Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comHow should the church engage with the world without becoming entangled in political partisanship? In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Steven Felix-Jäger to discuss his book The Problem and Promise of Freedom: A Public Theology for the Church. As an artist, scholar, and minister, Dr. Felix-Jäger explores how the church can cultivate a faithful public witness through generosity, hospitality, and a biblically grounded understanding of freedom—without falling into the traps of culture wars and power-seeking.We discuss the dangers of politicized theology, the role of the church in societal issues like immigration and justice, and how Christians can balance civic engagement with their ultimate allegiance to God's kingdom. Dr. Felix-Jäger also shares insights on consumerism in the church, the importance of discernment in modern political discourse, and how the church can embody the radical love of Jesus in a deeply polarized world.Guest Bio:Dr. Steven Felix-Jäger is an artist, scholar, minister, and educator whose work explores the intersection of faith and culture. He is an Associate Professor of Theology and Worship, Chair of the Worship and Media Department, and Director of Academic Research at Life Pacific University in San Dimas, California. He holds a PhD in Theology from the University of Wales, an MFA in Visual Art from Azusa Pacific University, and an MA in Ministerial Leadership from Southeastern University. His latest book, The Problem and Promise of Freedom: A Public Theology for the Church, examines how the church can faithfully engage in public life without becoming captive to political ideologies.Resources & Links:

Artificial Intelligence also known as A.I. for short is a set of technologies that enable computers to perform a variety of advanced functions, including the ability to see, understand and translate spoke and written language, analyze data, and make recommendations and more according to google cloud. Many professions are utilizing this tool, and colleges are integrating it into their courseloads this fall. Professor Carrie Sipes is the Department Chair and Professor of the Communications, Journalism, and Media Department at Shippensburg University. She encourages her students to use A.I. “I love encouraging students to use AI during their brainstorming sessions of their projects, right? It can really streamline ideas. It can give you more ideas to consider. So if you put in a prompt and an AI software, you can come up with a lot of ideas for a project. And then you could use your brain to build out 1 or 2 of those ideas, to see which one is the one that you think is the best choice for you at this time.” Jeff Ritchie is the Chair and Professor of Design, Media, and Technology at Lebanon Valley College. Ritchie says although it could be helpful, it could be utilized in an unethical manner. “It also can be used to cheat and to misrepresent, as your own thought something. So again, I think is carried spoke to before. You know, a lot of our existing laws and practices are predicated on technologies. You know, the printing press brought about the idea of intellectual property rights. I don't know what these laws will look like, when AI is there, you know, do we share ownership or, you know, so much is up in the air right now about how we will decide to proceed, with these legal, ethical and just policy-based decisions.” Professor Sipes teaches a course called Digital Tools, and A.I. related tools for photography and videography will be among the courseload. “But it's more for a creative the creative process and creative outcomes for the work that they'll create in that course. Certainly, there's lots of conversations about, like I mentioned earlier, you know, what is plagiarism? What it you know, when it comes to AI, what is you know, if you're going to turn in work that's used AI, what's required for you to to do that in order to not, you know, fall into the plagiarism category or, have high scores on, ChatGPT or GPT zero, etc.. Kind of scan of work.” However, even if A.I. is used to cheat on assignments, Professor Sipes says professors can always tell if the student has used A.I. to write an entire assignment.   “You can you can tell almost immediately by reading the first few sentences, if it's using words that people just don't use, it's it doesn't have that human element to it, even though it's based on, you know, the algorithms that are pulling all of this content together. So, we're definitely having conversations like that with students that I would rather see you as student submit work that has some errors in it. You're 18, 19, 20 years old. Like, that's what we're expecting to see. We're not expecting to see error free. But we also want it to see that we want you to show that human personality that you have. And so I think emphasizing those kinds of things and, and letting students know, like, look, we're watching for these things too, and we want you to use these things in an ethical way is, is a conversation we have pretty regularly.”  Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So how do you keep performing as a musician when your hearing deteriorates? What techniques do musicians develop to cope with it? And what do cocktail parties have to do with it? CONTRIBUTOR BIO Ruth Hansford is getting closer to finishing her PhD in the Music and Media Department at Surrey. She has a background in languages and literature and a long-standing interest in listening and storytelling. Her PhD journey, which started off over a decade ago with a project on noise, music and hearing with the BBC Performing Groups, has involved a series of interviews with musicians who have been talking about their changing relationship with their ears. In this episode we discuss in some detail the USAFL, among other things, it's apparent blackballing of our podcast even though we have only been spreading the news of Aussie Rules footy in the USA, talking to its players, administrators, supporters and even the USAFL's own umpires. We have been disturbed by the lack of acknowledgment by the USAFL's Media Department and the USAFL itself, in ignoring a great coverage of Aussie Rules footy in the USA for no cost or resource strain to them. And also why the USAFL media is arbitrary to put it mildly, and biased recently to the extent of up to 75% (up until now we should add) in covering AFL and AFLW football, when there are 45 clubs and over 50 teams here in the USA, that should we feel be constantly highlighted, talked about and promoted. Her works deals with issues of representation, the role of the computer in shifting contemporary values about identity and the real, and ideas about what is usually called the “natural.” Her project is to feminize the masculinist culture of technology by interjecting emotional subjectivity into the overly-determined Cartesian world of digital design.

The Digital Oblivion. State University of New York in Buffalo. /// The restoration and conservation of paintings and sculptures was never just a question of style and composition, but also a question of materiality. Similarly, the restoration and conservation of media art works is never just a question of concept, but more than ever a question of materiality. What will museums do with art works whose deterioration is foreseeable, be they the chocolate sculptures of Dieter Roth or magnetic tape or data storage. My thesis is: storage space is expanding infinitely, storage time is imploding at ever shorter intervals. The shortage of resources is the fate of the technical storage media and of the technical arts, from neon lamps to television sets. Born in Odessa in 1944, Peter Weibel studied literature, medicine, logic, philosophy and film in Paris and Vienna. He became a central figure in European media art on account of his various activities as artist, media theorist and curator. Since 1984 he is professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, from 1984 to 1989 he was head of the digital arts laboratory at the Media Department of New York University in Buffalo, and in 1989 he founded the Institute of New Media at the Städelschule in Frankfurton- Main, which he directed until 1995. Between 1986 and 1995, he was in charge of the Ars Electronica in Linz, he c ommissioned the Austrian pavilions at the Venice Biennale from 1993 to 1999. From 1993 to 1998 he was chief curator at the Neue Galerie Graz, Austria, and since 1999 he is Chairman and CEO of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe.
