Manik Suri is implementing smart technology into cooling, ushering in the era of Cold Chain 2.0. Before founding GlacierGrid in 2020, Manik finished top of his class at Harvard, went to Cambridge for a masters in international relations, returned to Harvard for a law degree, co-founded the Governance Lab, with stops at storied institutions like DE Shaw and the White House Economic Council along the way. Cooling technology has lagged behind other industries in the clean energy transition, but GlacierGrid's all-in-one management platform is using smart technology to bridge that gap and build a more sustainable, advanced, and efficient cold chain.Hear Manik share how he's pursuing dual passions for entrepreneurship and positive impact, why cooling technology is vital for the modern world, and how smart technology can decarbonize an entire industry. Welcome to another episode of Category Visionaries — the show that explores GTM stories from tech's most innovative B2B founders. In today's episode, we're speaking with Manik Suri, CEO and Founder of GlacierGrid (formerly known as Therma°), a cooling intelligence platform that has raised over $30 Million in funding. Here are the most interesting points from our conversation: Manik's Transition to Tech Entrepreneurship: From his roots in law and public service, Manik was motivated to pursue technology as a means to effect social change more dynamically outside the confines of government, focusing on public benefits through innovation. The Inception of GlacierGrid: Recognizing the outdated methods in food industry temperature control, which led to significant resource wastage and operational inefficiencies, inspired the creation of GlacierGrid to modernize and optimize these systems. Innovative Technology for Efficiency: GlacierGrid introduces IoT sensors and data analytics into refrigeration and HVAC systems, enabling real-time monitoring and adjustments that enhance energy efficiency and reduce unnecessary waste. Overcoming Adoption Barriers: One of the key challenges GlacierGrid faces is convincing businesses to adopt new technology solutions amid numerous operational demands, despite the clear advantages of their system. Growth Strategy: The company employs a strategic mix of thought leadership, direct sales, and digital marketing efforts to educate potential customers about the transformative benefits of intelligent cooling solutions. The Power of Storytelling: Manik highlights the critical role that effective storytelling plays in both fundraising and marketing, considering it an essential skill that can be refined to inspire and mobilize change.
Ex-Internetstar anredo soll Anzeige wegen Betruges erstatten.

Explore becoming Superhuman here: https://superhumanrevenue.beehiiv.com/ KEY TAKEAWAYS Cooling equipment drives nearly 10% of global warming through energy use, food waste from spoilage, and the release of ultra-potent greenhouse gases. The problem is growing rapidly as developing countries adopt more cooling. Manik's start-up Therma uses sensors, data science, and controls to dynamically manage the operation of AC units to save businesses money while cutting emissions. After early struggles trying to digitize food safety logs for users, Manik realized he had to fully automate temperature monitoring instead of just moving paper forms to mobile devices. Adoption and growth took off. To thrive as an entrepreneur, Manik recommends believing you can shape the future through sheer persistence, maintaining a higher purpose beyond personal gain, and surrounding yourself with great people. AI promises big climate benefits by optimizing energy systems, predicting weather and usage patterns, monitoring illegal deforestation, improving recycling, and more. BEST MOMENTS "If food waste were a country, it would be like the fourth largest emitter." "You can actually create the future...If you stick with something and try and work on it, often good things happen." "Do it for some reason beyond yourself...It makes it worthwhile to wake up." In this podcast interview, we delve into the vibrant start-up ecosystem in India and explore the concept of funding winters. Join us as we discuss with Devansh, a seasoned entrepreneur and industry expert, to gain valuable insights into the Indian start-up landscape and understand the challenges and opportunities faced by start-ups during funding winters, with our host Anurag Manik Start-Up Ecosystem in India: A Thriving Landscape India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing start-up ecosystems in the world. The country boasts a vast pool of talented entrepreneurs, a dynamic market, and a supportive regulatory framework. Let's explore the key aspects of the Indian start-up ecosystem in detail. 1. The Rise of Start-ups in India India's start-up revolution began in the early 2000s, with the growth of technology and internet penetration. Since then, the start-up ecosystem has witnessed exponential growth, fueled by factors such as increased access to capital, a growing consumer market, and a favorable policy environment. 2. Government Initiatives and Policies The Indian government has played a crucial role in nurturing the start-up ecosystem. Initiatives like "Startup India" and "Digital India" have created a conducive environment for entrepreneurship, offering benefits such as tax exemptions, simplified regulations, and access to funding and mentorship programs. 3. Thriving Sectors in the Indian Start-up Ecosystem The Indian start-up landscape is diverse, with ventures spanning various sectors. Some of the key sectors experiencing significant growth include e-commerce, fintech, edtech, healthtech, agritech, and renewable energy. These sectors have witnessed substantial investments and disruptive innovations in recent years. 4. Evolving Funding Landscape Access to funding is a crucial aspect of any start-up ecosystem. India has witnessed a surge in venture capital and angel investments, empowering entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into reality. Several domestic and international venture capital firms, angel networks, and crowdfunding platforms actively support Indian start-ups. Understanding Funding Winters: Challenges and Strategies 5. What are Funding Winters? Funding winters refer to periods when there is a slowdown or reduction in the availability of funding for start-ups. It can occur due to various factors, such as economic downturns, market uncertainties, changes in investor sentiments, or overvaluation concerns. During these periods, start-ups may find it challenging to secure funding for their operations and growth. 6. Impact on Start-ups Funding winters can have a significant impact on start-ups, as they heavily rely on external funding to fuel their growth. The challenges faced by start-ups during funding winters include: Limited access to capital: Investors become cautious and selective about where they deploy their funds, making it difficult for start-ups to secure investments. Extended fundraising cycles: Start-ups may experience longer periods to raise funds, as investors become more cautious and conduct thorough due diligence. Valuation adjustments: During funding winters, investors often demand lower valuations, which can impact the equity stake and overall growth prospects of start-ups. Survival challenges: Lack of adequate funding can pose survival challenges for start-ups, as they need resources to sustain operations and scale their businesses. 7. Strategies for Start-ups during Funding Winters Despite the challenges, start-ups can navigate funding winters effectively by adopting certain strategies. Here are some approaches that entrepreneurs can consider: Bootstrapping: Start-ups can focus on generating revenue through lean operations and efficient cost management. Bootstrapping allows them to maintain control and sustain their businesses during funding winters. Building strong networks: Developing relationships with potential investors, mentors, industry experts, and fellow entrepreneurs can open doors to alternative funding sources We are a top 10 podcast in India and consistently rank in the top 50 in France, Germany, Tunisia, and Africa. Today on the podcast we hear from Manik Suri, Founder and CEO of Therma, a technology startup whose mission is to help protect our food, health and planet. Manik had storied careers as an investment banker working on Wall Street, then as a Harvard trained lawyer working on Capital hill and yet he pivoted from New York and DC to join the ranks of Silicon Valley founders in order to fight climate change. Manik founded Therma in 2019, to eliminate food waste, improve energy efficiency and reduce refrigerant emissions, three critical aspects of a net zero future. If these concepts sound foreign and unrelated to your daily life, fear not we get into them in detail, during the show. On the flipside, companies you've likely heard of companies that work with Therma to reduce their emissions. Namely, McDonalds, Starbucks, NOW Foods, 7-Eleven and Marriott Hotels. Manik's pivot from a trajectory destined for the met gala to the chewing on glass life as an entrepreneur is one example of many where individuals are making career altering decisions to help move the world closer to net zero emissions. Manik pulls back the curtain on the “why” behind his move and at the same time this episode puts a spotlight on an emission area that is significantly less well known, “cold chain emissions.” You can keep up with Manik on LinkedIn and Twitter, and you can follow Therma's newest Research and Impact at their website. Today's guest is Manik Suri, CEO and Founder of Therma. The cold chain is a massive part of modern society that doesn't get much attention. It stores a huge amount of goods, allowing us to keep food fresh, medicines effective, and current internet infrastructure. Yes, even data centers are part of the cold chain.Therma is turning commercial and industrial refrigeration systems into virtual power plants and helping to reduce emissions across three vectors: food waste, energy, and refrigerant gases. Manik took a lean startup approach to Therma with a thesis that he could monitor refrigeration to help companies avoid spoilage. That idea led him to uncover related customer problems such as controlling temperature, optimizing power consumption, and detecting potential equipment failures that could lead to leaks. Collectively these problems add up to nearly 10% of global emissions. As refrigeration and cooling spread across a warming world, this footprint is expected to grow. The story of unchecked cooling is one of the self-reinforcing negative feedback loops where warmer weather requires more cooling, which uses more power and leaks more refrigerant, causing warmer weather… on repeat. In this episode, Cody Simms chatted with Manik to hear the details of our collective refrigeration and cold chain problem, how his solution at Therma came to be, and what's next for this side of the cooling world. In this episode, we cover: [2:19] An overview of the cold chain[5:10] Regulations and rules from a temperature management standpoint[8:09] Major sources of waste and inefficiency in the cooling sector and cold chain[10:02] Role of refrigerant leaks during a machine's lifespan and end-of-life[14:49] An overview of the cold chain emissions footprint[18:07] Origins of Therma and the company's solution[23:12] Manik's journey and how he landed in refrigeration[27:36] Therma's hardware, software, and analytical platform[31:00] The company's subscription model and how it came to be during the pandemic[33:16] How Therma predicts manufacturing timeframes and balances risk[35:06] The company's early adopters at a national level and plans to scale[38:13] Job opportunitiesGet connected:Cody Simms Twitter / LinkedInManik Suri Twitter / LinkedInTherma Twitter / LinkedInMCJ Podcast / Collective*You can also reach us via email at info@mcjcollective.com, where we encourage you to share your feedback on episodes and suggestions for future topics or guests.Episode recorded on November 21, 2022.
