[REBROADCAST FROM FEBRUARY 8TH, 2022] The Berlin-based record label Habibi Funk creates curated albums of re-released or newly discovered tracks from all around the Arab world, from the 1950s to the 1980s. The albums feature Lebanese folk, Moroccan disco, Sudanese jazz, and much more. Co-founder and curator Jannis Stürtz joins us to discuss his process for finding these tracks, and we'll listen to some music. C'est à l'agence de photographes VU', au mois de septembre 2021, que je rencontre Denis Dailleux pour la première fois. Je viens d'y commencer un stage, la photographie est nouvelle pour moi. Et je ne le sais pas encore, mais je m'apprête à découvrir l'univers incroyablement tendre, subtil, atemporel, de ce photographe qui aime les gens et sublime les corps. Lors de nos rendez-vous de travail à l'agence VU', il me confie son histoire, ses voyages, ses doutes, et son rapport intime, quasi viscéral, à la photographie. Il parle longuement, doucement, digresse souvent, et moi j'écris. Une relation d'écoute et de bienveillance mutuelle se tisse progressivement. Pour ce podcast, c'est à peu près le même exercice, devenu assez naturel entre nous. Il me reçoit chez lui un soir de printemps, dans sa jolie maison de Pierrefitte-sur-Seine. C'est ainsi que j'ai découvert le travail de cette talentueuse photographe. Rendez-vous à Paris pour un entretien un peu plus court que d'habitude mais riche en contenu et en musique. L'habillage sonore est signé Habibi Funk, label de réédition basé à Berlin, dédié à la musique du monde arabe. Une petite voix timide mais affirmée, Myriam Boulos introduit son univers en nous décrivant une photo très simple mais touchante : une toute petite fleur jaune qui semble léviter à l'intérieur d'une main élégante, celle de sa grand-mère. There's nothing that'll kickstart your body quite like a funky slice of Algerian-born Amazigh music. The lead track from Habibi Funk's Majid Soula compilation is a real hip-shaker, and just the tonic for whatever ales you this week. Voici ce que septembre vous offre : George Harrison "My Sweet Lord" / Cd All Things Must Pass (Universal réédition 2021) All Thing Must Pass est le premier album de George Harrison à être sorti après la séparation des Beatles. Longtemps frustré de ne pas pouvoir proposer plus de chansons au sein des Beatles, dominé par le tandem Lennon/McCartney, George Harrison se rattrape avec un triple album qui sort le 30 novembre 1970. Produit par Phil Spector, Harrison s'entoure de ses amis Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Klaus Voormann, Billy Preston, ainsi que plusieurs des musiciens de Derek and the Dominos qui accompagnèrent Clapton sur l'album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. All Things Must Pass est aujourd'hui considéré comme le meilleur album solo de la carrière de Georges Harrison, avec des classiques comme My Sweet Lord, Wah-Wah, ou Isn't It A Pity 50 ans après, voici ce chef d'œuvre enfin réédité avec 43 demos et outtakes inédits, remixés par Paul Hicks auquel nous devons les dernières rééditions des albums de John Lennon (Imagine, Plastic Ono Band). Ces nouveaux mixes révèlent une profondeur sonore, une définition et une clarté à couper le souffle. Marc Melià ("Les Étoiles" Feat. Flavien Berger & PiJaMa / Cd Veus (Pan European Recording 2021) Originaire de l'île de Majorque, Marc Melià est un compositeur/producteur basé à Bruxelles depuis plus de 10 ans. Repéré aux côtés de Françoiz Breut, Lonely Drifter Karen ou Borja Flames, en 2017 il sort Music For Prophet, son premier album solo sur le label de Gaspar Claus Les Disques du Festival Permanent au sein de la sélection de Flavien Berger. Si pour ce premier album, Marc Melià avait exploré les possibilités offertes par un synthétiseur mythique, pour Veus, et à la manière d'une mue, il applique le processus de modification du son à sa propre voix jusqu'à se faire androïde. Un androïde qui parle toutefois d'amour et de rêveries, un automate sensible qui joue avec les canons de la musique pop. Assumant l'artifice, Marc Melià recherche la poésie et la beauté dans le transgénique pour trouver un univers dans lequel on peut surfer à travers des vagues d'accords profondément émouvants, entendre des voix sans limite de registre ou danser librement comme en apesanteur. Une partie du disque a été enregistrée au cœur d'"Une ferme dans les Vosges" appartenant à Rodolphe Burger (Bio Murailles Music). Joy Denalane "The Ride" / Cd Let Yourself Be Loved (℗ 2020 Lesedi Music / Joy Denalane) Chanteuse allemande neo-soul, Joy Denalane est héritière de Lauryn Hill et Jill Scott. Bonbon Vodou "Fonker" Feat. Danyel Waro et Piers Faccini Cd Cimetière Créole (Heavenly Sweetness 2021) voir le clip La promesse des délices du sucre et la crainte du piment occulte. Le contraste est prononcé, à l'image du Bonbon Vodou... Le Bonbon Vodou, c'est Oriane Lacaille et JereM, deux parfums qui se complètent pour n'en faire qu'un. Elle est issue d'une famille de musiciens Réunionnais, il est fils de… psychiatres Lacaniens. De la France au Canada, en passant par la Réunion, le duo a donné plus de 150 concerts en trois ans. Des histoires à deux voix, qui combinent, pétillent et explosent. Des poèmes, du sarcasme. Une nostalgie joyeuse et festive, à l'image du cimetière marin de la baie de Saint-Paul, île de La Réunion. Les carrés de terre couverts de fleurs multicolores y ont remplacé les stèles de pierre. Supposé sombre, le lieu fourmille de vie prête à renaître encore et toujours. Une façon de célébrer la fin comme un début, de rire dans la tristesse. Croqué jusqu'en son centre, c'est là que mène le Bonbon Vodou. Dans ce champ du repos éternel, point de départ de ce deuxième album. Sur place, c'est entouré de figures musicales de l'île que le duo s'est offert des subtilités gustatives du sega et du mayola. Les notes d'accordéon de René Lacaille, le père d'Oriane, la voix de Danyèl Waro. Mais aussi des percussions - le kayamb évidemment ! - et, dans la tradition locale, le souffle des orchestres en cuivres. Piers Faccini à la réalisation de plusieurs titres, c'est à Jean Lamoot (Noir Désir, Bashung Salif Keita…) qu'est revenu le travail décisif de l'enregistrement et du mix qui donne au Bonbon Vodou sa saveur définitive, sa douceur et son acidité. Dans ce Cimetière Créole, Bonbon Vodou invoque les divinités occultes, danse avec elles, voyage, célèbre la vie et le moment présent, gorgé du sucre qui adoucit les moments les plus amers. Car, même avec un pied dans la tombe, on peut danser de l'autre. Emily Loizeau "Celle qui vit vers le sud" Cd Icare (Les Éditions de la Dernière Pluie 2021) Emily Loizeau nous revient avec un disque écrit au cœur du confinement, enregistré en quarantaine en Angleterre avec le réalisateur et musicien John Parish (musicien et producteur de PJ Harvey). Emily nourrissait depuis longtemps l'envie de cette rencontre et d'un album dans son pays de moitié, jusqu'à ce que l'évidence opère. Elle est ici autrice, compositrice et interprète mais aussi productrice désormais de son travail. Obi "No One" Cd No One (2021 Horizon) voir le clip Onipa "Play It" Ft. JAZZIZ Travel is a new podcast series hosted by JAZZIZ online editor Matt Micucci that explores jazz and creative music in all four corners of the globe. In this series, you will hear conversations with artists and people talking about the significance of jazz as an art form, the influence of folk music traditions of different cultures and backgrounds, or simply sharing their thoughts and ideas. The first episode of the series features a conversation about Habibi Funk Records with its founder Jannis Stürtz. Habibi Funk is a Berlin-based record label dedicated to re-releasing and preserving music from the Arab-speaking world, often written during times of war or exile, and heard by few. This is music made by Arab artists blending local and regional music traditions with musical interests from outside the regions, playing with such styles and genres as funk, soul, rock and more, including jazz. Habibi Funk's latest release is Fine Anyways, which compiles recordings by Lebanese singer/songwriter Rogér Fakhr and, like the rest of the Habibi Funk catalog, will surely sound to many listeners as a revelation. He may not be a household name, but Rogér Fakhr is regarded as a genius mythical figure in Lebanese music. A talented sideman and guitarist that worked with many artists, including the the most famous singer in the Arab world Fairuz, Fahkr’s own work was recorded in the late 1970s at the height of the conflict in Beirut, which prevented his recordings from being circulated. Thanks to the label Habibi Funk, we can now enjoy Fakhr’s “Had to Come Back Wet.”

The Last Waltz, arguably the most iconic performance in the history of Rock 'n' Roll, recreated in all its glory by Mrs Henry. Forty one years later and Mrs Henry took to the stage at the Belly Up, Solana Beach, San Diego. Not alone, a plethora of friends were just about to join them. What happened next is likely an as epic and defining moment as the original. A task of immeasurable complexity, Mrs Henry pull it off with panache, soul and above all – passion. We play two tracks of the beautifully presented vinyl presentation in today's show, which will no doubt leave you craving more. Tobin's New Music Shot this week expands on Richard's idea of new music that really is old music. He shines a light a new/re-release from the king of Sudanese Jazz, Sharhabil Ahmed. It is a riot of noise and a great introduction to Habibi Funk. Sticking with jazz in this week's show, Tobin also brings in a track from Chip Wickham. It's an odd and somewhat inappropriate title. Finishing off today's show is another live track pulled from The Last Waltz LP. This time featuring the quite beautiful and jealousy enduringly talented Tina White and Brittany Wallace.

A l’heure du confinement, l’émission Néo Géo continue d’envoyer du son et vous faire voyager en musique Au programme, plusieurs mixes du monde entier et un live d’un artiste venu tout droit du Portugal !WORLDMIX BRESILConcocté par le mystérieux projet « Bom Dia », ce mix offre des vibrations 100% Brésil, où les artistes revendiquent, résistent et nous font danser. Il gruppo Attarazat Addahabia si forma nel '68, con ben 14 elementi, fra cui diverse voci femminili, tutti della stessa famiglia: la formazione mette insieme musica marocchina, e in particolare gnaoua, e influenze che vengono dal pop internazionale e dalla black music, in un amalgama molto moderno ed esuberante. Attarazat Addahabia ha poi cessato definitivamente la propria attività alla metà degli anni novanta. Ma in Libano scoppia la guerra civile, e Issam, che milita nella sinistra, si sente nel mirino e riesce a raggiungere Parigi, dove rimane per un anno. Nella capitale francese Hajali stenta a mettere insieme il pranzo con la cena, ma prima di tornare a Beirut nel '77 riesce a organizzare una piccola seduta di incisione: a Parigi, vuoi per la lontananza dal suo paese, vuoi per la tragedia della guerra civile che il Libano stava attraversando, Hajali sente il richiamo per la musica araba, e crea un pop-folk mediorientale che va già nella direzione di Ferat Al Ard, il gruppo con cui Hajali farà poi epoca in Libano. Mai uscito, circolato solo in copie artigianali, l'album è un gioiello che adesso vede la luce con Habibi Funk, etichetta tedesca specializzata nel vintage arabo.

Programa del dimecres 22 de maig. Començam en primer lloc amb la música de Los Rebeldes, ja que visiten Palma per celebrar els 40 anys sobre els escenaris. De tot això parlem amb el seu líder, Carlos Segarra. També entrevistem Maria Teresa Ferrer, presidenta de l’Obra Cultural Balear de Formentera, per la XI Trobada de Poetes que celebren aquest diumenge a Formentera. I finalitzam amb la secció ‘Música per passatgers freqüents’ de David Ventura, aquesta semana dedicat al Habibi Funk.
Deuxième volet du diptyque consacré aux musiques des pays arabes, cette fois autour de ses aspects électroniques avec Amine Metani du collectif Arabstazy et Vish Mhatre du label Dar Disku. Musicien connu sous le nom de Mettani, nous avons rencontré Amine avant son concert au FGO barbara du 11 avril. Sur scène avec son gembri électrique, il explore la tradition tunisienne du Stambeli armé de machines électroniques et de pédales. Nous vous diffusons une partie de son live et une discussion autour de la relation entre transe traditionelle et techno, des actus de son collectif et label Arabstasy ou encore de sa passion pour FIP radio. En deuxième partie, nous recevons le DJ et batteur Vish Mhatre, fondateur du label Dar Disku établi récement à Bristol. Après s'être intéressé aux musiques électroniques européennes, Vish a eu envie d'explorer le patrimoine du pays où il a grandit, le Barhein, et surtout de faire danser sur de nouvelles musiques. Avec un EP taillé pour le club qui a reçu les louanges du sacro-saint Resident Advisor et déjà plusieurs dates aux cotés d'Awesome Tapes From Africa ou encore Habibi Funk, son label est bien parti pour faire danser encore quelques temps. In this episode Hind Mezaina interviews Jannis Stürtz, co-founder of Jakarta Records and Habibi Funk record labels (based in Berlin). Habibi Funk focuses on re-releasing old music from the Arab world, with a particular focus on funk, jazz and obscure music from the 1970s and 80s. Music, photos, text and album covers from Habibi Funk are showcased at an exhibition titled "Habibi Funk: A spotlight on Arab Grooves" exhibition at East Wing Gallery in Dubai.
