Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest Lectionary: 449The Saint of the day is Saint Pio of PietrelcinaSaint Pio of Pietrelcina's Story In one of the largest such ceremonies in history, Pope John Paul II canonized Padre Pio of Pietrelcina on June 16, 2002. It was the 45th canonization ceremony in Pope John Paul's pontificate. More than 300,000 people braved blistering heat as they filled St. Peter's Square and nearby streets. They heard the Holy Father praise the new saint for his prayer and charity. “This is the most concrete synthesis of Padre Pio's teaching,” said the pope. He also stressed Padre Pio's witness to the power of suffering. If accepted with love, the Holy Father stressed, such suffering can lead to “a privileged path of sanctity.” Many people have turned to the Italian Capuchin Franciscan to intercede with God on their behalf; among them was the future Pope John Paul II. In 1962, when he was still an archbishop in Poland, he wrote to Padre Pio and asked him to pray for a Polish woman with throat cancer. Within two weeks, she had been cured of her life-threatening disease. Born Francesco Forgione, Padre Pio grew up in a family of farmers in southern Italy. Twice his father worked in Jamaica, New York, to provide the family income. At the age of 15, Francesco joined the Capuchins and took the name of Pio. He was ordained in 1910 and was drafted during World War I. After he was discovered to have tuberculosis, he was discharged. In 1917, he was assigned to the friary in San Giovanni Rotondo, 75 miles from the city of Bari on the Adriatic. On September 20, 1918, as he was making his thanksgiving after Mass, Padre Pio had a vision of Jesus. When the vision ended, he had the stigmata in his hands, feet, and side. Life became more complicated after that. Medical doctors, Church authorities, and curiosity seekers came to see Padre Pio. In 1924, and again in 1931, the authenticity of the stigmata was questioned; Padre Pio was not permitted to celebrate Mass publicly or to hear confessions. He did not complain of these decisions, which were soon reversed. However, he wrote no letters after 1924. His only other writing, a pamphlet on the agony of Jesus, was done before 1924. Padre Pio rarely left the friary after he received the stigmata, but busloads of people soon began coming to see him. Each morning after a 5 a.m. Mass in a crowded church, he heard confessions until noon. He took a mid-morning break to bless the sick and all who came to see him. Every afternoon he also heard confessions. In time his confessional ministry would take 10 hours a day; penitents had to take a number so that the situation could be handled. Many of them have said that Padre Pio knew details of their lives that they had never mentioned. Padre Pio saw Jesus in all the sick and suffering. At his urging, a fine hospital was built on nearby Mount Gargano. The idea arose in 1940; a committee began to collect money. Ground was broken in 1946. Building the hospital was a technical wonder because of the difficulty of getting water there and of hauling up the building supplies. This “House for the Alleviation of Suffering” has 350 beds. A number of people have reported cures they believe were received through the intercession of Padre Pio. Those who assisted at his Masses came away edified; several curiosity seekers were deeply moved. Like Saint Francis, Padre Pio sometimes had his habit torn or cut by souvenir hunters. One of Padre Pio's sufferings was that unscrupulous people several times circulated prophecies that they claimed originated from him. He never made prophecies about world events and never gave an opinion on matters that he felt belonged to Church authorities to decide. He died on September 23, 1968, and was beatified in 1999. Reflection Referring to that day’s Gospel (Matthew 11:25-30) at Padre Pio's canonization Mass in 2002, Saint John Paul II said: “The Gospel image of ‘yoke' evokes the many trials that the humble Capuchin of San Giovanni Rotondo endured. Today we contemplate in him how sweet is the ‘yoke' of Christ and indeed how light the burdens are whenever someone carries these with faithful love. The life and mission of Padre Pio testify that difficulties and sorrows, if accepted with love, transform themselves into a privileged journey of holiness, which opens the person toward a greater good, known only to the Lord.” Learn more about Padre Pio!
Perciò tutti i diritti passerebbero immediatamente a mio nipote Amedeo, Duca d'Aosta».

Broken-down buses, long lines, fractious tourists, strikes—and countless encounters with God's immense providence. These are just some of the memorable experiences recounted by Irish tour guide Kieran Troy in his new book, “In the Stars the Glory of His Eyes,” which takes the reader to some of the most evocative Catholic pilgrimage sites: Vatican City, the Holy House of Nazareth in Loreto, the shrine of Padre Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo, the Abbey of Montecassino, and many more. In this episode, Troy speaks with Ignatius Press editor Thomas Jacobi about the book, and about the inspiring, exhausting, and often comical experiences he's had over decades of leading groups of pilgrims to many of Christendom's most beloved places. With wit and charm, Troy gives a first-hand account of Christ at work in all the beautiful messiness of pilgrimage. Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest Lectionary: 453All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is Saint Pio of PietrelcinaIn one of the largest such ceremonies in history, Pope John Paul II canonized Padre Pio of Pietrelcina on June 16, 2002. Reflection Referring to that day's Gospel (Matthew 11:25-30) at Padre Pio's canonization Mass in 2002, Saint John Paul II said: “The Gospel image of ‘yoke' evokes the many trials that the humble Capuchin of San Giovanni Rotondo endured. September 23: Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio), Priest1887–1968Memorial; Liturgical Color: WhitePatron Saint of civil defense volunteers and adolescentsA humble friar's love for Christ burns holes in his handsLong-married spouses often develop similar patterns of speech. A boy might learn to walk just like his father, and a girl might favor the same hairstyle as her mom. Teenagers in the same cliques dress alike and cut their hair in a similar fashion. It is natural to adopt the traits of the one you love, to mimic their behavior, dress, speech, and habits, consciously or unconsciously. Lover and beloved converge, master and disciple unite, leader and follower bond. Today's saint did not have a reference group apart from Christ Himself. Jesus Christ inhabited every corner of the mind, soul, and imagination of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. Pio's life fused with Christ's so totally that Pio's very body bore the marks of his beloved. Not the same haircut, clothes, or gait, but the same nail marks and bloody wounds. Father Pio merged with Christ such that to look upon the friar's hands was to see the crucified palms of the Son of God on Calvary.Padre Pio grew up dirt poor and uneducated in a village near Naples, Italy, in 1887. Neither his parents nor his grandparents could read or write. He was baptized as Francesco and helped on the family's small plot of land as a boy. The family was deeply religious, in the good, medieval way that perdured in rural Southern Europe far longer than it did in Northern lands. Saints, feast days, devotions, processions, fasts, the Mass, angels, saints, the Virgin, and God were the stuff of life. They saturated the atmosphere of Pietrelcina. Little Francesco and his family breathed Catholic air. It entered their bloodstream, circulated in their veins, and oozed out of every corpuscle. When he was about ten years old, Francesco decided to dedicate his life to God as a Franciscan friar. After completing some schooling and being privately tutored, he entered a nearby Franciscan friary at age fifteen. He took the name Pio (Pius) after a saint honored in his hometown. He was ordained a priest in 1910.Padre Pio lived virtually his entire priestly life at a modest Franciscan friary in the rural town of San Giovanni Rotondo. Beginning in 1918, he began to experience the stigmata, or marks of the sufferings of Christ. He bled where Christ bled. Holes perforated his hands. He had sharp pains in his side. He also began to display supernatural gifts: bilocation, prophecy, miracles, and healings. His personal routine of prayer and mortification was also stupefying. He did not want his private passion play to go on tour, but it did. He became famous throughout Italy for being holy. Then he became widely known the world over. By the time of his death in 1968, Padre Pio was a bona fide Catholic superstar.Padre Pio had mystique. That mystique was not rooted in good looks, a chateau on the Côte d'Azur, or in movie stardom, but in how he said Mass. People flocked to witness Padre Pio say long, intense, devotional Masses. In the modern world, sin has mystique. It's cool, retrograde, impulsive, and “edgy.” A life of sin and vice is seen as more authentic than a life of goodness and virtue, because the sinner supposedly does not hide his real self behind a social curtain. Padre Pio hid nothing. He was totally authentic, totally sincere, and totally holy. His life was a rebuke of sin. He did not pretend to “share” others' burdens by joining them in sin. He entered into the real drama of life by embodying Christ. A true Christian is authentic when he separates himself and his friends from sin, when he creates the mystique of Christ around him, and when, like Christ, he draws all men to himself.Saint Pio, your intense love of God was communicated to the faithful in your celebration of Mass, your wise counsel in the confessional, and in your mystical experiences. What was so manifest in you was rare but lies latent in every priest. Help every priest to be an icon of Christ.

ST. PADRE PIO OF PIETRELCINA I PATRON SAINT OF CIVIL DEFENSE WORKER AND ADOLESCENTS FEAST DAY : SEPTEMBER 23 Perhaps you have heard of the word “Stigmata”? They are wounds or bodily marks that correspond to the wounds of the Crucified Jesus, given usually to saints who enjoyed very high union with Jesus Christ. In the history of the Church, there are only five saints who were gifted with the stigmata. Well, today, we will speak of the life of a famous stigmatist - St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina. Padre Pio, whose real name was Francesco Forgione, was born in Pietrelcina, Italy on September 25, 1887. At age five, he became an altar boy. When he was 15, he entered the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. To finance his studies, his father worked in the United States. Pio had a fragile health. At 17 he fell ill and suffered from insomnia, fainting spells, migraines, vomiting, and loss of appetite. When he recovered, he was drafted into the army but due to fragile health, he was discharged. He continued his religious formation and was allowed to profess the vows in 1907. On august 10, 1910 he was ordained a priest. The stigmata appeared for the first time in 1910, but it disappeared. Padre Pio was transferred to the Capuchin convent at San Giovanni Rotondo in 1916. In 1918 after celebrating Mass, the wounds reappeared and it stayed permanently until his death. Padre Pio revealed that his wounds made him suffer as if he was dying on the cross. He walked dragging his feet, his hands ached, but he continued to serve the people. Jesus pierced him also on his side. But he tried to bear them with dignity. He asked Jesus to make the wounds invisible because they caused him much humiliation and embarrassment. The wounds were examined medically, but they could not be healed. In effect, Padre Pio was judged and accused of being a fraud, that he was faking the wounds and putting medicine to maintain them. He was also accused of other misconducts. He was banned by his superiors from saying Mass publicly, from hearing Confession, and from preaching. Besides, the devil was also pestering him by beating him bodily. In the mid 1960's Pope Paul VI lifted the bans imposed on Padre Pio and dismissed all accusations against him. People who believed in the sanctity of Padre Pio attested to his spiritual gifts of visions, healing, conversion, prophecy, reading souls, speaking tongues, long fasting, bilocation and levitation. And his wounds exuded a sweet smell. He became popular and many took him as spiritual director and confessor. Because of his desire to help the sick, a small clinic for the poor was opened in 1925 at San Giovanni Rotondo. It was called “Home for the Relief of Suffering.” Big donations started to come and a bigger hospital was built. It was inaugurated on May 5, 1956. Padre Pio was given the task of managing the hospital and since it involved handling money, the Pope dispensed him from the vow of poverty. Padre lived a very busy life making himself available for the people who needed him for spiritual guidance. He spent hours administering the Sacraments and many hours hearing confession. After celebrating Holy Mass on September 23, 1968, Padre Pio died at the age of 81. Miraculously, his wounds disappeared. He was buried in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie at San Giovanni Rotondo. On June 16, 2002, thirty-four years after his death, he was canonized by St. Pope John Paul II.“St. Padre Pio, help us to learn how to suffer the many trials and difficulties of life.” Am I easily discouraged by difficulties or do I ask God's help to carry on?
Ortrud and Dr. Germain Bianchi have an extraordinary story of being joined together by the famous Italian stigmatist priest, Saint Padre Pio! Ortrud joins me on The Dignity of Women to tell how she came to find her Catholic faith, befriend the saint who would change her life forever, and ultimately how that saint would lead her to her future husband. Ortrud Bianchi Ortrud Bianchi was born in 1945 in Ronsperg, Czech Republic as the youngest of six children. Her family settled in a small town in Germany for a few years until her parents divorced when she was only five years old. Her mother's difficult life as a divorcee convinced her that she would never marry. Although Ortrud grew up without a religious atmosphere at home, she received religious instruction at school and the sacraments of the Catholic Church. When Ortrud was a teenager, her maternal grandmother died unexpectedly and her mother traveled to Austria for the funeral, deciding to remain there permanently. There Ortrud's mother returned with fervor to her Catholic faith after the loss of her mother, and began to fast and pray for the return of her six children to the faith as well. Meanwhile, Ortrud moved in with her oldest sister and brother-in-law in Landshut, Germany to finish her schooling and often visited her mother in Austria on school vacations. She strongly resisted her mother's new mission to convert her however, and even threatened to stop visiting if she kept talking about religion. Although her mother remained silent on the matter, she handed Ortrud a pamphlet with Jesus on the cover as their next visit came to a close. Despite accepting the pamphlet in order to avoid an argument with her mother, Ortrud avoided it until Easter vacation was about to begin. She decided to read one small page of the pamphlet in order to appease her mother at their upcoming visit. She was home alone when she finally opened the pamphlet from the diary of the Polish nun, Saint Faustina Kowalska, randomly. Jesus' words to Sister Faustina hit her like lightning as He explained that His mercy was greater than any human or angelic mind could fathom and invited every soul, no matter how sinful, to draw close to His merciful heart. Ortrud realized in that moment that Jesus loved her more than she could imagine and was convicted that she didn't want to be indifferent to Him anymore. She was overwhelmed by deep emotions of contrition and felt a force that brought her to her knees as she cried out over and over, “Jesus, from now on, I want to be your friend.” The next morning was Sunday and to her sister and brother-in-law's great shock, Ortrud woke up early and went alone to church for confession and Mass, never missing another Sunday Mass again! Meeting Padre Pio By 1964, Ortrud was living with her mother in Austria. Two years later, the family had planned to meet in Rome for her brother's wedding. When the documents for his wedding disappeared, Ortrud's mother decided to seize the opportunity for the family to use their time together to visit a holy monk named Padre Pio, who had the stigmata and lived near Rome, in San Giovanni Rotondo. At first, Ortrud was excited to see a saint, but their first experience was Padre Pio's 5:00 a.m. Mass, in which people were pushing and shoving so much that her brother-in-law lost his shoe, another person's glasses flew off their face, and people were racing down the middle aisle and jumping over the pews in such a frenzy that it seemed more like a sporting event. When Padre Pio entered the sanctuary, he looked old, weak and sickly. Ortrud felt sorry for him and for the misled people who seemed more devoted to him than to Jesus and Mary. As she watched Padre Pio celebrate Mass, she was disappointed that nothing extraordinary happened, even inside of her.

Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest Lectionary: 452All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is Saint Pio of PietrelcinaIn one of the largest such ceremonies in history, Pope John Paul II canonized Padre Pio of Pietrelcina on June 16, 2002. Today we contemplate in him how sweet is the ‘yoke' of Christ and indeed how light the burdens are whenever someone carries these with faithful love. The life and mission of Padre Pio testify that difficulties and sorrows, if accepted with love, transform themselves into a privileged journey of holiness, which opens the person toward a greater good, known only to the Lord.” Click here for more about Padre Pio!
[Comment: Holding Mary's Hand] Friends of the Rosary, Padre Pio lived with the Rosary in his hands. He was always seen fingering his Rosary beads in his monastery in San Giovanni Rotondo, in Italy, where he lived and is now buried. We've collected seven of his key thoughts about the Rosary: • ”It was Our Lady who taught us this prayer, just as it was Jesus who taught us the Our Father.” • ”In times of darkness, holding the Rosary is like holding your Blessed Mother's hand.” • “Pray the Rosary every day.” • ”Abandon yourself in the hands of Mary. She will take care of you.” • “She is present in all the mysteries and she participated in everything with love and pain.” • “Love our Lady and make her loved.“ • “Satan wants to destroy this prayer, but in this, he will never succeed.” [Written by Mikel A | The Rosary Network, New York] [Video Podcast of Today's Rosary] ___ For following the holiness of Padre Pio based on prayer, charity, and patient suffering, always with his Rosary in hand. Padre Pio lived the Franciscan spirit of poverty with detachment from self, from possessions, and from comforts. For being open to the Holy Spirit, amend our lives and pursue holiness, following the fruits of the Luminous Mysteries that we pray today. ___
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cassiordl/message
Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saint Pius of Pietrelcina, Priest Lectionary: 451All podcast readings are produced by the USCCB and are from the Catholic Lectionary, based on the New American Bible and approved for use in the United States _______________________________________The Saint of the day is St. Pio of PietrelcinaOn Sept. 23, the Catholic Church remembers the Italian Franciscan priest St. Pio of Petrelcina, better known as Padre Pio and known for his suffering, humility and miracles. The man later known by these names was originally named Francesco Forgione, born to his parents Grazio and Maria in 1887. His parents had seven children, two of whom died in infancy. They taught the five surviving children to live their faith through daily Mass, family prayer of the rosary, and regular acts of penance. Francesco had already decided at a young age to dedicate his entire life to God. At age 10, he felt inspired by the example of a young Capuchin Franciscan, and told his parents: I want to be a friar with a beard. Francescos father spent time in America, working to finance his sons education so he could enter the religious life. On Jan. 22, 1903, Francesco donned the Franciscan habit for the first time. He took the new name Pio, a modernized Italian form of Pius, in honor of Pope St. Pius V. He made his solemn vows four years later, and received priestly ordination in the summer of 1910. Shortly after, he first received the Stigmata Christs wounds, present in his own flesh.Along with these mystical but real wounds, Padre Pio also suffered health problems that forced him to live apart from his Franciscan community for the first six years of his priesthood. By 1916 he managed to re-enter community life at the Friary of San Giovanni Rotondo, where he lived until his death. He handled many duties as a spiritual director and teacher, covering for brothers drafted into World War I.During 1917 and 1918, Padre Pio himself briefly served in a medical unit of the Italian army. He later offered himself as a spiritual victim for an end to the war, accepting suffering as a form of prayer for peace. Once again, he received the wounds of Christ on his body. They would remain with him for 50 years, through a succession of global conflicts. Against his own wishes, the friars reputation for holiness, and attending miracles, began to attract huge crowds. Some Church officials, however, denounced the priest and had him banned from public ministry in 1931. Pope Pius XI ended the ban two years later, and his successor Pius XII encouraged pilgrimages to Padre Pios friary.Known for patient suffering, fervent prayer, and compassionate spiritual guidance, Padre Pio also lent his efforts to the establishment of a major hospital, the Home to Relieve Suffering. Padre Pio died in 1968, and was declared a saint in 2002. Three years after his death, Pope Paul VI marveled at his simple and holy life in an address to the Capuchin Order.A worldwide following gathered around him ... because he said Mass humbly, heard confessions from dawn to dusk and was it is not easy to say it one who bore the wounds of our Lord, Pope Paul explained. He was a man of prayer and suffering. Saint of the Day Copyright CNA, Catholic News Agency

Renzo Piano

While Padre Pio was not American, as Tom and Noëlle Crowe tell us, he did have some interesting interactions with US servicemen during and after WWII, including reports of a flying friar waving off bombers over San Giovanni Rotondo and rescuing a US pilot over the Pacific whose parachute didn't open. Lanciano is a small, medieval town , nestled in from the coast of the Adriatic Sea in Italy, halfway between San Giovanni Rotondo and Loreto. Everything about Lanciano smacks of the Eucharistic Miracle. Even the name of the town was changed from Anxanum (in ancient times), to Lanciano, meaning “THE LANCE”. Tradition has it that the centurion, named Longinus, who thrust the Lance into the side of Jesus, striking Him in the Tip of His Heart from which He shed blood and water, (in the Gospel account of the Crucifixion (Mk 15:29)) was from this town. After seeing the events which followed the piercing of Jesus’ heart, the darkening of the sun, and the earthquake, he believed thatChrist was the Savior. A more physical sign, however, was that Longinus had had poor eyesight, and after having touched his eyes with the water and blood from the side of Jesus, his eyesight was restored. What a perfect parallel the actions of the Centurion were to the Eucharistic Miracle. He touched the Heart of Jesus, was healed, and converted. He gave up the Army, went to Cappadocia, and was martyred for the faith. He is known now as Saint Longinus. His feast day is celebrated on March 15.It was in the year 700 that the Miracle of the Eucharist occurred.Miracle of the Eucharist of Lanciano bookMiracles of the Eucharist bookMiracles of the Eucharist dvdMiracle of the Eucharist of Lanciano ebookMiracle of the Eucharist of Lanciano audiobookRelated Miracles of the EucharistPilgrimage to ItalySupport the show (https://www.journeysoffaith.com/donate)

The Giro d’Italia headed to San Giovanni Rotondo, one of Italy’s most important religious centres, and stage six of the race gave the host nation its first stage victory and pink jersey of 2019. Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe recap another long day in the saddle for the bunch, and welcome the sight of some sunshine after yesterday’s cold rain. Gianni Savio’s star rider Fausto Masnada won the stage, beating Valerio Conte at the finish, although Conti had the significant consolation of taking the race lead from Primoz Roglic. We speculate on how long Conti might keep the jersey now, plus wrap up all the day’s talking points. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science in Sport.
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The rain fell on the Giro d’Italia peloton more or less the whole way from Frascati to Terracina, meaning a sketchy sprint finish at the end of stage five. Join Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe as they attempt to dry out in Terracina as they recap a very wet day and a second stage win for Giro d’Italia debutant Pascal Ackermann of the Bora-Hansgrohe team. We discuss Tom Dumoulin’s departure from the Giro with Dutch journalist Hans Ruggenberg after the 2017 champion and 2018 runner-up withdrew a few kilometres into the stage following his crash yesterday. We speculate on whether Primoz Roglic’s Jumbo-Visma team may be happy to let the pink jersey go out on loan during tomorrow’s hilly stage to San Giovanni Rotondo and there’s reaction to the doping scandal that forced Bahrain-Merida’s Kristjian Koren out of the race, including an interview with the team’s coach Paolo Slongo.

**Today's host(s):** Scot Landry and Fr. Matt Williams **Today's guest(s):** Fr. Jay Mello, parochial vicar of St. Patrick Parish in Falmouth and columnist for The Anchor newspaper * [St. Patrick Parish, Falmouth](http://www.stpatricksonline.org/) * [The Anchor, official newspaper of the Diocese of Fall River](http://www.anchornews.org/) * [Fr. Jay Mello's column, "Putting Into the Deep"](http://www.anchornews.org/columns/putting_into_deep_mello/) **Today's topics:** Fr. Jay Mello's vocation story; The Rosary and Marian devotion **A summary of today's show:** Fr. Jay Mello discusses with Scot and Fr. Matt the essential nature of Marian devotion for Catholics, the benefits of the Rosary for union with Christ, and pilgrimages to Marian apparition sites. Also the Scavi tour in St. Peter's Basilica and Where in Europe was Fr. Matt? **1st segment:** Scot welcomes back Fr. Matt to the program after his European pilgrimage and vacation. He traveled with his sister and parents and they prayed a lot for WQOM and its listeners. They only saw rain once on the trip and that was on the drive from Rome to Assisi. Scot sent a shout-out to the graduates of the MAster of Arts in Ministry program and George Martell is taking photos and posting them to the Archdiocese of Boston's Flickr site in real-time. Also in breaking news today, the Daughters of St. Paul and the Archdiocese have worked out an agreement to end a lawsuit over the pension funds held by the Archdiocese on behalf of the lay employees of the religious order. Scot said this topic will be discussed in more detail on tomorrow's The Good Catholic Life. * [Joint Statement from the Archdiocese of Boston and the Daughter of St. Paul](http://www.bostoncatholic.org/Utility/News-And-Press/Content.aspx?id=20602) * [Masters of Arts in Ministry at St. John's Seminary](http://www.tineboston.org/mam_index.html) * [Photos from today's MAM graduation](http://www.flickr.com/photos/bostoncatholic/sets/72157626805181396/) We've had several conversations about the Blessed Mother and the Rosary this month because May is dedicated to the Blessed Mother. Fr. Jay Mello, today's guest, has dedicated his columns in The Anchor newspaper this month to the Rosary and we'll discuss the Rosary on today's show. **2nd segment:** Scot and Fr. Matt welcome Fr. Jay to the show. Scot said he and Fr. Jay go way back. Jay was a teenager when Fr. Roger Landry, Scot's brother, was assigned to Fr. Jay's parish. Scot asked him about his vocational journey. Fr. Jay said Bishop Seán of Fall River (now-Cardinal Seán) assigned a series of seminarians to his parish and he was exposed to the idea of a vocation. His family was very involved with the parish and he became involved with the parish community itself. At the end of high school, he was praying on Holy Thursday in Adoration and on Easter Monday morning he met with his pastor to tell him he was ready. That fall he went to Franciscan University of Steubenville for his undergraduate work and then went to the North American College in Rome for his theology. It was in Steubenville that he really learned what it meant to be a Catholic and where he learned what it meant to live in a Christian community; where his faith became real to him. The friends and roommates in Steubenville were some of the best people he knew. Fr. Jay was ordained in 2007. After his ordination he went back to Rome to finish his degree. When he returned he was assigned to St. Julie's parish and then was assigned to Falmouth last year.Serving on Cape Cod is very different. In the summer, the Cape is hopping. There is a summer chapel a mile from the church. On the weekends, they go from 4 weekend Masses to eight. The retired priests from the Archdiocese of Boston living on the Cape give a lot of help. He's been writing the column "Put Out Into the Deep" for a little less than one year. He's inherited the column from Fr. Roger Landry, the current editor of The Anchor. He's dedicated his columns in May to the Rosary. The column itself is about re-awakening those parts of our faith that we have let become too casual, that we won't forget their importance. Many people have rosaries and know what they are, but often they're hanging from their neck or rearview mirror and not being prayed. There's a sentimental attachment to the Rosary or even treating it as a lucky charm. The Rosary provides a great opportunity to contemplate the life of our Lord through the eyes of the Blessed Mother. Fr. Matt said the rosary beads are like an umbilical cord to Mary and through the mysteries of the Rosary we are formed in the womb of Mary to become like her Son, to become like Him. The more you enter into praying the Rosary, the more she's able to help Christ be formed in you. Fr. Jay say we can get too focused on the prayers that we're saying--the Our Fathers and Hail Marys--that we can miss the opportunity to meditate on the mysteries of Christ. In his column, Fr. Jay describes the difference between devotion to Mary and adoration or worship. He said there's often a misconception of our relationship to the Blessed Mother. We worship God alone. The veneration toward our Blessed Mother can equal that. Yet the great role God chose for the Blessed mother is very important for us. Christ establishes a relationship between us and the Blessed Mother at the foot of the Cross. Fr. Matt asked Fr. Jay to share with us what he wrote about Bl. John Paul and his devotion to the Blessed Mother. For him, Mary is not just the first disciple of Christ, she is the most perfect disciple. In his motto, Totus Tuus, in giving ourselves to Mary, she leads us to her son. At the wedding feast at Cana, people who are struggling go to Mary and she doesn't solve the problem, but she sends them to her son. In 2002, the Holy Father gave us the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. For centuries we had the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries. He was courageous in adding these mysteries to focus on different moments of Christ's public life. The Joyful mysteries jump from His childhood to the Sorrowful mysteries of the Passion. The 5 Luminous mysteries allow us to see certain moments of Christ's life that help us to see who Christ really is. Scot said the Rosary was a simple way to pray the 150 Psalms and then morphed into praying the Our Father and Hail Marys. Fr. Matt said St. Dominic would preach the power of the Rosary against evil and to keep people united in Christ. The more you keep faithful to praying the Rosary, it keeps you faithful to Christ. One time when Padre Pio was suffering greatly, he asked a confrere to give him his "weapon", and when asked to explain, he said, "My rosary." John Paul II always had a rosary in his hands. The Rosary keeps us united in the life of Christ so as we live in this world we can live in union with Him. **3rd segment:** Fr. Matt said he was just in Rome last week with his family and they caught the overflow of Bl. John Paul's beatification. What stands out is that you can't look at the man without acknowledging his devotion to Mary. In preparing for the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25, he looked at homily by Pope Benedict in 2009. He wrote that the Gospel tells us that from that hour, St. John took his mother Mary to his own home. But the Greek is far richer and could say, He took her into his inner life and his inner being. Fr. Jay said Marian devotion is not an extra. It is an essential part of the Church. It is a way to live out our baptismal promises, by allowing Mary to enter the inner being of who we are. Fr. Matt said in the total consecration according to St. Louis de Montfort, we understand virtue by looking to Mary, who loved her Son perfectly. * ["Preparation for Total Consecration" by St. Louis de Montfort](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0910984107/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=pilo0e-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399349&creativeASIN=0910984107) Scot asked Fr. Matt about the role of Mary in our lives in the present day, appearing in numerous apparitions, many of which have been approved by the Church. During this trip, Fr. Matt was able to go to Lourdes. He said it is a place steeped in prayer. Mary asked St. Bernadette for people to pray the Rosary and to adore the Eucharist and every day in Lourdes there is a Eucharistic procession and then a Rosary procession. Fr. Matt said there many people who come with disabilities seeking God's healing either physically or in giving them strength for their journey. It began when the Blessed Mother appeared to St. Bernadette in 1858 in Lourdes, France. *[Office site of the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in France](http://www.lourdes-france.org/index.php?goto_centre=ru&contexte=en&id=405) There was a miraculous spring that spouted during the apparition and there have been 65 scientifically confirmed miraculous healings from those waters, but there have been thousands who claim a miraculous cure. In all this, the Blessed Mother encourages her children to pray the Rosary. Scot asked Fr. Jay why people should make pilgrimages to sites of Marian devotion. Fr. Jay said what he sees at these pilgrim sites are people who return to their faith and to the sacraments. He sees people return to Confession by the thousands. Pilgrimages have a longstanding history in the Church. It's not a vacation or sightseeing tour. It's a time to pray and allow the Lord to workin our lives by visiting places where great saints have lived, worked, and died. **4th segment:** Welcome back. It's time to announce the winner of the weekly **WQOM Benefactor Raffle**. Our prize this week is a copy of Father Leo Patalinghug's cookbook “[Grace Before Meals](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0307717216/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=pilo0e-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399349&creativeASIN=0307717216).” The same Father Leo who defeated Bobby Flay on the Food Network show “Throwdown” helps you make family meals a way of life, showing that mealtime is the perfect setting for discussing the major issues all families face. This week's winner is Eileen Sheehan from Holliston, Massachusetts. Congratulations Eileen! We'll be announcing the winner each Wednesday during “The Good Catholic Life” program. **5th segment:** During his time at the North American College in Rome, Fr. Jay was a guide for the Scavi tour. St. Peter's Basilica was built over the tomb of St. Peter, which was actually discovered in 1939 during an excavation under the basilica. The bones of St. Peter were found in his tomb. The Scavi is not just a museum or an historical site. It's the story of St. Peter and that he gave the tour, by tracing the life of St. Peter in Scripture and then afterward when he traveled to Rome to spread the Gospel and eventually give his life. * [The Scavi](http://www.saintpetersbasilica.org/Necropolis/Scavi.htm) Fr. Matt said on this trip he was able to take a Scavi tour on the feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13. First, it is astonishing to realize that you are walking on the ground of a 1st century necropolis or cemetery of mausoleums. That necropolis was later filled in and Constantine built the first basilica over it. Fr. Jay said St. Peter was buried on the Vatican hillside and Christians would gather at the tomb to venerate his remains for three centuries. The Constantine basilica put a high altar directly above the tomb and over the next 1,500 years successive altars were placed on the same spot so that when the Pope celebrates Mass on that altar, he is doing so directly over the remains of St. Peter. * ["The Bones of St. Peter," by John Evangelist Walsh](http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0385150393/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=pilo0e-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399349&creativeASIN=0385150393) The best way to get tickets for the tour, go to the North American College's website. But you need to plan 3 to 4 months in advance to get tickets. The tours start about 9 am and occur every 15 minutes, but only 4 or 5 tours a day are in English and only about 15 people per tour. * [North American College's Scavi tour information](http://www.pnac.org/pilgrim-information/scavi-and-vatican-museum-information/) * [Vatican webpage on the Scavi tour](http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/institutions_connected/uffscavi/documents/rc_ic_uffscavi_doc_gen-information_20040112_en.html) * [Virtual tour of the Scavi](http://www.vatican.va/various/basiliche/necropoli/scavi_english.html) **6th segment:** Scot asked Fr. Matt about his trip to Europe with his family. It was an aggressive itinerary that started in Lourdes for a couple of days and praying at the shrine, where they experienced the amazing baths that pilgrims can be immersed in as they pray. Groups from Boston go every year, including a group with the Order of Malta who take people who are ill who go to pray for healing. *[Order of Malta Lourdes pilgrimage](http://www.maltausa.org/lourdes.php) Fr. Matt also traveled to San Giovanni Rotondo where Padre Pio, a Capuchin saint, lived. He lived with the [Stigmata](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14294b.htm) of Christ. He had a great gift of prayer and of confession, being able to read people's hearts. Fr. Matt was able to celebrate Mass at the same altar where Padre Pio received the Stigmata in 1918. He said the crowds were relatively light. * [Shrine of Padre Pio, San Giovanni Rotondo](http://www.sacred-destinations.com/italy/san-giovanni-rotondo-padre-pio-shrine) He then traveled to [Assisi](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisi) to visit the Basilicas of St. Francis and St. Clare. While the basilicas were heavily damaged in earthquakes about 10 years ago, you wouldn't know it today. He was able to pray at the tombs of St. Francis and St. Clare and the cross of San Damiano. Scot said Assisi is one of the most beautiful cities and an excellent example of an ancient European village. * [Basilica of St. Francis, Assisi](http://www.assisionline.com/assisi__162.html) He also went to Lanciano, Italy. It is the location of a Eucharistic miracle where a monk was struggling with his belief in the True Presence of the Lord. During the Mass the Host turned into real flesh and real blood. It remains as living flesh today. Scientists have typed the blood as AB. * [Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano](http://www.therealpresence.org/eucharst/mir/lanciano.html) They also traveled to Venice, which was an opportunity for a little vacation time but also to visit the [Basilica of St. Mark](http://www.basilicasanmarco.it/eng/index.bsm), where the remains of St. Mark are in the high altar. That will conclude today's presentation of The Good Catholic Life. For recordings and photos of today's show and all previous shows, please visit our website: TheGoodCatholicLife.com.
