Last episode was our birthday and this episode is our 50th! Cheers! For our 50th episode, Katy has two Washington-state stories that are spooky (Kell's Irish Pub) and spooky adjacent (the very tragic tale of the murder of Jennifer Bastian and how her ghost is reportedly seen in Point Defiance Park). We are, of course, ready as hell for the Animal Crossing update. We will give you our thoughts, of course. Katy had never really experienced Zak Bagans before researching Kell's and is truly, truly baffled by his whole... [gestures generally] thing. There's an unexpected connection to our Starvation Heights episode (#33)! The gum wall remains gross. Amber Becerra traveled from Los Angeles to Tacoma for a short 24-hour trip ahead of the holiday weekend. She wanted to see an old friend get his happy ending.
Drugs: you know I love ’em! We reminisce about them in this episode, in particular LSD. Thrill to the spectacle of a guy laying across a footbridge at Tacoma’s Point Defiance park while a mother and her kids avoid crossing a small stream, learn what to look at while at the movie theater (here’s a hint: it’s not the movie) and ride along with our heroes as they brave Revolution 9 (Number 9, Number 9, Number 9…). But wait! There’s more than drugs in this episode. Did I mention theft of a bear? How about crappy equipment, Sean’s perilous journey back to the fire, us making enough noise to clear the city of Parkland, charred pork products and someone taking a bet on said pork product? All this and more as we live through another jam packed podcast! But that’s not all because there is more that I can’t even remember! That’s how good this one is!
Walruses have a huge vocabulary of sounds. They whistle, they grunt, and they can even sound like a steam train. But, Rosemary Ponnekanti says, they also can sound musical. “They make bell-like sounds and they can use their flippers to make percussive noises,” said Ponnekanti, who works on the communications team at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma. “They also get this funny, guttural kind of (sound) — I can’t even do it myself because I don’t have the right equipment in my voice.”
In the face of an increasingly confusing and complicated array of environmental threats, now including COVID-19 where is the hope? In this session we get to talk to someone with a clear idea of the way forward. We are introduced to the power of data visualization and the very real changes that have been brought about in our planning in the face of environmental change: bringing healing to the Duwamish river in Seattle and re-designing Point Defiance beach park to mitigate the impacts of anticipated sea level rise. We discuss how science is now at a new frontier for making data actionable, just in time for surviving new advancing threats such as COVID-19!Date: 7/28Facilitator: Robin Evans-Agnew + Madison Thakera, RN Summer Volunteer Research InternSpeakers: Heidi Roop
Take a trip with Alyssa and Kristen out to haunted Washington, where we investigate the spooky Nanny and her babysit-ees that still haunt the Walker Ames house (mysteriously on some kind of six week timer) before we cycle over to see Jennifer's ghost in Point Defiance. Sprinkling in some true crime on today's episode! Let's go see a ghost (and hopefully, Stanley Tucci)!

A great example of what happens when you record a podcast in public spaces, this episode contains perhaps my favorite moment of well-timed irony. Rachel Overby is in the middle of sharing a story about rude dudes yelling dumb shit at the her all female band (Bitch Boys) while they're on stage, and from out of nowhere a man interrupts us, realizes we're recording a podcast, and takes it upon himself to perform for our audience. Is it kismet? Or just entitlement? You decide.

Beginners. During the summer, my family and I took a trip to a beautiful and fascinating place. It was a zoo and an aquarium at a place called Point Defiance, near Seattle. A friend of mine had been there, and told me that it was worth a trip. We were staying close by, on the coast, in a friend's house. It took about an hour and a half to get there by car which was fine. When we got there, it was quite a shock. The huge parking area was completely full. Infact, cars were parked on the side of the road because there were no more parking spaces available. When we got inside, I understood why it was so full. It is an incredible place. The aquarium is very large and varied. We saw penguins, seals, otters, walruses, and a huge amount of smaller sea creatures. I loved the jelly fish. They were a small, see-through species. They were in a dark tank with lights shining up. They looked like pretty little ghosts as they moved through the light. We spent a lot of time looking at the walruses. Gosh they were enormous. One swam up to the window where we were and stayed there, yawning, snorting, and looking at us. It was quite a show. Grammar notes. Preterite and pluperfect of : to be, to tell, to swim, to take. Exs: He was a very handsome man; he had been a pilot in the war. I told you we needed new batteries. Jim had told you too. He was tired of swimming. He had swum a mile in total, so he swam to the beach, got out, and fell asleep on the sand. I took the car to the service station to have the oil changed. I didn't realise that you had taken it in already. Advanced. Point Defiance is on the coast right near the city of Tacoma. As we walked down the hill towards the entrance, we could see the sea. It was quite spectacular. The children were dying to sea the tigers, so we walked through the 'Asian Forest' area, through paths of bamboo, and into a cave-like area where we could look through glass into the large living area of the tigers. The adults were napping, laying on grass, barely moving. The babies, though, were right up close the glass, just relaxing, not seeming to take much notice of any of us. It was a thrill to see them. It was after the tigers that we went into the aquarium. There was so much to see. Again, we walked through a cave-like area that was dark, past windows of different fish, until we came to a huge aquarium. In it were sharks! I'm not sure what kind they were, but they certainly were intimidating. They circled around and came right up to the glass to check us out with their cold, black eyes. I wasn't sure who was observing who. I certainly wouldn't want to find myself swimming anywhere close to them. Grammar notes. Useful vocabulary: cave-like, to be dying to, barely. I found the house cave-like; it was dark and had low ceilings. I am dying to try that cheesecake; that bakery makes the best dairy treats. As the child slept, he barely moved. You could just see his chest rising and falling as he breathed. // //
