for Juliette Lewis, and one very deserved Golden Globe for star Uma Thurman. Beautifully directed by Mira Nair (of "Monsoon Wedding"!), "Hysterical Blindness" is a heartbreaking slice of Debby Miller's life in 1980's New Jersey and her unfortunate fascination with Justin Chambers' Swayze-eyed Rick. She takes more than her fair share of comfort from her loyal to a fault best friend Beth and her mother Virginia, who may be finding love of her own with sweet old Nick Piccolo. Take a drink every time we say "Amber Autumn"--maybe if you're lucky, it'll be poured by hottie bartender Bobby...
