Economist Kotlikoff: Recession is coming, cut back hard on the equities

Laurence Kotlikoff, professor of economics at Boston University and the founder of Maxifi.com — which helps investors bring economics into their financial planning decisions — says investors who have spent decades thinking the stock market rebounds from every dip and decline could be in for a different story with a coming recession, and he thinks they should be trying to lock in their standard of living rather than focusing on historic rates of return. To that end, he says he has cut his personal equity exposure from 60 percent of the portfolio to 20-25 percent. "I do see only downside risk from what's going on," Kotlikoff says. "Even if there is nothing changed on average, the uncertainty itself is enough to produce a recession and a big drop in the stock market." Ted Rossman discusses a recent Bankrate.com survey which showed that more than half of Americans say they will spend less on discretionary items like travel, dining out and live entertainment, but he also notes how plans to limit spending often fail to translate into action and reality. Plus, Chuck answers a listener's question about how to turn the portfolio of his younger self into something more age appropriate and mature.

The early shakeup shows just how disruptive the new trade landscape could become.Stellantis paused production at Canadian and Mexican plants and laid off 1,000 U.S. workers.Infiniti halted U.S.-bound production of the QX50 and QX55 “until further notice.”VW stopped rail shipments from Mexico; Audi is holding vehicles at U.S. ports post-tariff. JLR is temporarily pausing US shipments.GM is boosting pickup production in Indiana, and Mercedes may shift another model to Alabama.Ferrari and Ineos raised prices up to 11%, while Ford and Stellantis launched deep discounts to keep buyers interested.“Consumers will feel financial pain faster than they will see new jobs,” warned S&P Global's Stephanie Brinley.Once criticized for lagging in the EV race, Toyota is charting a new path with more in-house models and global production—but with tempered expectations. The automaker is still prioritizing flexibility as it balances EV growth with its hybrid-heavy portfolio. The Japanese manufacturer aims to launch 15 internally developed EVs by 2027, including several Lexus models.New production sites in the U.S., Thailand, and Argentina are planned to hedge tariff risks and improve delivery timelines. The target is 1 million EVs per year by 2027—down from earlier projections of 1.5 million by 2026.In 2024, Toyota sold just under 140,000 EVs, less than 2% of its global volume of over 10 million vehicles.A new survey reveals Gen Z's growing distrust of credit cards, with many opting for debit, cash, and peer-to-peer options instead. High APRs, confusing terms, and debt fears are driving a generational payment shift that could reshape future retail habits.68% of Gen Z say credit card bills cause stress; 51% say cards give them the “ick.”Debit (68%) and cash (67%) top Gen Z's preferred payment methods—only 35% use credit cards, with 82% of respondents overall saying credit cards are “financially dangerous.”57% of Gen Z admit they don't fully understand card terms, and 53% have been surprised by interest charges.“It doesn't make sense to pay 20%, 25% or 30% in interest just to earn a few percentage points in cash back,” said Ted Rossman, Bankrate senior analyst.Join hosts Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Jeff Rosenkranz fixed income portfolio manager at Shelton Capital Management — manager of the Shelton Tactical Credit Fund — says that what investors are facing more than sticky inflation and interest rates is sticky uncertainty. That doubt has increased volatility, especially in individual companies, industries and sectors as proposed tariffs play out, but that turbulence represents new opportunities for credit buyers, especially in intermediate term corporate and high-yield bonds. David Trainer of New Constructs puts Spotify back in the Danger Zone, noting that a recent pop in the company's stock price has inflated to the point where valuations reflect revenues so unrealistic that a 50 percent haircut in the stock would be considered mild. Plus, Ted Rossman discusses a Bankrate.com study which shows that more than 80 percent of Americans spend money on at least one of six common financial vices (alcohol, lottery tickets, casino games, tobacco/cigarettes/e-cigarettes, sports betting, and marijuana/recreational cannabis), and Scott Davies, chief investment officer at CDAM, talks small-cap stocks in the Market Call.

Ted Rossman says that since the Fed cut rates, mortgage rates have actually climbed. He adds that the “golden handcuffs” of homeowners locked into lower mortgage rates will eventually break as people are forced to move for one reason or another, adding supply to the market. He notes that while credit card balances and delinquencies are up, banks aren't very concerned about it yet. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Jerremy Newsome, founder at Real Life Trading, says he thinks the stock market has entered another period like the Roaring 20s of a century ago, and while that period ended withthe start of the Great Depression, Newsome says he thinks "we're in the middle right now. ... I see that we have truly three to six good years left of overall, bull sustainable markets before we have that big, big, big meltdown." Jeffrey Hirsh, chief executive at Hirsch Holdings — the editor of the Stock Trader's Almanac, which is known for researching how the presidential election cycles impact the stock market — says he sees the current bull market running at least until the mid-term elections in 2026, and he notes that a Republican president at a time with a Republican-led House and Senate typically tends to result in strong market times. While not the best combination — which occurs when a Democrat is in the White House but Republicans control Congress — conservative policies generally favor the markets. Plus, Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate.com, on a study showing that more than half of Americans made at least one impulse buy last holiday season, driven more often by pursuit of "a good deal" rather than a treat for themselves, and Chuck answers a listener's question about "the biggest risk we are facing today."

Shoot us a Text. We're together in-person this Thursday morning as we reflect on the 100 years of Carter Myers Automotive. Today we're talking about how plug-in hybrids may not be the transition to EVs that we thought, how Tesla may have already exhausted its Cybertruck reservation list and how more Americans are concerned about their credit card debt.Show Notes with linksMany have pointed to the plug-in hybrid as the ideal transition vehicle from ICE to BEV. But a new study from J.D. Power suggests that plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) may not be the electric vehicle solution consumers are looking for.PHEV satisfaction scored 669 on a 1,000-point scale, lower than BEVs (716) and premium EVs (738).PHEVs account for just 1.9% of U.S. vehicle sales, while BEVs hold 9.4% and conventional hybrids 10.7%.High purchase and maintenance costs are major drawbacks, with compact PHEVs averaging $48,700 compared to BEVs at $36,900.As of August 2024, there are 41 PHEV models in the U.S., compared to 39 hybrid models and 60 BEV models."Dealers are the frontline educators in the EV space," says Brent Gruber of J.D. Power, encouraging them to bridge knowledge gaps around issues like range, charging, and cost.Tesla's Cybertruck has seen impressive sales, with over 27,000 units sold in the U.S. in 2024. However, the company appears to be running through its massive reservation list faster than anticipated, with new buyers getting their trucks much sooner than expected.Tesla sold 16,000 Cybertrucks in Q3 2024, following 11,000 in the first half of the year.Despite claims of up to 2 million reservations, buyers can now get a Cybertruck within 60 days of ordering. Some early reservation holders report being offered additional trucks much earlier than anticipated. The base model, originally priced at $39,900, is no longer available, with current models starting around $100,000.A new survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reveals that many Americans are growing more concerned about their ability to manage credit card debt. The likelihood of missing a payment in the next three months has climbed to 14.2%, the highest since April 2020.Delinquencies on credit card accounts over 90 days past due reached 9.1%, along with a rise in bankruptcy filings.U.S. household debt now totals $17.8 trillion, with credit card balances hitting $1.14 trillion, up almost 6% year-over-year.Middle-income households are feeling the squeeze, with 44% reporting more financial worries than last year."For people with good incomes and good credit scores, things are going well... Now the other half, that can be a much more troublesome situation," noted Bankrate analyst Ted Rossman.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email
