Ep 499. Renee is joined by Dr. Alison Yeung, family physician and creator of @thesmartphoneeffectmd, to talk all things smartphones, social media, and kids. Why are so many parents struggling to set screen time boundaries? How is technology impacting our kids' mental health, attention spans, and motivation? And how do we navigate platforms like Roblox, YouTube Kids, and even school-issued iPads? Renee and Dr. Yeung get real about balancing technology use, setting routines, and why it's not just about “parenting harder”—it's about pushing back against industries designed to hook our kids. If you've ever wondered when to give your child a phone (or if they really need one), how to protect their downtime, or how your phone habits shape theirs, this is a must-listen. "INEVITABLE is a comprehensive account of the greatest upheaval in the transportation industry since the invention of the internal combustion engine. One of the best automotive journalists in the world, Colias delivers an unvarnished retelling of the EV revolution, warts and all. Essential reading for everyone interested in the future of the car industry." - Sean McLain, reporter, Wall Street Journal The $2 trillion global automobile industry has long been dominated by its largest players: the GMs, Volkswagens, and Toyotas of the world. But, as Wall Street Journal reporter and veteran of the US automotive beat Mike Colias writes in the new book INEVITABLE: Inside the Messy, Unstoppable Transition to Electric Vehicles, the auto industry is at an inflection point. The rise of electric vehicles is radically transforming the industry and Colias shows how none of the major players were prepared. For the first time in living memory, startup auto manufacturers are gaining major market share, and Colias provides a dramatic insider account through the lenses of executives, entrepreneurs, engineers, car sales people and customers, of how EVs are upending the industry, transforming economies, and even reshaping the roles vehicles play in our lives. As Colias writes, fifteen years ago EVs were a novelty and no major car manufacturer was considering jumping into the field in any serious way. But a funny thing happened in the ensuing years: EVs started selling in numbers impossible to ignore, and those customers weren't buying Fords and Nissans but Teslas, Rivians and BYDs. And the behemoths didn't really catch on until the upstarts had a large head start. Big automakers are skilled at making adjustments and tweaks year over year, but as Colias writes, creating a successful manufacturing program for an all electric vehicle calls for agility and it isn't as simple as swapping out an internal combustion engine for an electric motor. The process actually requires different skill sets, new vehicle designs and a massive rewiring of their global supply chains.Colias's is a story of hubris, shortsightedness and inertia in which Big Auto executives were blindsided even though the rise of EVs-Tesla in particular-was happening right in front of their eyes. Colias takes readers inside the boardrooms where executives chasing Tesla battle over EV strategies; to the family-run car dealerships wrestling with the decision of whether to sell EVs-or sell their business; the battery factories where scientists try to pack ever more power into the same space; and to some of the countless independent component manufacturers dotting the midwest that have counted on Big Auto as a customer for generations and now face an uncertain future. In a conversation with Lem Yeung, who'd worked on internal combustion engines for Ford for three decades and elected to take the company's buyout offer, Colias reports that the engineer was reflective: The built-in advantages that the incumbent carmakers wielded for more than a century are disappearing as cars become less mechanical and more infused with complex software, Yeung warns. They are entering a race in which they're starting from behind, with companies that suffer none of their legacy drag. The upstarts are outmaneuvering the GMs and Volkswagens on lower-cost battery setups and consumer-friendly tech features. Thinking like a car company has flipped to become a disadvantage. 'I think all the barriers to entry have gone.'" Electric vehicles: Another executive order signed on Trump's first day in office targeted electric vehicles. A tax credit for people buying EVs was scrapped, and federal funds intended to help install charging stations were put on hold. While some funds that have been allocated for charging stations are still expected to be used, the moves are likely to slow the development of the electric vehicle industry in the United States, and help President Trump's ally, Tesla chief executive Elon Musk. While Tesla is the largest EV maker in the country, it has its own network of fast chargers and stands to benefit if rival networks are slow to be built.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Recorded at Evidence Based Perioperative Medicine (EBPOM) in London last year this presentation is part of a series of talks given under the session heading: “Implementation – what works and what doesn't?”. This piece is part one of four, with two more presentations to come and then a fascinating panel discussion to conclude. This first session focuses on the implementation of clinical trials, covering research methodologies, clinical implementations, and their challenges, and looking at the lengthy process of translating medical discoveries into clinical practice, emphasizing the ethical obligation to disseminate trial results effectively. The under-representation of certain demographics in trials, the gap between research findings and clinical practice, and the need for better communication strategies is stressed alongside solutions, including training for researchers, involving key stakeholders from the start, and the role of funders in supporting effective dissemination and implementation of research findings. Our presenter is, Joyce Yeung, Professor of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Warwick. She is Theme Lead of the Emergency, Prehospital, Perioperative and Critical Care Trials group within Warwick Clinical Trials Unit. Clinically she holds appointments as a Consultant in Critical Care Medicine at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. Joyce is Director of UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network. She is joint Clinical Speciality Lead for Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain for West Midlands Comprehensive Research Network. She is also the Chair of Resuscitation Council UK Immediate Life Support Subcommittee and is a member of Scientific and Education Committee at European Resuscitation Council. She serves as expert systematic reviewer and International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation taskforce member. Joyce is Chief Investigator for a major grant examining the impact of volatile versus intravenous anaesthesia in non-cardiac surgery (VITAL trial). Her research interests are applied health research and clinical trials including improving perioperative patient outcomes, chronic pain, post-operative cognitive dysfunction, and resuscitation. Eric Yeung: The LBMA Crisis – Delays, Borrowing, and the Race to Secure Physical Gold

Palisade Radio

Tom welcomes a new guest Eric Yueng to explore the current state of the gold market, focusing on the LBMA's physical delivery delays, the surge in physical gold demand at the COMEX, and the implications for investors. Yueng explains that the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) has seen significant delays in physical gold deliveries, increasing from T+2 or T+4 to T+30 or even T+60. This has led to a surge in physical gold delivery requests at the COMEX, with volumes reaching 15 times normal levels in December and January, and continuing to rise in February. He attributes this surge to investors seeking physical metal rather than cash-settled contracts, driven by concerns over the LBMA's ability to deliver. Yueng discusses the role of exchange-for-physical (EFP) trading pairs, where arbitrageurs typically profit from price differences between COMEX and LBMA markets. However, the current demand for physical delivery has disrupted this mechanism, potentially leading to a "short squeeze" as those unable to secure physical gold are forced to cover their positions at higher prices. He suggests that large institutions, possibly acting on behalf of the U.S. government, are driving much of the physical gold demand. This aligns with reports of significant imports into the U.S., which he believes could be part of efforts to repatriate gold ahead of potential audits or revaluation. Yeung also touches on the role of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) like GLD, noting that borrowing rates have surged as institutions withdraw physical gold. This, combined with the LBMA's reported attempts to borrow gold from foreign central banks, highlights growing concerns about the availability and allocation of physical gold. Looking at China, Yeung notes that the country is preparing for higher gold prices through initiatives like the Gold Accumulation Program, which encourages retail investment in physical gold, and allowing insurance companies to invest in it. These moves are expected to significantly increase institutional demand for gold in China. Yueng contrasts this with the West, where sentiment toward gold remains lukewarm despite high prices, partly due to competition from cryptocurrencies. He predicts that if gold prices continue to rise, particularly beyond $3,500 per ounce, there could be a significant shift in investor behavior and increased demand for mining stocks. Finally, Eric addresses silver, suggesting that its price suppression may end as the U.S. seeks to support domestic mining interests amid manufacturing reshoring efforts. He highlights the growing deficit in silver supply and questions the LBMA's reported inventories. As the Vice President, CMO Services at Find Your Audience Marketing Partner, he leads teams of marketing managers, graphic designers, media buyers, coordinators, and freelancers to develop and implement marketing strategies for organizations across various industries. In this episode, Nathan shares how empathy is crucial for understanding and communicating value, which directly influences pricing and client trust. He emphasized that many web pages fail because they attempt to appeal to everyone rather than focus on a specific audience and problem. Additionally, he advised against charging too little, suggesting that higher rates can be justified when trust is established, and recommends offering multiple pricing options to highlight the value of the primary choice.   Why you have to check out today's podcast: Learn to understand and address your customers' pain points to significantly impact your pricing strategy and boost trust, leading to higher revenue. Find out why many web pages fail to convert and get actionable advice on how to create focused, empathetic web content that resonates with your target audience. Explore how trust plays a crucial role in client relationships and how it can influence pricing decisions, helping you secure higher-value contracts.   "Never give a single price. Think about creative ways to give at least three and make your obvious choice your bottom line." - Nathan Yeung   Topics Covered: 01:07 - Talking about his disciplined approach to health 02:01 - How he got into pricing and his perspectives on pricing 03:53 - Discussing his approach to helping B2B companies "discover revenue" 06:22 - The reactions and learning opportunities that come when a client quickly accepts a price offer 07:48 - The importance of truly understanding and communicating value when helping businesses discover revenue 11:17 - Value creation in B2B and B2C contexts 14:03 - Expanding on the concept of having marketing take on internal communications 15:08 - Two key issues why web pages fail and bringing in additional point about the "curse of knowledge" 18:22 - Discusses the concept of pricing and positioning in business 22:22 - Trust and how it relates to pricing and business growth 23:04 - Talking about his book, 'The Lazy Consumer', and discussing the concept of trust 24:49 - Elaborating on the importance of empathy in sales and how it can trigger a response from customers 25:53 - Underscoring the crucial link between trust and pricing 27:20 - Nathan's best pricing advice   Key Takeaways: "When you forget about that [people are human], you get a lot of people locked into this state of logical thinking. And when you're too logical, it's hard to generate a lot of value. Because when they're logical, they're being highly critical." - Nathan Yeung "Understanding your ideal customer profile and really understanding their true pain points and where they are in a business, you can understand value." - Nathan Yeung "Value makes you really be empathetic, and you really have to understand what is valuable to your customer." - Nathan Yeung "Just because there's a quantifiable change that is valuable, that does not necessarily mean that person values that the most." - Nathan Yeung "HR is great for compliance and process and all that kind of lovely stuff, but they're really not great marketers." - Nathan Yeung "This idea of building culture, while it's important for HR to take care of that and be the accountable part of that, the reality is that marketers are likely the more important person to actually bring that message to market, which is the company in itself." - Nathan Yeung   Connect with Nathan Yeung:  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/yeungnathan/ Website: https://www.findyouraudience.online/   Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mark@impactpricing.com

Wouldn't it be great if your boss had a user guide for achieving success under their leadership? Ann Yeung's team at GEICO, where she serves as the Vice President of Engineering, Head of Enterprise Engineering, received one. In her “user guide,” Ann shares her expectations, values, and tools for successful collaboration that go well beyond pet peeves to establish communicative, empowered teams. In this episode, Ann discusses her transition to GEICO and the critical role of managing corporate functions during transformation. She shares her journey from individual contributor to leader and how she applies the lessons she's learned along the way. Ann offers how her perspective has changed over time, (ex. how experience is important but unique application to any particular scenario is key) and outlines how her leadership values match her personal values: integrity, transparency, and direct communication. As a leader, Ann ensures that her approach includes two critical elements: understanding the problem from the lens of the business stakeholders and carving out time for reflection. Ann discusses welcoming feedback and challenging her teams with growth opportunities with intentional mentorship. She discusses how, as an engineer at heart, her love of data couples with empirical evidence to guide her decision making and the importance of responsible leadership. Our youngest guest is in the house today! I started this show in Hong Kong, and I run this show in Hong Kong. I'm originally from Hong Kong, talking to guests from every corner of the world. Yet, so far, I haven't interviewed any guest from right here in Hong Kong. Today, that changes. I'm excited to bring a local guest to the studio—May Yeung, founder of the charity Art of My Family, a teaching artist, a cancer survivor, a mother to a 11-month-old cute boy. May has experienced many life changes over the years, and she's determined to use the power of art, in her own way, to change lives and create an environmentally sustainable, mentally healthy, and socially inclusive society here in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is not just about business, finance, and money. May has chosen a different path to do well and do good. And as a side note: we've got our youngest guest ever—May's 11-month-old son—joining us on the show, so don't go away! Episode Breakdown: 3:17—From Wall Scribbles to Ceramics: A Childhood Steeped in Art “From the time I was around two years old, I would draw on walls before I could even write my name. By five, my father and I were creating ceramics together. At age 12, my fascination with dadaism and pop art gave me the conviction to become an artist.” "I met Professor Jeff Oppenheimer who gave a lecture on integrating art into daily life, and daily life into art, and the contents of this lecture really helped to form the framework and direction of my art to this day." 6:00—Where Art Meets Music: How Music Has Influenced Her Art Creation 8:41—From Crunching Numbers to Crafting Impact: How Finance Led May to Art and Social Change 11:20—Faith Over Fear: How Battling Cancer Transformed a Perfectionist into a Celebrator of Life's Small Wins "I think the cancer experience really give me Let me feel a greater sense of conviction to serve the underprivileged" 16:25—Art for Archer: How Motherhood and Heritage Shape Her Creations 18:09—Dim Sum and Chinese Checkers: Weaving Hong Kong's Culture into Every Piece of Art 21:34—Memorable Art Pieces “What If” and “Blossom Love”: Sculpting Bridges Between Cultures and Endless Possibilities 23:19—From Corporate CSR to Creative Compassion: The Birth of Art of My Family 30:00—May's Life Mission to Inspire the Next Generation: The Three C's of Art Education and the Role of a Teaching Artist Connect with us: Host: Vince Chan | Guest: May Yeung Chief Change Officer: Make Change Ambitiously. If you are like me and want to make sure you are setting your kids (and yourself!) up for success with boundaries and conversations around social media with your kids, then this episode is for you! What are the effects you have seen from social media on kids? I am a data girl so give me all your data!  I want to delay when my child is involved with social media, but their friends are on it, my child feels left out, and so now I feel like the bad parent. Do you have words of advice?  What can I do now to prepare my kids for the future where social media is so prevalent? And for the parents who's kids are already in the thick of social media, what can they do right now for their kids? Most of my listeners and followers want to know when is the appropriate time to allow your child access to a smartphone or social media? How do you know when they are ready? Dr. Alison Yeung is a family physician from Ontario, Canada. Over the past decade, she has come to recognize that children are struggling in unprecedented ways. After recognizing the role that screens and social media are playing in their presentation, she began to dive into the research on this topic. Feeling that there is an undeniable association, she felt compelled to speak out. She has created an Instagram account to educate and empower parents to change the narrative, and has also worked with local schools to help implement cellphone policies by educating staff and parents.
