EXPLORING SECRET SOCIETIES A secret society is an organization that conceals its activities, events, inner workings, or membership, and may or may not attempt to conceal its existence. Here's a more detailed look at secret societies: General Characteristics: Concealment: The core feature is the deliberate attempt to keep certain aspects of the organization hidden. Varying Degrees of Secrecy: Some societies maintain complete secrecy about their existence, while others may be known but keep their activities or membership lists hidden. Examples: Secret societies can range from collegiate groups like Skull and Bones at Yale to magical organizations or even groups with political or social agendas. Collegiate Secret Societies: Some secret societies have kept their membership secret until graduation; others never reveal membership until death. Membership: On campuses that have both secret societies and traditional fraternities and sororities, one can be a member of both kinds of organizations. That is, membership is not mutually exclusive. Usually, being a member of more than one traditional fraternity or sorority is not considered appropriate because that member would have divided loyalties. However, typically, there is no issue with being a member of a secret society and a fraternity, because they are not considered similar organizations or competing organizations.[1] Many secret societies exist as honoraries on one campus and may have been actual meeting societies at one time, kept alive by one or two dedicated local alumni or an alumni affairs or dean's office person who sees to it that an annual initiation is held every year. Some of these state that they are honoraries; others seek to perpetuate the image of a continuing active society where there is none. The Story of Damon & Pythias is a Greek Legend about the power of true friendship. It is set in the Greek Island of Sicily. Versions of the tale differ, but the best known of these variants is that told by Cicero in De Officiis. When one of the two friends is condemned to death by Dionysius I, tyrant of Syracuse, he asks to be granted time to put his affairs in order. Dionysius refuses until the other of the two offers to die in his stead if he doesn't return at the appointed time. When the condemned man returns at the appointed time, Dionysius is so moved by their friendship that he releases both. Carrie Tuggle and her husband, John, moved to Birmingham in 1883 in search of better work opportunities and social life. They threw themselves into work and growing their family. They both actively participated in the Knights of Pythias, a national fraternal organization. Carrie was a social worker and would see young boys in the court system being sent to prison with adults. It was too much for her to bear. The couple would start the Tuggle Institute to give youth another chance and change the lives of many in Birmingham. Carrie also helped create the Jefferson Family Court.Support the showSupport the Podcast The podcast is free, but it's not cheap. In a secluded corner of the wilderness around Mount Shasta in Northern California, a secret rite has been taking place for generations. No, it's not something from the latest thriller novel, it's the Cave Degree! In a natural cave that faces east toward Mount Shasta, Odd Fellows (and before them, Knights of Pythias) have been performing degree work. The Odd Fellows of Yreka Lodge No. 19 bought the cave from the Pythians in 1962 for $10 but had been using the cave for the Second Degree since 1940. The Cave Degree has become one of the most cherished traditions of Odd Fellowship in California and Oregon, with generations of members having made the trek out to the cave for the ceremony. For this episode we are joined by PGP Brian Riehl, RA VP Debra LaVergne, and NG of True Fellowship Lodge #52, Mason Wolf as they discuss the history and tradition of the Cave Degree, and one of its greatest champions and caretakers, Richard Brouse. The story of the Cave Degree has many twists, turns, and stories. We also discuss the current state of the cave and the efforts underway to rehabilitate the facility so it can again be used for the Second Degree of Odd Fellowship. The Lodge Shoutout goes to Friendship Lodge #50 in Northfield, Minnesota which was recently revived by a group of Masons who discovered Odd Fellowship and joined. In the Odd Podge there was definitely a theme of Odd Fellows helping one another out. Toby told about his lodge brother Matt in rehab and all the Odd Fellows of his lodge who had visited him. Debra shared the exciting news about a new baby born to members of Mountain View #244 in California. Mike gave the dates for Gerald Workman's Testimonial in Charleston, West Virginia in 2024. Ainslie mentioned the new article for the Heart In Hand Blog about the Hahn Farm Degrees written by Brother Mason Wolf. Brian also shared a story of visiting members in sickness and distress and also mentioned the Oktoberfest hosted by St. Helena Lodge which sent Toby into a near frenzy of desire to get one of their beer steins. To close the Odd Podge, Mason talked about his experiences going to Portland to render aid to a brother in need.

Aliens: The Psychic Element Are some Unidentified Flying Objects actually alien spacecraft? Possibly. – If there are other living beings on other planets in the Universe; – And some of those beings have developed practical interstellar space travel; – And most planets in this universe are dead; – Why wouldn't those beings come and visit our most fertile and unusual planet? But wait. Some aliens have one or more the following qualities: They: – Are insubstantial in material terms; – Are perceived mostly by psychic means; – Dwell in the lower atmosphere [2]; – Have variants on classic demon names like Ashtar (Astarte/Ashtaroth), Semjaze (Semjaza) and Moraney (Moroni); – Deny key aspects of Christianity (e.g. the divinity of Christ); – Grant power on foot of dangerous bargains [3]; – Leave scorch marks; – Cause fear in the humans they encounter; – Torture human beings. These are the traditional characteristics of demons. It would be delightful to think that benevolent aliens from distant planets walk among us, except some/many behave too much like man's oldest foe. Viewed objectively, some behaviours of aliens look very like those of traditional demons of Hell. Victims are assaulted and terrified, rendered temporarily helpless by strange ethereal creatures, usually at night. This may be viewed as a modern twist of an old folk experience: meeting an inhuman creature which prefers to operate in darkness. Non-religious persons are more comfortable with the idea of aliens, so the entities may be giving the public what it expects and/or wants to see. In the background, one or more central tenets of Christianity are denied and thus those who believe ‘alien' theories over doctrinal Christian faith will go to Hell when they die. An old trick is being played in at least some cases: The seeker after wisdom thinks he is being initiated into a great secret. The wise man knows that this is merely an update on an old lie: “You shall be like God.” The knowledge they gain makes their life life worse long-term, not better. They give away their liberty, life and soul for little-to-nothing. I perceive that those affected by UFO phenomena suffer, and not just because of the skepticism of their hearers. Another piece of evidence to support the demonic vector is that ‘channeled' space aliens have moved farther out in the cosmos accordingly as mere astrophysicists discovered that places like Venus and Mars were utterly devoid of life. The cause: the ‘aliens' are in fact con-artists. Nowadays locations like the Pleiades and the Andromeda galaxy are mentioned by modern Pythias as the source of their inspirations. I read a long account of the history of alien activity on Earth as channelled by a psychic, who I think is semi-famous. It's certainly detailed, but has elements that immediately arouse suspicion. These are its Gnostic elements which are primarily: – A dualistic idea of God; – The non-divinity of Christ; – The reliance on accounts of spiritualist and non-material phenomena; – The devil (Lucifer) portrayed as merely being understood; – Traditional demons portrayed as mere aliens; – The focus on ascension to near-godhood. This is very disappointing and annoying. People can waste their lives on this trash and make themselves mentally and spiritually ill if they practice meditative techniques associated with this strain of occultism. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/support

In this episode of Dover Download, Deputy City Manager Christopher Parker chats with Community Services Director John Storer and Environmental Projects Manager Gretchen Young about stormwater. Stormwater, which comes from ran, snow and other precipitation, is absorbed by soil and plants or remains on impervious surfaces, like pavement or rooftops. Young and Storer discuss how Dover manages stormwater runoff, including the possible creation of a stormwater utility, which has been recommended to the City Council by a committee formed to look at stormwater funding options. Once one of the largest fraternal orders in the country, the Knights of Pythias were well established in Dover. This week, in 1933, was an important time for the Pythians in Dover. We look back at why in This Week in Dover History.

Important PeopleDionysius I (the elder) - Tyrant of Syracuse taking power shortly after the Peloponnesian War and reigning until 367 BC. For some authors, he's the textbook tyrant in the way he held on to power, the fear that prevented him from trusting almost anyone (except his nephew Dion), and his cruelty. Though Plutarch doesn't mention it, this is the tyrant who shows up in stories like Damon and Pythias or The Sword of Damocles. Dionysius is called D-Prime in this podcast so that we don't confused him with his son or nephew. Dionysius II (the younger) - Less accomplished and intelligent than his father, Dionysius does manage to rule Syracuse not once, but twice. We'll see his comeback in Timoleon's story...Dion - The main character of our tale and one of Plato's best and brightest students. When he fails to convert either the elder or younger tyrant to philosophy, he finds himself exiled, stripped of most of his wealth, and finally discovers his wife has been ordered by the tyrant to marry another man. This means war and Dion takes it to Syracuse. Can he become the next philosopher-king? Will he instead train up a virtuous democracy to overthrow fifty years of tyranny? Tune in to find out!Plato - Yep. Plato was a real person who had a real life outside of his dialogues (in which he never makes himself a character). You'll want to check out Plato's Seventh Letter for another perspective on the events in this Life. If you haven't read this life, though, Plato's Seventh Letter will be a great deal more obscure. Philistus - An accomplished military mind banished by D-Prime but recalled by D-2, Philistus had taken up his pen in exile and written as a historian. As a political enemy and counterweight to Plato's influence on D-2, Plutarch has a lot of reason to hate this man. Heracleides - The perfidious but fun-loving rival as Dion tries to tame the tyrannical democracy. Heracleides would rather feed the beast and the tensions certainly mount as Dion fights not one tyrant, but two. Callippus - This perfidious Athenian doesn't seem important until the end... and then he's fatally important. Important PlacesCorinth - Mother city (metropolis, μητρόπολις) of Syracuse and prosperous city on the Peloponnesus. Syracuse - 5 major neighborhoodsOrtygia - The original island settled by the Corinthians who founded Syracuse. It still contained Achradina - The heights of the mainland settlement overlooking the ocean and the Neapolis region, famous for the stone quarries in which the Athenians died during the Peloponnesian Wars and after which Dionysius would use for political prisoners. Neapolis - the most recent addition to the city, North and West of Achradina and Ortygia, but enclosed by the fortifications D-Prime builtTyche - district of NeapolisEpipolae - high plateau in the Neapolis, included in the walls D-Prime builtKey Virtues + VicesCourage (ἀνδρεία - manliness, courage) - Dionysius I and Plato have a fight about what virtue consists in. Plato concedes that andreia is important but then proves publicly that tyrants are the least manly men. Aloofness - Dion struggles to win friends and influence people. Support the show

Kings Point´s Knights Of Pythias Interview 09-01-2020
James Baldwin had a great talent for taking old stories and tales and retelling them in an entertaining way. In this episode we bring you 1) Androclus The Lion- a story of a societal cast out who befriends a lion, 2) Bruce and The Spider- A Scottish king learns an important life's lesson from a spider, 3) Damon & Pythias- true friendship is a rare and valuable thing indeed, 4) Horatio At The Bridge- a story of how one man's courage inspired an entire city, 5) King John & The Abbot- King John becomes jealous of an Abbot who lives a grand lifestyle so he tells the Abbot he must answer three questions correctly or lose his head and all his property. A lowly shepherd provides a solution. SUPPORT OUR SHOW MONTHLY AT PATREON Become an Assistant Producer at 1001 Stories Network ( a great resume enhancement) and support us at Patreon today! In this episode, I read the short story "The Pythia," from Our Lady of the Dark Country, my 2018 collection. This tale explores the underpinnings of the myth of Apollo and his takeover of the oracle at Delphi. In the oldest stories, Delphi belongs not to Apollo but to oracular and dreaming women who spoke to the Python in the Earth— the child of Ge. Gaia. Earth. Before Apollo, Delphi belonged to Ge, the goddess of Earth, who is, of course far far older than any Olympian gods. This story is told from the point of view of one of the Pythias, Daphne. It is her account of the day Apollo came, of what led up to it, and what still remains. You can read all of Our Lady of the Dark Country here- https://www.ptreyesbooks.com/book/9780999696606 PODCAST ART: Catherine Sieck PODCAST MUSIC: Giannis Linardakis (Cretan lute, traditional) PODCAST SOUND EDITING: Simon Linsteadt ABOUT THE PODCAST: Welcome to Kalliope's Sanctum, a biweekly story podcast hosted by writer Sylvia V. Linsteadt. This podcast is dedicated to Kalliope, primordial and first Muse of epic poetry and ecstatic song in ancient Greece. This podcast is a place of sanctuary for her oldest stories. It is a return to the wild garden, to the spring, to the ground of being & the source of inspiration in the Earth. Here, we honor Kalliope as Muse of Earth. Here, you will find some of the stories beneath the stories of Old Europe: short fictional/poetic pieces written and read by Sylvia that explore elements of indigenous Old European mythology, with a focus on pre-Hellenic (pre-Patriarchal) Greece. Come sit with us in the honeyed light, among the ripe pomegranates, in Kalliope's sanctuary, where the stories that arise directly from the ground of being and lifeforce can still be safely told and celebrated. Come lean against the sun-warmed stones, with the fragrance of propolis & myrrh in the air, and the trees heavy with autumn quince. This is the garden before the fall, a sanctuary for all hearts in this time. Join us, and be revived. ABOUT SYLVIA V. LINSTEADT: Sylvia V. Linsteadt is a novelist, poet, scholar of ancient history, myth and ecology, and artist. She divides her time between California & Crete, where she is currently working on a novel set in Minoan times. Her published fiction includes the middle grade children’s duology The Stargold Chronicles— The Wild Folk (Usborne, June 2018) and The Wild Folk Rising (Usborne, May 2019)— Our Lady of the Dark Country, a collection of short stories (January 2018) and Tatterdemalion (Unbound, Spring 2017); her works of nonfiction include The Wonderments of the East Bay (Heyday 2014), and Lost Worlds of the San Francisco Bay Area (Heyday, Spring 2017). Chivalry! Honor! Friendship! In this postmodern era, the once-sacred idea of what constitutes a friend has been watered down for most by the simple click of an ADD or REMOVE button. Join us with special guests Dylan John Callahan and Casey Pemberton as we explore the ancient Greek tale of Pythagorean mystics Damon and Pythias. The important lessons from that tale have been the central aim of the Knights of Pythias since its formal creation during the American Civil War. Bro. Powers considers becoming a Knight, Bro. Marshall recites some poetry, and even Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin garner mention as we discover a film originally created to be a celebration of their famous bond.
This time the guys have another great conversation with one of our favorites, Steve Dunkleberger. Secret Societies and Clubs. 3 of 4. The Odd Fellows, the Masons, the Knights of Pythias: all ancient, secret, solemn orders full of the pillars of the community, right? Then what do we make of some of the super weird stuff they did, like pushing each other around on mechanical goats or pretending to be Iroquois sachems? In this episode, we explore the deeper, gendered meanings behind the rituals and rites of American fraternal orders in the 19th century. Find show notes and transcripts here. From Camp Lee to the Great War: The Letters of Lester Scott & Charles Riggle
"I wish now I had enlisted in the Calvary. I would like it better. I like to be with horses. I am tired of seeing mules..." In his twenty-third letter home from Camp Lee, Virginia, to his sister Minnie Riggle, US Army Wagoner (mule team driver) Lester Scott, a World War I soldier from Wheeling, West Virginia, writes that he might not visit after all as he hates the idea of such a long trip for only two days at home. Despite being hospitalized for many days, Les claims he's never really been sick. Yet the little field hospital now houses 75 victims of the mumps. He's seen in the paper that the rest of the West Virginia boys are being sent to Camp Meade, and he'd rather be there than Camp Lee. Les wishes he'd joined the Knights of Pythias, a popular fraternal organization. He also wishes he'd joined the cavalry. He prefers the company of horses to that of mules. He reckons his horse, Bill, is as good as any he sees the officers riding. Les attempts to instruct Minnie in the importance of saluting superiors (and never striking an officer no matter how insulting they might be). He warns Minnie not to put any of his letters in the newspaper, at least until he's gone overseas. He closes by telling Minnie to "Watch for good news from me..." Elsewhere on the same day, the transport steamship SS Tuscania, with 2397 US troops on board, was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Ireland by a German submarine. The Tuscania was part of a British convoy of vessels headed for France. The ship sank quickly, and 210 of the US troops were lost. On the whole, despite this attack, the convoy system employed as a defensive measure against German U-Boat attacks, was highly successful. Lester Scott was drafted in 1917 and trained at Camp Lee, where so many Wheeling soldiers were trained. And, like so many of his Ohio Valley comrades, he served in the 314th Field Artillery Supply Company, Battery “A,” 80th (Blue Ridge) Division in France. This is his twenty-third letter from Camp Lee, dated 100 years ago today, February 5, 1918. Digital scans and a transcript of Lester Scott's February 5, 1918 letter can be viewed at: http://www.archivingwheeling.org/blog/from-camp-lee-to-the-great-war-february-5-1918-podcast Credits: "From Camp Lee to the Great War: The letters of Lester Scott and Charles Riggle" is brought to you by http://archivingwheeling.org in partnership with the Ohio County Public Library (http://www.ohiocountylibrary.org) and the WALS Foundation (http://walswheeling.com). Hello history lovers and welcome to rememberinghistory.com where we are remembering history and we’re making it. Habari gani, I’m Robin the host and in-house historian at rememberinghistory.com and I’m so glad that you’ve come back for this great and groundbreaking show. We’ve been doing something a bit different from our usual podcast show when we talk about different issues affecting the African American community, and discuss the great contributions of African Americans to their communities, the country and world. Today we are celebrating the last and final day of Kwanzaa. Wow, what an experience but it’s coming to an end. And we will focus on an issue that is deeply rooted in African and African American culture: faith (or as we say in Swahili: Imani). I’ll begin—as usual--by bidding you the traditional greeting of Kwanzaa in the Swahili language: Habari gani! If you’re just joining us, you’re very glad to have you with us and I would strongly urge you to listen to the 7 previous podcasts that introduce Kwanzaa and explain each of the days of Kwanzaa. We learned yesterday that Kuumba or creativity is linked to finding and living your purpose (called Nia). They are both founded on knowing your historical and cultural identity. Your creativity is YOUR unique way of making the world into a better place; a place that is more beautiful, more beneficial and more productive than when you were born. If you have any questions, please contact us at rememberinghistory.com website or the Wiki History Podcast page on Facebook. Stay with us today—everyone is welcome around the Kwanzaa mat (the mkeka)—but please take time to listen to the previous shows. Let’s prepare ourselves to begin to Kwanzaa celebration for the seventh and final day. Take a deep cleansing breath before the celebration begins or find another way to quiet and focus your thoughts and energy. Perhaps you want to stand and do a few stretching movements. Just take a moment to get centered and ready to begin the celebration. Remember Kwanzaa IS a celebration but please also show respect for this solemn ritual. Day 7: Imani (faith) Habari gani! Your response: Imani! One more time: Habari gani! Imani! Now please give me the Swahili greeting. (pause) Imani! The 7th day of Kwanzaa falls on January 1st. That’s right on New Year’s Day. The last day of Kwanzaa...the first day of the New Year...has been a time of serious appraisal for African people. Also known as the "Day of Meditation" or "Day of Assessment," it is a period of self-reflection related to things done and things yet to be done. Following in this tradition, it is a time to ask yourself AGAIN the following three questions that we started with on Day 1: "Who am I?" - "Am I really who I say I am" - "Am I all I ought to be?" In addition, this is also a day when many Kwanzaa participants choose to pay particular homage to the ancestors...those of the community as well as those of the family. This seventh day of Kwanzaa is Imani! Again, it means faith. What does faith mean in the context of Kwanzaa? Dr. Karenga thought of Imani as believing in ourselves, our people, our parents and teachers, our leaders and the righteousnessness and victory of our struggle. It also stresses the importance of our vision for a better community and for a better world. In the context of African spirituality, faith begins with a belief in the Creator (God) and in the positivity of the creation. Recognizing that all African spiritual traditions believe that we are formed in the image of the Creator, we are capable of self-mastery and development in the context of positive support, the ability to self-correct, care for and be responsible for each other. This allows us to also believe in our ability to create a just and good society. Faith in ourselves is essential. We must also believe in the value and validity of our struggle for liberation, equality and justice and for a higher level of living. Many people link this to the belief in our capacity to carry out our role in history with dignity. This role is to start a new path and history for other oppressed people and establish a new paradigm for humanity. This faith gives us the strength to invent, innovate and reach inside ourselves to find our true selves. We must not imitate others, particularly people who do not have our best interests at heart. We have the strength to struggle and ultimately prevail. In the final analysis, we must have faith in ourselves and the people who support us. With love and understanding, we can step back onto the stage of human history as a free, proud and productive people. Faith in our Creator (for many African Americans, this would be Jesus Christ) is well-established in the African American community. From the Negro spirituals, AME church, the Church of God in Christ and numerous other churches, faith is our source of strength and our ability to endure and overcome any hardship. And most of our popular leaders have usually emerged from the church. However, it is also been a source of “enslavement” by limiting our options and requiring that we endure and suffer through what should never be endured or suffered. Still, faith in our Creator will undoubtedly remain strong in the African American community as it is rooted in African spiritual traditions. In modern times, many African Americans are linking their spiritual faith with their cultural heritage. The celebration of Kwanzaa has been the result. And this has enhanced our historical and cultural identity as well as our political expertise and strength. Dr. Martin Luther King, Malcolm X (later el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz), Minister Louis Farrakhan, Reverend Al Sharpton, Reverend Jesse Jackson are modern leaders rooted in faith-based activism. Other leaders who came before them were Bishop Richard Allen who was born into slavery, later purchased his freedom and founded the AME church. Then there was Bishop William J. Seymour who founded the modern Pentacostal church and preached a radical Christianity. I can never forget James Cone who dedicated his life to confronting racism in the United States through his experiences in ministry, education, and authorship. He published the landmark book, A Black Theology of Liberation. Finally, Alexander Crummell was an American scholar, an Episcopalian minister, and founder of the American Negro Academy, which was the first major learned society for African Americans. Alexander Crummel was also an early advocate of African-American self-help and self achievement. There have been many others. And they walked the line between spirituality and progressive politics. Let’s end here but I want to mention—again—the landmark book by James Cone called Black Theology of Liberation. This is a great book for anyone who thinks that they must choose between spirituality and racial progress. He also wrote God of the Oppressed and Black Theology & Black Power. All were perspective changing books for anyone stuck in the belief that it’s all about the struggle or that we as a people must wait for our “pie in the sky.” Now let’s prepare to light the Kwanzaa candles: First, the Black candle (in the middle) is lit. Red candle to the far left is lit Green candle to the far right is lit Then another red candle farthest to the left is lit. Then another green candle farthest to the right is lit. Then final red candle is lit. Last of all will be the green candle. Take a moment to enjoy the beautifully illuminated candleholder (the kinara). Let’s enjoy the beauty of all seven candles on the kinara. Now let’s read a story about the concept of Imani, the concept of faith. This final story will be read by my husband, Jonas. Damon and Pythias (While not an African Folktale, has always been one of my favorite stories and it demonstrates the principle very well.) There was once a king who was thought of as a tyrant. His people hated him. He really wasn't such a bad person, but he had very bad advisors and they did cruel things in his name. They made him believe that he couldn't trust the people. So since he never listened to the people, he never found out what his advisors were doing. Whether he was a bad person or not, he was a bad king. In the town near the king's castle, there was a group of rebels. They decided that the only way to change things was to get rid of this king. They though that if they killed the king, his death would be a warning to the next king. So they held a meeting to see who would volunteer to assassinate the king. Among these rebels was a young man named Pythias. He said that he would volunteer, but that he had to wait for two days, just until his sister was married. Their father was dead and he was the only one who could perform the ceremony so that she could be properly married. They told him that they couldn't wait for two days, because the king was going to be out of the castle that following day on a hunting trip and it would be the only chance to get to him. So finally, Pythias agreed to do it. He was hiding in the forest the next morning with bow and arrow ready, but someone saw him and warned the king before he got a chance to shoot. Pythias was captured and brought before the king. The king's advisor suggested that they bring Pythias to the town center and execute him in front of everybody as an example of what would happen to rebels. Pythias did not regret what he had done. And he accepted his fate, but he pleaded with the king to give him one day to take care of his family business and see his sister properly married. The king laughed and said, "I will let you go if someone else is willing to take your place and die in your place if you fail to return." Now Pythias had a best friend named Damon. Even though Damon was not a rebel, he was a true friend to Pythias. There was nothing they wouldn't do for each other. So Pythias called out to the crowd and asked for someone to find Damon. When Damon was brought there, the king asked if he was willing to take Pythias' place on the gallows until he returned. Much to the amazement of the king, Damon agreed. The king couldn't believe his ears. But since he had made a promise, he had to keep his word. Pythias was released and Damon was chained in his place. Pythias rode as fast as he could, gathered his family together and performed the wedding ceremony. He took care of all his business and was heading back to the town center, when his horse fell and broke its leg. Pythias still had miles to go and he was on foot. Meanwhile, the king, who never believed that Pythias would come back, was telling Damon what a fool he was. "I have never seen anyone so foolish in all my life!" the king said, "He won't come back." "You have never seen true friendship." Damon answered. The king was sure that no man would voluntarily come back to his own execution. But Damon was equally sure that his friend would not leave him to die. Pythias had until midday to return. If he was not back by then, Damon would be killed. Pythias was running until he could hardly breathe, but he didn't slow down. Finally, he saw a man riding by and begged him for a ride. "Please!" he pleaded, "I must return to the town center or my best friend will be executed in my place." Pythias quickly told the man his story and the answered, "It is quite a story you tell. I would never forgive myself if I didn't see it through to the end." Pythias jumped onto the back of the man's horse and they raced to the town center just as the rope was being put around Damon's neck. "Wait!" shouted Pythias, "I am here!" The king was shocked! "I told you he would return." said Damon proudly. "In all my life I have never seen such friendship," said the king, "And now that I have seen it, I could never destroy it. I will let Pythias go free on the condition that you accept me as a friend as well." Damon and Pythias and the king became the best of friends. And with true friends at his side, the king began to see what bad advice he had been taking all those years. He sent away his former advisors and with the advice of Damon and Pythias, he became a just and fair king. If you like, you can discuss this story and what it meant to you. No pressure or demands. This is a time of sharing for those who wish to share. And a time of listening for those who prefer to listen. Now let’s fill and pass the unity cup (kikomba cha umoja). Everyone take a sip. Since this is the final day of Kwanzaa, so we will change from our previous days. At this time, we will stand and hold hands and say: Harambee! Seven times-- one time for each day of the Kwanzaa ceremony. Harambee means “let’s pull together!” in Swahili. Ready? Harambee! Harambee! Harambee! Harambee! Harambee! Harambee! Harambee! Now let’s blow out all the candles. This concludes the celebration of Kwanzaa. Just a final note, Kwanzaa (or the principles of Kwanzaa) can be celebrated throughout the year, not only in December. Although it is connected with the harvest, it can be recognized every day. That’s actually a good idea; you can focus on one principle each day and how you can incorporate it into your life and pass it on to other people in your life. Let’s just repeat them now: Umoja (unity) Kujichagulia (self determination) Ujima (collective work and responsibility) Ujamaa (cooperative economics) Nia (purpose) Kuumba (creativity) Imani (faith) Congratulations on completing Kwanzaa. And a special thanks to Eshu for his fantastic Kwanzaa stories that you can find at www.folktales.net. And a special thanks to my dear husband Jonas and amazing son for reading some of the Kwanzaa stories on this podcast show. Let’s come to a close now. Thanks so much for joining us at rememberinghistory.com where we are remembering history AND we’re making it. Every day. Bye for now. Harambee!!
Part 2 of my thoughts on Louisa May Alcott's "Little Men," which includes my ideas on the central chapter of the novel "Damon and Pythias".
The boys had research projects to do this week! Join us as we talk about fraternal organizations outside of Masonry. What are the Knights of Pythias? What's the story behind those marble tree stumps in cemeteries? How badly can we butcher names? What was Albert Pike up to before he was a Mason? Brothers Rhit Moore, Grant Gates, and Gabriel Jagush take a look outside of the Masonic family. Thank you for listening. Greetings! We're finally back on schedule with our first podcast since May when we were in Reno, about to set out on our summer tour. And now here we are, 3000 miles, dozens of performances and a new rear axle later. We come to you from Philadelphia, the birthplace of the U.S. And the "City of Brotherly Love" Which seems like an appropriate place to present a story about friendship. “Damon and Pythias” is a Greek legend about two friends who were even closer buddies than Damon and Affleck. It was reported by many ancient authorities as being a true incident that occurred sometime in the 4th Century BCE in Syracuse, during the reign of the tyrant Dionysius the Elder. Regardless of how much truth there may be to the story, it has come to symbolize the ultimate friendship, to such an extent that Shakespeare alluded to it as such in Hamlet. We offer this tale on the 18th anniversary of our departure from San Francisco and embarking on our extended tour of duty across the U.S. And while our trek hasn't been as ill-fated as that of Pythias, it has had its adventures and misadventures. Here's to the next 18! Happy Listening, Dennis (Narrator, Damon, Herald, Servant) and Kimberly (Pythias, King) Catch a live show
