In the fourth part of a series of talks about the 'Going for Refuge and Prostration Practice of the Buddha Shakyamuni', Vajratara shifts the perspective from us contemplating the Refuge Tree, to the figures on the Refuge Tree contemplating us. Blessings or adhisthana is the way the Buddha responds to us, and all we have to do is tune in. How do we remain receptive? What does it feel like to be blessed and purified? What are we purified of? February 26, 2025 Today's Reading: Genesis 45:3-15Daily Lectionary: Job 21:1-21; Job 21:22-30:15; John 8:39-59“I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.” (Genesis 45:4b-5)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Until the moment Joseph revealed himself to his brothers, they were very afraid. Simeon had been taken prisoner the first time they showed up. Benjamin was about to be taken as a slave, which would kill their father. And Judah had just offered to be the sacrifice to pay for Benjamin's sin. It was a selfless act done for the sake of a brother who was loved, for a father who was loved. Besides, it had been the brothers' own sin that had caused this mess in the first place. They had acknowledged that sin on the first trip down, where Simeon was lost. To lose another brother in the same way brought that sin right back to the forefront of their thoughts. So it wasn't solely a selfless act; it was Judah confessing his own sin and the need for him to be the sacrifice that paid for it. It was at this point that Joseph stepped forward and told his brother, Judah, “You're not the sacrifice. I am.”The one sinned against went before the brothers into Egypt. He endured slavery, prison, and becoming an Egyptian in order that they would be saved. He gave up all that they might live. We, too, have sinned. We sin against God. We sin against our brothers and sisters, the people God has put in our lives. And standing before God cannot help but remind us where we have done wrong and failed to do what is right. Convicted of our own sin, we know a sacrifice must be made. Sin must be paid for. And the price must come from us.It is at this point that Jesus steps forward and tells you, “You're not the sacrifice. I am.”The one sinned against goes before you into this world. He endured the suffering life of this world. He was betrayed, beaten, and crucified. He shed His blood on your behalf. He bore your sin on His shoulders so that you would not have to. He entered into death, in order that it might be conquered in full before you got there. And He gave up all that you may live. He says to you, “I am your brother, Jesus, whom you sinned against. And now do not be distressed, for the Father has sent Me before you to preserve life.” He has preserved your life. Your sins have been forgiven. The sacrifice has already been made. And His resurrection is yours forever. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Sin disturb my soul no longer: I am baptized into Christ! I have comfort even stronger: Jesus' cleansing sacrifice. Should a guilty conscience seize me Since my baptism did release me In a dear forgiving flood, Sprinkling me with Jesus' blood? (LSB 594:2)-Rev. Eli Davis, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Grants Pass, OR.Audio Reflections Speaker: Pastor Jonathan Lackey is the pastor at Grace Lutheran Church, Vine Grove, KY.What makes a church "good?" The Presbyterian Church has a long history rooted in the Protestant Reformation, but what exactly sets Presbyterianism apart from other Christian traditions?Pastor Jeff Cranston sits down with Reverend Bill McCutchen, lead pastor at Hilton Head Presbyterian Church, to explore the key aspects of Presbyterian theology. If you haven't seen part 1 of this conversation, feel free to go back and listen. Here's What We Discussed00:55 - Infant BaptismMany Christian denominations, including Presbyterians, practice infant baptism—but why? The practice is rooted in covenant theology, where God's promises extend to believers and their children. They also baptize older children, teenagers, and adults who come to faith later in life. 03:24 - Covenant Theology and BaptismWhat does it mean to be part of God's covenant? God's promises have always been generational, from Abraham to the New Testament Church. He highlights Peter's sermon at Pentecost, where he says, “The promise is for you and your children” (Acts 2:39). 06:03 - Sprinkling vs. ImmersionPresbyterians typically use sprinkling or pouring. Rev. McCutchen explains that the Old Testament frequently refers to ritual cleansing through sprinkling (Ezekiel 36:25). The Greek word for baptism (baptizo) can mean to immerse, but also to wash or cleanse. While immersion symbolizes death and resurrection, sprinkling and pouring emphasize the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:17). 10:18 - Church Governance in PresbyterianismUnlike some churches that are led by a single pastor or bishop, Presbyterian churches follow a plurality of elders model. McCutchen explains the difference between Teaching Elders and Ruling Elders. As far as allowing women pastors it depends on the denomination. The Presbyterian Church in America holds to a complementarian view; women can serve in many leadership roles but not as ordained pastors or elders. 15:04 - The Core of Reformed Theology: TULIPReformed theology is summarized by the acronym TULIP:Total DepravityUnconditional ElectionLimited Atonement Irresistible Grace Perseverance of the Saints These doctrines were developed in response to Arminian theology and remain foundational to Presbyterian beliefs today.20:14 - Closing ThoughtsReverend McCutchen and Pastor Jeff reflect on the importance of unity in Christ, despite denominational differences. Visit Hilton Head Presbyterian Church: https://www.hiltonheadpca.com/leadership Join the ConversationWe love your feedback! Paedobaptism is contrary to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Paedobaptism is contrary to the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. Paedobaptism is not in the Bible. Paedobaptism is either dangerous error or damning heresy (depending on the individual) and needs to be exposed as such for love of Christ, His Church, and a multitude of perishing paedobaptists who are trusting in sacramental sprinkling and Jesus in the same soul damning way the Judaizers of Galatia were trusting in circumcision and Jesus (See Gal. 1:6-10 & 5:1-6). Baptism is the immersion of Holy Spirit regenerated and indwelt repentant Gospel believing confessors of Jesus Christ as Lord in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! Sprinkling unregenerate, unconscious, unrepentant, unbelieving, unconfessing babies and then pronouncing them covenant bound Christians is not baptism. The Bible knows nothing of this. The antichrist heretical Roman Catholic Church knows it well and has been glad to lend it to a great many professing "reformed" Christians who have failed to apply Sola Scriptura and Semper Reformanda to their doctrine and practice of baptism. Just as love demands that we call our Roman Catholic neighbors to repent of their heretical baptism and believe the Gospel...love demands that we call many of our Protestants neighbors to repent of their heretical baptism and believe the Gospel. May God be pleased to purify, protect, and reform His Church.

In the second Servant Song it was revealed that the Servant Prophet will bring comfort to people and have compassion on the afflicted. For the third Song we saw that this Servant Disciple will live a perfect life of discipleship, to show that it is attainable and that a life of total obedience to God and trust in God for all things is possible. Then we saw in the last chapter that there will be a big homecoming for the people of Israel and for all nations. During the previous Servant Songs we say glimpses of the suffering this Servant who is both a King and Prophet will endure. Now in this section, this Servant Song we get the full picture of suffering and why He must suffer. This is how people will on the last day be consummated with God and attention is now back on him as 52:13 states "Behold, my servant". Echoing previous passages of where the Servant is God's. This is, as somebody once wrote, "the jewel in the crown of Isaiah's theology, the focal point of his vision." It is as if we are meant to understand that nothing that has been said before is as important as this passage. Without this passage of Scripture, none of the rest makes sense. Let us discover together why that is so. The Servant Exalted The beginning is an adoration of the Servant, as is the song's finale. Sandwiched between them is the description of suffering. This servant acts and speaks with wisdom. How could He be faithful and obedient to God, if He were not wise? Not just any wisdom, but Godly wisdom which flusters and confounds mere human wisdom. This Servant will be raised up! Here Isaiah uses ecstatic language used of God Himself. And what attracts people to this Servant? Certainly not his looks, charisma or appearance for He had no outer beauty that would attract anybody. Verse 14 indicates the level of suffering the Servant will endure. Many are flabbergasted by it! Verse 15 shows the cleansing, the sprinkling indicating a sacrifice. Sprinkling needed to be done with water, oil or blood in order that people could enter into the presence of God. This cleansing, is not for Israel alone, but for all nations and people. He who was considered unclean by many humans (52:14), will be the one to cleanse many other humans from across the world. Then all accusations, and slander against the Servant will cease. The Servant Despised The passage now looks at the Servant through the eyes of the nation of Israel, for it is through their words and actions that others will come to know and understand about the Servant. Even though Israel is disobedient and rebellious, there are still some who fear the Lord (50:10). When those people see the full picture of what the Servant has done, then they will go naturally to tell others about it. Whereas before they would simply be witnesses about God, now they would be witnesses about the saving power of God through the Servant's suffering, death and glorification. What of this Servant? He had grown up like any other boy, just as a plant grows from a root in soil. As time goes on, nothing about Him is special and any promise He showed was decidedly unimpressive. The Servant will be persecuted, despised, rejected, insulted and hideous. So hideously malformed that people could not look at Him. These people considered him an implement of God's deserved torment. That was what the witnesses were thinking. While God ultimately crushed the Servant, it was not because the Servant deserved it. But rather the witnesses realize that they were the ones who deserved punishment and not the Servant. Just as the animals when offered as sacrifices were substitution offerings in Israel's worship, so too was this Servant a substitutionary sacrifice. A sacrifice that through His body being pierced and his being crushed for sin, the Servant has provided a way for others to be comforted and pardoned. That way being at a cost. A cost of the Servant's own life. The Servant Suffers Silently Now a solitary witness speaks out. If this is Isaiah, he was cleansed by God back in chapter 6. but what of his countrymen? How will they be cleansed and how as stray sheep will they be gathered back into relationship with God? The Servant is led to His death, just as a lamb is led to be butchered. This Servant goes quietly and obediently to certain death, through oppression and judgment. His death as an innocent Servant, and buried in the grave with the wicked and guilty. Silent. The Servant Suprises Now in verse 10 we have the surprise! Death is not the end of this Servant! Yes God had bruised Him and caused the Servant to suffer. But, the Servant was an offering for sin! That way the Servant will offer righteousness to all the nation. The Servant's mission will be accomplished! God will raise this Servant from the dead and the Servant will be exalted! His sacrifice will surpass any and all previous sacrifices and be the only and final sacrifice needed! Through His death, the Servant will be able to judge righteously and enable those who follow Him to live righteously. Righteously in the sense that His knowledge and wisdom will cause many people to live new lives that are pleasing to God. A righteousness that only comes from people being in relationship with God, instead of being enemies of God. How is Jesus this Servant? In Acts 8:26-40, the Ethiopian asked the question of Philip "who does the prophet speak about?" Philip replied that it was about Jesus. Jesus Christ who grew up as Luke said "increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and men." (Luke 2:52). This Jesus who people called the son of a Nazarene carpenter and who people said "Can anything good come from Nazareh?" This Jesus who did not have anything attractive about him, but the way in which He spoke, the wisdom He imparted and the life that He lived. Jesus Christ who was betrayed by one of his closest friends. This Jesus, who was the Lamb of God, who died on a Roman Cross, after a trial where he was falsely accused, tortured and oppressed. This Jesus, who was rejected by even those closest to Him when He died. This Jesus who cried out "My God! My God! Why have you abandoned me? This Jesus who even though without sin, was buried in a grave for the wicked. This Jesus who rose victoriously from the dead 3 days later, in order to conquer death, sin and the devil. This Jesus, who ascended to the right hand of the throne of God, in the beauty of exaltation and glorification. This Jesus, who alone is the only way that people can one day enter into God's presence when all of history is consummated. This Jesus, the suffering Servant who was a Servant King, Servant Prophet and Servant Disciple. This Jesus, who is the Lord and Saviour of the universe. This Jesus who as fully God and fully human simultaneously, is the only one who could be the full sacrifice demanded of God for the everlasting payment for sin. The Jesus who will judge with righteousness and wisdom, give all people a choice to make - be His disciple and be in a dynamic relationship with God, or go your own way and be astray from God forever. A Winter Cottage FrolicBased on a post by Drmaxc. Listen to the ► Podcast at Steamy Stories. "Normally I meet up with my sister and her family at, we own this cottage. It was our great aunt's, and we've sort of kept it for holidays and so on. Sentimental really. Middle of nowhere but lovely in the summer and well, we usually meet there for Christmas but she can't this year so I might just stay here at the flat. Always fun with her children at the cottage, well her grandchildren now. A busy house and a real family Christmas, not having a family of my own. We got snowed in one year. The children, that was her children then, loved that. You know, snowmen, igloos, snowball fights and importantly plenty of wood for the fires. It's a bit basic.""Sounds lovely. Like Father Christmas' place in Lapland. I can just imagine you there in your coat and boots.""It's not a log cabin! And I don't usually dress like this. And not that much fun on your own, hence I might stay at my flat. I don't know, I might go but perhaps not the most sensible thing to do at my age, on my own. I shall probably give it a miss."It was the next day, after their day's work. It was clear Sylvie had something to ask. As was becoming usual, she sat on Malcolm's lap. Upon the table the management had placed a bowl of fruit. They seemed to be looking after their Father Christmas. "I wondered, Malcolm, I wondered if, Elvin and I were talking, and we don't really want just to stay in the flat over Christmas. It occurred to me, "Sylvie picked up a banana from the bowl and fingered it. To Malcolm it was all rather suggestive the way she was moving it around her fingers."I mean you'd like to go to your cottage, but your sister can't make it with the children, and you don't want to be there alone. A shame, but would it be a second best, I mean sort of win-win, we get to go away, and you get to the cottage if, might we stay with you there over the holiday. It might snow and we get trapped in. Exciting! Would you mind?""We could take board games and snowy walks are always good and there's plenty of logs and coal to keep us warm. That's a nice idea, Sylvie. I'd be delighted to play host.""Goody! You could bring your robe and be Father Christmas and we could wear elf outfits. What fun. I'd love to see you dressed like that out in real snow. And, and, Malcolm, we could have sex. We could play seasonal sexual games.""But, Elvin?""How much do you like sharing, Malcolm? Do you like to watch and share?”She had reached into his robe and was stroking him but had the banana in her other hand and made a pretense of having two cocks within her hands, pretending to wank the banana as she was wanking him. She brought the banana into his robe and against him, touching his erection with it and then holding them in her hands together. His penis curving away from the banana, the banana curving away from him until she squeezed, and his knob came up against banana. Sylvie was rubbing his cock against the banana.Sylvie grinned, a very naughty look,"Do you like to share a woman, Malcolm? I like the idea. I like the idea very much.""But will Elvin?""He'll have to come to like it, no, I'm sure he will. I just like the idea, the thought of the three of us, your cock in my cunt and Elvin's cock in my mouth. Could you do it, Malcolm, would you mind, could you share my cunt with Elvin, and let me blow you as Elvin reams my ass?"Beneath his snowy white beard Malcolm smiled at Sylvie,"I don't think I'd have too much trouble about that."" Elvin is a young man, and his load comes fast; often before I've had my satisfaction. That's when I really need another cock, if needs be,"Malcolm's seasonal employment was at an end. No work for a Father Christmas after the big day. Malcolm would be able to have a bit of a lie in now he was no longer a working man, though there were other pieces of work he seemed to be able to pick up. And he had his pension. But before a return to his more usual routine, he had a little seasonal break to attend to. A shame not seeing the grandchildren, but it seemed the disappointment was to be tempered by a different sort of pleasure. Sylvie and Elvin playing very different games. Malcolm packed his Father Christmas outfit and wondered what else to pack. Warm clothing certainly but what about pajamas? Would it matter if he met Sylvie or Elvin on the landing of the cottage both heading for the bathroom in the middle of the night if he was naked given what seemed in prospect? Malcolm's cock began to thicken as he thought of meeting a naked Elvin on the landing both stark naked and both 'piss proud.' Perhaps standing and conversing with their penises at full stand with the moonlight slanting in at the window. Not at all 'I'll met by moonlight, proud Titania.' Elvin was neither woman (or female fairy, if, perhaps, to be an elf!) and the prospect of meeting the young lad naked and erect was certainly not 'ill' to Malcolm. What might the little holiday at his cottage bring. Malcolm smiled remembering how Sylvie had rubbed the banana against him. Elvin's cock might well stand proud but not as proud as his. Malcolm could see the reflection in his mirror. He might be an old and very white-haired man but that was indeed some cock he sported. Malcolm stroked imagining not simply meeting Elvin by moonlight but a touching of their cocks, rubbing them there on the landing, soft penile skin and smooth knob ends stroking together.Might perhaps Elvin beckon him and lead him into their bedroom to see Sylvie asleep. Unlikely in the winter the covers would be off, but it was a nice image. The two of them standing in the doorway looking at her sleeping form and both fellas wanking. Malcolm certainly was wanking at the thought, bringing himself to the edge imagining Elvin and he ejaculating together over the sleeping girl. A longer quotation from Midsummer Night's Dream came to him, one he had learnt by rote at school:'I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine:There sleeps Titania sometime of the night,Lulled in these flowers with dances and delight.' Malcolm smiled. Sylvie as Titania in her bower, in her bed all unknowing as she is watched. How good for two men to come up to a sleeping girl. Take in her charms and cum all upon her.Not take her as such or even touch but just cum. A not uncommon fantasy. Coming into the bedroom of a sleeping young woman, a babysitter or friend's daughter perhaps and looking.Malcolm, though, needed to get going, needed to pack the car and collect the two of them. It was a long drive, and they would arrive late at the cottage. It was neither time to be wanking and certainly not to empty his balls into his hand or wherever: after all, he might well need that semen later on! He continued packing. No pajamas but he did have a nightshirt. That might be fun.It was indeed a long drive, Sylvie ended up asleep in the front seat beside Malcolm and he was not sure that Elvin did not drop off as well in the back. They would not know where they were when they awoke; did not see the snow start to gently fall, not enough to impede the driving but enough to give the landscape a dusting of whiteness. Malcolm was sure there would be more by the morning. The car bumped up the final track and stopped outside the old stone cottage. The bumping and rocking of the car on the unmade track did not seem to wake Sylvie but the sudden quiet when the engine stopped did."Are we here?""We are indeed."Malcolm opened the car door, and the flash of the car's internal light momentarily hid everything. They all got out and doors were closed plunging them back into darkness. Around them they could dimly make out the hills and moors and the sheer loneliness of the cottage."Oh, wow, it's snowed!"Just a dusting still but it made the scene white even in the sudden darkness. Hardly a light to be seen anywhere, the cottage was remote, just the stars twinkling."Grab your bags and come on in." The car boot opened and then Malcolm reached for the old key and turned it in the lock of the front door to the cottage. He flicked the switch and the yellow glow of the electric light from inside the house was momentarily blinding, and then Malcolm was inside, and the others followed. First things first, the lighting of the wood burner to start to heat the house after its long rest. Then the kettle on, before Malcolm showed them around. Bags up to their bedroom and then he left them to it whilst he busied himself making tea and a late supper.Good to sit around the wood burner as the room warmed. It was not time for sexual play. That would be on the morrow. This was just a comfortable settling in after a long journey and late arrival. Malcolm stayed sitting by the fire after his guests had gone up to bed. Sent with two hot water bottles. He heard the creaking of the floorboards above as they moved around and the on/off of the plumbing. It was good to be back at the cottage. He filled the wood burner so it kept warming the house through the night, needed after its long rest, and went around tidying, washing up and setting things ready for the morrow. Breakfast things set out upon the table.Later, upstairs Malcolm donned his nightshirt. He stood in the darkness of his bedroom before getting into bed looking out of the window at the moonlit scene. The snow was falling heavier now. He rather suspected a lot would fall by morning. A white Christmas, at least up on the moors. Back at his flat he might well, at that time of night, been standing at his window with penis pressed against the glass watching Sylvie and Elvin cavort upon their bed. This night they were in the same cottage as him, two doors down the landing. Might they be copulating now, or already asleep? Malcolm lifted the cotton and allowed his newly erected cock to come out and touch the glass. It was cold but not enough to dampen his arousal. If they were copulating, would they mind him coming to watch? He did not think Sylvie would mind at all. Indeed, he looked at his bedroom door half wishing there to be a knock and she inviting him to come and see all. Malcolm stroked himself as he looked out upon the snowy landscape, his cock so delightfully turgid in his hand. Might he simply ejaculate upon them or join in? What was it going to be like when they did all have sex together? Elvin would not have come to the cottage; Sylvie would not have come if that was not really in prospect. Might Elvin offer his Sylvie rather more formally, even though he knew what Sylvie and Malcolm had done at the store. Perhaps not just a verbal invitation but a physical one.A wetness against the cold glass, a leaking from Malcolm's big knob.Of course, he wanted release, he nearly always came before bed. But not this night. He should keep it in ready for the next day. He had great hopes of that. He lifted the material of the nightshirt back over his cock and got into bed.Two o'clock in the morning Malcolm awoke as he had planned and tiptoed out and to the other bedroom. There they were, the two snuggled together under the covers. Malcolm would like to have lifted the covers, inspected to see if copulation had occurred, felt between Sylvie's legs; peeled back Elvin's soft cock and felt for stickiness; perhaps even sucked upon it; the feel of a soft penis between his lips, he had not felt that for many a year.Between the folds of his robe his hard cock peeked out.It was all very much Sylvie's idea of Father Christmas. It was very much Malcolm's idea of Father Christmas. He reached down, grasped, and slid the smooth skin. Father Christmas wanking as he stood in the young people's bedroom. Of course, he had thought of the idea before. Throwing fairy dust or something over sleeping people and engaging with them as they slept. He had certainly had thoughts of some of the young mothers at the department store when they had brought their youngsters to sit on Father Christmas' knee. Had thought of turning up at their house and slipping down the chimney with his fairy dust. Of course, to leave presents in the little one's stockings or pillowcases, but most definitely also to leave something else with the young mothers! Oh yes! Sprinkling that 'fairy dust' to keep the young mother and probably young father asleep whilst Malcolm took his pleasure. Him silently creeping into their room, a peak around the door and then a sprinkling of fairy dust.A sprinkling of fairy dust before revealing his cock. It would not, of course, be white bearded Malcolm dressed in that modern 'Santa' suit of red trousers and short red mock-fur lined jacket but in the long traditional red coat, just as at the department store. And, of course, nothing else underneath but his long black boots. Malcolm liked that idea. The idea of exposing himself in the young couple's bedroom, slipping his long red coat from his shoulders like a woman might let slip a negligee and standing there stark naked but for black knee length boots. Standing with his large cock rigid beneath, well, his somewhat portly stomach. Malcolm's physique was not that of a young man. It was very much Father Christmas, all rotund with large belly and a considerable amount of snowy white hair, but not really like the popular conception of the fairy tale of a genial old gentleman scattering presents, not with that good, upright, and rather large cock rearing as he pulled back bedclothes from the sleeping couple.Sleeping soundly with the fairy dust. What delights might he see, and feel? How might he like to find them? Like dark Sylvie and rather small Elvin or quite different. A tall, statuesque blond woman, perhaps naked or with nightdress rucked up revealing an exciting triangle of blond curls, an equally tall, perhaps taller, strongly built man with a penis even larger than his own. How good to find it erect, massive and chunky, perhaps even with the woman's hand upon it in sleep. Wonderful to find as he parted the young mother's legs to find her blond-hair strewn sex almost awash with earlier deposited semen. The man virile enough to be aroused in dreams even after a fuck not an hour or two before. What fun Malcolm would have. What fun would Father Christmas have with the young couple's fairy dust sleeping bodies. His penis would touch, how it would touch the young mother, how it would rub. How he would bury his face in her blond curls and lap liquid femininity with an added male spice.T the young father's generative organs. Clearly potent and virile. And finally, of course, mix his own white curls with her blond curls, intimately and wetly mixing before insemination.A so delicious emptying of his balls into the young mother, swollen cock on fire and his nipples tingling. There was wetness at the end of his erection, almost dripping on the carpet as Malcom stood over Sylvie and Elvin and wanking to his thoughts.A near ejaculation, Father Christmas 'on the edge.' But Malcolm had not come into Sylvie and Elvin's room to scatter fairy dust and play. Whilst good to stand there wanking, as he did so often to the sight of them, but never in their bedroom with them before, he was really there in his traditional role. He was leaving presents, real presents at the end of their bed. They would have his cum most likely in the morning but for now two filled stockings needed placing on the end of their bed, long socks filled with all sorts of little presents he had bought more as fun than anything else. Heavily traditional with sugar mice, tangerines, walnuts, chocolate in the shape of, Father Christmas, and more modern useful things like pens, a dressmaker's rule, a penknife and, jolly winter socks.Stockings deposited but no other deposit made, a still tumescent Father Christmas, substantial penis poking out through his robe, crept from the bedroom.Morning came and Malcolm rose and looked out of his bedroom window. It had snowed heavily in the night, the landscape a winter wonderland. A white Christmas indeed, there on the moors, an achingly pretty but cold picture postcard scene. He dressed and went downstairs to relight the fire and prepare breakfast. He was sitting at the kitchen table, mug of tea steaming in front of him when his guests appeared down the stairs. Excitement as if they were little kids, Christmas Day, the snow outside and the fun of what they had found in their stockings. Arms around Malcolm and a big hug and kiss from Sylvie, her soft body against him. Malcolm got to work cooking a hearty breakfast."You didn't come into our bedroom in costume, did you Malcolm?""Ho, ho, ho; of course I did.""And we didn't wake!""Sound asleep, tucked up like good little elves."It was Sylvie who suggested it later after breakfast, but had it not been her who had talked of him wearing his red coat at the cottage. He had said they should go for a walk and the idea had been taken up with enthusiasm."Can we, Malcolm, can we go out with you in your coat and boots? We could dress too.""I don't think it really is the day for wandering around in the all-together!"He might have thought that but, But Sylvie meant she dressing up too in her elf costume. And so Malcolm came down the stairs a little later dressed as if for work, at the department store. He was, though, wearing rather more under the great faux fur trimmed robe. Vest, shirt, woolen pullover, thick socks inside his black boots. Thick thigh length woolen socks in fact. But he was taking a little bit of a risk with his rather male equipment. No underpants, no trousers. In that he was just like being at the department store. He was swinging free. After all he did not know if an elf might slip a hand under his coat at some point, did he?Malcolm stepped outside. The snow had certainly fallen in the night, his car a large snow-covered blob, the track he had driven up hidden under a carpet of snow. Snow everywhere, virgin snow with just bird claw prints and the odd animal track to be seen. It seemed almost wrong to step further and make footprints. Which route to take? He knew the landscape even under snow. Knew where to walk.Behind him his visitors came out into the morning. Sylvie in her green pinafore corduroy dress but rather more than her usual red shirt underneath. She was padded up a bit by at least one more shirt and a jumper. Brown walking boots on her feet, scarf around her neck and her hair back into pigtails under her bright red woolly bobble hat. Sylvie the elf out in the snow. But she was not alone. Another elf with her. It was all rather pleasing; certainly, to a rather randy old gentleman like Malcom. Long red socks. Elvin in Sylvie's spare but shorter green corduroy dress. And it did not look like he was in drag. It appearing simply as a tunic. A red shirt with, again plenty beneath. On his feet shiny black Wellington boots seemingly polished, the straps done up tightly clasping his legs and no doubt containing at least two pairs of socks. And what covered his knees and thighs. Were those really tights, thick green tights? A red bobble hat, a scarf and, as with all of them, gloves completed the outfit.Father Christmas and two attendant elves setting out, unfortunately without sleigh. Now wouldn't that have been fun. A horse drawn sleigh rather than reindeer drawn. Not a lot of reindeers in Yorkshire!A few flakes fell as they set off on their walk but on the horizon a crack of light suggesting the sun was going to break through. Sun on snow, perhaps even blue sky, and certainly it was remarkably still as they trudged along often boot deep in snow. In a hedgerow they spotted a robin jumping about even joining them for quite a way, landing on the snow and looking at them. Was it hopeful they might start digging and unearth 'delightful' titbits for it? There was the occasional wren too, out and about searching for food. Maybe in the night it had huddled together with other wrens, somewhere sheltered, the birds perhaps a dozen at a time rotating around each other to benefit from their shared warmth. It was not that cold, particularly as the party was moving, stomping along through the snow. They met no one, of course. But wouldn't someone have been just a little surprised at the appearance of the party. They were not exactly blending into the landscape. Not with Malcolm's great red coat. Might they have been seen from far off? What a sight. Father Christmas and his elves on the fells in the snow and the sun. Three quarters of the way around the route they came down into a little dell. It felt warmer there, perhaps the sun's rays a little trapped. It was Sylvie who started it. A snowball fight. Perhaps not a normal Christmas card scene with Father Christmas and two elves throwing snowballs at each other. Energetic and fun. Warming even. Sylvie and Elvin scampering around in their dress and tunic. Al

Monday, 9 September 2024   When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. Matthew 3:16   “And having been immersed, Jesus immediately ascended from the water. And behold! The heavens – they were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and coming upon Him” (CG).   Jesus just explained to John that His being immersed was fitting for them to fulfill all righteousness. With that, John immersed him. Next, it says, “And having been immersed, Jesus immediately ascended from the water.”   The words, like in Acts 8:38, 39 are almost immaturely argued over. Some adamantly state that the words “ascended from the water” refer to Jesus' ascending from the act of immersion, arising out of the water. Others argue that it is speaking of ascending out of the river itself and that John could have simply sprinkled Jesus. In other words, “Jesus descended from the banks of the Jordan, stood in front of John who then sprinkled Him, and then Jesus ascended to the banks of the Jordan.”   The reason for this type of argumentation is to either “prove” or “disprove” one's preferred method of what today is known as “baptism.” The argument, however, ignores the fundamental point of baptism. It also ignores the original meaning of the word. The purpose of baptism was a symbolic thorough cleansing from one's past life. Only immersion provides the proper symbolism.   The meaning of baptizó is “to immerse.” Sprinkling fits neither the purpose nor the meaning. The Greek word rhantizó, used four times in Hebrews, signifies “to sprinkle.” The cognate noun rhantismos, which signifies “a sprinkling,” is used in Hebrews and 1 Peter 1:2.   Jesus went to John who was immersing in the Jordan. John immersed Jesus. From there He then either ascended out of the immersion or out of the Jordan, “And behold! The heavens – they were opened to Him.”   There is debate about who “Him” is referring to, John or Jesus. The reason for this is that in John 1, it says –   “And John bore witness, saying, ‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.”' 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.” John 1:32-34   Thus, it is possible it is referring to John who is then the one to confirm Jesus as the Messiah. However, Jesus is the nearest antecedent in the account –   “And having been immersed, Jesus immediately ascended from the water. And behold! The heavens – they were opened to Him.”   Unless there is a compelling reason to change the referent, it is best to assume the nearest antecedent continues to be the subject. John's having seen the same manifestation of the Spirit doesn't change anything. It simply means that they both saw the same event. Understanding this, and most likely continuing to speak of Jesus, it says, “and He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove.”   This does not mean that the Holy Spirit took on an actual form, as if He was incarnate. Rather, this is a manifestation of the Spirit through the creation. Just as God elsewhere is said to display His voice as thunder, creation is used to display the effects of God. As for the descent “as a dove,” that could mean “in the form” of a dove, or “in the manner” of a dove. The former is correct based on Luke 3 –   “When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, ‘You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.'” Luke 3:21, 22   Concerning the significance of the dove, innumerable claims are made. One is that the dove represents the Holy Spirit. This is, of course, based upon the account of Jesus' baptism and, possibly, a misapplication of the words of Genesis 1:2 where the Spirit “brooded” over the face of the waters. However, one would have to assume the dove is specifically being referred to. Others see the dove as a symbol of Israel. Thus, this is signifying that Jesus is the true fulfillment of what Israel signifies. The uses of the dove in the Old Testament do not appear to bear that out.   The Greek word is peristera. It can refer to a dove or pigeon. It doesn't tell us much, especially because what the word is derived from is unknown. Rather, the symbolism must be based upon the many uses of the yonah, or dove, in the Old Testament. This would include the man Yonah, or Jonah.   The word yonah is probably derived from the same as yayin, wine. Thus, there will be a great deal of similarity to be drawn from the two, something that is too long for this commentary. A possible root, or at least a cognate word, is yanah, a word that generally signifies doing wrong to someone. In Leviticus 19:33 we read this –   “And if a stranger dwells with you in your land, you shall not mistreat [yanah] him.”   This then stands in opposition to the phrase, “Love him as you love yourself,” in the next verse of Leviticus. As noted, a word closely associated to yonah is yayin, or wine. That gives the sense of effervescence. Thus, by implication, intoxication.   Taking these thoughts and considering them in relation to the various uses of the dove throughout the Old Testament, the dove's symbolism can be summed up with the words, “mourning love.”   When the Holy Spirit descended upon Christ, it was certainly with the thought of mourning in mind. He was about to begin His earthly ministry, one which would be fraught with sadness, pain, punishment, and death. And yet, there is the absolute love of God being expressed in and through the incarnation of Jesus Christ. This is the general idea of what is being conveyed as the Holy Spirit was descending as a dove “and coming upon Him.”   The moment of the beginning of Christ's earthly ministry is realized in this. Unlike an inanimate object that follows a single, directed path, Christ Jesus is set to wander about in His humanity. And yet, He will remain on the set path of following God's will as He chooses to reject the temptations of human existence and to be perfectly obedient to the will of His Father in heaven. His moral compass will never deviate from this ideal perfection of the human will.   Life application: Although immersion has already been reviewed, the commentary above gives additional information to help solidify the notion that sprinkling is not what is intended when the Lord commands baptism in Matthew 28. Rather, if a person is sprinkled, that is not a baptism, it is a rhantism.   If Jesus wanted His people rhantized, He would have said so. But He commanded that they be baptized. Words have meaning. To change the meaning of a word from its original context is to form a pretext.   When we use the word repent, it should be used in the biblical context of “to change the mind.” Now that the word has evolved in English to mean “actively turn from sin,” it no longer means what the Bible originally intended. Rather, one is to reconsider the path he is on. Actively turning from sin may be a healthy result of reconsideration, but that is not what reconsideration means.   Using the word baptize no longer carries the original meaning as it once did. Thus, saying immerse is far preferable to get the sense. Be aware of the evolving nature of languages. In understanding how they change, you can properly modify your thinking about what the Bible is saying, and your doctrine will be more properly aligned with what God intended all along.   Heavenly Father, thank You for the safeguarding of the original languages in which the Bible was first presented to Your people. Even thousands of years later, we can know what was originally intended in words that are no longer even used because we have all of that stored up information. And thank You for those who have carefully protected this knowledge throughout the ages. Praises to You, O God, for this precious and unchanging word. Amen.

Wednesday, 4 September 2024   I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Matthew 3:11   “Indeed, I, I immerse you in water to reconsideration, but He coming after me is mightier than I. He is whom I am not adequate to lift His sandals. He, he will immerse you in the Holy Spirit and fire” (CG).   John had just told the Pharisees and Sadducees that any tree that did not bear fruit would be cut down and thrown into the fire. Now he steps back and tells them about his ministry in comparison to that which is coming, beginning with, “Indeed, I, I immerse you in water to reconsideration.”   John was a prophet under the Old Covenant. Like other prophets, his calling was to get the people to wake up from their spiritual slumber and reconsider their ways. They were to return to the Lord, living for Him and not for idolatry, perversion, and self-indulgence.   His call went out, and for those who accepted it, he immersed them as a sign of their reconsideration. This was confirmed long after his ministry in the Book of Acts –   “Then Paul said, ‘John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.'” Acts 19:4   As for Paul's words which noted that John directed the people to another, that is confirmed in John's continued words, saying, “but He coming after me.”   John understood that his role was to direct the people to the Lord through reconsideration of their ways. And yet, he speaks of One coming after him, meaning in the timing of his ministry. John came first and only then did Jesus make Himself manifest as the Messiah, even if the two ministries overlapped. Of this coming One, John next says He “is mightier than I.”   The word generally speaks of physical strength. In the case of John's words, it must extend beyond that because John's ministry was not one of physical prowess, but of spiritual strengthening. What he says about the coming One also speaks of spiritual matters, even if they include the idea of physical strength through metaphor. What he will say will be matters of judgment and salvation or condemnation. Next, he continues his description, saying, “He is whom I am not adequate.”   He uses a word, hikanos, that speaks of sufficiency, the root of which means to arrive at or come to. Thus, it is that which is adequate. John signifies that there is never a time he will be adequate “to lift His sandals.”   It was a metaphor that all would understand. If a man had slaves, the lowliest job for the lowliest slave would be to wait for the master to come through the door into the house. When he arrived, this slave would take off the shoes of his master and then proceed to wash his feet.   The meaning, when taken in light of Jesus' words, is astonishing –   “For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” Luke 7:28   Of all of the prophets, John was the greatest, and yet he was unworthy to lift the sandals of Jesus. John rebuked Israel's leaders and even Herod the king with authority, and yet he was unworthy to take on the lowliest of duties of the least servant in the presence of the Messiah. And instead of immersing people in water, John next notes that “He, He will immerse you in the Holy Spirit.”   The necessary connection to God for man to be restored to Him was available through the immersion of the coming Messiah. In this thought, the ideas of infant baptism and sprinkling are completely eliminated. Infants are not prepared for immersion. Sprinkling a person with the Holy Spirit does not come close to the intended meaning.   Rather, it signifies a complete and absolute change in status for the person. He goes from one position before God to a completely new one. This coming baptism is next described with the words “and fire.”   Fire speaks of purification. Fire burns up, removing that which is temporary or unneeded. At the same time, it also purifies that which can withstand the fire. This fire is not referring to the vengeance of God against unbelievers. They will not be immersed in the process. They remain outside of what the Messiah will do for His people. There is another type of fire awaiting them.   The symbolism of the fire is seen in Acts 2 –   “When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:1-4   This was a one-time outward demonstration for the sake of the people. It was a visible manifestation of the inward change that results from the purification of the person, making him acceptable to God.   Life application: The effects of accepting Jesus as the Savior through faith in what He has done are absolute and total. Even if we are still living in corruptible bodies that continue to sin, the purification that has come through believing the gospel is once and forever.   The immersion is complete, that which is impure, and which separates us from God is removed, and we enter into new life. To say that this can be lost is to say that what God has done was in error, was insufficient, and that the salvation provided by Him remains up to us to maintain. In other words, it was not actually of faith, nor was it sufficient to save at all. Instead, the cross of Christ – though a nice attempt at salvation for the people of the world – was a failure.   This is what teaching the loss of salvation means. It points to a “god” who developed a plan that cannot overcome the frailty of humanity. In other words, it defaults back to the power of human endurance and self-sufficiency. If that is where you have put your hope, good luck with that. For those who understand the true and eternal effects of the ministry of Jesus Christ, we will rest wholly and entirely in His merits alone. In the end, guess whose merit will stand?   Lord God, may we never presume to rely on ourselves or our own goodness before You. Rather, may we remember the feelings we felt when we heard of what Jesus did? We were weak and stood at the abyss, ready to plunge in, knowing we had no hope. But when we heard the gospel, we trusted and were saved. How can we turn from that back to self? We will not! We will forever trust in Jesus alone. Amen.

August 19, 2024 Today's Reading: Joshua 24:1-2a, 14-18Daily Lectionary: 2 Samuel 11:1-27; 1 Corinthians 11:17-34Then the people answered, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the Lord to serve other gods (Joshua 24:16). In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.To be honest, the people's response here seems laughable. ‘Far be it from us…'? Seriously!? The Israelites were the worst. They. Kept. Sinning. They would repent and follow the Lord, only to be led astray by another people group, another king, another god… They would suffer, crawl back to God, and repent. The Israelites were not faithful. Frankly, they weren't even honest. They made this statement, but really, they were going to stray again. This statement seems silly. Good thing I'm not like…oh…wait…Sinners sin. We are the worst. We perpetually fail. Maybe we'll try again, but it's hard. Sometimes, we seem to make a bit of progress, but then we mess up again. We chafe against the boundaries that God calls good. We see our neighbors as competitors or nuisances. We suffer the consequences of sin. Maybe we aren't so different from the faithless Israelites. Thanks be to God that He remains faithful when we are faithless. Thanks be to God that He continued as the Israelites' God, even as they would stray and follow idols. Thanks be to God that He gives us the same mercy. We feel the consequences of sin, but we are not defined by them. We drag the Old Adam around with us, but we are identified by our Baptism and are saints. We are loved and forgiven. The Israelites hoped for and looked to the coming Savior. We look back to Jesus' Death and Resurrection, knowing that it happened for us. We remember our Baptism and know that we are washed in Jesus' Blood. We go to the Divine Service, receiving His Body and Blood for us. We rest in God's promises, made and kept for us. When we wake up to a new day, hopeful that today will be different…we cling to the assurance that every day is a day that we are covered by our Baptism. We can, in faith, declare our desire to love and serve our neighbor– to show them the forgiveness we have in Jesus. But when we fail, like the Israelites, and go back to the same sins and idols, we rest in Jesus. We claim His faithfulness as our own; we live in our Baptism, hear from His Word that we are forgiven, and cling to His promises.  In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Sin, disturb my soul no longer: I am Baptized into Christ! I have comfort even stronger: Jesus' cleansing sacrifice.
