So, strap on your capes—or, in this case, football pads—and join us as we unravel the heroics, hilarity, and perhaps a few questionable plays in the fascinating saga of NFL Superpro. It's a sports-meets-superhero spectacle you won't want to miss!
This week, everything's gone topsy-turvy! DCEU actors in the MCU! Mass hysteria! But with so many Marvel characters to be cast, and so many taken already, eventually every franchise actor will get The Call from Kevin Feige. The question is,… Continue Reading → The post 357: And John Cena as NFL SuperPro appeared first on Zero Issues Comic Podcast.

This week, Ryan and Justin trade in their inhalers and pocket protectors for free weights and jockstraps as they cover Marvel’s football-themed superhero, NFL SuperPro! Witness the amazing origin of gridiron-star-turned-superpowered-vigilante Phil Grayson as he “tackles” (better get used to football puns!) hard-hitting issues such as steroid abuse and not-quite-classic villains including Instant Replay, Quick Kick, and Sanction. Was this ignored and/or despised series a secret touchdown, or a real fumble (ha ha, sports!)? Also discussed: more tortured football metaphors, a time-traveling ninja assassin who seems out of SuperPro’s league, a half-assed team-up appearance from Spider-Man, irresponsible medication disposal, and why SuperPro’s cameraman/hacker sidekick is the real hero of the book. Plus: We take a look at '90s comic book advertisements, including an X-Men phone game(?) and trading cards based on the TGIF lineup. Discussed: NFL Superpro Special Edition #1 (1991), NFL Superpro #1-4 (1991-1992).

NFL SuperPro For a hero to fail, a lot of things has to happen. It has to be poorly thought out, ill conceived, and have little in terms of redeeming quality. Oh, and it should be created with ulterior motives. Sounds pretty harsh? Then you just haven't met NFL SuperPro.

We're taking a break from all the excitement that is NFL SuperPro for a quick stop in the land of Marvel Zombies. Daniel Brown and Norm de Plume have decided to give a look at Robert Kirkman/Mark Millar's book about the origin story that launched 1000 alternate art covers (seriously, there are a lot of them). The group ends up on going on a few tangents about character power levels, but we assure you that Comics Talk Comics will never stoop to the level of comparing DBZ Gotenks vs. Superboy Prime because we know Prime would win it under a minute. Also, Daniel's fanboyism for both Iceman and Powerade products are finally revealed. It isn't pretty. Reddit/CBR - comicstalkcomics Email - comicstalkcomics@gmail.com Twitter - comstalkcomics
NFL SuperPro continues to impress the group. We enjoyed the second issue so much that we managed to stay on topic and not run off into too many strange tangents. Though, truth be told, Daniel Brown has to get an argument in that Scar, of Lion King fame, was Disney's first gay villain. "Dude likes dude lions." He's joined by Norm de Plume and Matt Moseley in another outing. This also marks the first time that all members of the podcast reveal on of the most intimiate details any man could: Their favorite sauce to put on food. We're only 2 episodes from ending our favorite bad comic book ever, so if you're joining us for the first time then kick up, live, laugh, love, and (most importantly) drink! Welcome back to another issue of NFL SuperPro, folks! Comics Talk Comics is about to go into swag overload because the next 3 issues will be about the final days of NFL SuperPro. After three long podcasts about The Death of Superman it is a refreshing change to see bad comic books done right. We ask the hard questions so you don't have to: Why doesn't Phil Greyfield (AKA SuperPro) play in the NFL? Why would you make a trench coat out of pure silk? Is Marco Sanzionare the greatest 616 villain of all time? What is the appropriate amount of money to put on a Dave and Busters card when visiting a city? For those who have no interest in listening to the podcast, but enjoy reading descriptions: He's a mutant, they are idiots, yes, and about $20 (if you plan on hanging for an hour or so). Reddit/CBR - comicstalkcomics Twitter - comstalkcomics Email - comicstalkcomics@gmail.com
On the front cover of NFL SuperPro #6 the following phrase is proudly displayed: "COMICDOM'S FAVORITE FOOTBALL HERO." We at Comics Talk Comics couldn't agree more. Despite the numerous amount of football-related heroes out there we find ourselves time and time again putting SuperPro above the rest. This week Daniel Brown, Norm de Plume, and Special Guest Matt Moseley discuss Phil Grayfield's attempt at race relations using "John Wayne's School of Anthropology" (the comic books words, not ours). Oh, and the continuing theme of "people who wear suits and smoke are villains" manages to be fulfilled in both issues by two completely different people. So if you run a business, wear a suit, and smoke cigars then feel free to stop trying to close down the local kid's recreational center for a few hours and join us as comics talk comics.
"Better scoot out on my thigh jets." Let's do a thought exercise: Stare at a blank sheet of paper and then read that opening line out loud to yourself. Now do it again. And Again. Continue doing this for 20-30 seconds; if you performed this correctly then you'll notice you're losing your mind. And we did too. Daniel Brown, Norm de Plume, and Special Guest Matt Moseley set out to answer a lot of the hard questions. No joke: We normally do two issues in one podcast, but NFL Super Pro #5 was so dense with absurdity that we ended up doing just one issue. However, mid-podcast we decide that the dialogue was too good not to do the entire issue as a radio play. If you like football puns then you should probably not be permitted to operate a motor vehicle, but don't let our judgement stop you from enjoying this very special episode of Comics Talk Comics.
We know what you're thinking: "What if Tim Tebow became Robocop?" Well, Fabien Nicieza thought the same thing in 1991, which basically makes him the Nostradamus of comic books. Daniel Brown, Norm de Plume, and Special Guest Matt Moseley explore the implications of a landscape where there are sentient NFL robots, the technology used to put a stadium inside a penthouse, and why Philly fans may be the greatest antagonists in comic book history. Feel free to follow us on our twitter at comstalkcomics. I'm pretty sure whatever twitter information Daniel gives at the end of the episode is just a BUNCH OF LIES! Also, "wrong twitter tag" might become a running theme for the next 2-3 episodes.
Have you ever read a comic book where a NCAA linebacker gets injured, gets super powers and ends up fighting a NCAA safety that didn't make it to the NFL, became a ninja, and then went on a killing spree?Because we did for you. Norm and Daniel try to get to the bottom of a complicated question: Is the SuperPro series good or awesome?
This podcast uses the term "Robocop Tim Tebow" several times. You know you want to know why. Join us as we discover the (616) world of NFL Super Pro. His strength in his fight against chemicals? Chemicals. His weakness? Leg injuries. At some point in the podcast we figure out what's needed to make The Hulk serum. One of the ingredients is "game day tape." You know you want to know why. Fabien Nicieza, creator of Deadpool (and many more fantastic comics), wrote this comic book just so he could have season tickets to NFL games. It's incredible. YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY.
This week, Chris and Matt are giving in and interviewing each other about their new comics, Down Set Fight and Copernicus Jones: Robot Detective! We talk about how Copernicus Jones started as a parody and turned into something else entirely, how Dog City and Who Framed Roger Rabbit were our introduction to noir, Down Set Fight’s early life as an NFL Superpro pitch, and how cartoony flashbacks actually make a family story work a little better. Plus, more entries in our ever-expanding catalog of Every Story Ever!
Friend of the podcast Brandon Fried joins us again this week as we discuss horror comics, Batfleck, flea market comic vendors, Ryan's love of sports, NFL SuperPro, sports comics, not playing Arkham Origin, webcomics, Green Lantern reading order, Iron Man: Secret Origin, surprise Arrow villain, Captain America: Winter Soldier trailer, Toby's Comic Conspiracy Book of the Month pick Jim Henson's Tale of Sand, and some random picks of the week. Starring Ryan Higgins, Brandon Fried, Bryce Larsen, Brock Sager, Toby Sidler, and Charlie West.
