Minter Dialogue with Paul Assaiante (re-release of episode 554) "Coach" Paul Assaiante is one of the greatest coaches in the history of intercollegiate athletics. He's labelled as the “winningest coach in college sports history,” sporting a 252-match winning streak over 13 years, a 507-29 all-time record, and winning 17 NCAA Championship titles as head coach at Trinity College. Paul systematically brought together great players from around the world and demonstrated how teammates from diverse cultures can unite to build a winning culture and team. And his experience is also enriched by having coached the US National Team in squash (17 years) as well as World Team Tennis with Billie Jean King. To add to his list of accomplishments, he's also co-author with James Zug of the book, "Run to the Roar, Coaching to Overcome Fear," (published by Penguin) and the subject of a 2013 documentary film, All In, by Marc DiBenedetto. In this conversation, we discuss his philosophy of coaching, how he's been guided by his personal purpose, the best ways to train, motivate and guide a team of individual athletes to bring out their best. We also look at the role of empathy in coaching, how to learn, improve and perform under stress, and the way to get the best out of everyone. He also addresses some of the challenges of coaching in today's environment, with the perils of social media, helicopter parenting and coming to grips with one's emotions. When Paul Assaiante announced his retirement from coaching the men's squash team at Trinity College in Connecticut earlier this year, it marked the end to the most successful run for any coach in the history of college athletics. During his tenure, Assaiante guided Trinity to 17 national titles, including 13 consecutive championships and 252 wins in a row from 1999 to 2011. Leading Trinity to 17 national titles which included 13 on the trot during "the streak", Paul Assaiante is without question one of the greatest coaches in US Collegiate sports history. Shortly following the end of this season which saw his Trinity Bantams surprise many by reaching the Potter Cup final, Paul announced that he would be stepping down as head coach after 30 glorious years at the helm. This chat covers it all, and it truly captures what makes Coach Assaiante an absolute national treasure for US Squash. Please check out our sponsor www.opensquash.org for more details on the great summer coaching camp offers.
Coach Paul Assaiante is the winningest coach in college sports history. For 30 years until announcing his retirement at the end of this season, Coach led the Trinity College squash program to 17 national championships and 20 finals appearances in the last 25 years, including at one point winning 252 straight matches and 13 straight national titles. In his final season, Trinity's squash team entered the national championships with the #6 seed and rode an almost fairy tale bookend to Coach's career to the finals and within a single point of an 18th national title. Paul also coached the USA National Team in squash for 17 years, Trinity's men's tennis squad for 24 years, and World Team Tennis with Billie Jean King in its heyday. In 2010, he authored Run to the Roar: Coaching to Overcome Fear, one of my favorite books on sports and leadership. Perhaps what is most fascinating about the soft-spoken Coach is he knew nothing about squash when he got his first coaching job. His true expertise is in managing, motivating, and inspiring a diverse group of players to be the best version of themselves. Our conversation covers Coach Paul's path and a career's worth of wisdom about preparation, emotional regulation, managing high performing individuals on a team, diversity, facing fear, learning to win and lose, and applying the lessons to the business world and next generation. Welcome back, squash fans! This week we have Manek Mathur on the podcast. Most well known for being ranked the #1 doubles player on the SDA Tour, four-time College Squash National Team Champion, DJ and music producer and his new career path in the world of real estate. The episode starts with Manek's experience playing at Trinity and the relationships he formed with his coach (Paul Assaiante) and fellow teammates. Originally from India, the transition to being an international student at Trinity was welcoming, in large part to the squash family community built over the years. This was huge for Manek and a common theme throughout the episode. He shares what competition was like among teammates, including tension, but how they moved past it to thrive and create lifelong friendships. There's a shift in the conversation when Conor asks about a former teammate (Shaun Johnstone) and how they all handled the news of him being diagnosed with Cancer. Manek shares how the community dealt with it and what can be learned from it. The episode continues with Conor asking about Manek's experience moving from singles to doubles, and eventually being ranked #1. Manek talks about the transition and how he took pointers and tips from other players along the way. Manek then discusses his time at the Racquet and Tennis club, and how much he enjoyed his time and his community there, along with the changes he made to improve the club. The conversation shifts to the topic of Manek's passion for creating music, more specifically, as a DJ/Creator. He brings up how music used to help him before playing matches, and has since become a lifelong passion. Conor and Manek talk about the “flow state” and how that's a common theme in both Manek's music making and squash game. He gives advice on how to be productive in one's craft, but not let it take up too much time. The episode begins to draw to a close when Manek talks about his fairly recent career change into real estate. He's currently working in Brooklyn, NY, and loving his new job. Of course, the episode finishes with the classic “quick fire” section, where Conor asks questions about Manek's interests and passions beyond the squash world. Tune in for an episode filled with topics about community, creativity, finding one's passions, and how it all intertwines!
