Paul Rowley, an acclaimed filmmaker, visual artist, writer, director, editor, cinematographer, producer, and co-founder of Still Films, hails from Dublin, Ireland, and currently resides in Brooklyn.  Delving into filmmaking in 1995, Rowley has crafted an impressive repertoire encompassing over 40 shorts, features, documentaries, video installations, and experimental films. Recognized as the Irish Film NY Rising Star and a two-time IFTA nominee for his documentary works, Rowley has garnered accolades from the Irish Arts Council, including the Glen Dimplex award from the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Irish American Art Award. He is a distinguished member of the Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective.  In 2007, Rowley co-established Dublin's renowned production house, STILL FILMS, where he serves as co-director. The company's debut feature documentary, "SEAVIEW," debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in 2008, followed by the co-directed venture "Build Something Modern" in 2010 with Nicky Gogan.   Since then, Still Films has continuously impressed audiences across prestigious platforms like Sundance, SXSW, New York Film Festival, Hot Docs, Pompidou Centre Paris, among others. His recent acclaimed work, "THE RED TREE," sheds light on the clandestine history of Italian gay deportees under Mussolini's Fascist rule in the 1930s, notably showcased at CCI's Addressing the Nations early in 2021. "THIS ONE'S FOR THE LADIES," a project Rowley shot and produced in collaboration with director Gene Graham, premiered at SXSW 2018, clinching a special jury award and securing distribution by NEON.  Paul Rowley's dedication to merging art with activism is evident in his role as the video director for Gays Against Guns in New York City, a feature documentary focusing on the movement battling the gun violence epidemic in the United States, particularly impacting LGBTQ+ individuals and marginalized communities. With a rich tapestry of awards and accolades adorning his career, Paul Rowley stands as a visionary storyteller committed to reshaping narratives through the fusion of art and activism.

It's San Francisco, how hard can it be to meet cool people? Well, if the only people you run into is the cast of the HBO series and movie, Looking, you might have some work to do! This week we tackle the controversial and short-lived HBO series and subsequent moviefilm, Looking, created by writer-director Andrew Haigh. The series followed a group of gay men in San Francisco and their travails in life and love- Patrick (Jonathan Groff), our anxious protagonist with deeeeeeeep mommy issues; Augustin (Frankie J. Alvarez), the tortured "artist" looking for meaning in his work and finding drugs along the way; and Dom (Murray Bartlett), a peri peri chicken lover having a mid-life crisis. Over the course of the series, which only ran for 18 episodes from 2014-2015, we follow this crew and a great cast of supporting actors, including but not limited to Lauren Weedman, Scott Bakula, and sexpot Raul Castillo, as they look for meaning in their lives, with plenty of cringe, Grindr dates, and drunken dancing along the way. The series unfortunately had a short run, but was brought back for one final installment in 2016 with Looking: The Movie. Join Jake and Kevin this week as we talk about the highs of lows of the series and how successful the movie holds up as a final episode. Why did they not cast any gay or queer Asian characters in a show set in San Francisco? Why are the three protagonists so insufferable in the first season? Did Richie and Patrick really get back together in the movie? This and more on this week's episode! PLUS: We dive back to our regularly-scheduled mini-series programming this week! The Criterion Channel (who does not yet sponsor this podcast but we're open to the idea) has a fantastic selection of queer filmmaking, bolstered recently by a collection of queer short films. For the next few episodes, we'll be watching some of these shorts, beginning with the film The Red Tree, directed by Paul Rowley in 2018. This pseudo-documentary short follows a fictional gay man who travels back to the island where Mussolini interred hundreds of gay man in his rise to power in the 1930s.

Synopsis Dealing with the death of loved ones is never easy, but sometimes music can help – especially if music plays a role in the lives of both the departed and survivors. And some survivors find both meaning and consolation in commissioning a work of new music to honor the memory of those they have lost.On today's date in 2007, the Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia gave the premiere of such a memorial work, entitled Love Abide. The work was commissioned by Paul Rowley, who for years had driven his wife Miriam to weekly Choral Society of Philadelphia rehearsals, where she sang alto, always, said her husband, “beaming with excitement.”  After her sudden death in 2003, Rowley asked the society's artistic director to choose a composer to write a tribute to his wife. Rowley had a text in mind for the lyrics and wanted an alto solo and a female composer. The commission went to the British composer Roxanna Panufnik and the selected text was the 13th chapter of 1 Corinthians, which includes the lines: “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all thinks, endures all things …  faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” Music Played in Today's Program Roxanna Panufnik (b. 1968) – Love Abide (London Oratory School Choir; London Mozart Players; Lee Ward, cond.) Former Great Britain captain and head coach Brian Noble and ex-England hooker and current Salford Red Devils head coach Paul Rowley join Dave Woods to reflect on what was a fantastic Magic Weekend in Newcastle. Plus, they discuss the unearthing of talent in the Championship, debate whether expansion clubs, like Toulouse, should be exempt from relegation and also look ahead to the start of the World Cup when England will face Samoa at St James' Park. TIMECODES: 03:00 The individual performances at Magic Weekend of Joe Batchelor, Bevan French and Jack Welsby are highlighted. 05:20 The discussion turns to the development and talent-spotting of players, like Batchelor, who started out in the Championship. 10:00 Toulouse's victory over Wakefield leaves them two points behind Trinity at the bottom of the table. So which team will survive? 16:00 Does Super League need a second French team or a second expansion team and should they be exempt from relegation? 20:50 Paul asks what is the objective of having expansion clubs and whether TV viewers more important than fans coming through the turnstiles? 25:50 Brian says you have to earn the right to be in Super League, but perhaps there's more reasons than just promotion to judge that on. 31:30 The World Cup is three months away and Paul remembers representing England at the 2000 World Cup. 34:40 Brian captained Great Britain in Australia in 1984 and reminisces about being unable to remember the names of his teammates as he introduced them to the Australian PM! 37:30 Paul discusses England chances and Brian warns of the importance of that first game in Newcastle against Samoa.

We're joined by Irish filmmaker Paul Rowley in New York, who has been documenting the protest and creative activist group Gays Against Guns, in the wake of more horrific mass-shootings in the US. Plus, the ABP tea keeps spilling, the country is in a weird blend of 2007+2010 energy, and it's festival season and we're getting ready to rave.
