Don't mess with Texas? More like don't mess with Section 504—and Kaleigh Brendle. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 protects the rights of people with disabilities in universities, hospitals, and other institutions that receive federal financial assistance. But in September, 17 states filed a lawsuit claiming Section 504 is unconstitutional as it stands. Their argument? That recent guidance from the Biden administration, particularly those including gender dysphoria as a disability and emphasizing accommodations be provided in integrated settings, goes too far. Kaleigh Brendle joins Marissa (again!) on Blonde & Blind to unpack what this lawsuit could mean for Section 504 and the civil rights of the disability community. They tackle the misconception that the lawsuit only targets trans people, and stress the importance of cross-community allyship in the fight for justice.Kaleigh Brendle is a senior at Villanova University studying English, Justice & Peace, and Argumentation & Advocacy. She's heavily involved with the National Federation of the Blind and is on the executive board of Villanova's disability alliance LEVEL. Kaleigh is extremely passionate about disability rights and is an aspiring lawyer. When the tenets of one's faith and the realities of your LIVED experience, your firsthand experience—are in stark contrast the cognitive dissonance is overwhelming. It can be paralyzing. There have been times that it has been so for me. If that is you—I feel you, I see you, I get you. According to the Hafen's in Faith is Not Blind, "Our experience with real life often introduces a new dimension—a growing awareness of a gap between the real and the ideal, between what IS and what OUTGHT to be. Let's call this distance between where we are and where we want to be 'the gap.' —such experiences can produce an unsettling sense of uncertainty…" Listen to today's episde as I share that I have learned how leaning into the uncertainty and the unknown can be a blessing. It's actually much more mentally healthy than ignoring, resisting, or avoiding it. I'm currently in the process of creating a group program specifically for mamas of LGBTQ+ kiddos. The core message of Christianity consists of four main points: 1. God loves us and he created us to worship and glorify him. 2. We have failed to worship and obey God. 3. In his death and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for our sins and therefore we can be forgiven by God. 4. We each need to make Jesus the Saviour and Lord of our lives.Christian apologists defend these four points in various ways. One way is that used by Dr. William Lane Craig in which he provides several arguments for the existence of God, and also historical arguments for Jesus' resurrection from the dead. To see more about how Craig defends his arguments, you can check out his debates by searching for him on YouTube. April 11-17 Elder Bruce C. Hafen, former member of the Seventy and an author, joins Scot and Maurine Proctor today to look more deeply and understand with greater clarity the magnificence and personal nature of the Savior's atonement. He helps us see how the atonement is not just for sinners, but for the range of human weakness, miscalculation, negligence and error that humanity in a fallen world are liable to. He teaches us what the place of grace is in our lives and how the Savior's sacrifice can help us see our weaknesses and be transformed through Him. Daily repentance can become a daily refreshment. Elder Hafen is the author of The Broken Heart; Faith is Not Blind, any many other significant books.
When some Christians first learn about apologetics they can get excited about "proving" that Christianity is true. But "proving" that it's true is not as simple as it might sound. It's not that Christianity lacks sound evidence. (There is plenty of evidence.) The problem is that what counts as proof to one person, does not count as proof to another. This is especially apparent in the case of Richard Dawkins. When he was asked what would persuade him that God existed, he responded with "I'm starting to think that nothing would." If nothing can persuade an atheist like Dawkins, that should demonstrate how difficult it is to "prove" that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Stand-up comedian, George Carlin, says that God does not exist and that the Bible is (essentially) a book of fairy tales. Apologetics is all about examining and critiquing these types of claims. The Bible says in 1 Peter 3:15 that Christians should always be prepared to give an answer for the hope that is in them. When Christians use apologetics to engage people with “gentleness and respect,” they take the time to understand what other people believe, care about them as individuals, and respectfully challenge their ideas. Many professors and scholars use “apologetics” in a negative sense but that is not how apologists understand the term. I titled this mornings message, “Love is Not Blind” as we will read that God's love is so amazing that even though He knows everything about us He still loves us… You recall from our study in chapters 1-3 the apostle Paul removed all doubt that all have sinned and fallen short of His glory. Any way you cut it, everyone of us, from the self righteous sinner to the religious to the full blown open sinner. We have all sinned.
Neil DeGrasse Tyson alleges that when the religions of the world claim certain things to be true, they are just declaring “personal truths.” However, this is a perversion of what those religions are all about. For example, Islam's adherence to strict monotheism is certainly not something that Muslims regard as a mere subjective, personal claim. This can be seen from the fact that the earliest Muslims were willing to suffer for their beliefs. Some Muslims will also kill, or threaten to kill, those who leave Islam. But that is not the type of behaviour one would expect from someone who thinks their religion is just a “personal truth,” akin to one's favourite flavour of ice cream. This fact even applies to those religions, such as Hinduism and Bahaism, which claim that all religions are true. That is, when they say that all religions are true, they are making an objective claim about all of reality. These claims are either true or false. Anything less is a distortion of what they are all about. Neil DeGrasse Tyson claims that "religious truths" are just "personal truths." If this was correct, it would put Christian truth claims such as, "Jesus rose from the dead," in the same category as claims such as, "Bubble ice cream is the best flavour in the whole world." But this is a serious distortion of what the Bible teaches and how Christians have always understood their own beliefs. Jesus, his disciples, and generations of Christians have been willing to suffer and die for what they held to be true. That's not something that people will do for personal, subjective truths akin to one's favorite flavour of ice cream. Tyson's view of religious claims is disrespectful and a perversion of what Christianity is all about. Michael Shermer alleges that the arguments and evidence for Christianity only convinces those that already believe. But this is not true. Many people have examined the evidence and changed their minds. Sometimes they go all the way and become a follower of Jesus, and sometimes they just take steps in that direction. One example of this is the late Antony Flew. Flew was a professional philosopher and committed atheist who became known as a spokesperson for atheism. However, toward the end of his life, he began to have doubts and he eventually concluded that some type of divine being existed. Today on the podcast we're discussing the complexity of simple faith, the Church's recent change to their temple marriage policy, Chukar's Cherries, and as always a spotlight of an inspiring woman. In a world of uncertainty, we often encounter unexpected questions and complexities that can challenge our faith. Faith in God, faith in ourselves and faith in the people around us can be undermined in the midst of such unexpected questions and complexities. Bruce and Marie Hafen join us to offer fresh concepts and timeless tools with their new book, "Faith is Not Blind," on this episode of "Therefore, What?"
Bruce and Marie Hafen are most recently the authors of the book "Faith is Not Blind", in which they "acknowledge complicated gospel issues, yet clearly and gently guide readers through the steps necessary to work through complexity, develop informed testimonies, and become filled with the faith that comes from knowing God." Bruce has served as president of Rick's College, dean of the J. Reuben Clark Law School and provost at Brigham Young University, president of the St. George Temple, and in the First Quorum of the Seventy. He is also the author of several books. Marie has served alongside and co-authored books with Bruce. She also taught religion, literature and writing at both BYU-Idaho and BYU in Provo, and served on the Young Women General Board and the Board of Directors for the Deseret News. In this interview, the Hafens share experiences helping young people deal with uncertainty, doubt, and trial as they struggle to reconcile the simple faith of youth with the complex realities of adulthood. Faith is Not Blind is a book by Elder Bruce C. and Sister Marie Hafen and published by Deseret Book. This book addresses the many ways that individuals encounter the challenges to developing faith or the language of testimony. In preparing to serve missions, while on a mission, or when someone returns from missionary service, we all encounter stages of faith progression. But how do we manage those experiences in such a way to come out the other side with greater faith? In this book, and with this interview, Elder and Sister Hafen discuss their mission, temple, and personal experiences dealing with difficult issues about how to travel the trials of faith, the challenges of life, and develop a stronger relationship with God as a result.
