Storm Bert wreaks havoc across the railway with heavy flooding and high winds causing major disruption for trains. Richard visits Northampton station, which experienced major flooding when the River Nene burst its banks. Here's just a snapshot of some of the problems: Great Western Railway was running very limited services at the start of the week and advising people not to travel. Greater Anglia stopped running from Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport and Cambridge, along with other routes. The River Nene burst its banks at Northampton, causing severe disruption to London Northwestern and Avanti West Coast. Transport for Wales had widespread disruption across their network. Northern Rail services were cancelled on some routes because of heavy flooding. West Midlands Railway ran fewer trains. And ScotRail had to put some travel restrictions in place too. A new Network Rail and South Western Railway initiative is tackling leaf fall and wheel slip on the network. Plus… the Young Railway Photographer of the Year competition opens for entries. Even More Rubbish

This week's episode is about even more rubbish. Patron Shane suggested we look at electronic rubbish and there's certainly a story to tell there. We'll also look at plastic waste, and I warn you none of it is good news. Talking of rubbish, I started writing this on one of Northern Rail's Pacer trains stranded for over an hour in deepest Yorkshire by cows on the line. Not seen in the south of England for many years, these were built very cheaply in the 80s out of bus parts. They are now 20 years beyond their design life and due to be withdrawn later in 2019. Of course there's no wifi and no socket to plug the charger into; not even a table to balance the laptop on. I'm a staunch believer in reduce, reuse, recycle, but surely there are limits. Having said that, I hear that once the trains have been withdrawn the government plans to offer them to local communities for use as village halls or community centres. I'm surprised they didn't suggest food banks or shelters for the homeless. And yes this giveaway idea is absolutely true - there's a link on the blog.  Preparation and delivery of this week's corporate presentations took a lot of time, so that and a 2.5 hour train delay have made this week's episode late, so apologies for that.  If you need a speaker for your event have at look at me in action. (I don't always wear that tie.) https://youtu.be/uMBMiVgl3ec

You wouldn’t necessarily know it reading the news from London, but the north of England’s railway network is in a bit of a mess. Delayed electrification work, a new timetable, mass cancellations, the whole shebang. To explain how bad things are, and how they got that way, I’m joined by Jen Williams, political and social affairs editor for the Manchester Evening News. She tells me why nobody seems sure who’s to blame for this mess, and whether there’s any realistic chance of anyone tidying it up any time soon. All that, and we talk about Andy Burnham, too.Skylines is the podcast from the New Statesman’s cities site, CityMetric. It’s hosted by Jonn Elledge.Skylines is supported by 100Resilient Cities.
