This week, on the first of the 'Final Five' episodes in our second lap around England's 39 historic counties, we're digging into the sacred ritual landscape of Wiltshire, and getting weird! We start off discussing St Pancras Day, including Pancras' martyrdom in 4th century Rome when he was a mere teenager, before his bones went on tour with St Augustine, all before we wander to Wiltshire in England's South West.On the history front, we discuss the astounding history of the ancient capital of Old Sarum, the moving of Salisbury Cathedral during the 13th century, two key Arthurian legends connected to the county, and more - all before Martin eschews some delicious-sounding Wiltshire delicacies before settling on a waistline-expanding option for this week's County Dish.Next, like many an antiquarian of yesteryear, we start digging into the county's folklore, chatting through the bonkers history of The Odstock Curse, Wiltshire's staggering depth of UFO/UAP phenomenon, a rather grim ghost story pertaining to Longleat house and estate, and so much more - all enhanced by some excerpts from Saturday's upcoming Local Legends interview with Emma Heard, the amazing human being behind Weird Wiltshire. Then it's on to the main event: Martin's telling of "The Old Creature" - a story which connects the 1906 excavation of Manton Round Barrow to missing fingers, sinister hauntings, and a wider array of unexplained, possibly cosmic paranormal phenomenon that continue to plague the county even now...We really hope you enjoy the episode, and will be back on Thursday with a new Magic and Medicine bonus episode about Alchemy, and our Patreon Exclusive episode for May 2025 about the history of Morris Dancing, all before the full interview with Emma comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. But I'm not going to spoil it by spilling the beans! You'll just have to listen to the episode! Duncan is a Morris Dancer (so super duper cool) and a sober warrior coach! You can find him at his Insta @soberwarriorcoach as well as on his website where you will learn that he is an author, a speaker and a serious badass! He counsels others to lead cleaner, less toxic lives (on many levels) and speaks on this podcast about his struggle giving up alcohol, but also how that has made all the difference! He is a funny guy, as you will hear, and I just enjoyed our conversation which covered, among many things, E.T., James Bond, Morris Dancing, Oxford and the alarming murder rate as well as the Terminator! We were all over the place but did not neglect the magical story Duncan had to tell! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR RATINGS & REVIEWS. BUT I WANT MORE! (THERE, I SAID IT!!!) Fandom and The Archers audio book Chapter 4, Helen Burrows

Academic Archers

Cult and Culture: Transformative Fandom-de dum de dum de dumHelen BurrowsThe Archers fits a definition of ‘cult media' in that it draws a niche audience, has nostalgia appeal and represents a subculture. Like other cult media, it has multiple active communities of people who identify as fans. However, it is also part of wider British culture, recognisable to and even referenced by many who would not count themselves as fans. In other fan groups, a myriad of artefacts, fanfiction and cosplay (character costumes) can be seen online and at conventions (think Harry Potter or Dr Who). With an audio-drama such as The Archers, everyone's mental images are different so while physical fan artefacts exist, they are relatively few, and though there is much fan-writing, limited actual fanfiction appears to exist. Yet the creativity that can be seen around The Archers is huge. This chapter looks at Archers-related behaviour and creativity, through the lens of ‘transformative fandom', which effectively works with source material to reflect the fans' desires and interests. The second part of the chapter explores some broader effects of transformative fandom, considering informal education as a transformative processExperienced as a senior lecturer in social work, Helen M Burrows worked in the East Midlands both as an independent practice educator and as an Outreach domestic abuse support worker until retirement in 2018. Her professional practice background is in Child Protection and working with adults with complex needs. Helen's research interests have included social work education, gender and sexuality in social care, digital engagement, and more recently the role of popular and social media in informal and public education. This has led her to look at fandom, and how fan forums can support learning in a variety of disciplines. She is also a keen knitter, and her Ambridge cardigan was chosen by the BBC to be part of the 70 items for 70 years of The Archers collection in 2021. Helen has been listening to The Archers since around 1964, is the same age as Shula, and shares her birthday with Tracy Horrobin. A long-term member of the Archers Anarchists (‘The Archers is real, there is no cast'), she has been involved with Academic Archers since the first conference in 2016 and has presented papers at four of the five conferences to date: on using The Archers in social work education, mapping family dysfunction, Morris Dancing, and transformative fandom. Her chapter in this book is a development of her transformative fandom paper presented at Reading in 2019.

But there are many more elements to "Morris" that the stereotypes we are familiar with. In this episode, I explore its origins, and learn how it has expanded around the globe. Today's guests: Peter Austin, "Bagman" of The Morris Ring - The founding National Association of Morris and Sword Dance Clubs in Britain. Cat Van't Hof & Nat James of the Brandragon Morris in Melbourne, Australia. To learn more about these groups see below: https://themorrisring.org/ In 1934 the Cambridge Morris Men invited five other teams to join them in the formation of a national organisation, the result was that five of the revival clubs - Cambridge, Letchworth, Thaxted, East Surrey and Greensleeves - met at Thaxted in Essex on the 11th May that year to inaugurate The Morris Ring. Cambridge Morris Men describe the start of Morris in Cambridge during the winter of 1911/12 in the 1949 booklet 50 Years of Morris Dancing. Oxford were not at Thaxted, however they sent their apologies and were there in spirit, and agreed with the suggested constitution for the Ring. Helmond Morris(link is external) was the first group to start outside of the UK - in 1935. They even danced during the dark years of World War II! http://brandragon.morris.org.au/ Founded in 2001, we are Melbourne's only North West Morris Side. What is Morris Dancing? It is traditional English folk dancing! The North West style is done in formations of 4, 6 or 8 dancers – to live music. We wear heavy clogs which were worn in the factories of England during the time just after the Industrial Revolution. The dancing steps are quite simple, but the dancers create interesting visual patterns which comes from hours of practise. If you would like to try Morris dancing, please contact us and come along to a practise any time! We also welcome new musicians to join us! Our current band has members who play the melodeon, the recorder, the drum and other percussion instruments. Well, judge for yourselves whether with the addition of some clunky segues we've achieved this!Conversation ranges from Hannah's experiences of being head of music staff and assistant conductor at ETO, to Oli touring with Collabro and residencies at Ronnie Scott's and Blue Note in Milan. Oli also chats about working with Julian Siegel, Pharoah Sanders and Ray Gelato. Plus supporting Bob Dylan, the different Jazz scenes in London and seeking authenticity in your work.Hannah talks about her mentors, some hardcore early conducting lessons, complicated translations and rehearsing orchestras in Chinese. KATE WALTON ELLIOT is a really cool awesome person. You may have seen her on Transport Evolved, or at least you've DEFINITELY seen an episode she's been a part of. She hails from Britain, where Susie Dent will haunt you if you end a sentence in a preposition like we just did. and she made the journey to America about a decade ago. You know Jonny Smith, formerly of the CarPervert of the Fully Charged, and of the Fifth Gear, who changed the name of his show to a really lame name of the LateBrakeShow? Remember his little tiny car that he snagged up the land speed record for? KATE SOLD HIM THAT CAR. Kate ALSO has several of her own fully functioning conversion projects - the Morris is our favorite, because if we close our eyes, we can pretend that it's the only Morris thing in the world, and forget that Morris Dancing ever existed at all. Ah, that ones a knee-slapper. Like they slap their kneeeees in... ohmygod, make it stop. WHEN SHE ISN'T WORKING ON EV'S, SHE's SAVING LIVES IN AS A NURSE. This week on the Drinks Adventures podcast, we foray into cider and some of the ancient traditions associated with the annual apple harvest.William Smith & Sons is one of the oldest family businesses in Tasmania's Huon Valley. Founder Willie Smith planted the first tree in their apple orchard in 1888 and fourth generation family member Andrew Smith is the current orchardist, responsible for taking the farm organic in the late 90s.And in 2012, drinks marketer Sam Reid partnered with Smithy to launch Willie Smith's Cider, putting apples that are not good enough to sell to very good use. They've continued to evolve Willie Smith's over the last few years with the introduction of heritage apple varieties to their orchard. Most of the ciders made in Australia that are actually made from real apples are made using the same varieties of apple you would find in your local supermarket, which is the equivalent of making wine from table grapes. There's been a few cider makers that have pioneered the use of proper cider apples in Australia but arguably it's been Willie Smith's that's brought this evolution of cider to the fore, with its multiple wins of Best In Show at the Australian Cider Awards, most recently in the last few weeks with the single variety Kingston Black Cider.Willie Smith's has also introduced to Australia the ancient ceremony known as 'wassailing' at its Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival held annually in July. It’s time to figure out the opposite of things that don’t have a natural opposite. Paul suggested we do Morris Dancing, which we did. Then Nikki suggested we try Muesli, which we did. Before James asked about the Moon. And yes, we went there. (Plus a bonus one, that’s top secret). So, are we right? Or are we the opposite of right? Lets us know your thoughts, and why not suggest something yourself? If you enjoy the show, please share it with all your friends, because it really does help spread the word. Thank you.

In a week where a conciliatory tone was struck and people from all walks of life came together to celebrate tenets of love and tolerance, the team are back to bring some much needed fear and uncertainty to proceedings. Speaking of which, Paddy McCloskey is never one to shy away from a backwards and unfounded claim about what he describes as foreigners in “his country.” After Gary Linekers typically jingoist twitter commentary on Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’s exit from the FA Cup, Paddy wants to ask if overseas managers do struggle in adapting to the unique requirements of the British leagues. The Sun was not available for comment. For a man to whom even the most complex of challenges comes easily the thought of having to really try in any task sits uneasily for Jon Mackenzie. This desire to merely tread water in life is what draws him to Paul Pogba, but is the punditocracy at large right to point out that Liverpool’s gloriously remunerated reserve side should at least look like they’re busy while slumping to another home defeat, this time against a team comprised of what I’m assured were literal wolves. Ever the voice of positivity and optimism, I’m going to devote my minute on the soapbox to a glowing endorsement of Bastian Schweinsteiger’s conduct. After a difficult year the midfielder put in a great performance on Sunday and should be praised, especially considering the far less upstanding contributions of certain players with far lesser reasons to feel aggrieved at their treatment. It’s important to recognise this display of moral fibre when confronted with so many petulant and exceedingly arrogant characters. Will Geeson makes up the numbers this week and along with Jon and I, he’ll be taking on McCloskey’s newest edition of organised fun. The winner this week will take home a copy of Paddy’s new autobiography: ‘My Life in Morris Dancing, The Patrick McCloskey Story’ All this, and more besides in this week’s episode of A Team of John O’Sheas.

An exciting roller-coaster of an episode as we flit from Portugal to Hartlepool, spending time in the company of garrulous taxi drivers, drunken hens and flirty golfers, discussing all manner of topics such as who decided how we assimilate animal and vehicular sounds in speech, with a bit of locker room banter and some experimental arty ambient music.

On this week's episode of The Web of Queer, we review the 6th story in the new series, The Woman Who Lived, and the Third Doctor story The Daemons. For The Woman Who Lived, we discuss the change in Me’s character, and how she got to where she is now. What similarities and differences do we see between her and the Doctor, and how would a young-appearing woman have to navigate within these time periods? In our The Daemons review, we discuss the Third Doctor's way of interacting with those around him. Does his arrogance get in the way? How does the UNIT team work in this story, even with the Brig’s helicopter in danger? And how does the inclusion of things like witchcraft and Morris Dancing feel in the story? Special Guest: Graydon Radford On this show we talk to Graydon Radford, retired Army nurse, Morris Dancer and the heart & soul behind the mighty @shrewsmorris Twitter account. Since the Autumn of 2012, Graydon and the Shrewsbury Morris side have built a 20,000 strong, highly engaged community on Twitter (as at May 2014). With a focus on the twin passions of Morris dancing and Shrewsbury, they support local businesses, Morris sides all over the country and the beautiful county of Shropshire. We talk to Graydon about his approach to Twitter, how he keeps such a large and diverse community engaged, what the benefits are to the Shrewsbury Morris organisation and pick up some great tips and hints on building an online community. In the interests of full disclosure, we should note that the interviewer this week is Cathy Brown, also a Shrewsbury Morris member. There may be sticks, bells, mandolins and melodeons at any point!
