Sign up to my newsletter at www.strongerdads.co.nz This week I am joined by Dr Matthew Barnes, an expert on the impacts of alcohol on recovery and performance, to discuss exactly that! We've spoken to Matt back in Episode 39, and learned a bit about his story. So if you haven't already listened to that, feel free to jump back there and check it out. In this episode, we talk through Matt's studies related to how alcohol impacts recovery from exercise. This was the topic he completed his PhD in and something he has also written more about since (review article linked below). We had hoped to chat about recovery modalities in general, but we will get to that next time. You can find his mentioned review article here - Alcohol: Impact on Sports Performance and Recovery in Male Athletes. It was great to catch up with Matt again, apologies if the audio is a little lower quality at times! You're welcome to donate to the podcast if you want to ensure better-quality audio... haha. Meet Matthew Barnes. He's a mechanical engineer who knows DTC subscriptions inside-out. Brands like Jot, Earth Breeze, and Fat Snax hire him to scale & optimize their business. His key insight? Focus on lifetime revenue, not just new subscribers. Why? Think of a bathtub. New customers are water flowing in. Churn is the drain. To fill the tub, you need more flow in vs out. Eventually, churn caps growth. So get new customers while minimizing churn. In this episode, Matthew reveals marketing strategies that thrive. And why others flop. Join host Ben Fisher to explore customer behavior, optimizing revenue, and subscription fatigue risks. Matthew's insights will shake up your thinking. And show how to spark growth.
This week I am joined by Dr Matthew Barnes. Matt is a husband and father of two teenagers. He is an Associate Professor at Massey University in Palmerston North and was one of my PhD supervisors.I have Matt to thank for getting me into Powerlifting. When I was studying at Massey he noticed I was relatively strong and encouraged me to give it a try. To be fair his enthusiasm for research and our many yarns about strength training during my studies probably also helped move me into that field too!In this episode we discuss Matt's childhood, growing up in a small town in the deep South of New Zealand. We talk about his days working in pubs, playing rugby, and how influential people impacted the direction he took in both his training and life. We also hear how getting hit by a rogue golf ball put an end to his rugby-playing days. The episode finishes with us chatting about some of his philosophies around parenting and how he encourages his kids to be active but doesn't force them into specific sports. It was great to get to chat with Matt and learn his story! We'll definitely be getting Matt back on to discuss some more of his academic research, I'm keen to dig into some of his insights into recovery from exercise. Expect to hear him on the podcast again in the future.Enjoy the episode. _____________________You can find more from Hayden at the following:Instagram - @hjp_strongerdadsCoaching - www.hjpmethod.co.nz/coaching/Research - https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Hayden-PritchardWebsite - www.hjpmethod.co.nz_____________________How can you support my work? You can 'Buy Me a Coffee' by clicking herePurchase a MASS Research Review subscription using this affiliate linkPurchase Eric Helms' Muscle & Strength Pyramid books using this affiliate link

That is maybe 10 minutes from now. Drop it on the floor and forget it, and just focus on the problem at hand until it becomes very easy.” 07:06 “I think the application here is you know, breaking down, a problem or a trajectory into its component parts and then figuring out what are the things I have to work. What are the assumptions that I am making? And then your daily goal or the things that you commit yourself to are as simple as, well, is this moving me closer towards the thing that this is like, or is it moving me further away?” 15:45 “With the way that I kind of structure the business and the times that work is happening or a meeting is happening, I have to run a more efficient business to make it fit within the constraints that I have given it. Because otherwise, you will just expand the work time to fill the available time.” 16:39 “You better believe that when the forcing function is I sleep less. I'm gonna figure that out really darn quick, right? Because I'm putting pain back on myself and shouldering in a way that, that, that forces me to recalibrate.” ABOUT THE BLUEPRINT PODCAST: The BluePrint Podcast is for busy professionals and Household CEOs who care deeply about their families, career, and health. David-Matthew fell in love with writing at the early age of 7, when his second-grade teacher recognized his storytelling talents after he wrote a Halloween-themed story titled The Blue Witch. Thanks to his sixth-grade drama teacher, who saw playwriting potential in him, Barnes' first play was produced when he was only 11. The script was a tribute to soap operas titled Life Isn't Easy. This book is a translation and interpretation of an esoteric teaching, said to have originated with Hermes Trismegistus who is thought to have transformed himself into an ancient Egyptian god with this knowledge. The name “Trismegistus” means “thrice great,” so Hermes wasn’t just awesome, he was awesome cubed. This Kabalion is part of a trilogy of works known as the “Hermetic Writings” and the only one of the three that was not written down in the earlier times, but rather passed down in secrecy to Initiates “when the student was ready.” In 1912 the Kybalion was first published by three anonymous Initiates, so that caused some controversy. Are you seeing the power of a triune playing into things here…Mr. Thrice Great, a trilogy of work and three anonymous Initiates…Holy trinity Batman! So what does the Kabalion contain? The secrets it reveals are seven laws of the Universe. These laws are not so much commandments as they are information about how the Universe functions. How things work, and if you become conscious of this knowledge, you can then choose to flow more harmoniously with the Devine Source of Intelligence that is not only behind it all but is IT. Barnes uses capital I, capital T, like say, a corporate IT infrastructure. But IT is also Source or God.Barnes intent with his book was to translate an obscure and challenging text into something that the modern, everyday person could read and understand. He is very successful with that, in my opinion. In fact, the temptation might be to quickly consume the book in one or two sittings. But what I love about The Kybalion 101, Barnes version, is that it is eloquently written, lyrical, like poetry...

Not only has Matt challenged himself with backflips and running jumps, but he’s also built LAEF (Local Agriculture Expansion Foundation) with his wife to connect small farms with local consumers and cut down on their costs for marketing and payment processing. How do you know when to take risks? Matt says it’s all about dancing on the edge of your mental limits while staying well within your physical ones. Listen to this episode to learn more! This episode is about a clever way one entrepreneur connects people directly with their local food economies to save money, get more nutritious food, and support small family farmers. (2 of 2) Imagine you were going about your business one day when suddenly you hear a voice calling your name. Somehow you know in your heart that it’s God calling. What would you say in response? A Biblical answer would be “Here I Am” which is exactly the response given by several men in the scriptures. It shouldn’t and Exodus 3:1-4:17 will show us that when Moses was first called into God’s service, he wasn’t that different from us today. *Episode 125 focuses on excuse #1 *Episode 126 focuses on excuses #2-4

Matthew Barnes graduated with Part-time Data Analytics Cohort 2. As an artist and illustrator I am fascinated by the ways we visually communicate. Whether it's the layout of a restaurant menu, or a Rembrandt painting, I love inspecting each element and connecting with the story behind the work. I am excited to connect with the story behind the data.
There was a lot of (mis)information swirling around Washington, D.C. long before I started playing “tag, you’re it” with my guest Matthew Barnes at 4th of July parties when Jimmy Carter was in charge, and just before the first agent orange class action lawsuits were filed. (Uncle Dick missed a few parties in the 1980s - probably too busy working.) Speaking of the President, since the White House cancelled today’s coronavirus briefing, I thought it’d be “worth the time and effort” to get caught up with Matt and hear about what he’s been up to at the State Department.Matt is the founding partner of ASG Advisors which provides strategic counsel to companies, corporate executives, foundations, and public officials on maximizing their impact through philanthropy and thought leadership. ASG supports its “clients with sound research, intimate knowledge of best practices, thorough planning, and strong execution.”In July, Matt was called to serve a special assignment with the U.S. State Department as part of PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief). He describes his work related to the AIDS pandemic and how he believes Dr. Deborah Birx’s experiences there can help us here. We talked about world supply chains and using “analytics” to maximize outomes, not just outputs. Keep up the great work Cuz! Proud of you!!

Watch the episode: Listen to the podcast: Matthew Barnes Partner & Chief Solutions Officer at SeeSaw Labs | Owner of Momenta Media | From side hustle to digital production agency and partnering We’re here with Matthew Barnes. He’s the owner of SeeSaw Labs (https://www.seesawlabs.com/) . We’re incredibly fortunate to have Matthew Barnes. Matthew, welcome. Thank you. Matthew, tell us a little bit about how you got started and your business. My background is in engineering. I am formally educated as a civil engineer. Part way through that, I realized that what I love is problem-solving, not necessarily civil engineering. I got started in the startup entrepreneurship world pretty early on in college, realizing that was going to be my out. I liked diving into things that were complicated that I didn’t know a lot about. Getting up to speed and trying to work in that realm and technology is very attractive because the barrier to entry is so low. You need a computer and internet to start getting your hands dirty. While I was at the university, I was doing seismic design, earthquake engineering, while moonlighting running an apparel company, so getting my feet wet in eCommerce. I eventually went on to drop out of grad school to run that eCommerce company for that startup and built from the ground up their whole platform as far as marketing and advertising and then the eCommerce website, the whole nine yards. I also did apparel design and did that for about three and a half years, and then went onto a company called Moosejaw Mountaineering (https://www.facebook.com/moosejaw/) , which if you’re in the outdoor space, you may know. It’s a little bit like Ariad, all the analytics and split testing there, so diving into that marketing aspect and understanding how users interact and behave with a piece of technology. I find that thing is one of the most interesting problems for me because it goes beyond just the basic problem solving. Now you’re getting someone to do something that you anticipate you want them to do. Closing the feedback loop on that and testing hypothesis is a very exciting thing. All the while, Momenta Media, was the side hustle thing along the way. I couldn’t get enough with just the one thing I was doing. I wanted to also find other people who were having problems and say, “I can help you too.” A lot of times that started with just personal connections and then moved on to getting connected with other people that had eCommerce businesses where I thought I could lend a hand and reshape things, building websites, just teaching myself all of that. Now I’m at SeeSaw Labs. SeeSaw Labs is a digital production agency, which is just a vague enough term that can encompass almost anything but specific enough that you get a little idea. The short version is if it’s on a screen, we probably create it. What I try not to say is we don’t build apps. We don’t build websites. That’s a discrete way of looking about technology. Quite frankly, you can get just about anybody to build something like that. People do it all the time, ship a website out to India or whatever and get something built. Anybody who’s done that probably knows that that’s not always the most effective way to get the job done. Where we focus is we are...

Matthew Barnes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Natural Resources Management. Dr. Barnes dives into a demonstration of how much air traffic there is around the world and that we need to be aware that it allows plants, animals, and disease vectors to move around the globe to become invasive. Invasive species have important environmental and economic impact. His research focuses on predicting biological invasions by using genetic tools and environmental DNA. Organisms shed genetic material and his team collects environmental DNA by taking soil, water, and air samples. Dr. Barnes concludes by going through the framework of the ecology of eDNA which is: origin, state, transport, and fate.
Three expert panelists, Matthew Barnes, Samantha Kahl, and Steve Presley, all discuss their research on invasive species and its relevance to climate science. Watch as they answer questions from the audience about invasive species and climate. This seminar was sponsored by the TTU Department of Environmental Toxicology.

Matthew Barnes, partner at ASG Advisors, is a social entrepreneur who spends his time helping other entrepreneurs and business leaders add purpose to their profits. ASG Advisors is a consulting firm that helps companies implement effective corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. We’ll be talking to Matthew live so you can learn much more, but in advance of our live interview he provided four themes that guide his work and that will be the subject of our discussion. Theme 1: Intentionality – corporate community engagement efforts have moved away from the passive, transactional nature of the past to a fuller engagement with community actors to partner on things that can have a real impact. Deeper thought and research inform this approach. Theme 2: Ownership – this theme is related to the the first. It used to be the case that corporate foundations responded either favorably or disfavorably. They had minimal stake or “ownership” of any outcomes from the work. Nowadays, more and more corporations are working hand-in-hand with NGOs and other partners to develop solutions that are informed by research and best practice. In this way, both have a stake in the outcome. Read the full Your Mark on the World article and watch the interview here: http://bit.ly/1M12l9f.
