Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - A Cortes Island based solar company has been installing more systems that tie into the grid. There is a lot of potential for solar energy production in British Columbia. It has been largely untouched because of the province's reliance on hydro-power and natural gas. As of October 2023, BC Hydro had 8,500 net metering customers with a combined solar capacity of 71 MW. This was only a fraction of the 4,609.5 MW of solar capacity tied to Canada's grid that year. These statistics do not include off-grid installations. “The majority of my customers are off-grid. Anytime you're using fuel, switching to solar is a 'no brainer.' The payback is extremely quick. You don't have the noise of the generator and it generator is not very efficient either,” explained Ian King of Cortes Island based King Solar Contracting. He cited a recent $60,000 installation on Twin Islands. Prior to this, his customer had been burning through $40,000 worth of diesel every year. The system should pay for itself, through reduced energy costs, in a year and a half. King: “The bulk of my customers are on Hernando Island. I've put in about 95 of the systems out there. There's quite a few installers on Savary Island, but I've done a few out that way. I had quite a few up in Granite Bay before BC Hydro reached the north end of Quadra. Refuge is another little cove of no power. There's the two fingers around the Gorge, and that's generally where there's no hydro.” He proceeded to list some small islands around Cortes: Channel Rock. Whale Rock, Heather Islet and Coulter Island. King has put in more than 200 systems during the past 20 years. While the majority appear to be in our vicinity, he has worked on some of the remote islands around Port McNeill, and as far south as Mill Bay, or across the waters to the Lund - Powell River area. Cortes Currents was especially interested in some of the grid tied systems King Solar recently installed on Cortes Island. The ‘pay back' is slower, often about 20 years, but this really depends on the complexity of the system required. Sadhu Johnston and Manda Aufochs Gillespie had two solar systems installed on their property a couple of years ago. They have a complex system with battery storage for their house, and a more simple system for their shop and a rental unit on their property. Johnston: “Our system up the hill doesn't have the separate inverter and battery system, so that system was a lot less expensive to install. We don't get the benefit of power during an outage and whatnot, but we still get the benefit of reducing our consumption because we're generating power and putting it into the grid. So that system up the hill will have a much faster payback - because it's really just the solar panels.” King: “I like to sit down with each individual customer and keep an eye on their bills, to better educate myself on exactly what the real time numbers areper each system.” Johnston: “It's really great to have somebody in our community that knows my panel system and can come and give me technical advice and help me out versus hiring someone from afar that comes in and does your installation, disappears and it's really hard to reach them.” “I call him once every few months with a question. Wondering what this light means, or can you come over and look at something or there's a noise or whatever. It makes a really big difference to be able to know that if I need him within an hour, he's over taking a look at something and he's not sending me a bill every time. He's a neighbour and he feels pride in his work. He wants to make sure that I understand things and can maintain it properly ourselves.” King: “It's a big selling feature for me, even on Hernando per se, that I am local. Word of mouth is an enormous part of how my business expands and I get new jobs.”

Bloomberg Tech reporter Ian King says the move comes after the US government tightened restrictions on what the company can market there. Really what matters is what happens in the AI accelerator market, and Video said it's going to have new tips for that business for China to meet these new rules. We don't know when that's coming, orisindeed if that will actually come, and that will have a much more concrete impact on revenue and bloombergsing and King says, this version of Nvidia's chip for China's market has about ten percent fewer processing cores than what it sells in other countries and elon Musk acts formally, Twitter lost its effor in court to block at California loss seeking to control toxic posts. The Biden administration is warning Texas about its new immigration law to deal with illegal migration, Bloomberg's Nancy Lyons reports in a letter. The Justice Department reportedly says it will file a lawsuit against Texas if it implements the law that would empower state and local law enforcement officials to arrest, jail, and prosecute migrants suspected of entering the US ilegally. CBS News reports the DOJ says the law would basically criminalize actions that are already illegal at the federal level, and would undermine relations with Mexico and prevent officials from enforcing federal immigration laws. This is Bloomberg Daybreak and good morning. I'm John Tuckery. You did hear. Among our top stories mains Secretary of State rule that Donald Trump cannot run in the state's Republican primaries, citing his efforts to overturn the twenty twenty election results. Let's take a deeper dive into the story this morning. We're joined now by Terry Haynes of Pangea Policy. Always a pleasure to speak to you, Terry. Certainly it's not going to be the last word, and it sets up for what one observer calls an epic constitutional showdown. What is your view? My view, firstly is discount anytime anybody says things like epic. But secondly, John, I think what you have to understand is what listeners have to understand is a little bit of perspective here Colorado. This Colorado Supreme Court, by a four to three decision, made its determination, but its Secretary of State has already said that Trump's going to be on the primary ballot, you know, abbs in some sort of additional action. So if that doesn't confuse things enough. Secondly, what you've got from the main Secretary of State yesterday is kind of an executative version of what the Colorado Supreme Court said, deciding on our own that trum Trump was an insurrectionist, but also understanding that the thing is going to be appealed. Net I wouldn't look for any of these things to stick. The Supreme Court of the United States is almost certainly not going to allow states to decide how to interpret the fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution, or alone denied candidate to federal rights under the Fifth Amendment. So, you know, generally speaking, I think these things are overblown. And the last thing I will say is there's a lot of state and federal courts that have decided in ways opposite of the Colorado and main courts. People need to remember that too. Donald Trump initially ran as a disruptor, and now he seems to be running as a victim. Does this all embolden him or does it give rise to some something along the lines of Trump fatigue. You know, that's a very good question, and I think the answer probably is some of both. The conventional wisdom right now is that this emboldens and empowers him with the electorate. You can certainly see how that might be so instinctively. But at the same time, it also I think adds to the appeal of not Trump Republican candidates who say, look, if you like the conservative policies and have them during Trump's administration, we can have those back, and we can have them without the circus. We're going to find out which of those is true, or potentially whether both of them are true, starting in about three weeks in Iowa, and so you know, we will see. But the attains me not to make a call on that, but I mean, truly we will see. I'm not going to be the expert on the feelings of the Iowa electorate, but the bottom line is is that I underperformed in the Iowa caucuses is going to give rise to a narrative that Trump, it might not be as strong, and the challengers are getting stronger, and that will reinvigorate the race at it to some extent. All right, speaking of challengers, Nikki Haley also making news with what she says or doesn't say, are the causes of the Civil War, namely slavery. How does that play out in the election cycle. I think that's a blip, honestly, John. It's used by and I'm not meaning to to minimize, No, I mean to minimize what she said or how she said it. But I think it's a blip. You know, she did what she needed to do, which was she was trying to make a trying to use a kind of states rights versus federal point about the war to make a case about the tensions that exist today. It was ham fisted, and she took it back, she clarified, and I think that that goes away pretty quickly. Honestly, this is kind of out of left field. Is Joe Biden going to stick with Vice President Kamala Harris as his running mate? Oh? I think so. Yeah. The Biden sees Harris whole including faults, but he would have a devil of a time taking taking her off the ticket at this point, and for that reason alone, I think he won't give us your view of how the election is all playing out. I will refer listeners right back to a very interesting Bloomberg story on the terminal about a Quinnipiac poll that was released on Wednesday that shows Biden and Trump basically the dead heat and the popular poll, but if you add Bob Kennedy to it, it becomes a thirty eight Biden thirty six Trump Kennedy twenty two race. And I point that out only to say that I've been saying for some time that third parties are going to be more invigorated and more important to this presidential race. Today, on the podcast, there is a massive announcement. This morning, I launched a book publishing company called Washed Up Books. After two volumes of Anthology of Emo, I really felt there was more to do in this space and because of your support, it's time to make this a real thing. Today, I'm proud to announce Red Letter Days, the debut novel from Matt Pryor from the Get Up Kids, New Amsterdams, and Terrible Twos. Today, it's available for preorder via WashedUpBooks.com or via our friends at PolyvinylRecords.com. And yes, it is available worldwide. Wherever you are in the world, you can get this! I thought it would be fun to recap the releases of Anthology of Emo and how we got to doing Red Letter Days with the designer Jesse Reed. Jesse's day job is Order, a design firm, Standards Manual book series, and in a fantastic band called Sharkswimmer, where he's the drummer. It'll make sense as you hear the episode. Jesse was invaluable to making these a reality, and we go into the story of how we started doing books and dive into books and music. This is overwhelming to have happened. It's amazing to think someone like Matt Pryor, whom I idolized, has put pen to paper and written a fantastic series of stories that I have been waiting to tell you for so long. Truly, thank you for the support on this podcast and the books. Shout out to everyone who helped make the Anthologies happen, Polyvinyl Records, Ian King, and many others… This is just the start of Washed Up Books. Learn more about your ad choices. Since the government's tax-cutting mini-budget last week, the pound has hit record lows against the dollar, mortgage providers have pulled hundreds of products and there has been damning criticism from the International Monetary Fund and an emergency intervention by the Bank of England. Critics have accused Liz Truss, the prime minister, and Kwasi Kwarteng, the chancellor, of being “economically illiterate”. On the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson looks at the economic arguments and the market reaction. He's joined by Sky News business presenter Ian King, Martin Weale, a former member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, and Jane Foley, a senior strategist at Rabobank. Sam White – one of the UK's leading female entrepreneurs who started a company at the age of 24 from her sister's conservatory, building it up to a £20m+ turnover business and 170 staff. Now 46, Sam is the founder of Freedom Services Group – an ever-expanding insurance business in the UK and Australia and umbrella brand for a number of different insurance businesses Sam owns. Sam was recently featured on the FT, The New Statesman, Manchester Evening News, My London with another story to come out in Times soon. She would make a great radio guest as she hosts her own podcast “Human Business with Sam White” and has also regularly been on BBC's Wake Up To Money and Sky Business Live with Ian King to discuss the business affairs of the day. She started her first company in 1999, just a year after her mother who battled with alcohol addiction tragically died of an overdose. By 2010 the company was doing so well that Sam decided to move to Beverly Hills and rented a house just a few doors down from the likes of Charlie Sheen, Tom Jones, Paris Hilton and Robbie Williams – who sang at her wedding to her former partner. Sam, who is extremely straight talking and down to earth, says: “I sometimes describe those years as my arsehole years [laughs]. The business was going great and I felt like doing something different so I rented a 9000 square foot house on Mulholland Estates and bought myself a Porsche 911 turbo convertible. I'm a Stockport girl and I did genuinely think ‘girl you've f**king made it!'” Sadly, the dream ended abruptly when in 2012 a change to regulation meant she lost 60% of her business in four weeks. Sam decided to come back to the UK and rebuild the business… which hit £23m turnover before Covid. In addition to being a hugely successful entrepreneur, Sam is a mum of two and is soon to be married to Jennie, her partner. She cares passionately about diversity and inclusion – which is at the heart of her business and believes much more needs to be done to champion female founders as well as female leaders within her industry. In this episode, Adam Stott talks with Sam White about how she built a huge business in the insurance industry. Sam tells us how her independent nature fueled the fire of entrepreneurship at a young age. Listen to this episode and certainly you will learn more!

Steve’s POV Japan-America: Cars, Culture, Cuisine and Comedy
In today's episode our podcast goes international!! We head to the Philippines to interview a very good friend of mine and international car enthusiast Angie Mead King. I met Angie on the Goldrush rally several years ago. Angie King (formally Ian King) is a transgender car lover!! She loves supercars, muscle cars and JDM too!! She owns car restoration shops in the Philippines and is a philanthropist, who is married to an international Supermodel and TV personality named Joey Mead King. Their story and their relationship together, particularly surrounding the behind the scenes details of some of the cars they currently own is incredible; particularly the story surrounding the Eleanor Mustang that saved their relationship! Not many people, besides myself could tell you this incredible story. Angie and Joey love America and Japan culture and today's episode will leave you inspired and energized too; especially as we end the talk today with me gobbling down some Japanese fermented soybeans called Nitto for breakfast!! Check out: Angie Mead King- @AngieMeadKIng Please subscribe to Steve's POV Youtube channel (approaching 500,000 subs) and instagram and twitter facebook as well- @StevesPOVKim Wong- @kimwong_77

We wrestle with this genre's cringe name, quote Simon Reynolds ad nauseam, ponder why post-rock bands prefer to play live while sitting on chairs, and run through a based post-rock playlist curated by Ian.
