Gospel  Luke 8:19-21 The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and they wish to see you." He said to them in reply, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it." Reflection There are two passages in Scripture that make this particular passage make sense. They both state that the family of Jesus thought he was crazy. The words they use is he was outside of himself. And so it's clear that Jesus is saying here that his work is not to be arguing with people about whether or not he is who he says he is. He's looking for people wide open to the most amazing signs and wonders that he's performing. They are his calling card. They are what makes him so unique. And those in his family, worried probably about their reputation, just was very closed to who he really was. Closing Prayer Father, bless us with an awareness of how easy it is for us to write off this marvelous plan that you have for each of us. It's mysterious, it's miraculous and powerful. So focus us always on what Jesus came to teach. His power flowing through us, doing wonders. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Friends of the Rosary,Today, September 23, the Catholic Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Pius of Pietrelcina (1887-1968), known as Padre Pio, a saint of the last century.Born Francesco, to poor farm workers in the small village of Pietrelcina, Italy, he joined the Capuchin Friars at the age of sixteen and was ordained a priest at the age of 22.For fifty years, at the monastery of San Giovanni Rotundo, he was a highly sought-after spiritual advisor, confessor, and intercessor, whose life was devoted to the Eucharist and prayer. While praying before a cross on September 20, 1918, Padre Pio received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ. He was the first priest ever to be so blessed. His fame spread widely, and with this came suspicion, false accusations, and repeated investigation by the Holy Office. He was reportedly able to bi-locate, levitate, read the consciences, and heal by touch.Yet despite his notoriety, he would often say, "I only want to be a poor friar who prays."Today, there are over 400,000 members worldwide in prayer groups begun by Padre Pio in the 1920s.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! BASTA BUGIE - Cristianesimo

BASTA BUGIE - Cristianesimo

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 10, 2025 18:32

Il can.

11/6/24 - Domenico da Cese was a priest and Cappuchin friar. He showed signs of a special gift from a young age, correctly predicting an impending earthquake on the day of its occurrence at the age of nine. After becoming a priest in October of 1931, he would eventually travel to San Giovanni and become a close friend of Pio of Pietrelcina, known popularly as Padre Pio. Some years later, he would have his first contact with the Shroud of the Holy Face of Manoppello, eventually committing to sharing the devotion of that Holy Face with as many people as possible.

In his new book, The Stigmatists: Their Gifts, Their Revelations, Their Warnings, Paul Kengor gives a historical overview of the phenomenon of the stigmata, focusing especially on one thing many stigmatists have in common: they receive visions, often prophetic ones. The book devotes individual chapters to seven canonized or beatified stigmatists: St. Francis of Assisi, St. Catherine of Siena, Bl. Anne Catherine Emmerich, St. Pius of Pietrelcina, St. Faustina, Bl. Elena Aiello, and St. Gemma Galgani. Kengor joins the podcast to discuss the skepticism and attacks many stigmatists (such as Padre Pio) faced from within the Church, the prophecies of Bl. Elena Aiello about Mussolini's fate, whether St. Francis was the first stigmatist in history, and what we ordinary Catholics can learn from the visions and experiences of the stigmatists.  Links Paul Kengor, The Stigmatists: Their Gifts, Their Revelations, Their Warnings https://tanbooks.com/products/books/the-stigmatists-their-gifts-their-revelations-their-warnings/ DONATE to make this show possible! http://catholicculture.org/donate/audio SIGN UP for Catholic Culture's newsletter: https://www.catholicculture.org/newsletters

Gospel Luke 8:16-18 Jesus said to the crowd: “No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away.” Reflection There are many ways to understand the light. It was the first thing that God created. It is an image of the Spirit of God enlightening our eyes, seeing everything around us as it was meant to be seen. I believe this passage is talking to us about the truth that is consistently being revealed to us, generation after generation. And the more that we see it, the more it is spread between us. So he's saying, be sure and pay attention to what you hear and know that the truth is what has come into the world. Closing Prayer Father, your promise is that you will be our teacher. You taught us that you live with God inside of you and that's who we are, also. Bless us with this awareness, this truth that dwells in our hearts that longs to show us more and more of what is real, what is true. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest Lectionary: 449The Saint of the day is Saint Pio of PietrelcinaSaint Pio of Pietrelcina's Story In one of the largest such ceremonies in history, Pope John Paul II canonized Padre Pio of Pietrelcina on June 16, 2002. It was the 45th canonization ceremony in Pope John Paul's pontificate. More than 300,000 people braved blistering heat as they filled St. Peter's Square and nearby streets. They heard the Holy Father praise the new saint for his prayer and charity. “This is the most concrete synthesis of Padre Pio's teaching,” said the pope. He also stressed Padre Pio's witness to the power of suffering. If accepted with love, the Holy Father stressed, such suffering can lead to “a privileged path of sanctity.” Many people have turned to the Italian Capuchin Franciscan to intercede with God on their behalf; among them was the future Pope John Paul II. In 1962, when he was still an archbishop in Poland, he wrote to Padre Pio and asked him to pray for a Polish woman with throat cancer. Within two weeks, she had been cured of her life-threatening disease. Born Francesco Forgione, Padre Pio grew up in a family of farmers in southern Italy. Twice his father worked in Jamaica, New York, to provide the family income. At the age of 15, Francesco joined the Capuchins and took the name of Pio. He was ordained in 1910 and was drafted during World War I. After he was discovered to have tuberculosis, he was discharged. In 1917, he was assigned to the friary in San Giovanni Rotondo, 75 miles from the city of Bari on the Adriatic. On September 20, 1918, as he was making his thanksgiving after Mass, Padre Pio had a vision of Jesus. When the vision ended, he had the stigmata in his hands, feet, and side. Life became more complicated after that. Medical doctors, Church authorities, and curiosity seekers came to see Padre Pio. In 1924, and again in 1931, the authenticity of the stigmata was questioned; Padre Pio was not permitted to celebrate Mass publicly or to hear confessions. He did not complain of these decisions, which were soon reversed. However, he wrote no letters after 1924. His only other writing, a pamphlet on the agony of Jesus, was done before 1924. Padre Pio rarely left the friary after he received the stigmata, but busloads of people soon began coming to see him. Each morning after a 5 a.m. Mass in a crowded church, he heard confessions until noon. He took a mid-morning break to bless the sick and all who came to see him. Every afternoon he also heard confessions. In time his confessional ministry would take 10 hours a day; penitents had to take a number so that the situation could be handled. Many of them have said that Padre Pio knew details of their lives that they had never mentioned. Padre Pio saw Jesus in all the sick and suffering. At his urging, a fine hospital was built on nearby Mount Gargano. The idea arose in 1940; a committee began to collect money. Ground was broken in 1946. Building the hospital was a technical wonder because of the difficulty of getting water there and of hauling up the building supplies. This “House for the Alleviation of Suffering” has 350 beds. A number of people have reported cures they believe were received through the intercession of Padre Pio. Those who assisted at his Masses came away edified; several curiosity seekers were deeply moved. Like Saint Francis, Padre Pio sometimes had his habit torn or cut by souvenir hunters. One of Padre Pio's sufferings was that unscrupulous people several times circulated prophecies that they claimed originated from him. He never made prophecies about world events and never gave an opinion on matters that he felt belonged to Church authorities to decide. He died on September 23, 1968, and was beatified in 1999. Reflection Referring to that day’s Gospel (Matthew 11:25-30) at Padre Pio's canonization Mass in 2002, Saint John Paul II said: “The Gospel image of ‘yoke' evokes the many trials that the humble Capuchin of San Giovanni Rotondo endured. Today we contemplate in him how sweet is the ‘yoke' of Christ and indeed how light the burdens are whenever someone carries these with faithful love. The life and mission of Padre Pio testify that difficulties and sorrows, if accepted with love, transform themselves into a privileged journey of holiness, which opens the person toward a greater good, known only to the Lord.” Learn more about Padre Pio! Friends of the Rosary, Today is the Memorial of St. Pius of Pietrelcina (1887-1968), or Padre Pio, a contemporary saint with the gift of the stigmata who bore the wounds of our Lord. Padre Pio, known for his suffering, humility, and miracles, received the stigmata while praying before a cross on September 20, 1918. He is the first priest to be so blessed. For fifty years at the monastery of San Giovanni Rotundo, the Italian Capuchin friar was a much sought-after spiritual advisor, confessor, and intercessor whose life was devoted to the Eucharist and prayer. Yet despite such notoriety, he often said, “I only want to be a poor friar who prays.” Padre Pio could read the souls and consciences of those who confessed with him. He could also bi-locate, levitate, and heal by touch. In 1956, he founded the House for the Relief of Suffering, a hospital that serves 60,000 a year. Today, there are over 400,000 members worldwide in prayer groups that Padre Pio began in the 1920s. He was a man of prayer and suffering.
