This famously was supposed to be the pilot to a tv show, but the guy directing it got another gig, so it turned into a one off. I've never seen so many cigarettes being smoked at the same time. In its attempt to capture the chaotic comedic alchemy leading up to the first-ever SNL broadcast, Jason Reitman's SATURDAY NIGHT is carrying the weight of the show's nearly 50-year legacy and its personification in protagonist Lorne Michaels. Whether it manages to get off the ground despite that is up for debate in the first half of this week's discussion, before we bring in another tense evening in '70s New York to see how ORIGINAL CAST ALBUM: COMPANY compares in its depiction of a late-night highwire act and the pressure to pull off a performance with many moving parts on a deadline, and what each depiction reveals about the nature of creative collaboration. And in Your Next Picture Show we offer a brief glimpse at an alternate-universe episode in which we paired SATURDAY NIGHT with Robert Altman's final film, A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about ORIGINAL CAST ALBUM: COMPANY, SATURDAY NIGHT, and anything else in the world of film by sending an email or voice memo to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. Capturing the tense hours leading to a pivotal moment in live TV history, the new SATURDAY NIGHT is defined by a looming deadline that reminded us of another New York-based all-nighter captured on film: D.A. Pennebaker's 1970 TV pilot turned documentary film ORIGINAL CAST ALBUM: COMPANY. Despite being less than an hour long, the fly-on-the-wall document of Stephen Sondheim and company recording the definitive version of their Broadway hit in a single night provides no shortage of nuance to dig into like we're Sondheim parsing an F sharp that's drifted to A. And in Feedback we bring a comment from a recent bonus episode on BLINK TWICE over to the main show in order to discuss the relative value of movie twists. COMPANY COMPOSER: Stephen Sondheim LYRICIST: Stephen Sondheim BOOK: George Furth DIRECTOR: Hal Prince CHOREOGRAPHER: Michael Bennett PRINCIPLE CAST: Beth Howland (Amy), Dean Jones (Bobby), Elaine Stritch (Joanne) OPENING DATE: Apr 26, 1970 CLOSING DATE: Jan 01, 1972 PERFORMANCES: 705 SYNOPSIS: On his 35th birthday, bachelor Robert is confronted by his happily, and unhappily, married friends, as well as his three girlfriends, who all push him towards committing to another human being.  Stephen Sondheim had tremendous early success as a Broadway lyricist, but until the success of Company, his work as a composer could not be regarded as commercially successful. Based on a series of sketches about married couples by actor George Furth, Sondheim and director Hal Prince developed a musical which navigated a bachelor's relationships with his lovers and married friends. Rick Pender promotes Company's significance as an early book musical which, through Boris Aronson's design, Prince and Michael Bennett's staging, Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations, subject matter, and rough narrative, epitomized contemporary storytelling and broke away from the conventions of traditional musical theatre. Later revivals of the show staged by John Doyle and Marianne Elliott employed tactics which kept Company at the cutting edge of the art form and in dialogue with timely societal critique. Rick Pender- From 2004 to 2016 Rick Pender edited The Sondheim Review; in 2017 he launched EverythingSondheim.org. His book The Stephen Sondheim Encyclopedia was published in 2021. He has written about theater for Cincinnati CityBeat since it began publishing in 1994, and he was the paper's arts and entertainment editor from 1998 until 2006. Ohio's Society of Professional Journalists recognized him the state's best arts critic in 2002 and 2017. The Film Stage Show

Welcome back to Intermission, a spin-off podcast from The Film Stage Show. In a time when arthouse theaters are hurting more than ever and there are a plethora of streaming options at your fingertips, we wanted to introduce new conversations that put a specific focus on the films that are foundational or perhaps overlooked in cinephile culture. Led by yours truly, Michael Snydel, Intermission is a 1-on-1 supplementary discussion podcast that focuses on one arthouse, foreign, or experimental film per episode as picked by the guest. For our eighth episode, I talked to film critic Kyle Turner, about D.A. Pennebaker's 1970 documentary, Original Cast Album: Company, which is exclusively available on The Criterion Channel. Originally conceived as a pilot, the film recounts parts of the laborious 16-hour recording process of the cast album for Sondheim's musical Company. Of a piece with Pennebaker's other cinematic explorations of larger-than-life personas like Dont Look Back and Monterey Pop, it's a film that's equally concerned with the analog processes of studio mixing and the impossibility of capturing perfection. The best exhibition of that struggle comes in the film's climax when Elaine Stritch (as Joanne) is physically unable to perform one of the musical's showstoppers, “The Ladies Who Lunch,” as a visibly sulking Sondheim watches in the studio. It's a sequence that's been affectionately spoofed as recently as a popular episode of the Documentary Now! series and has been picked apart as meme material. As Kyle playfully muses, “It's a moment that nearly every gay man knows” while speaking to its lingering cultural legacy. On a purely cinematic and musical level, it's a magnificent scene––but it's also a compact metaphor for the paradox of perfection. Appropriately, our Intermission conversation focused on the mutability of the text and how its many ambiguities harmonize with its fixed elements. Parts of the conversation covered common Sondheim- and Company-related questions like Bobby's perceived––or at least intuitable––queerness or the linguistic gymnastics of the lyrics. But we also found time to discuss commitment as it relates to living in New York, how being a film critic informs Kyle's reading of Company, and the shifting but still relevant political questions of Sondheim's text. Intermission episodes are shared exclusively with our Patreon community before being posted to The Film Stage Show's main feed. Original Cast Album: Company is a 53-minute documentary by the late great legend, D.A. Pennebaker. It documents the original cast recording of the theatrical 1970 musical, Company, by Stephen Sondheim. Jim's obsession with seeing this documentary began last year when he saw the IFC Documentary Now! Spoof on this film, Co-op. Now, thanks to The Criterion Channel, Jim got his wish--and he's obsessed. On this week's episode of Stuff We've Seen, Jim and Teal discuss Company, the Documentary Now! spoof, and the genius of D.A. Pennebaker's fly-on-the-wall camerawork, and tension-building editing. Also on the program, Jim takes a dive into some additional Criterion Channel offerings from filmmaker Cheryl Dunye. Dunye's 1992 Watermelon Woman is an interesting, self-reflexive part narrative, part documentary, part mocumentary look at black lesbian issues, and the history of black female representation in film. It serves as a reminder for Jim that not all film offerings need to be feature commercial narratives.  Also on this week's agenda is Jim re-examining Gus Van Sant's 1991 follow-up to Drugstore Cowboy, My Own Private Idaho. Idaho is currently playing on Criterion Channel as part of Criterion's Queersighted: Turn the Gaze Around series. And if that is not enough for you, dear listener, Jim watched a truly bizarre 1971 offering, Daughters of Darkness, courtesy of Amazon Prime, and Teal watched Trolls: World Tour. Oh, and we find out that Teal hates Harry Potter. So there is a ton to unpack. Get at it!
