Jamal Sul has been making Irish Arabic electronic music as Moving Still since 2016. His productions link his Arabic heritage, with his love of synthesizers, dance music and buzzy bangers. Moving Still's music is unique in how it brings together styles of music from the SWANA region (Southwest Asia and North Africa) with European and American club genres like Italo, electro, acid, breakbeats, house and more. Jamal's project has been in the ascendancy with releases on Cooking with Palms Trax, Orange Tree Edits, Dar Disku and his latest Close To The Shams EP on the Bordello A Parigi label. His 2022 Boiler Room set from London is an all-timer for me, and his Ouddy Bangers series has seen him put a club edit spin on pop, disco and dance classics from Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco and Kuwait. I talk to Jamal about all of it: his big gigs, productions, edits, influences, heritage and how Ireland has been slow to catch up on Moving Still until recently. And he picks a selection of songs that has inspired his music (listed below). Up next on the DJ front for Moving Still is the latest edition of Klub Sukar at Yamamori Tengu on Saturday April 19th. Tracks played: Moving Still - Al Disco Haram Cheick Madani - Laya Habibi Ragheb Alama - El hob al Kabir Marvellous Melodicos - sing oh (zagalo mix) Moving Still -La Titasil Feeya Haruomi Hosono - Laugh Gas Omar Souleyman - Warni Warni Moving Still - Bang of Luban Ahmed Fakroun - Soleil Soleil Ihsan Al Munzer - Jamilah Ettab - Ghorba Wa Moghtaribin (Exile and Exiled) Chaba Yamina - Sidi Mansour (Moving Still Edit) * Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord community Listen on Apple | Android | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed | Pod.Link
This week on Select, we have a special set from Dublin-based Saudi-born maestro Moving Still marking THREE HUNDRED episodes of our exclusive mix series
The beloved DJ unpacks his most influential records in our flagship live series, Playing Favourites, recorded at Dekmantel in August. Palms Trax, the beloved British DJ and producer considered a "veteran" of the scene at only 33 years old, hit it big with a career breakout back in 2015. Since then, he's become known for his long-running radio show and record label, Cooking With Palms Trax, where he releases new music, reissues and more. His style is soulful, gravitating towards low-BPM house, disco, zouk and everything in between. Recorded at Dekmantel in August, this RA Exchange is the latest edition of our flagship live series, Playing Favourites, where we invite artists to curate and dissect some of the records that shaped their approach to music. Palms Trax speaks to RA editor Gabriel Szatan about the song that acted as a gateway to his musical education; the track that turned him onto the idea of making music; and the band that he considers to be the "coolest of all time," as well as forthcoming music on his own label. What unites these releases, Palms Trax says, is a powerful, ageless and immediately accessible sensibility. They aren't about technical mastery but about feeling. As music-making has become easier with the advent of perfectly engineered online samples, there's more and more appeal in music with humanity and character. Listen to the episode in full.

Bside Incoming: Seren Seo We're excited to make a return to the Bside turntables with an Edinburgh based DJ from Manchester. Among other events she can be found hosting a night with friends at the city's notorious Cowgate venue Sneaky Pete's, and last year, shared a line up at FLY Open Air with both local legends and some serious heavyweights like Palms Trax and a previous guest of ours Helena Star. It's a pleasure, then, to sit back and let Seren Seo guide us through the lesser known tracks in her vinyl collection: From the abstract and orchestral, through the jazz and downtempo electronica, before taking things up a notch with the kind of rhythms that make her DJ sets so energetic and enjoyable. Bosq, Producer, DJ & Multi-instrumentalist, has been exploring the intersections of Afro-Latin music with Disco, Funk, Reggae, House and Hip Hop for years. Since 2013 and the release of his first album, his musicianship and craft have matured without losing any of the passion or imagination with which he approaches every project. His pursuit for collaborating authentically rather than simply appropriating musical styles from afar brought him first to Puerto Rico, where over a two week stay he recorded the entire Bosq y La Candela All-Stars - San Jose 51 in Old San Juan with legendary musicians like Tempo Alomar and Roberto Roena. Now, with 5 full original albums and countless remixes and singles under his belt (for labels as diverse and legendary as Ubiquity, Fania, Defected, Soul Clap and more), he creates and resides full time in Medellín, Colombia, one of the worlds most legendary musical melting pots. Bosq's music has seen consistent play from the likes of Gilles Peterson & Craig Charles on the BBC, KCRW, RinseFM & other legendary radio stations, while Dj's like Kerri Chandler, Poolside, Yuksek, Palms Trax, Soul Clap, & GUTS give his tunes constant rotation in clubs and at festivals. Tours have taken Bosq across North & South America, Europe, and Asia, to clubs and festivals like Rakastella (Miami), OYA (Oslo), Boomtown Fair (UK) and many more. He has shared stages with the likes of Joe Claussel, Bobbito, J Rocc & Tony Touch to name a few. His music has been featured in films and television such as The Catch, You're The Worst, Broad City, and more.

Bside Incoming: Moving Still The latest instalment of the Bside Podcast comes from a prolific producer of Irish and Saudi heritage, he's a familiar face on the Dublin scene, and an artist dedicated to the importing, editing, and sharing of music from Arabia. It's Moving Still. It is always a pleasure to be guided through the most treasured music of such a passionate collector, finding lots of new tracks and interesting tales along the way. Many of his selections have served as inspiration for his own work, which seeks to unearth his roots while stamping his own modern mark on the style with electrifying bass lines and acid tones. It is little surprise, given his penchant for the exploration of Arabic music, that Moving Still would begin a collaboration with our past guests Dar Disku in 2019 when he released his bass heavy edit of the wedding classic Bas Ismaa Meny and the hugely infectious disco rework of Sidi Mansour. The latter earning the approval of Palms Trax, Hunnee, Skatebard, Nabihah Iqbal and Esa Williams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r18FyY_cdyo While we eagerly await his future releases, we're blessed to have him pick out the best of his Bsides for us. Expect everything from the soothing and soulful to disco infused dance floor tracks. Soulspace (Bangalore, India) Soulspace distances himself with more exploratory tempos and an experimental beat-maker approach, of which cities like Los Angeles or London are particularly well known for, yet the electronica producer is worlds apart. Hailing from Bangalore, India he’s capable of shifting moods from downtempo electronica to a more dance-floor friendly approach of 4/4 summertime grooves with his signature melodic & soulful sounds. His stunning debut self-titled LP had garnered rave reviews & support from stalwarts such as Laurent Garnier, Claude Von Stroke, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Mark Farina, Robert Owens and Pablo Bolivar. His live sets are deep, emotive yet dance floor oriented, with his signature sound. It’s a journey in sound with no genre constraints. As a DJ he believes not just about mixing two records but rather in telling stories with his sets infused with subliminal messages that keeps you hooked onto every beat. Having shared the stage with artists like Soul Clap, DJ Koze, Troy Pierce, HVOB, Shigeto, Parra for Cuva, Palms Trax, Garden City Movement, he now co-runs a record label/artists collective known as Lowlit with Frame/ Frame. The aim of the label is to provide a platform for forward thinking and most talented Indian music producers. He has played alongside with some of the notable artists, the best clubs & festivals like Magnetic Fields , NH7 and Future Theory Festival in India. Garnering attention from international aficionados he's been also getting signed to respected and, critically acclaimed International Record Labels like Traum Schallplatten. In just a short space of time and with but a few releases, Berlin based Brit Jay Donaldson has carved out his own house style. Referencing old school Chicago nostalgia whilst coming laden with analogue textures and jacked up beats, his sounds have come in the form of a couple of EPs on Lobster Theremin and are soon to be released on a debut EP for Dekmantel (out on March 16). His In Gold EP features three more spiritual house cuts with crisp percussion and elastic basslines, cosmic synths and heartfelt pads that have real purpose. Ahead of that, though, he serves up the next instalment in our podcast series. Starting with some deep, melodic house music the mix then smoothly transitions through some tropical sounding beats and painfully emotive vocal grooves that being to pick up the pace. Classics like No Smoke’s 1989 cut ‘Koro Koro’ then proves Palms Trax digs deep for his musical nuggets as he journeys through hip house, Latin inflected broken beat and more experimental and harder hitting fare in the final section. The style is considered and cerebral, the music is lush and evocative and the selections are brave and fresh. As such, this is a subtly stirring mix that will awaken your week in the nicest of ways.
