Craig Callahan, chief executive officer at ICON Advisers, says the stock market is trading near its fair value, but that it has enough earnings momentum to push out an average year of gains — something in the range of 9 to 11 percent — and that it could do better if profits come in above expectation levels. He does anticipate more volatility, but figures the underlying value of stocks — especially those with quality management — should overcome headline risks. Mish Schneider, chief strategist at MarketGauge.com, says that market hysteria about headlines — and particularly some of those being created over the weekends while the stock market is closed — is creating opportunities, especially for volatility traders. Plus, in the Market Call, Matt Stucky, chief portfolio manager of equities for Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management, talks about being picky in selecting stocks that can thrive in current conditions.

This week's Alpha Trader podcast features hosts Aaron Task and Stephen Alpher talking with Brent Schutte, chief investment strategist at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management. Among the topics discussed: While the Fed has begun to taper and may push through a couple of rate hikes next year, Schutte expects the central bank to be very patient about tightening policy. He's in the “transitory” camp on inflation, noting plenty of slack in the labor market as evidenced by a labor force participation rate that remains quite low. Given the above combined with growing corporate earnings and a 10-year yield in the 1.50% area, Schutte continues to see stocks as the place to invest. The “market” may be expensive in some areas, says Schutte, but it depends where you look. The S&P Pure Growth Index trades at 35x next year's earnings, but the S&P Pure Value Index at just 11x. While there's been good reasons for Growth to outperform to this point, Schutte sees a shift towards areas that are cheaper. Noting the Bank of England and the Reserve Bank of Australia both reversed themselves on tightening threats in the last couple of weeks, Schutte isn't seeing any appetite among global central banks to declare war on inflation. Therein lies the risk for the market in future years - that central banks at some point are going to have to really slam on the breaks. That, however, is a question for 2023, or perhaps beyond. Brent Schutte, chief investment strategist for Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management, says that while worries about rising inflation and interest rates have some market observers talking about the potential for recession, he believes they're ahead of the economy right now. Schutte says the economic cycle still has room to roll -- and that the market will pick up as fears of long-term inflation in the coming few quarters. The remainder of the show has a distinct focus on income, and ways to generate and protect it in the inflationary/rising rate environment. Tom Lydon of ETFTrends.com makes a fund that pays monthly income and that has an 8 percent current yield his 'ETF of the Week,' and Renee Schaaf, president of retirement and income solutions for Principal Financial Group, talks about the pros and cons of purchasing annuities under these changing market conditions.
This week's Alpha Trader podcast features hosts Aaron Task and Stephen Alpher talking first with Jim Iuorio, director at TJM Institutional Services, and then with Brent Schutte, chief investment strategist at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management. Among the topics covered: Why Iuorio believes China's crackdown on Bitcoin (and Beijing seems to mean it this time) makes the long-term thesis even more compelling, even as the bulls are likely to experience more pain in the near-term. Last week's modest hawkish surprise from the Fed was probably not that big of a deal, says Iuorio, but it caught a lot of inflation trade longs too far out over their skis. Hence, we saw big reversals in bond prices, gold, commodities, and the dollar, not to mention the banks. It wouldn't surprise Iuorio if Fed Chair Jay Powell - speaking later this week - pushes back against any ideas that he' considering tighter policy anytime soon. “Investment success in this expansion is likely to be the result of ignoring recent history,” says Brent Schutte, as a combination of fiscal and monetary policies will shift concern about deflation and sluggish economic growth to inflation and speedier growth. Schutte also believes that markets are making a bit too much about the FOMC meeting last week. The “dots” may have been shuffled around a bit, but there's been no hint of any imminent policy change. Whether one agrees with it or not, markets are de facto part of the Fed's mandate these days, says Schutte. Ultimately, that's going to have the central bank well behind the curve on inflation, and that's going to be good for stocks - particularly the cyclicals, value names, and small caps. Brent Schutte of Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management says that the market and the economy are not as disjointed and disconnected as they seem at first blush, noting that the pandemic created an 'economic valley' that has mostly been filled by adaptive companies, federal policies, science pursuing vaccines and more. That has created a situation where Schutte believes the market can continue to performa and the economy can grow even with the virus problem unresolved. Also on the show, Tom Lydon makes a brand-new mid-cap focused fund his 'ETF of the Week,' Jim Callinan of Osterweis Emerging Opportunity fund talks about the secular market opportunities he sees happening now, and Susan Dziubinski of Morningstar Inc. discusses how the health-care industry is being reshaped by coronavirus.
Brent Schutte of Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management says that the viral economy is, effectively, a four-step process that we are half-way through, with re-opening the economy and creating a vaccine for coronavirus the next steps. Meanwhile, he notes that upcoming bad economic news is easy to overlook because 'we cause the economic data to be bad,' but it will be watched carefully -- and be important to investors -- as Americans go back to work and the long-lasting impacts of the shutdown are realized. In the Market Call, Mark Yusko of Morgan Creek Asset Management says that 'The world is very delicate right now, and patience will be rewarded for investors,' noting that he is looking tactically at gold, cash, master limited partnerships and more as buying opportunities. Also on the show, JJ Kinahan of TD Ameritrade talks about his firm's Investor Movement Index, which shows that individuals have mostly done the right thing in this slowdown by not throwing away long-held strategies to avoid short-term pain.

Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, said that the domestic economy is far from falling into a recession, but he noted that the manufacturing sector in the U.S. is nearing a recession and manufacturing globally is already there. 'It seems silly to me,' Bruselas said, 'to think that what is happening in the global economy won't happen in the United States,' which is why expects extended Fed rate cuts to help stave off sowing global conditions through at least the end of next year. Also on the show, Brent Schutte, chief investment strategist at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management, said he hopes the Fed will take a bigger-tna-expected step this week because it's necesary to hold off building inflationary pressures. Plus, Chuck has the Weird Financial News and we revisit a recent chat with Ted Rossman of CreditCards.com.

Episode 7: How Do YOU Want to Live? with Dave Dettmann (and how he helped me find 50K) Today's guest is my very own financial advisor! Let me tell you a little story first. Today's guest is my very own financial adviser! Let me tell you a little story first. Mike and I thought we knew it all when it came to investing...we thought we didn't need an expert helping us and even more so than that, our situation was so dire we were embarrassed to ask for help. Our experience with previous advisers had never been personalized in a way that felt aligned with who we are and what we want out of life and mostly many of them told us advice we already knew (even though we weren't doing it). Our ego stopped us from moving forward. So we did nothing for YEARS. Until Dave. Dave didn't try to win me over with his impressive knowledge or go over my finances in the first meeting, show me portfolios, bios or marketing material. He first and foremost wanted to know what excited us and what our dreams were and what we wanted out of life. Instead of telling me how much money I would need to live on in 30 years he asked me what I love to do and what experiences are important to me. It totally helped me to re-look at how I view investing. In this episode Dave talks about how couples can work together to improve their finances and how to know when it time to ask for help. He also gives practical tips about looking at the type of life you want to live and how to align your finances with those desires. He is cheerful and funny and a total regular guy who at his core wants for his clients exactly what he wants for himself.... a life of impact. Dave is a financial adviser with the Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management company. He has received many honors and recognition within the field of financial planning/advising since he started in 2011. Beyond the industry, and more importantly, Dave is a Christ follower a loving husband to his wife Rachel and dedicated father to his two daughters Adalie (7) and Eliza (4). When he is not guiding clients towards financial security or spending time with his family he spends his time wood working, mountain biking and staying healthy through Crossfit (yes he is one of those Crossfitters). He believes that living a life by design is better than one by default. This shines through in this episode. Dave didn't always work in finance. He was a teacher prior to this and owned a successful photography business. He tells in this episode what made him change careers. His story is such a great example of how changing your net worth sometimes means changing careers and always includes changing your mindset. I can't wait for you to hear all about it. How to reach Dave: Dave Dettmann CFP® CLU® ChFC® phone: (651) 289-6550 Cell: (612) 293-8087 Email: dave.dettmann@nm.com web: http://www.davedettmann-nm.com/ It is my intention that in each episode you gain TONS of value in how you can change your own net worth. There is some exciting things coming up on our show and one of them is the Net Worth It Facebook Group where we will work together to change our net worth. Watch for details on that in next week's episode with some cool tools to help you track your net worth. Cheers friend, xoxo Gretch
