He's been called a fortune teller, a prophet, a clairvoyant, a scammer... Nostradamus is said to have accurately predicted every major event in history, from the JFK assassination to 9/11 to the Covid pandemic. His books are still bestsellers, and people still live their lives today according to his readings of the stars, even though the French astrologer has been dead for over 500 years. So was 'Michel de Nostredame' and his most famous book The Prophecies (Les Prophéties) the real deal? How did he so accurately predict things like the existence of Hitler, or the exact year Queen Elizabeth II would die, hundreds of years before it all happened? Or... was he just a travelling salesman who started selling fake horoscopes for money and accidentally lucked into a very profitable scam? Michel de Nostredame, better known as Nostradamus, was a 16th-century French physician and astrologer. He is widely famous for his book "Les Prophéties," which consists of a collection of 942 quatrains (four-line poems) that are said to predict future events. Although many of Nostradamus' predictions are open to interpretation, some have been linked to significant events in history, such as the French Revolution, the rise of Napoleon, and the 9/11 attacks. Nostradamus was born in 1503 in the town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in southern France. He received a medical degree from the University of Montpellier and later became a physician, treating patients during outbreaks of the bubonic plague. In addition to his medical work, Nostradamus was known for his interest in astrology and the occult, which led him to create his predictions for the future. Despite the mystique surrounding Nostradamus and his prophecies, many of his predictions are vague and lack specificity, leading to multiple interpretations. Some believe that Nostradamus had a gift for seeing into the future, while others view his predictions as nothing more than clever wordplay and superstition. Regardless of one's beliefs, Nostradamus continues to be a topic of fascination and discussion hundreds of years after his death.

Welcome to Episode 6 of Reddit on Wiki. It doesn't take a prophecy to guess that it's John's turn to present this time around. Speaking of prophecies, we discuss one of the most famous figures in history: Nostradamus. Was he accurate when he predicted the future? Are Nostradamus' prophecies legit? Tune in this episode as we discuss his life, death, and some of his famous predictions. Michel de Nostredame (depending on the source, 14 or 21 December 1503 – 1 or 2 July 1566), usually Latinised as Nostradamus,[a] was a French astrologer, physician and reputed seer, who is best known for his book Les Prophéties, a collection of 942 poetic quatrains[b] allegedly predicting future events. The book was first published in 1555. Nostradamus's father's family had originally been Jewish, but had converted to Catholic Christianity a generation before he was born. He studied at the University of Avignon, but was forced to leave after just over a year when the university closed due to an outbreak of the plague. He worked as an apothecary for several years before entering the University of Montpellier, hoping to earn a doctorate, but was almost immediately expelled after his work as an apothecary (a manual trade forbidden by university statutes) was discovered. He first married in 1531, but his wife and two children died in 1534 during another plague outbreak. He fought alongside doctors against the plague before remarrying to Anne Ponsarde, with whom he had six children. He wrote an almanac for 1550 and, as a result of its success, continued writing them for future years as he began working as an astrologer for various wealthy patrons. Catherine de' Medici became one of his foremost supporters. His Les Prophéties, published in 1555, relied heavily on historical and literary precedent, and initially received mixed reception. He suffered from severe gout toward the end of his life, which eventually developed into edema. He died on 1 or 2 July 1566. Many popular authors have retold apocryphal legends about his life. In the years since the publication of his Les Prophéties, Nostradamus has attracted many supporters, who, along with much of the popular press, credit him with having accurately predicted many major world events.[6][7] Most academic sources reject the notion that Nostradamus had any genuine supernatural prophetic abilities and maintain that the associations made between world events and Nostradamus's quatrains are the result of misinterpretations or mistranslations (sometimes deliberate).[8] These academics argue that Nostradamus's predictions are characteristically vague, meaning they could be applied to virtually anything, and are useless for determining whether their author had any real prophetic powers. They also point out that English translations of his quatrains are almost always of extremely poor quality, based on later manuscripts, produced by authors with little knowledge of sixteenth-century French, and often deliberately mistranslated to make the prophecies fit whatever events the translator believed they were supposed to have predicted.

Why the pension reform in France has everyone on edge and is blocking train travel through the holidays. Also, why keeping English out of the French language is more than a matter of words. And the search to unravel a mysterious inscription on a rock in Brittany. The Academie Française, founded in 1635 to protect the French language, is the butt of many a joke about the French. Some scoffed at a recent communiqué warning officials about their overuse of 'franglais'. But as Sir Michael Edwards, one of the Academy's 40 Immortals, explains, concern over English creeping into French goes deeper than words. It reflects the way we think about the world. (Listen @4'50) A rock in a bay in Brittany has made the news recently after the local town launched a contest to decipher the writing on it. The inscription is believed to date from the 1700s, and is at least partly in the regional Breton language. We explore the mystery of the rock as part of a look into Brittany's history, language and culture (Listen @16'00) Michel de Nostredame, aka Nostradamus, was born on 14 (or 15) December 1503, in Provence.
